Game #19: Warriors @ Rockets – Merry YaoZa!

Golden State Warriors at Houston Rockets, Dec 5, 2008 5:30 PM PST

Something funny to spread holiday cheer!

Warriors: 5-13
Rockets: 12-7
Tip-Off: 5:30 PM PST
TV: CSN
Radio: KNBR 1050

Ooooo it's Christmas already for YaoButtaMing!! I've circled all 4 games against the Rockets on my calendar to watch my favorite team play my favorite player. I can remember like it was yesterday. It's 2001 and the Warriors were COMPLETELY robbed of the lottery ball dropping and ended up drafting (what sparked most of GSoM's popularity) none other than Mike Dunleavy.

Let's just imagine for a second what life would be like if we actually drafted Yao Ming instead of Dunleavy in 2001 shall we?

1)      We'd have won 4 championships by now.

2)      We'd still have Baron Davis and JRich on the team.

3)      Life would be great.

4)      We would not be in a recession.

5)      Lastly, Jessica Alba and I would have been celebrating our 3 year anniversary.

But alas life is not as perfect. Sure within that time frame we've had our ups and major downs. We've drafted horrible players and gave them horrible contracts but we've also made some sweet runs and did you know we made the playoffs one year? Pretty crazy.

But tonight's about our young squad taking on the Houston Rockets. A team we actually do very well against with our speed and quickness, plus the fact that the Rockets are without TMac for the next three weeks. Without Baron Davis or JRich to hit ridiculous 3 point shots to win the game it's going to be tough but with the emergence of Crawford and Morrow there's a chance? With a 7 game losing streak and not much else to be proud about let's hope we can pull it together and win just one more game before Christmas.

Beans would have blocked this!

Predictions:

- Warriors by 4.
- Yao edges Beans for a more impressive double double.
- Jackson blows up for 27 points.
- Nellie tries Hack-a-Yao only because it sounds funny.
- Morrow pulls a double double.

I have only 3 predictions for this game

1) Warriors lose
2) Yao destroys our defense
3) This open thread ends up being a discussion about why we traded Al Harrington

sounds about right,

if loose, how bout we start a fire Robert Rowell petetion?

This open thread ends up being a discussion about why we traded Al Harrington

Why did we trade Harrington anyway? We started off the season with a near win over the Hornets with Al starting then went downhill from there. Was it an early decision to tank?

Al said he didnt want to be here. just like pietrus. look how long pietrus sat out with his “injury” look how long al sat out with his “injury”

by saintdee on Dec 5, 2008 9:51 AM PST up reply actions

Al said he didnt want to be here

I think that was because Nelson was mis-using him? If Al was getting the time and support he deserved he’d probably been fine. The hornets game showed that we can play a good game with Al in the line up. We played much better than with our small line up or our rookies. I really got high hopes for the season after that first game but then back to reality.

Have to agree with Skeptic and with saintdee...

I also think it was too early to tank the season. First of all, we should NEVER ever had to trade Baron Davis…but anyway…
But I also agree with saintdee that Al didnt want to be here and we were paying a guy huge bucks to get second and third opinions on a fake injury, and at least we got back a player capable of scoring 40 points on any given night, so thats a plus.
But I´m pretty sure this will become a frenzy with “We need Al Harrington back” or "we should trade for Harrington, he´s perfect for Nellieball…. anyway…

lol

If he can keep up with our pace.

Actually, Warriors don’t even run that much anymore. Nevermind. =/

The Warriors used to OWN Yao back in 2007, when we had all those scorers on the team making hella three’s. It was easy to play Yao back then, because there wasn’t any other big men to worry about. But now, Yao gets pressure taken off of him because of Landry and Scola; and now Artest.

2007 Strategy:

- Put Harrington on Yao.
- Let Harrington handle the ball on the perimeter to stretch the defense and make Yao tired.
- Let Harrington front Yao on defense, when the pass goes over Yao, another Warrior will be waiting on the other side of Yao ready to steal the ball.
- When Yao gets tired and gets replaced on the court with old Dikembe, put Andris back in the game to work Mutombo with his speed down low.
- Don’t let Luther Head score.
- Put Jackson on T-Mac during defense.

