The Nelson-Rowell 3 year plan. And they're happy with it.
Mullin has been pushed aside and we're well into the Nelson-Rowell regime.
From my standpoint, Nelson-Rowell has a well defined 3 to 5 year plan for the Warriors.
1) This team is not going anywhere this year. The team will start being good next year and continue to improve and push for deeper playoff runs two years from now. They're happy with the team we have. The players just have to grow into their roles.
The plan since Baron left has always been to assemble a bunch of youngsters and have them stay together for 3 to 5 years to gel. That is why the team is so rookie heavy this year.
They are looking at 2010-2011 with AB and Monte being 6 year vets. Wright and Belli being 4 year vets. Randolf in a supporting role at 22, Kurz and Morrow at 25. Jackson, Maggette, Crawford, Turiaf, Azu. Every one being in the system for 2 to 4 years at this point.
And in 2012 possibly going much further in the playoffs.
This is the base plan. Things may change, but otherwise, they are happy with this plan.
They're not counting on tanking and getting Blake Griffith. They are happy with the plan.
2) Develop the youngsters. You might disagree with how Nelson's giving playing time, but seeing how Bellinelli has developed, you can't discount Nelson's coaching. He also brought Monte and AB along quite nicely.
Nelson is trying to develop the youngsters, just in his own way.
3) Nelson will move into the GM position sooner or later. His first step is giving defensive responsibility to Keith Smart. It might be after his contract is up, but Nelson will take the title when he's offered. He is already the defacto GM.
He knows Mullin won't work out eventually because why pay someone when that someone has no role in the organisation?
4) Trades. Nellie will not trade anyone at a large discounted price. Look at the Dunmurphy and Harrington trades. We have gotten value even though we were in a tough spot.
Nelson will not trade Randolf this year because he does not know what Randolf will become. Before the draft, Nelson assured other teams Randolf will not slip past us and had consistently said Randolf is a top 5 pick. The only thing that can get in the way is a personality conflct blow up that forces a trade. Let's hope both Nelson and Randolf are mature enough to benefit from each other.
Nelson did not lavish nearly as much praise on Wright during Wright's draft. If he believes he's seen enough of Wright and knows his true potential, he might trade Wright, but that time is not now. Nelson is justifiably not happy with Wright's rebounding, but notice how that is the only thing he gripes about. Wright will be given the chance to grow.
Ofcourse no one is untouchable, and I do believe Nelson wants to move Magette, but it will take a lot to get Wright and much more for Randolf.
So.... No Nelson is not trying to get fired. And Randolf and Wright are not going anywhere unless we have a jaw dropper offer... and Yes, Nelson is going to develop the youngsters... and Yes both Rowell and Nelson is on the same page on everything.

Maggette
is not part of the plan. Monta Crawford Jackson Maggette is redundant.
And!!!
I have been a Dubs fan since I can remember (since I was 5 yrs old). I always supported them throughout all the years no matter what. BUT I AM F****g tired of being always in the rebuilding process. How many F*****g years are we going to continue this???
We had a chance to take it to the next level 2 years ago or at least stay competitive. So now they have a plan?!!!!! ok let’s be patient 3-5yrs more—I will continue to be a Dubs fan but for now &^$U^#$&^%# Nelson and Rowell and specially the bitch of an owner we have.
proof plz?
Mullin has been pushed aside and we’re well into the Nelson-Rowell regime.
"They can trade me," Bonds said. "I don't think they will, though. It's not like I want to be traded, man. I'm a Giant. I'm stuck here till the end."
crawford has 2 years i believe, so his role is for time being to help out but hes not a long term player….. jack management thinks is the captain leader and good to help mentor younger guys.
Mags man I just dont know. The idea in the offseason was monta, jack, mags, harrington, biedrins as our lineup, with bellinelli, buke wright, turiaf as top bench guys… But harrington had to throw a fit and crawford was best we could get for him.
The idea was put a competitive team that could challenge playoffs this year, and as monta, AD and young guys develop, in a couple years they could challenge to upper teir of west. Mags, jacks, AL were suppose to be the older leaders to help field a competitve squad as no fan wants a 20-60 season. But in the long term vision they arent there at the money they r getting.
beReal,
you are definitely right about the constant rebuild being tiring but the truth is, we arent NYC or LAL who can just sign ANY free agent we want. If we want to win we mostly have to build internally, think of it at the portland approach….only they r a few years ahead of us.
The problem is harrington forced us into getting crawford giving us massive surplus for swing guards…Now management has to either trade him or more likely maggette.
ya horrible to get a guy who can only get you 50 on any given night. We should waive him.

