Do We Make a Move?

With the proposed trade of Jason Kidd going to Dallas, I have a question to all of you.  Do you think we should trade this year, and will we?  Also, if we don't trade can we still compete with the elite teams of the west?  I'm an optimist when it comes to Warriors basketball, but this Jason Kidd trade really makes me wonder if we could get out of the first round of the playoffs again this year.  I'm really curious to see what you all think.

No we don't trade, we don't sell the future for the playoffs this year. With the core of AB, Monta, Wright, Marco and Buike we are primed to be a force in this league for years to come, under no circumstance do we trade any of them for a brief shot at the playoffs this year. We keep developing them and start to build a reliable bench for the coming years.

I second that
Let the other teams mortgage their futures for this postseason.  If the managed properly, GS, Portland, LA, NO will rise to the top in the coming years.

i totally agree with you
a lot of GSOM will panic but really aren't we used to not making the playoffs? with all these moves in the last week or two theres no way we'd make survive the first round.  we're having hard time getting a slot in west as it is cause we cant beat the bulls and minnesota at home and we can barely beat below par 500 teams.
i dont get it?  but one thing i do get is that when the dubz start losing again, GSOM will be a lot different (or maybe the same as last year before the "we believe" stuff.)
win or lose... playoffs or lottery... i gotta luv them dubz! GSW 4 Life!!!

welcome to GSOM
but you know how it is when a team starts losing then no one shows up to the home games.  i was just saying after its all said and done and we dont make the playoffs (knock on wood) will the overflow of diaries be here? hmmm.

i can go on silverandblackpride to check up on my team and i see diary entries from last months but once free agency, the combine is comes around so does everyone else!  then we start losing and those same people stop posting!  you can see were im coming from dont you?  but hey hopefully your here for the long run and again, welcome to GSOM... it rocks dont it?

Yes
This site is awesome.
I just heard about it. Glad I found it.
Im born and raised Dubs fan.
Its awesome to have such a collective of fans in one place.

Regarding Trades we should just see how this season plays out. give the guys some time to play. Unless something comes up that will really really help us.

We are not playing really great right now but we are Still WINNING. Post all star break will be a huge proving ground for us. Make or break.

I see us doing well. Heres to hoping!

Agreed
but if we can get a discount, might as well.  We should not feel pressured to trade just to keep up with Fakers, Suns, Dallass, but if an opportunity to add a good player without sacrificing our core comes up, go for it.

Budding future?
IMO we are being a little over-optimistic about the pieces in place for the future:

Monta Ellis- I'm sold that he is going to be a very special component in Nellie's style of offense.  Probably will never be served manning the point though.  Still a stud...

AB- Also thrives in an up and down flow, is scrappy and long.  But AB has shown no post game and seems to rely on a creative point guard and/or skilled passers to get him looks when he slashes.  He is undersized as a defender and disappears on both the offensive and defensive end in some games.  What happened to AB the the shot blocker?  He has to stay at home more and anchored to the floor in order to box out and rebound for an undersized lineup.  All told, he may not be a franchise piece but rather, a product of the unorthodox style of play.

Marco Bellinelli-  Where are all the ball skills?  What about the scrappy defense and quick hands?  Marco came into the league being criticized for his streaky shooting and has yet to provide a glimpse of the hot side of that streakiness.  He has just looked sloooooow and timid in short stints.  He has displayed very little of the savvy Euro-ball IQ that I think so many of us were looking for with him (ie: Manu Ginobli).  I watched the summer ball games and get the optimism from that but see no reason to believe that this guy will be any better than a Jiri Welsch

BWright- Extremely skinny, best suited for the 3 spot but hasn't the handles nor jumper to fit the SF spot.  He can sure dunk with those long arms though!  His frame just isn't built to bang underneath and provide the rebounding and/or shot blocking prowess necessary in the bulk-heavy WC.  Do we envision him blossoming into a T Prince type player?  Tayshaun had handles and a top of the key jumper that were prominent in his game at 20 though.  I just don't get the optimism with him.  Nelson is no idiot and knows that BW could relieve a huge weakness with his long arms...but BW gets no PT and is rarely  credited with being a good practice player.  Let's face it, BW is only here because he was percieved to be the last piece necessary to land Garnett...no Garnett...?

