A (Non) Trade Diary

Trade diaries are popping up and down on this site, so much my index finger is hurting from scrolling too much.

So in light of the many trade diaries we have, I have chosen to talk about something else.

I was at the Sun's game yesterday and this was my second time watching them play at Roaracle.

I couldn't help but notice how the suns readjusted their game philosphy against us, and for a while it worked.

If you guys happen to notice when the sun's were on offense, they ran the same play probablly 20 times through of the game: Nash holding point. get's a screen from Bell and Baron forced to switch gets mis-matched guarding Diaw in the post.  Diaw obviously towering over Baron would back Baron down, Jackson would come and help, and Diaw kicks it out to either Hill, or Barbosa on the wing, and they hit the three.

I've watched every Warriors game this season, and can tell you this is our true weakness when defending.  Any team who has a PF capable of passin out of a double team, and a capable 3-point shooter runs, this same play on us everytime, and most of the time they win.  I see this happen all the time when we play Detroit, Boston, Phoneix, New Orleans, and Utah.

This is how teams beat the Warriors, I wonder if Nellie (obviously he does, but does nothing.) see's the same thing too. That's why I always get worried if our opposing opponent has a pretty capable PF, it's truly one of our major weakness.

What do you guys think?

This FanPost is a submission from a member of the mighty Golden State of Mind community. While we're all here to throw up that W, these words do not necessarily reflect the views of the GSoM Crew. Still, chances are the preceding post is Unstoppable Baby!

The answer is to trade POB and Kosta and Marco
Actually I noticed the same thing. Although I wouldn't go as far as to say "This is how teams beat the Warriors". After all, lots of plays work against the Warriors. Like the old, drive around your man for an uncontested lay-up play.

But yah, it's a problem and I guess the solution would depend on who the point guard is. Most of them the lesser of three evils would be to just go uner the screen. Even Nash, who can shoot may be uncomfortable having his offense reduced repeatedly shooting jumpers.

Although I suspect Nelson goes with this theory to force the offensive team to make extra passes which opens up opportunities to steal the ball and away they go down the other end. If you force the other team to shoot jumpers, you then have a conventional rebounding situation and we know how that can go, especially against Utah. You would always rather have a turnover than a missed shot because it's the perfect efensive result and it has a higher % chance of turining into an offensive mismatch on the other end.

So you asked why and that's the best that I can come up with.

we won
so, they don't beat us every time at least ...

Nelson chose not to help off the shooters and play 2x2 late in the game because we were quicker than Diaw is longer, and it worked - this time

look, I'm not quibbling over the fact that our roster is flawed - I'm the broken record ...

but if you watch Phoenix 10% as much as you watch GSW, you'd know that the Suns run that against everyone not just us ... and that's why they've one of the best records in the league ...

and, we beat them at their own game, this time at least ...

No, you're right
That's a pretty basic play.

The high screen
has always been a problem with the Warriors.  I remember the Hornets were doing the same thing to us.

The good thing about that play is with Baron is 1) he is probably the hardest PG in the league to post up because of his strength and 2) he also might be able to slap the ball away with his super quick hands.

God help us if they start swinging the ball to Monta's man more often and running that screen play.

The fact is limiting the opposing team to perimeter shots is a pretty good game plan, because they might be open but they are more than likely to miss those shots as opposed to one closer to the basket.  It's like Phil Jackson's strategy against us.  Even if the early outside shots are falling early for the Dubs, he is so stubborn to make sure we don't get into the paint easily that he gives us the three pointers the whole game.  Lakers have beat us twice this year using that strategy.

LAL also
pounds it inside, abuses our bigs into foul trouble, goes to the FT line, etc.

oh, ya and that Kobe guy's pretty good

Don't double down when Baron gets switched
Of course a taller 2, 3, or 4 who gets switched to Baron is going to have a supposed advantage, but Baron holds his own to the point where the opposing player will put up some ugly looking shots.  Can you name a player who baron got switched on and started to abuse him?  I think he muscles up well and the refs give him a little more leeway with the pushing and leverage.  I like our style of help-defense with our cast of players to disrupt passing lanes, tip balls, and/or come up with steals.  They just need to be more aware of who actually needs help instead of doubling everyone with the ball and not staying down on the original assignment.

this is
how good teams play.  They take advantage of mismatches and the open man on double-teams.  You're overthinking this.

Completely Overthinking it
We've beat the suns both times this season already (first time in a more convincing fashion). So if this was a secret to beating us then well they would be beating us.

Every team has certain weaknesses and/or plays they love to run. A play the suns like to run is one of our supposed weaknesses but it's not something that's beat us. There have been only a couple games this year where we've just flat out been out played and lost. Most of our Losses have just come down to a few minutes/plays that didn't go our way or poor shooting nights.

When warriors play their  A game it really takes a lot to beat them...the trick is getting that A game every game for 4 quarters. That's the issue---not passing out of double teams.

Warriors...nuff said.
