Are we tanking?
I've been a little confused lately. At this point it's pretty clear that Don Nelson is not putting the team in the best position to win. You get a pretty good idea of this just by perusing the 10-15 "Fire Don Nelson" FanPost floating around here. We all know that small-ball has not been effective this year. The defense has been horrible. They are not forcing turnovers at the rate they did in previous seasons, so we aren't getting out on the break as much. Lots of problems.
Now add to that the fact that Jackson is having an MRI on his injured left hand today and may choose to sit out for an extended period of time, despite the fact that he has managed to play through the pain for a few games now.
Also add to the pile some of the rumors going around that Maggs is on the block. It seems from what I've read, that despite probably having to include Wright they aren't looking for much back outside of a prospect and cap relief.
So is the joke on us? Are we already in tank mode? Did Monta's injury combined with the slow start and front office turmoil seal the deal for us this year. I don't think many reasonable people expected to sniff the playoffs this year, but I know that I didn't think we'd look this bad.
Hey, even JAE is posting conspiracy theories. Something must be going on. What do you guys think?
This FanPost is a submission from a member of the mighty Golden State of Mind community. While we're all here to throw up that W, these words do not necessarily reflect the views of the GSoM Crew. Still, chances are the preceding post is Unstoppable Baby!

Why would we tank on a weak draft class?
Hasheem "The Dream" Thabeet or Brandon Jennings. A Warrior in 09.
With the 6th Pick in the 2009 MLB Draft, the SF Giants pick Donovan Tate.
Andre Smith in Silver & Black in 2009.

Not saying we should…but imagine putting Blake Griffin on this team? Our 4 goes from a weakness to a strength instantly. Oh god, you know the Warriors are back, I’m lotto dreaming in December.

its a little early to write the entire draft class off, there are actually a lot of talented young college players right now and if 6 or 7 of them really broke out and entered the draft it would be a strong class. Blake Griffin is legit, but I dont think we’re gonna catch the Thunder in horribleness

Yea
Griffin looks like this years Beasley, but barely. His jumper is no good. Thabeet’s draft stock is shooting up big time, but…
Rubio looks like he wont declare and is coming off an injury.
Jennings is not looking great in the Euroleague right now.
I’m not sold on BJ yet.
And there are other good players, but they’re SG’s and SF’s.

Stephen Curry is playing point, Jrue Holiday is looking pretty good
But yea I agreee the most poetential is among SGs/SFs which make the Jax extension and Maggette signing look all the worse

not a weak draft class… blake griffin, stephen curry, brandon jennings are all all stars in the making…. i would love any of the 3 here…. hasheem thabeet isnt bad either. and then good swingmen like james harden (which we dont need but will probably draft)
its no draft of 2003, but the top few picks r low risk high reward guys compared to years of olowakandis and eddie currys

hmmm upon further review, might not be much star potential after 5… all the more reason to tank!
by Warriors510 on Dec 10, 2008 2:18 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
It is a weak draft class
There is only one 5 Star prospect so far and that is Blake Griffin. On my list he barely makes it, because his jumper is almost non-existent.
There are 4 Stars like Jennings, Thabeet, Rubio among others and as of now they might not declare. Curry at this point in time for me is barely a 4 as well. Why? Because so far all he can do is shoot, there are no other good prospects on his team, his potential is not that high, and they have only played 1 ranked game so far. He really reminds me of JJ Reddick.

is rubio going pro? if he is i put him at 5 star… hes ridiculous for a 17 year old. he will be great (eventually) but i think he could be like tony parker…. in that contributing and good very young (although they have different game)

We are just bad
and I would like to have pietrus at 25 million/4 yrs than maggette at 50 million/5 yrs.
Can you imagine a lineup of crawford montae jack maggette biedrins?
our fg% will be like 40% with montae and biedrins being the only ones shooting a decent %

r y freakin nuts? Pietrus was an major underacheiver and a hack compared to Mags

at just a little over half the cost, though…….eh, I dunno, its close. I’d have to go with the “none of the above” choice.

we should tank
weak draft class smash class. theres a superstar in every draft, and we need one!
by HoLdEmUP on Dec 8, 2008 2:00 PM PST reply actions 0 recs
this team isnt going to tank until we see what the team looks like with monta in the lineup
for a couple weeks. if it still looks terrible then we might tank
but something suspicious. maggette and randolph and possibly jackson are sitting out when we play the worst team in the league. its almost like they’re setting it up as an excuse so we can’t actually say for sure whether they’re tanking this game.

we definitely aren't tanking....
despite.. 2, 3, 4, or maybe even 8 blowout games… I believe the our team is still trying to win….

