In case you're curious how Adonal, MP2, and Otis are doing...
Hey, GSoM community. It's Ben from Third Quarter Collapse, SB Nation's Orlando Magic site. Given that our two teams meet for the second and final time this season tonight, I thought you might want to know how Adonal Foyle, Mickael Pietrus, and Otis Smith are doing in their stints in Orlando.
Because he's more popular in the Bay, I'll start with Adonal. The big fella was one of four Magic players to appear in all 82 regular-season games for Orlando in 07/08. The Magic really needed him to play well because he was their only backup center with NBA experience. Marcin Gortat (with whom you're now familiar, I'm sure) was a rookie, and Tony Battie was out for the year with a shoulder injury. As you can probably expect, Foyle played hard every night, but not necessarily well. He was an offensive liability, but his defense was superb.
However, Adonal dropped from the rotation in last year's playoffs, when it became apparent he couldn't keep up with the Raptors' mobile bigs (Bosh, Bargnani, and Humphries). Gortat took over, played well, and relegated Adonal to the end of the bench. Foyle was unhappy about his lack of playoff playing time, and tested free-agency this summer. When he didn't get any nibbles, he re-signed with the Magic for one year. I would not be surprised if he retired when the season ends in order to focus on his nonprofit work.
This season, it's been a much different story. Adonal has only appeared in 4 games, and in only one of those games did he play more than 4 minutes. Against the Houston Rockets, when Dwight Howard got into foul trouble, Stan Van Gundy called on Adonal to defend Yao Ming. He did wonderfully, contributing 7 rebounds and 3 blocks (not to mention 4 points) in only 12 minutes. That was his first action of the season, by the way. He came right in, having not played meaningful minutes in 5 months, and guarded the NBA's tallest player better than just about anyone else. I'm sure that information does not surprise you in the slightest.
Mickael Pietrus, who signed a contract worth the full mid-level exception with the Magic, is now their starting shooting guard. He played exceptionally well in the early going, when Rashard Lewis, Hedo Turkoglu, and Jameer Nelson were still shooting in the mid-30s from the field. Peaches commits his fair share of turnovers--stepping out of bounds, charging right into people who had planted themselves 5 seconds before he arrived, throwing passes into the 6th row, blowing dunks--and is still somewhat foul-prone, but he's still an upgrade over Maurice Evans, who started for Orlando much of last year. His age is a definite plus.
After missing several games due to injury--surprise, surprise, right?--Pietrus made his return last night against the Lakers. He came off the bench for the first time this season and scored 5 points on 2-of-10 shooting. His shot selection stunk, but he played alright defense on Kobe Bryant, especially considering how long he'd been out. However, his missing time wasn't so bad. It forced the Magic to play their rookie, Courtney Lee, and their third-year enigma, J.J. Redick, at the two-guard more. As a result, the Magic now know that Lee is for real and J.J. probably isn't. Additionally, since Pietrus left the lineup, Stan Van Gundy has gone on the record several as saying Lee is the team's best perimeter defender. The Magic signed Pietrus to be that guy. He just got sonned by a rookie. By no means does that mean he's a poor defender, though.
The third guy who has a connection to the Warriors is the team's GM, Otis Smith. Otis is most (in)famous for drafting no-show Fran Vazquez with the 11th overall pick in 2005, and for rewarding one-time All-Star Rashard Lewis with a max contract worth 6 years and $118 million in 2007. He's, um, not renowned for his savvy. He's redeemed himself by signing Jameer Nelson to an extension and by drafting Lee, but there's still a general sense that he's really lucked into this roster. The GM before him, as you may recall, was John Weisbrod, a former hockey executive with no basketball experience. Nevertheless, he was at the helm when the Magic acquired most of their current rotation: drafting Dwight Howard, trading for Nelson's draft rights, signing Hedo Turkoglu, and trading for Battie. I'm not sure what Smith did in Oakland exactly, but I'm pretty sure he was involved in the Warriors' drafting Adonal and Mickael.
Even with Smith's questionable resume, I gather that you guys might rather have him in charge of the Warriors than Chris Mullin. I think Mully has actually done well, but the stuff I read in Tim Kawakami's blog about Robert Rowell's hostile takeover, and Don Nelson's feuding with Mully, really makes it seem like the Dubs' front office is in disarray. If Smith were there, uh... well, Rowell would probably still be mad with power. So nevermind.
Anyway, that's how your former players/exec are doing in Orlando. Mixed results. See y'all at the game tonight. Later.

Third Quarter Collapse??
LOL! XDDDDDDD
That should be the name for the Warriors blog right now, looking at how bad the team has been playing lately (with the exception of Crawfords 50 point game).
k, time for me to read your post now.