chill out
crawford isnt horrible… neither is maggette. NEither r NECESSARY though especially when monta comes back. Considering the deficiencies at other positions. Also look at his slump prior to the 50 point game. I like crawford hes a solid guy, but harrington at top form is more useful

Sorry - You Cannot Have a 3-5 Year Plan in the NBA
There is too much risk of injury and uncertainty with players. A team should be competitive within 2-3 years or else scrap it. Look at the Lakers, Celtics, Spurs, Rockets, Heat, Pistons – Blazers have done nothing yet – Kings are a better example of a small market putting things together within 2-3 years.
Portland is a bad example, and Sacramento is a good one?
Portland, contending for a division title in year three of their plan. Sacramento, a lot of young talent that isn’t winning in year two. Portland won 41 games in the second year of their rebuilding.
And I’m counting the Brandon Roy draft as the start of the plan… it’s when Pritchard took over drafting from Patterson/Nash.
I know I’m a Portland homer, but it’s weird that you would think we’ve done nothing and the Kings have.

Tired of this
Cohan must be Al Adavis’ brother they bother—Need I say more!!!
Ok
had to get that out. One of the main reasons we keep getting stuck in this crap, is becuase we give star contracts to players that are 2nd or 3rd players. I would prefer the front office say we want to see what we have and are not signing anyone as we do not think there is something we think will make a difference (i.e mags) or extend a contract to Jackson WTF is the office thinking. I was against signing mags and definitely against giving jackson the extension. These players are back role players to the stars they are not stars!!!
We need a good GM and VP of Ops, until then we will continue down this path. I bet if we were to just go young fans would have gone to see them, at least we would know if what we had was worth anything
We are all frustrated, but for my part it is with the front office for making bad deals.
Tired of being in the low tier of nba teams
why is it that our team has to always be losers. we got only 2 years of winning basketball and then they just blow it up. I’m tired of people talking down the Warriors and us not getting as much national exposure as i would like. I think the Warriors are cursed cause as soon as we get something good to look forward something bad is gonna happen. We probably are gonna be bad for the next 10 years and we are probably never gonna win another title again
they didnt blow it up. Baron wanted to go to LA. We offered more per year, thats a fact. But LA gave him 5 years garenteed. BAD IDEA.
the maggette deal was stupid but i get the logic. And Monta Injury was unfortunate…. If monta was healthy i bet we’re hoverying around 500. Also keep in mind we have worst schedule in nba for first couple months. Only milwaukee has had more road games

