2008 Talking Points Hitman of the Year: Robert Rowell, you’re a star!
It always cracks me up when Tim Kawakami clowns the unqualified and unprofessional Warriors President Robert Rowell with the "BUY TICKETS BUY TICKETS BUY TICKETS" line. Simply put, Rowell needs to go. I have no idea how he maneuvered his way into the top position of a half billion dollar corporation with his credentials and "people skills".
I find myself agreeing less and less with Tim on his Warriors analysis this season (Nellie gets way too much disrespect and blame even though he's a hoops mastermind and can fix this mess, Mullin gets the kiddie gloves even though his tenure has been fairly incompetent, and Marco Belinelli is not starting NBA material with that terrible court vision, low hoops IQ, horrendous shot selection, complete reliance on flopping, and overall softness), but how can you not appreciate his entertaining and highly opinionated coverage of the Dubs? His pieces are part of the reason this dreadful Warriors season has been somewhat interesting.

Whatcha...
…got against Belinelli? Rhetorical question, I know, since you laid it out pretty starkly.
I’d disagree primarily that he has low hoops IQ and poor court vision. Since he started getting minutes he’s been more or less the most dynamic playmaker they have on the floor. He’s pulled off some exquisite passes, not just passes into pressure, but whip passes from inside-out on dribble penetration. He’s been making smart decisions about to where and to whom he’s passing the ball, which is something we typically lack.
His shot selection isn’t what I’d consider prototypical or ideal, but he balances it nicely. He did have some bad takes last night, but he also made some very heady plays, the bank shot in front of Garnett near the end in particular. He went 0-3 on a string of three pointers after that, but considering his play up until that point, I couldn’t fault the first two. The first he was riding a high, and I believe in feeding a hot hand. The second he was pretty wide open (although I was at the game, so I don’t have a replay to watch) and I remember thinking it was the smart shot. The third he shouldn’t have taken.
I didn’t get to see it on TV, so I couldn’t see if those offensive fouls he drew were flops. I did see clearly that Allen was beating him pretty ragged, so even if they were exaggerations, I’d rate them as deserved.

I was at the game
If Belinelli as a big minute starter (especially at Point Guard) is the future plan for this squad then we’re all doomed, unless he makes some substantial improvements in his game- starting with staying focused at all times.
While handling the point he was either over-dribbling, making some silly lazy pass, or getting picked (his behind the back dribbles in traffic need to go). His 5 turnovers were bad, real bad and he actually should have been credited for more. His shot selection was atrocious- off balance J’s and a 3pt in the final 2min with 20 seconds left on the shot clock when the Warriors were trying to protect the lead. I don’t know how “hot” you can really call him when he shot 4-11 from 3’s and 41.1% overall.
On defense he was either getting beat off the dribble or lazily swiping for the ball while backtracking on the opponent’s fast break, or flopping. If I were a Celts’ fan I’d be pretty upset at the flops the refs were allowing. Actually as a hoops fan I didn’t like those calls.
Belinelli didn’t seem to know where to go and when to go there. I kept telling Hash- I can’t believe Nellie hasn’t (rightfully) pulled him yet, but then he reminded me that everyone was injured- what can Nellie do?
Give Belinelli credit though. He’s much improved compared to last season. He did hit a few nice 3’s, made some pretty passes, and put pressure on the ball a few times, plus that pretty bank shot on KG you noted.
Don’t be too surprised if he goes back to the bench when Crawford and Maggette come back. Kelenna Azubuike has already proven to be a far superior player to him as well. Belinelli is NOT a good shooter and not even close to being “lights out”. I think his Euro league stats and NBA career thus far demonstrate that pretty clearly, yet the crowd foolishly continues to encourage him to “just shoot it!”
Hopefully, hopefully I’m completely wrong and he’s that budding star we all thought we had for about a second in the summer of 2007.

maybe you don’t like Tim’s analysis because you’re a blind Nellie follower. Who put the team that Nellie took to the playoffs together? Who wanted to keep that team in tact but was turned down by the front office? Mullin. He gets a pass because he knows what he’s doing and has learned from the past mistakes, unlike your boy Nellie. Nellie is making a power play to get Mullin out of office and is working with Cohan. Plus, Tim isn’t the only one blaming Nelson and Rowell, Ric Bucher is getting in on the mess that is the Golden State Warriors. Instead of blindly following the WE BELIEVE mantra, get a grip and smell the roses. The Warriors are 9-22 and are stacked with 7 sg’s! Enjoy the roster that Nellie has envisioned and get used to this losing homie.

Well,He still have a lot to improve
But is he as bad as what you have said?I think he’ll improve himself and earn his minute. He’ll be improving but at least he will stay at the W’s and hope Belli will be our new star.

Perhaps Rowell has intangibles going for him...
such as under the table skills.

Thanks for The Grin
I am going to try to think about Tim K as a situation comedy. I do love the descriptions of him running from here to there to bring us the verbatim transcript of some important press conference or interview. I’ll try because you are having more fun reading him than I am, and are managing to put all his weak suits in perspective. I just have trouble working all that anti-Nelson meanness into the script. A good eipisode, though, would be for Timmie K to have a press conference and answer questions about his report on the Jax-Nellie problems. At the end he could declare he was moving to Illinois to run for governor because it doesn’t matter in that job if you telll the truth or not and someone has suggested to him that it does in the one has. “I meant no harm. I just didn’t know,” he can say.