Man, if only we played the Rockets in the 2nd round instead of the Jazz.

Bounce back game?

Lets see if the loss against the Heat sparked something in the Warriors. I expect them to play aggressive, and with more heart/desire.

by Five Ten Entertainment on Dec 4, 2008 11:37 PM PST reply actions

i predict

AR scores ten
Andris gets a double double, then fouls out
Maggette airballs
Craw gets 25 points 6 assists 3 turnovers
Jack gets a tech

We lose in the last half second

"Damn!, i shot me"

by SlimShady on Dec 5, 2008 12:43 AM PST reply actions

I predict

Mags will guard Yao and will cuz him to get into foul trouble by drawing offensive fouls through the art form of flopping,
Crawford will follow up his performance from monday
Jack will go back to chucking.
We’ll see AR, BW, AB line up.
Marco will play for 30 secs
Morrow will shoot the lights out, if he plays.
MWilliams and Kurz will continue to sit on the bench
Tall ball on the 1s, 2nd, and 3rd quarter, then nelly will go small in 4th FTL.
Warriors lose by 10

by HoLdEmUP on Dec 5, 2008 1:49 AM PST reply actions

I'm interested

to see how Wright will do on the help defense.
Yao used to get so bothered by Harrington and the help defense as Five Ten was saying, that they’d just take him out. A good test for the youngsters.

The pop ups on this site are starting to piss me off.

Morrow DNP-CD

I gotta get on some band wagon so want to see More-O get at least 24 minutes and all the 3 point attempts . I’m pretty sure More-O can out rebound all our other smalls and it wouldn’t surprise me to see him turn into a pretty good defender, oh yeah and develop point guard handles too. . Go Andrew!!

I Predict

Some scrub on the Rockets has a career day
Maggette gets to the line 15 times
Andris gets owned by Yao, then Turiaf comes in and blocks his shots back to a waiting Rocket shooter
BW and Randolph have good games
Crawford gets fouled on a 3 four times

Hopefully this somehow leads to a Dubs win?

Belinelli drops 40 in only 6 minutes of playing time

I think Pac has a good shot,

But it’s really the perfect fight for him.

If he loses, we can all say that it’s alright considering he fought someone with six and a half inches and plenty of weight and reach on him.

But if he wins, it’s just a confirmation that he actually IS the best pound for pound in the sport.

Super pumped.

Screw De La Hoya

glad to see my fellow GSoM brethren are pullin for Pacquiao…hope he knocks out that smug bastard, but it’ll probably be a controversial split decision that leads to an insanely lucrative re-match over the summer…oh, i almost forgot, the warriors will lose, again.

by norcalr on Dec 5, 2008 11:24 AM PST reply actions

Hopefully Pacquiao Wins

The safe bet would be De La Hoya, since he’s bigger, more experienced, and has a ton of skill. But Manny is the underdog (imo) that’s very capable of winning. Kind of like how Dallas was the safe bet, except the Warriors were an underdog capable of winning; but the difference is that Manny never fought De La Hoya before.

It’ll be a tough one for Pac-man. De La Hoya is fighting in his natural weight class, while Manny has to gain hella weight in order to make the cut; Manny never fought at this weight before, so I don’t know what to expect. Will the extra weight make him stronger? Will it make him slower? Will it lower his stamina?

It’ll be a crazy fight, that’s for sure.

Wright likely has no future with the GSW warriors.

I’m not saying he has no future in the NBA, I’m just saying that unless he is hurt tonight, he has no future with this team as long as Nelson is coaching. Last game, he goes 7-13 from the field with 15 pts and 4 rebs, 2 blcks and 1 steal, and guys like CJ Watson and Rob Kurz are playing ahead of him. No offense to CJ, but his defense is atrocious.