good points
I’m still not a happy Warriors fan right now, but you brought up some good points about our younger players.
As much as we bitch and moan about the younger players not being developed, I believe Don Nelson has gotten the most out of the potential of Ellis and Biedrins. Those two guys are way better than anyone could have imagined, and alot of the credit should go to Nelson for that.
Same goes for Belinelli. If anyone would have told me that Belinelli would end up being one of our best perimeter defenders and distributors, I would have laughed in their face. Honestly, when he got drafted, I imagined him to be a flashy JJ Reddick or Jason Kapono type and nothing more. Nelson’s tough love on him is beginning to pay off.
Brandan Wright is also turning into a solid pro before our eyes. His “per 36” career stats are beautifully solid: 57% FG, 70% FT, 8.9 RPG, 0.8 SPG, 2.1 BPG, 1.2 TOPG, 15.6 PPG, and maybe most importantly, only 3.6 PFPG as a very young player in this league. With a positive +/- and stellar PER to boot. Not bad.
Maybe Nelson does really know what he’s doing with these young players. I still hate smallball, though.
good points
Nellie should not get much credit for developing Biedrins or Monta. Monta was raw talent right out of highschool, he was going to be good offensively with any coach, and Nellie has made no emphasis on making him a better defender which is the one thing that could make him one of the best all around players in the league. And Biedrins, when asked about his marked improvement, does not mention Nellie. He talks about how playing for his National team helped his offensive game and confidence. The best thing for him is to play with his national team in the off season and keep Nellie away.
As for Belenelli, if it wasn’t for that one break out game, he would still be riding the bench. He could have had this type of production at the beginning of the year, so where is Nellies great coaching there? Why didn’t we see him earlier this year? Wright is very solid, I agree completely. But the stats you showed expose Nellie for poor management. With this sort of PER, why isn’t he playing 20+ min a game? Nellie is too caught up in his own ego.
on the otherhand
Nellie’s system exploits Monta’s “one man fastbreak” better than anybody. he also got to stop shooting 3’s and he forces Monta to not shoot in practice in order to improve his court vision and passing skills.
AB’s time w/ the national team is overrated. when asked early on in the season about AB’s development w/ the team, Nellie said it’s the same moves he showed in practice last season – he just has more confidence in them b/c they worked in games (albeit against subpar competition). and for all his “improvements”, w/ his increased touches his shooting % is down and his turnovers are way up.
Belinelli’s problem early on (as with most young players) is missing assignments and not following the gameplan – thereby confusing his teammates and creating uncertainty and more blown assignments. though he still has the occasional brain fart – it happens far less often. you assume, he could of had this production at the beginning of the year. there’s no actual evidence that he could. and #‘s on a bad squad are always to be taken w/ a grain of salt – and minus our top 3 guys, we’re in the Wizards, OKC, Timberwolves range.
BW’s a good finisher and plays w/in himself, but his production primarily comes off of other players creating opportunities for him to finish. the better the 1-3 positions, the more chances he’ll get to do what he does best, finish plays. if he’s stuck playing w/ CJ, KAz, Morrow, he’ll virtually disappear from the game.
i don’t like Nellie as our coach b/c of small ball and to a lesser extent the inconsistent rotations (partially forgivable b/c of injuries and trying to figure out who mixes and matches well) – all this other development bs is just pure speculation. maybe nellis is “too caught up in his own ego” – but that’s pure speculation – it’s what the media tells you to think.
ppl used to hate on Jack b/c the media told you he’s a thug with a # of incidents… now ppl see him as a team leader and a leader in the community b/c that’s what the media is focusing on. adulterers like Jerry Rice & MJ get a free pass b/c they are well liked by the media and so are reported in a good light. guys like Nellie who are hated by the media aren’t.

Every business has a base plan. I think this is what will dictate GSW actions.
And I think it’s a better predictor than most things on the blogsphere right now.
Nelson and Player Development
Thanks for pointing out that Nellie is not exactly an amateur at player development. Reading posts here, I don’t recognize the Nellie that developed Steve Nash, Dirk Nowitzki, and, sitting on the bench beside him, Sidney Moncrief. AR has tremendous potential but he’s a long way from being finished and letting him run wild in a game is not the way to get him finished. My guess is if Nellie’s talking to his agent it is about getting him to work in practice, not to work out a trade. A nice post, JSML.

"letting him run wild"
That’s a great point. Good player development does not mean just blindly giving them minutes.
A good example of this is over in Oklahoma City with Kevin Durant. Sure, his “per game” stats are impressive, but he’s learning how to play bad basketball. He’s learning how to be an absolute ball hog on offense and a true matador on defense. The Thunder score a weighted, pace-adjusted 98 points per game both with him ON and OFF the court. And here’s the real kicker: They give up 112 PPG with him ON the court, and only 100 PPG with him OFF the court. This gives him an overall +/- of -12.28. Yes, that’s right, the crappy Oklahoma City Thunder actually play better without Kevin Durant. What a mismanagement of an extreme talent…
Nelson will give Randolph more playing time when the time is right.

I can deal with “Montay” since it conveys it phonetically, but “monte” makes me think “Mike Montgomery” and thinking “Mike Montgomery” makes me think "it’s probably too early in the day to start serious drinking, but if I’m thinking about the Mike Montgomery era, what else can I do but drink?
Haha, Montie
That’s exactly what I think when I see that too. Glad I’m not the only one who’s haunted.

Glad I’m not the only one who’s haunted.
Actually I think we shouda kept Monte and let him get some more NBA experience before deciding what to do. Montgomery’s winning percentage is a lot higher than Nelsons so he’s probably a better long term coach. He works with young players all the time so he would be valuable in that respect and I think he’s a nicer person overall.

Old dog, new tricks...
He never learned the NBA game. I can’t get over how many times he made a “college” coaching move in a pro game. I remember him telling Dunleavy to intentional foul in a one possession game with 30 something seconds on the clock. From what I understand he totally lost that team.
Also, NBA win %
Nelson – .573
Montie – .416

Also, NBA win % Nelson – .573 Montie – .416
When we replaced Monte with Nellie I looked up Monte’s career % and it was something like .65 and nelson was .55 . Monte won a ton of games at Stanford.

