Leadership

Where is the LEADERSHIP on the Warriors team?

"Leadership has been described as the process of social influence in which one person is able to enlist the aid and support of others in the accomplishment of a common goal."

Our team has the the talent...but this is why we miss BD sooooo much.  He brought all the talent together.

If you ever watch BD on the Clippers, you'll see what I mean.  He's on the floor talking (or yelling) to everyone...  We didn't lose a point guard (that position can easily be replaced)...We lost our leader.   Jackson try's to be the leader...but what he's shown us is that you need to complain to the refs about fouls that were not called.  How many times has the other team gone for an easy lay up while Jackson is on the other side complaining to the refs.  Leaders don't say "I don't know how much more of this I can take" (maybe they say it, but usually not publicly)   Hence, since the team views Jackson as the leader...the team has followed his lead...the Warriors have become complainers...  guys complaining about playing time...guys wanting to be traded.  Where is the "common goal"???  (Which should be to WIN ofcourse).  The last couple of years, Jackson took an active role in keeping BD focused, every leader needs a right hand man and Jackson was it, but he was never "the leader"...

Now...BD doesn't have a "Jackson", and Jackson doesn't have a "BD".

At this point, I don't know if it matters what trades take place on our team.  What matters is we have a leader on the floor.  I don't know if Monta will be able to bring it.  Don't get me wrong, Monta is a great player, but he's not very vocal.  Who is going to step up to this huge role?

Anthony Randolph!  If Nellie, can give him the chance, I think Randolph has the drive, the energy, the attitude.  Is he our future leader?

Randolph

isn’t that vocal, he just likes getting hyphy when he makes big dunks. I think Monta can grow into being a vocal leader though.

He hasn't

ever had to be a vocal leader, but once he comes back and has to be the go to guy, then I think he will know that he has to be the leader of the team.

A lot of teams don't have leaders

Thats why they aren’t very good. Usually good teams have leaders…

Who’s the leader in Oklahoma, Minnesota, Sac Town, Memphis, Charlotte, Indiana or Milwaukee? No one, thats why they suck like the Dubs do.

Who's the leader in SA?

Duncan? Parker? Ginobili? I’d say it’s Popovich.

yea but he’s not vocal at all. Duncan is their best player, of course, but I’d say its more Parker than Duncan as team leader….but I’d agree with antihero that its more Pop than any player in SA. Similar situation in Orlando…while Howard is their best player their leader is probably Jameer Nelson or Van Gundy.

Marco can be the leader...

Look what Rambo did in the 4th installment… he was the boat guy that kicked ass!

Was Baron really a leader for us? I’m not saying he wasn’t… I’m just not sure.

Baron talked to everybody while playing because he was the point guard. He didn’t give pep talks to guys during free throws, take guys aside on the bench, anything like that. He led the offense, but that doesn’t prove he was a leader, in the inspiring, motivating, locker room sense.

Baron wasn’t as reckless as Jack in talking to the media… he was cagier about discussing contract extensions, losing streaks, etc. That doesn’t prove he was a leader. I doubt players really care what their teammates say in interviews. Did Baron call team meetings and the like? Possibly, but I can’t remember hearing about them off the top of my head. My sense is that both J-Rich and Jack do more of that stuff than Baron.

Did Baron set an example for the team with his play? Not really. He coasted on defense for long stretches… he took a lot of shots he probably shouldn’t have taken… he settled for isolation a lot, rather than trying to initiate teamwork on offense. I don’t really remember Baron leading by example.

I mainly remember Baron leading by kicking ass. By driving, scoring in the post, passing brilliantly, rebounding excellently for his position and getting boatloads of steals. The way I see it, Baron wasn’t a leader. He was better than leader: he was so good, we didn’t need one.

Jack, if anything, is more of a leader than Baron. He talks to guys more, shows more fire, tries to set more of a tone on defense… he does more boilerplate “leading” than Baron. It doesn’t matter, because we suck, and Jack’s leadership can only change that so much. Kevin Garnett couldn’t pep-talk this into a great team, no matter how much fire he spewed… we just don’t have the horses right now. Look at Jack himself. His own crappiness on offense hurts us more than his speeches could possibly help.

I’m not saying leadership is irrelevant. I’m saying it’s less important than talent. Right now we have the least defensive talent of any team in the league, by a comfortable margin, and our offense isn’t nearly good enough to compensate for it. Monta will help the offense a good bit, and he might even marginally help the defense just by racking up some steals, but he’s not going to fix everything by himself. We miss Baron’s offense, above all, and we miss not having guys named Crawford, Maggette and Belinelli on defense.

We’re being coached poorly, and you could reasonably call that a leadership issue… Nellie should be “leading” this team into somewhat better pick-and-roll defense, better shot selection, more sensible lineups, et cetera. That’s a genuine problem. But the bigger problem is that Baron Davis, Monta Ellis and Al Harrington for Jamal Crawford, Ronny Turiaf and a banged-up Corey Maggette wasn’t a good trade for us.