So

This game has been infuriating. What the f*ck is going on with the calls? Yao bear hugs Maggette, no call, Scola runs into Biedrins and Yao, foul on Biedrins. F*ck this, and as Rasheed Wallace said, The NBA is no better than the WWF.

i do admit the refs are not helping us at all...

but really we put ourselves in bad positions all the time.. this is why we are susceptible to their crappy calls

by shooter1525 on Dec 5, 2008 7:55 PM PST reply actions

by mattmonay on Dec 5, 2008 7:59 PM PST reply actions

i really

dont understand why the warrior’s management cant tell what is wrong with this team. the answer is that we obviously dont have any big men. we are team full of guards…you just cant play like that…especially against teams just like the rockets…

by mattmonay on Dec 5, 2008 8:02 PM PST reply actions

I really am not upset with the play

I am upset with the coaching job. You look at our reasons for losing and it goes back to the same crap…

Late switches on D
No Boarding on second chance
Taking shots to quick

now mix in fouling out you backup center 2 minutes into the second half against one fo the biggest teams in the league

WTF

……

The NBA, where Bipolar Warrior fans happen...

by RubberDubDubs on Dec 5, 2008 8:04 PM PST reply actions

i really think

a big part about us not finishing games has to do with fatigue. we need to utilize our bench much much much more in the first half…im serious. i mean jackson, crawford, and maggette all play around 40 minutes a night—thats a lot. we always become stagnant on D in the 4th quarter, which is the most essential quarter. if we could give more playing time to the bench in the beginning of the game… our starters would play much much better in the 2nd half, when it matters. also whats up with nelson keeping turiaf in when he has 5 fouls?! its the freaking 1st half for gods sake…the more i think about it, the more i come to the conclusion that nelson deserves to be fired. keith smart should just take on the head coaching job for the rest of the season.

by gorillas on Dec 5, 2008 8:12 PM PST reply actions

ha

maybe having turiaf foul out early was the plan so that the warriors would have to go small in the end

by bogeydead4 on Dec 5, 2008 8:17 PM PST up reply actions

haha

i was saying the same thing the whole game on espn chatboard

refs before the game

“ok guys if houston misses a shot, call a foul. oh and dont look at yao’s feet just ignore all the shuffling he does with his feet, oh and if a warriors player disagrees with you throw them out of the game, and if a warriors player gets excited about a good play give him a t, direct orders from stern”

by montamazing on Dec 5, 2008 8:12 PM PST reply actions

i really hate how the refs can completely change a games outcome…its so clear that no refs respect the warriors or our players :(

by DeepS on Dec 5, 2008 8:12 PM PST reply actions

WE LOST CUZ TURIAF FOULED OUT!

I said it before the half to bench turiaf with 3 fouls, and he picks up his 4th
Then fouls out in 3rd..

by AlbinoWhale on Dec 5, 2008 8:15 PM PST reply actions

not really…we were doing fine without him until the refs started smoking crack

by DeepS on Dec 5, 2008 8:24 PM PST up reply actions

Make it obvious that we should have Hendrix on the bench for these situations , we could send Bellineli. to bakerfield and never miss him with morrow on the roster.

I stopped watching...

After Maggette tied it with (gasp!) a 3 at when there were around 7 minutes left in the fourth. The dubs usually blow leads or let things slip away when they’re tied and I’m watching, so I tried something new- leaving the game be until the final minute.

I didn’t think I’d open up league pass again to see another warrior massacre…. :( We were playing so well up to the middle of the fourth.

also I missed the game because I stayed late for work.

the refs were bad

like real bad. dubs played a pretty good game tho, but it just shows us where we really are. our best game can’t even get us within single digits of a good team

by AJC3317 on Dec 5, 2008 10:54 PM PST reply actions

Wow,

what do we even say about this team. I cant find any silver lining anywhere. Hopefully if an when Ellis gets back the team is a bit more entertaining atleast.

Oh for those of you who play in NBA 2K9 (x360 for me)

Here’s my Lineup XD
G Ellis (Starter-I want you to be the star of this team)
G Jackson (still-Starter-your position is guaranteed)
F Randolph (Starter-I want you to be the star of this team)
F Wright (Starter-I want you to be the star of this team)
C Biedrins (Starter-I want you to be the star of this team)

I’m lacking a 2 guard, I put in either Morrow or Belineli when Jack retires