Update:
Ok, so this post was meant to only be semi-serious, but with Jackson, Maggs and AR sitting out tonight I can’t help but wonder. We can’t possibly really be tanking this early can we? Maybe it’s just really bad luck. Maybe it’s the curse of Thunder the mascot.
Or maybe, as most GSoMers agree, we just suck that much…

Story of the Warriors
We’ll win 10 game the whole 3/4 of the season then we’ll win bulk of the last 20 games just enough to push us into the bottom of the Top 10.

I think
if we don’t get the #1 pick in the draft, we trade our pick and wright for the #1 pick.
by duballers23 on Dec 8, 2008 4:45 PM PST reply actions 0 recs
in a draft like this year's
no one is dealing the top pick. griffin looks head and shoulders better than everyone else, despite the fact that he hasn’t looked like the kind of guy to set the nba on fire. the rest of the draft is pretty sketchy and i assume that whoever gets the 1 is hanging on to it.

Then
we draft Blake Griffin and then we got a lineup: monta,crawford,jackson/maggette if hes still around, griffin, biedrins. Pretty beasty.

it's interesting
most teams would tank by playing their young guys for extended minutes. but our young guys have been out performing our veterans for most of the season. so maybe we’re secretly tanking by keeping our veterans in, that way no one can actually accuse us of tanking

assumptions
- this is a rough patch with injuries, illness etc.
- Nelson wants to win to catch Lenny Wilkens, show he can get teams to over-achieve (again)
- Fire Nelson Fanposts do NOT represent analysis, they represent frustration; a year and half ago Nelson could have been sainted on GSoM – he hasn’t changed that much but the roster sure has
- everyone here realizes we’re fuggin young right? that the lads do NOT understand the level of defensive concentration necessary to rotate correctly yet?
- in the long run (1) Jackson should never have been extended & (2) Crawford’s contract is not going to balance out the satisfaction of quickly shipping Harrington out (3) Maggs will pay off when a more balanced roster is assembled
- as for hoopsworld posting that Maggs is on the block, when was the last time that source accurately predicted a Warrior trade other than Harrington?
- Monta is still recovering, and we’ll be better off having him play than Jackson providing Monta is healthy enough to perform near 100%
- even with a healthy Monta-Jax-Maggs-Harrington-Andris lineup, the playoffs were iffy; now we’re without 3/5 of that lineup for the time being
what’s the point of wringing our hands and knashing teeth? the whining needs to stop on this site – and the lack of direction needs to cease in the front office. Fire Nelson? How about fire Mullin and Rowell both?! They created this multi-headed cow of a roster, let them take the fall in the manure. Nelson too? Fine, name a better replacement then fire his ass too. But until we have better decision-makers upstairs we’re not going to get better decision-making by the coaches and players.
even Nelson can’t make chicken salad outa chicken shit

what coach, available or unavailable, do you honestly believe could turn this group into a playoff contender? Keep in mind that if you bring in a more defensive minded coach, the offense will suffer. I hate how awful we are, but its still the most fun to watch awful team I’ve seen in quite some time.

draft
well, there’s no point in tanking this season as the draft class is weak this year. Unless we go all out tanking and hope to get a top 3 draft pick, there’s not much point in getting another pick.
Ellis to the RIM!
Monta for the win?! YES!
by XIAOXIAO on Dec 8, 2008 9:55 PM PST reply actions 0 recs
I would be willing to trade
Wright or Randolph + Maggette just for a pick or a decent player with a contract expiring this year or next. Thats how bad of a fit Maggs is, heck I would honestly toss Maggette, Randolph, Marco, and Marcus Williams for an expiring and a first.
There is no way we can trade Jack(ty RR for that great extension) so lets atleast get rid of Maggete.
Ellis to the rim.

why would you get rid of randolph?
he’s improved way more then wright and he’s only been playing for a few months i rather get rid of wright williams marco and maggette for a decent PF even tho i still think AL was the best pf for the warriors grabbing boards and stroking the 3 but this rebuilding year suck for the fans we allmiss barnes and peitrus
by Fi7ipin0ch3f on Dec 9, 2008 4:37 AM PST up reply actions 0 recs
I wouldnt toss in Randolph to get rid of him. Theres gotta be a team desperate enough for another legit scorer at the deadline to take him off our hands for a couple contracts that expire over the next 1-3 years. The post by the Hornets fan was encouraging. A team like that, that knows it isnt gonna be a player in the 2010 FA sweepstakes, could be willing to take Mags on if they can dump a couple of spare parts.
