Maggette vs. Jackson
This was written in response to a post on how Maggette's play is hurting the team. Let me know what you guys think.
The Warriors know what they were getting in hiring Maggette. He is a scorer, he makes his free throws, he plays within himself. He is not as dynamic of a playmaker as Jackson is. Warriors signed Maggette for those specific skills, and because of the lack of scoring, which he provides, that’s it. To be complaining about Maggette’s inability to involve his teammates and expecting him to be a playmaker sounds a bit ridiculous. He is who he is, he’s a one dimensional player. It’s the same as if the Warriors were to sign a pure 3 point shooter and you are expecting him to help the team rebound or block shots. Not gonna happen. We shouldn’t really blame Maggette for being detrimental to the team’s success, nobody likes having a ballhog on his team, but at least he plays within himself.
On the other hand, Jackson is more than a one dimensional player, however, that also contributes to his weakness. He is a capable scorer, he has the vision of a passer. What is lacking is his ability to put a string of games together where both those skill sets come together. The highs and lows of Jackson’s performance is more dramatic than Maggette’s, and because he is being forced to do too much, I see him hurting the team’s success more this season. Hear me out on this.
Warriors are asking Jackson to do everything, scoring, passing, and defending. So far this season, he’s done scoring, passing, but he doesn’t have the energy to be a lockdown defender anymore. So not bad right? 2 out of 3 he’s getting it done. Not really. When his shots are falling, the rest of the team gets left out, no ball movement. He seems to always be in isolation plays, stab jabbing right and left, backing down defenders, maybe a few zip passes once or twice a game, that’s it. When he doesn’t get a foul called in his favor, he loses focus, doesn’t get back on defense, hurts the team defense. Remember that he is a high volume shooter, only knocking them down at 39% rate this season, which means he takes away shots from his teammates. It all make sense. He shoots a lot, but at a low percentage, less ball movement when he melts the shot clock in one on one plays, then he is forced to make zip passes that 4 out of 10 times end up being a turnover, result is the team loses on most nights.
But you say Jackson leads the team in assists (6.7/game)! But he also leads the team in turnovers (3.9/game). You have to look the assists/turnover ratio. Jackson’s A/T ratio is a dismal 1.71. A quality passer has a A/T ratio of 2.5-3.0+. Chris Paul 3.8, Jose Calderon 5(flat out crazy good), Baron Davis 3.38, Kidd 2.7 this season. Jackson is not even close. So what about the 11 assists he had in the last game and we almost won? Well, he’s injured wrist prevented him from shooting, even though he still tried 11 times (2/11). Which leads to my next point. Jackson had 11 assists(4 turnovers, A/T ratio=2.75), only took 11 shots, and he shut down DWade in the 4th quarter (2/10 shooting), we had the game won. If that wasn’t enough indication of what Jackson needs to do to help this team win, I dont know what is. Less ballhogging, more passing, shut down defender. we know he has the skills to be a multi-dimensional playmaker if he wants to. He is more dynamic than Maggette, he has the skills to lead this team, therefore we should expect more out of Jackson and not Maggette. Jackson needs to realize what he did in the Miami game that made the team so much better(if not for all those 2nd chance points, rebounding, we should've easily won by 10+ pts), don't try to do everything. Let Crawford create, let Maggette drive, let shooters shoot, run that pick and roll with Biedrin until teams can stop that, and let the game come to him.

Understood
I don’t think there’s really anything wrong with the offense, though. The Warriors scored 125 points without their two best players against the Knicks. The points are going to come. C’mon, defense; let’s go.

Still Scoring
The Warriors are averaging 106.3 points per game. They’re still scoring a lot of points.

DEFENSE PLEEEEEASE!
I posted this earlier and I’d like to say it again. The name of the game is DEFENSE! And the Dubs have none. I don’t care how Maggette scores his points. They have to come from somewhere and I would rather Maggette shoot 85% from the free throw line than the rest of the team shooting below 30% from three. What worries me is the Warriors comlete lack of defense. It’s discusting to watch the Warriors on the defensive end. Do these guys take no pride in their game? I just don’t understand how they could allow blow-by after blow-by and not get mad. And after every blow-by by the opposition the rotation is almost non-exsistent. Every player on our team is athletic enough to at least be a decent defender and that’s all I ask. This falls on the sholders of on man only; Don Nelson. I know we will never be the Spurs or Boston on the defensive end, but Jesus Christ, this is just ridiculous. We might not win another game if we defend like we have to start the season. But maybe that’s not the worst thing if that gives us a shot at drafting Blake Griffin outta Okalahoma this coming draft…haha.

Good post. Great analysis. Now that we have so many other players to score, Jackson needs to lessen his load and try not to do as much, but only time will tell if he actually does this. Hopefully when Monta comes back (sooner than later, I hope), we’ll start doing MUCH better. But who knows, we’re Warriors fans, if it’s one thing we know it’s disappointment. Go Dubs!

He's best when he defers on the offensive end
When he trusts the other players to make plays. It’s when he thinks he has to do it all that it becomes a problem.

Get Steals
they need to put more pressure on other teams offense and get steals so they can get on the break. But i do like the way they play defense in a zone. They just need to be more active on D and they will be fine. cause they got the offense of a playoff team even without monta but when monta comes back they will just be able to outscore people, but untill then Some Defense is needed

oops off subject
but anyways it depends what kind of player you want. If you want a role palyer then jackson fits better but if you want a franchise type scorer then maggette. jacckson plays much better when 2nd or even 3rd option while maggettte could be a first option if you need him to

you said it
He plays within himself..by himself on the right block. If he scores 20, he gives up 15. He needs to add another demension to his one dimensional game. You know keeping the chemistry going between his mates. Even if Jackson turns the ball over trying to set up a play, at least the recieving teamate wasnt being shut out. I think Jackson played a good ball game against Miami. You mean to tell me that Magette could not pass it one time to set up a teamate. I dont know about you, but if I had a teamate like that I would have to stitch my lips together.

nice
Nice post, I enjoyed reading that, it was very well written, thank you for that.
I also think you were pretty spot on with the analysis, and like you implied and someone mentioned above, Jackson is much more effective (offensively) when he lets the shots come to him. So now that we are even deeper with scorers, I hope Jackson can be more of a distributer/defender/clutch shooter (when the time is right), instead of full time shooter/distributer.

if this is a "who would you rather have"
then it’s jackson
"They can trade me," Bonds said. "I don't think they will, though. It's not like I want to be traded, man. I'm a Giant. I'm stuck here till the end."

After I heard that the Warriors signed Corey Maggette I was kind of excited and thought that he would bring the extra scoring. Now I realize how stupid the signing really was, Maggette only looks to score, and he completely disrupts the offensive flow. He does not fit in with the Warriors and needs to be dealt asap. Jackson is a much better player, he is a good passer, a good shooter, he plays defense, and he brings emotion and leadership to the Warriors. He is struggling as of late because he is being asked to do a lot of things. I think that once Monta gets back then that will take a huge load off of jackson and he will feel more comfortable. Although jackson is putting up so really nice numbers right now. Maggette is getting solid numbers to, but the way he gets them is not good. I would like to see a future lineup of:
Ellis/Watson/Williams
Crawford/Morrow/Belinelli
Jackson/Azubukie/Randolph
Wright/Hendrix/player from a maggette trade
Biedrins/Turiaf
Since there is a very slim chance that we are going to make the playoffs Nellie should develop some young guys, but idk how much it is going to happen.
