If Not Nelson Then Who?

Massively entertained by the back and forth ranting over whether Nelson knows anything at all about basketball.  Just like the arguments we have over certain players from time to time.  The thing is, when we get on players about their deficiencies, we usually offer an alternative (if not Crawford then Marbury, for example).

I just read 78 comments on an anti-Nelson post and only one replacement (Avery) was mentioned.  So come on, then!  If we're so fed up with Don Nelson, who should his replacement be?  Names:

Keith Smart: Knows the system (what system?), generally respected and well-liked.  No head coaching bona fides.  Too close to the same old?

Flip Saunders:  A well-liked coach whose offensive systems are now completely exposed.  Hey, bonus points--he's already allergic to defense!

Avery Johnson: A superhero.  Former Warrior.  Got done wrong by the only owner we hate more than our own.  Unfortunately, he's pretty serious, passionate, committed, and believes in defense.  Hmm.  Definitely not a good fit for this squad.

Ettore Messina?  Eddie Jordan?  Sam Mitchell?  PJ Carlesimo? Okay, okay.  I'll be the straight man.  You guys do all the PJ punchlines.

Somebody new?  Who?  Your thoughts.  And go ahead and throw in your dream wishes for a new owner and front office executive as well.  What the hell, it's Christmas.

Put Musselman on the poll

He showed a lot of promise in a short time.

Eddie Jordan

Is he defensive minded? I don’t recall the wizards being a lock down crew?

I don't want...

…Eddie Jordan. His Washington teams had many of the same issues our current squad does. I know for a fact there are two stalwart defensive guys, Avery Johnson and Jeff Van Gundy, unsigned and unfettered. JVG’s teams are traditionally hellish to watch, though, and the value of entertainment isn’t lost on me, so Id pick Avery of the two, and I’d do so in a minute.

Of the less high profile guys out there, Keith Smart seems like a worthy guy. I was one of Musselman’s ardent supporters in his day, but it seems like there might be serious bad blood with him. I was also a big fan of Mario Elie, but he bolted ship when Nelson arrived.

I readily admit...

…that he’s a bit of a screecher, but what we need is to establish a winning culture. Nelson flirted with that after the Dallas upset at the 48 win season last year, but it was all dramatics and tight rope acts every game. Avery Johnson could get us to the point where we expect to make the playoffs year in and year out. That’s the single most important thing we need. Until we shake off this stigma that Golden State is a loser franchise, we’ll never have the draw we need to land and keep the really stellar players.

Not to mention, he HAS been to the finals in his first few years. All Dallas hating aside, that’s pretty damn impressive.

Avery

We need someone who teaches defense. I like Smart, but it will be a fast paced system again.

Hasheem "The Dream" Thabeet or Brandon Jennings. A Warrior in 09.
With the 6th Pick in the 2009 MLB Draft, the SF Giants pick Donovan Tate.
Andre Smith in Silver & Black in 2009.

We are the worst defensive team in the L!

Any one new will be a better defensive coach then Nelson by default. Beside we need better players. Maggs, Crawford, and when Monta comes back are the worst defenders in basketball! I know the Wiz hand most of the problems we did, and he still coached them to the playoffs. Why would Avery on JVG take the Warriors job? The TOR job has more talent, and I got a feeling Avery is not trying to follow the Don Nelson Show again, because the last time didn’t work out well for him. But like it our not I think we can get Jordan, and try to find a D-Minded ass. for him. With our talent I think he would run a good system for us.

by Prettyugly on Dec 7, 2008 1:53 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

I think...

…following the Don Nelson show worked out pretty damn well for Avery. He was more successful in his first few years than virtually any other coach in league history.

no one

nelson should be our coach.

by HoLdEmUP on Dec 7, 2008 2:41 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

Keith Smart

He’s already there and knows the players, the other coaches, and the front office. He can take the things that work out of Nellie’s system (what there is of it) and make the transition to a style that fits the team (versus making the team fit the style — which has been Nellie’s stubborn style). We don’t need to bring in someone from the outside – there’s been too many key player changes as it is.

Does anyone know how Smart would really coach? Does he have a history of head coaching we can review?

In all fairness

I believe Nelson is a good trainer and coach, but lets his stubbornness get in the way. I’d like him to stay and train with the young guys. Avery Johnson can come in as a defensive coordinator and actually handle some of the coaching duties. In a world of Mullin and Nelson, this can happen. We just need an offensive coordinator who understands spacing and passing. Plus Nelson has to loosen the reins or let go completely – his pride is getting in the way.

by GoldenBlue on Dec 7, 2008 5:09 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

Unfortunately...

…it’s not as simple as a world of Nelson and Mullin. It’s more like a world of Nelson and Rowell and Cohan with Mullin locked in a broom closet. Avery Johnson’s not going to be our defensive coordinator, either. He’s got one of the best starts to an NBA head coaching career ever on the books, he’s not going to play number two to Don Nelson again.

Might not fit the squad right now

But I like the thought of Avery.
Our team is selfish and undiciplined. We need a good kick in the ass

Avery would be great!

Some one tell me how our front office can get Avery?

by Prettyugly on Dec 7, 2008 7:53 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

Keith or Rick

I would definitely give Keith Smart a shot. This team is built for speed and offense, so a little continuity wouldn’t be a bad thing. Also, Keith played for a pretty good defensive coach, Bobby Knight. In my heart I would really like to see Rick Barry given a chance to coach at the NBA level if he is still interested. The man has been practically blackballed by the NBA and disrespected by his former team. He was a popular and effective coach in the old Continental League and certainly knows the game. I believe the players would listen to a Hall of Famer.

Avery

If The Don were to be gone, I’d have Avery step in in an instatnt. He was tought soem good stuff by Nellie and Greg Popavic in San Antonio; those guys know a little about winning.

Avery took a talented squad to the Finals and lost; don’t discredit that even if Dallas choked against Shaq and DWade.

Avery would bring something to the table that the Dubs need in order to be a contender every year-BALANCE! God love Nellie, but his Warrior teams have never had any defense and you can see where its taking them. Yes they score a lot, but they couldn’t defend a 3rd grade CYO team.

by gabezgsw on Dec 8, 2008 10:55 AM PST reply actions   0 recs

all the reasons stated is why I like Flip Saunders

he has had good success with good talent and without a superstar, he will play the young guys and put defense first.

Avery’s only proved he can win with Dirk in a system that was handed to him that all he had to do was tweak a little.

I like Mussleman also but I don’t think he has a good report with the players, but he may have learned his lesson in Sac.

Dallas Mavs

Remember Avery Johnson took over for Nellie after he left for the Warriors and see how well they played? Granted we beat them in playoffs but that’s probably more to do with Nellie knowing the Mav players from being their head coach for a few years.

Ellis to the RIM!
Monta for the win?! YES!