Sure if you include college...
Do you think the wins he racked up coaching Montana are as meaningful to an NBA franchise as the ones Nellie got coaching the Bucks? You can’t really compare winning % of college coaches with NBA coaches.
I could probably get a higher win % than Nellie too if I get hired to coach the right highschool team. Would that make me a better coach than him?

WHAT???
I am not sure where you got this three year plan from, but as long as Nellie is the coach and Rowell is the owner, with no Mullin in site, this team may not touch the playoffs. Nellie has shown that he is ready to retire, he has checked out, and we need a coach who is ready for a re-building effort. Even with Monta back we still have no PG, and very little post presence, and lets face it, Monta is far from a good defender. And they don’t have to “plan on tanking” they are doing it anyway! And I would be shocked if Nellie drafted a solid post player who could remedy our interior defense, offense and rebounding problems. And I strongly disagree with how Nellie has developed young players, if anything he stunts their growth. I firmly believe that Belenelli could have been this productive at the beginning of the season, and Randolph is ready to contribute, and Wright is supposed to be a part of the future yet he struggles to get consistent playing time. Biedrins said that playing for his national team helped him immensely (notice the absence of Nellie) and he and Monta have been in the league for what, 4 years now? They developed themselves, Nellie should get little credit. It is also undeniable to place validity on what Dunleavy and Harrington have said about Nellie. Look at how well they have done since leaving the Warriors, even Murphy is averaging a double double.
I am curious how you can say nellie has given Wright a chance to grow….how? Playing sparingly or not at all? Young guys need time to adapt to the game, that does not come at 2 minutes at a time for a total of 12 minutes a game (if he is lucky to get in at all). There are some basic and historical flaws in your post, Nellie will not, and has rarely done well developing young players, so this will not change, he will continue to stunt the growth of our team. Nellie has shown the Warriors that he cannot develop this team, and he is a GM role would be a disaster, an utter disaster. Nellie has no future with the Warriors, this team is not put together well, and unfortunately I think this season, and the foreseeable future unless something changes is pretty bleak
Dubs are 8-21
I guess now would be a good time to realize they should forget about the Playoffs right? Ha ha ha ha! Nellie, 08-09 is over. Play SJax and Mags for 20 minutes a night while Wright, Randolph, Belinelli, CJ, Nelson and Buike can develop their game. Monta and Crawford don’t need much to work on per se`.
Nellie, your teams isn’t going anywhere. Play the youngins as much as you can!
Nellie eyeing 7 year contract
Part jest, but Nellie has public said this year he wants to be the mentor for GSW long term. Sort of like what he envisioned for himself in Dallas.
He only has to convince one person, Rowell, and Rowell is squarely in his corner. He won’t leave the team. He will just move upstairs. He is not going to quit, when he can possible get a few more years beyond the 3 he has.
mbudttha, on my Wright comment. The context is that Nelson is not going to trade him. But to your point, one either believes or do not believe Nelson 2.0 can develop yougnsters. I believe he can.
fair enough
Just wondering where you got that opinion, based on what he has done with the young players since arriving in GS?
he could trade wright
hes been starting even though hes ben playing crappy (ok he had a good 3rd quarter) perhaps trying to showcase him.
anyway i like how nellie’s been delegating responsibility. He’s not dumb knows his deficiencies….. hopefully smart and moncreif can get into younger guys heads

See today's article on Hoopsworld. Same as what I am saying.
Read story:
http://www.hoopsworld.com/Story.asp?story_id=11041
“Having the young players around is ultimately what the Warriors have going for them, as most of the team is locked up with long-term deals for Ellis, Andris Biedrins, Crawford, Maggette, and Jackson. With much of the team poised to stay together for a very long time, Crawford knows that having that kind of continuity can certainly help a team in the long run.”
Since Crawford
and Maggette are career losers who don’t make a team better (and maybe makes them worse) I can’t agree. This front office is totally mismanaged. Jax extension after signing Maggette and drafting AR? What are they thinking?
A smart front office, after they lost baron, would have declared they are going young. good players in the NBA don’t need 4-5 years to develop. Now they are back where they were stuck with mediocre vets who are capping them out. If Wright, AR or Belli pan out they will need to play big minutes in 2-3 years but will be blocked by mediocre vet.
You can never go wrong with young talent and cap space but you sure can giving 50 million to Maggette