Kazu- Was aggressive, confident and exciting to watch early in the season.  Has turned into a timid mouse with no attack and no sense of slashing in the lane.  Kazu has always been a physical specimen and had a nice college game but went undrafted.  I no longer feel confident that Kazu is capable as more than a 8th man off the bench with size and speed but limited handles, no great instincts on D and a lack of that mean streak that a guy with his body should have.

Kosta, POB, Watson- Puhlease

Salaries etc- We have created a small bit of wiggle room to be involved in the FA market next year which gives us some flexibility regarding the direction of this team.

To me, it seems obvious that the pieces that make this team truly special are in place now and if we wanted to build on last season's momentum, now is the time to do it.  BD is the last true perennial all star candidate we have had in 10 years.  SJax is riding some serious confidence this season.  Even M Barnes is poised to produce more this year than he ever will given his lack of talents.  Whether we like it or not, the next two to three seasons may be our chance to build on the lasting euphoria of last year's run and selling that magic for an unknown fortune years down the road seems  like a bigger risk to me.

by Number22Drew on Feb 13, 2008 2:19 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

NO
We don't have any wiggle room in the FA market.

We'd have to renounce the rights to AB/Monta and have Baron opt out just to have money.

We're still hamstrung by Adonal, Jax and Harrington accumulating 30+MM of the cap.

I can understand why you think Brandan is suited for the 3. But he's not a 3, never was. He's 6'10'' and 215lbs. Garnett was just as skinny coming into the league and now look at him, still skinny but is one of the best post defenders in the league. Tayshaun was a 3 in college, always was.

You so readily knock the young guys who receive little-inconsistent-or no playing time. Yet you don't criticize the veteran players for their own faults, because it is them, more than our young guys that leads us down the inconsistent path.

You say we have a two year window, well how do you propsose to do so? I assume you want to sell every young piece we have.

We have two different views of this team.

Warriors, Stupidest franchise in the league.

Out of the box thoughts
It may be time the FO considered life in the Lux Tax Bracket considering the NICE and Proven pieces we have glued together.  Can't we credit last year's resurgence to the return of the Nelson system, thriving with the proper components to make it roll.  How much longer do we have with these components in place (ie: Nelson, Baron, SJax, Al, Monta as a scorer not distributor)?

This is the most exciting time in GSW basketball for the last 15 years.  I'm not in love with the idea of relying on a future with kids who thrive in a  Nellie system (AB,ME) combined with potential talents (MB,BW), while ignoring what we have now.  There is young talent budding all over the league.

One thing I percieve:  We have a player now that, in the playoffs, in proven clutch situations, is one of the top 5 players in the league (Baron).  Combine that with another special player, playing special ball and whom also has ice water in his veins (Stephen Jackson).  Addititonally, some other nice players, playing roles necessary to win (even ugly) and we seem to have the variables of a truly competitive and SPECIAL team.

IMO we must take risks, we must sacrifice security for a chance to be elite!  It is time to be aggressive and wily and I hope Mullin agrees.

Kenntoe- I really feel like this is more about the concept of this team's relevance now, as a potential part of the story of this era of basketball than it is about the shortcomings of the vets, the components to the engine so to speak and the crazy system of our unforgettably unique GSW Squad...

i'm w/ you on most of your points
Basically, we missed out on KG. The only other big who might have been able to put us over the top this year is Sheed and he's not going anywhere. There are no healthy and in their prime Zo's in the league. Everyone else is meh.

So what we're left w/ is do we take a chance w/ Brand or J O'Neal?

I don't know how much of an expert David Thorpe is but he has this to say about Wright

February 13, 2008

I watched Wright's entire pregame workout in Oakland last week, and I loved what I saw. The drills were spirited and smart, and Wright oozes skill and talent. On another team, I think he would stand out in this class.

Only one workout, but at least it's positive... can't say the same for Marco
February 13, 2008

I wasn't impressed with Belinelli during a pregame Warriors workout. The Warriors have improved his athleticism a bit, but I'm not sure he has the desire to reshape his body the way he probably needs to.