k, done reading your post now.
Thanks for coming through to GSoM, Ben. I appreciate all of that information, since I don’t have League Pass and never get to see the Magic play (unless it’s on national tv or against the Warriors); i’m the type that always cares about former Warriors and likes to see how they’re doing on other teams.
It’s unfortunate that Foyle isn’t working out so well for the Magic, but at least you guys don’t have to worry about a multi-million contract with him like the Warriors did. haha. As a Warrior, many called him “stonehands” since he always had trouble catching passes down low. Sucks to hear that he’s still a offensive liability, but as long as he can defend he’ll be playing his role well. Retirement will probably an option that Adonal will be leaning forward to, like you said. He’s always had a lot of stuff on his hands that weren’t even related to basketball; a busy man, he’ll be happy being off the court and finally having time to work on his democracy projects and whatnot.
Peaches? Haha. Mickael Pietrus was always into calling himself “Air France” or “The Michael Jordan of France”.
From reading your post, it looks like Mickael is still the same player. Always making dumb mistakes with the unforced turnovers and clumsy offensive moves. He’s been in the league for a while and he’s still making the same “rookie” mistakes. I thought the 05-06 would be his breakout year, I used to argue with Bulls fans about how Pietrus will someday be better than Luol Deng; I can’t believe I actually had myself believing that would be true. He still has potential to be a great defensive player, though. I remember being excited when I heard rumors of him going to the Spurs during the free agency; Poppovich could have helped him become the next Bruce Bowen. Pietrus had a game in 04-05 where he almost completely shut Kobe down on defense, he had me really excited with his potential.
One thing I truly miss about him is his personality. I still don’t think Ronny Turiaf can replace Pietrus when it comes to a French guy being funny. I still remember Mickael jumping into the Oracle crowd after the Warriors eliminated the Dallas Mavericks in the Playoffs. Charles Barkley was like, “Ok, now THAT’S doing too much! Warriors need not to get too excited”.
LOL @ Charles, he must not know Mickael Pietrus.
But yeah, thanks for that info again. Good luck in the game tomorrow/today (still only 10pm here in the Bay, 1am in the East coast).

Pietrus does have a lot of personality
Some great media-day photos, like this one. And in a game against Dallas, he shouted SHWOOOOOOOOP! every time he shot a three-pointer in the second half.
Bonkers.

Two questions
Where does the name Third Quarter Collapse come from? And has Pietrus set an out of bounds screen this season yet?
by IQofaWarrior on Dec 21, 2008 10:49 PM PST reply actions 0 recs
My parents went to a Magic game a month or two before I started the blog (on blogger, mind you) and they blew a huge lead to the Bucks. They still won the game, but afterward my mom said, “It was just another third quarter collapse by the Magic.” The phrase stuck with me, so when the Magic blew a huge third-quarter lead to the Kings later that season and I couldn’t NOT talk about it, I at least had a name.
I have not seen Mickael set a screen out of bounds this season. Wouldn’t be surprised if it happened. Dude’s a nut.

Its comforting
to know that Mickael still has all the stupid negatives that prevent him from being the player he could and should be, especially stepping out of bounds. ESPN highlights fail to mention those things

Eh, we take the bad with the good
I mentioned the dumb stuff he does because, I mean, it’s kinda funny before you realize it’s hurting the team. But he’s doing things well. Like the defense. Like that he cuts to the basket (although I wish he’d think about, you know, changing direction when a defender plants himself in front of him). Like that he plays hard. Like that he’s making 35% of his threes.
Overall he’s a positive addition. But you’re right, there’s a lot of unfulfilled potential there. Question: when they signed Pietrus, did the Magic pay for a basketball player, or for a great athlete?

If I'm correct...
They drafted him for his athleticism. I remember Jim Barnett talking about Peaches (funny nick name by the way) after the Warriors drafted him, and the profile on him was that he wasn’t a fundamentally sound player (i.e. not such a smart player), but that he was a terrific athlete that the Warriors wanted to back up Jason Richardson. Obviously, from what Warrior and Orlando fans have seen thus far, Jim Barnett was spot on in his assessment. Well… not spot on, but close. When Barnett said “not a fundamentally sound player”, I believe he should have said something like, “he’s not such a smart player, and will make some plays that make you want to pull your hair out”. A few have been mentioned already: 1) stepping out of bounds (especially in the corner whenever he pump fakes and then tries to take it to the rim), 2) setting screens out of bounds (this one had me laughin’), and yes, 3) charging right into defenders who had been set defensively.
My question is, does Peaches still do #3 while penetrating to his left? This always drove me crazy…
Amazing post, man. Thanks for the perspectives.

Oh dear...
Not Warrior related, but I sure wish JJ would play well and find himself some PT.

He's at the end of the bench now
Firmly, I should add. Bogans, Pietrus, and Lee are in front of him. It’s weird. He started when both Bogans and Pietrus were hurt, but once Bogans came back he started getting either DNP-CDs or spot minutes at the end of quarters. On a yo-yo, he is.
Trade bait at this point.

I'd pick him up...
If we’re gonna chuck up endless 3s, we might as well have someone who can make them.
Then again I’m extremely biased

Right on man
I’m just a casual reader/commenter but I really think it’s cool when bloggers from other sites come over and give another perspective. Not only is it fun and informative but I think it helps spread our communal and general love for the game. In any case, thanks!

Glad you enjoyed it.

I will always be your fan JRich. Good Luck

Blocks
I remember one game last season where early in the 1st qtr he ran to the basket to make a huge jumping block to swat the ball out of a driver’s hand. Oracle went crazy and everyone was standing up – for a block.
He probably stepped out of bounds the next play :) Still like buike over him.

He hasn't quite gotten the fans in Orlando behind him yet, I don't think
Although if he continues to fly in for alley-oops, I’m sure it’ll change. We’re still kinda feeling him out, in a way.

![Orlando Magic Officially Re-Sign Adonal Foyle [Third Quarter Collapse]
Now the Warriors can finally complete that C.J. Watson sign-and-trade with the Magic! Don't forget the Warriors have missed the playoffs every year since they bought out Adonal's contract. Coincidence? I think not.](http://cdn3.sbnation.com/fan_shot_images/69316/default_small.jpg)