The info's on the espn rookie page

I'm with
kenntoe.

our only shot at truly contending this season or next is to trade Harrington and Wright for a big man that fits and can bang with Duncan, Boozer, Bynum etc.  CWebb is not that guy, and quite frankly I don't even know if that guy can be had for what we can give up. period.

Can't be too sure
I'm thinking that there may be a short list of impact scenarios out there that Mullin may have invariably run across while working the phones.

I could see a combination of an Artest deal to include a third team and say...one of Atlanta's active bigs or perhaps an impact (Bobby Jackson type backup PG)(Kyle Lowry, Juan Carlos.)

We can still out-quick everybody in the league.  Perhaps more  firepower at the swing positions to overwhelm our opponents.  Plus, I like the idea of having a few more defenders who get into passing lanes and force our brand of play (speed, speed, speed)...(Magette)

Perhaps another long, energy-laden, ball handling swing man who could allow us to go big at the skill positions as an alternative to our typical starting five.  Something Pietrus did alot better last year in the playoffs.  We were so quick to rebounds with any combo of Barnes, AB and MP on the court lineup.   (Childress?)

by Hoof on Feb 13, 2008 4:12 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Short of getting improvement
down low, we won't make the playoffs. Artest doesn't make us contenders. Same thing with Denver--getting Artest doesn't make them contenders either. We need a dominant bigman that plays defense, rebounds, scores efficiently and can command a double team. How many of those are on the market? Jermaine O'Neal? A. He's hurt and would therefore be a major risk and gamble. B. Indy might be hesitant to trade with us again.

If we can solve all those problems and still keep one of AB, Wright, and Monta, then it might be in the warriors interest to deal some youngins. But the fact that there seems none available, healthy, and /or fitting, then i can't say that i'd "go for broke" this year or next.

I'd accumulate young talent and let Baron play out his contract imo.

Won't make the playoffs?
I don't know about that.  In fact, I give this team a 90% chance of making the playoffs, though I know I'm in the minority on this site.

I would trade
MP and POB for someone who could bring toughness and a defensive presence.

We all know both are going to walk after this season, so we should try to address our glaring weakness with them.

Nellie will never play POB, and MP has been playing over Buki for showcasing purposes.  Both are expiring contracts and you can say that they have unrealized potential.

We don't need any more superstars on the team, just trade them to add some depth that Nellie will use.

by misterjennings on Feb 13, 2008 1:20 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

you won't get that for those two
especially since both can easily leave the team that trades for them at season's end.

judging by nellie's comments, it seems the offers are for 10-12th men (nellie basically said Pietrus is an NBA player and that they'll only trade him for an NBA player).

(What did you tell him?)
I told him exactly what you would think I would tell him: That we're not just going to trade him because he wants to be traded, and if we can get a player for him, we'll trade him, and if we can't, he's gonna stay here. Real simple. It has to be somebody that we like, somebody that can help us. He's an NBA player. I have to get an NBA player back for him that I like. I like Pietrus. When he's playing, I like him.

Playoffs?
Jim Mora said it best, "Playoffs?"  We will need the Earth, Moon and Sun to align correctly in order to make the Playoffs.  Yao and TMac not even making the Playoffs sounds too strange...That leaves us in the 9 spot.  I guess we just have to pray Portland and Houston take a severe dump in order for us to make it.  Damn...

Confusion about the future?
I don't understand the "future" argument. Last I looked our future is sitting at the end of the bench or wearing suits and is getting barely any play time. If the franchise was so concerned about the future, they would try and develop these players so they are ready to contribute in the near future. Not going to happen under Nelson.
I understand not wanting to trade young pieces away at a shot of going deep into the playoffs, but we do have extra pieces we can trade without sending out a young guy. Pietrus is just one we can dump off and try to get some help. We are not going to get a big name because Mullin doesn't want to add a big contract, but there are a few players out there that can bolster our depth.

Make a Move
I'm tired of GSoM complacency.  Baron isn't a spring chicken, and, much as I love em', the current team can't win three series in the Western Conference. Harrington is an enticing chip to some teams, and should be dealt for a PF. In fantasy dream world we get Jamison or JSmoove.
