yea i was like wtf
why was thunder there lol

by vietnameezboy on Feb 16, 2008 11:32 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

yeah
i was glad thunder was there reppin for golden state. he also had on a baron jersey.

but yeah, that superman dunk was ridiculous. he willed that ball in there. no clue how he got that in on his first try CRAAZYYY.

my favorite was the off the backboard with the left and then slamming it with his right. never seen anything like that while MIDAIR, so nasty.

props to gerald green too. between the legs in socks?!? most entertaining dunk when he blew out the candle. if he dunked it with one hand, it would have probably been a lot nicer. the idea though was dope.

If had dunked with one hand
He could have eaten the cupcake with the other. In mid-air. Now that would have been dope.

Or even better, he could have switched the cupcake out for a donut, a much more manly baked good, which would have given new meaning to the phrase "dunkin' donuts..."

I personally liked the
no shoes between the leg dunk and blowing out the candle by Gerald Green, but Dwight earned it with those sick dunks.

anybody else think
that monta could throw up some pretty crazy dunks if he was selected for the dunk contest?

by lowchi on Feb 17, 2008 12:14 AM PST reply actions   0 recs

i dont think
so. Monta doesn't look like a spectacular dunker.

Dwight Howard
is a monster!
Those dunks were very original and extremely crazy. Props to Gerald Green for the no-shoe dunk and birthday cake thing, those were pretty good also. But man, Dwight Howard was way more original and entertaining.

by semarubaka on Feb 17, 2008 1:01 AM PST reply actions   0 recs

ya
as good as gerald's dunk was it felt like we've seen too many variation of that same move.

by saintdee on Feb 17, 2008 1:39 AM PST reply actions   0 recs

while dwights dunks were nice
who thought that this one was totally overhyped and over rated.. i mean the whole act and the superman thing was entertaining and all but, HE DIDN'T EVEN DUNK IT.. he threw it in the hoop, since when is that cool?  idk this year was kinda weak, it seems like theyre not really creative, theyre more gimicky.. w/e tho, it was aiight.

by Proof on Feb 17, 2008 2:26 AM PST reply actions   0 recs

yup
I thought this was the dunk contest, not the throw-it-into-the-net contest.

And I still blame Jason Kapono's lack of passing skills for Jamario Moon not taking the title.

by jlagace on Feb 17, 2008 2:30 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

i thought rudy
gay and moon were both over hyped but for a good reason... it's the slam dunk competition.  its over hyped every year!  but i think Dwight Howard's dunks will go up there in slam dunk history with MJ, DR. J, Jrich, VC's and Chris "Birdman" Anderson!

come to think about it,really i cant remember too much of anyone else dunk competition  but VC's or Jrich's.  and

win or lose... playoffs or lottery... i gotta luv them dubz! GSW 4 Life!!!

Agreed on Dwights Dunk
I think the whole point of it was that he bent back to dunk it insted of just going straight, like MJ and Dr.J did. Still, I admire him because every single dunk was creative, instead of a couple creative dunks and then a couple regular one.

On the other hand
Rudy Gay disappointed me. All that smack talk and nothing to show for it. He should just raised the rim to 13ft and dunk on it. Hopefully he learns a lesson here.

And my favorite dunk would have to be Dwight's first one. I just like how his head was all the way back behind the backboard when he threw that dunk. No one really pointed that out.

by lightz0ut on Feb 17, 2008 2:30 AM PST reply actions   0 recs

j-rich
even though dwight's dunks were insanely raw, i still think that j-rich's '02-'03 championship run was the best slam dunk contests til this day. i mean c'mon, the man threw it off the backboard and put it in between his legs and ripped it! and you can't forget he did the between the legs in reverse too! i wonder why he never gets to judge? other than michael jordan, he's the only one to win the contest back to back. i guess the league never considered him an elite dunker.

JRich
His dunk contest performances were probably top 5 of all time.

But I guess you never saw what Vince Carter did in the dunk contest.

by jlagace on Feb 17, 2008 3:31 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Whoaaa
I know a lot of people are saying "he didn't even touch the rim!"...  but that's why it's so amazing. How many people in the league can forcibly throw the ball down the rim with authority -- while the rim is out of reach? I really don't think anyone in the league can get that high to have an angle...

If he really wanted to make contact with the rim, he could have. I mean, he took off from a two-foot plant afterall...

by beetea on Feb 17, 2008 3:54 AM PST reply actions   0 recs

Still got to say...
...the Birdman was the best I've ever seen. Bad in a good way.

Dwight Howard had a couple good dunks but the dunk contest is completely stupid these days. Way too many props and no originality. I mean how many times do we have to see the through the legs dunk already? Socks only, blindfolded, cupcakes, etc. it's all a joke.

Bring back Cadilac Anderson.

That was pretty awesome
but wheres Jeff Hornacek? Was he retired already? Lol.

the through the legs
dunk is still probably the best dunk out there right now if they do it good.  they just gotta add stuff to it like JRich did off the glass and stuff like that.

i dont know why
i dont understand why people are criticizing howard's superman throwdown so much. throwing it into the hoop is far more difficult than dunking it from where he took off. dwight said it himself. i dont know anyone else in the NBA who has enough jump to get over the height of the rim and even be able to attempt to throw it down into the rim. if it's better than dunking it, why isnt there any reason not to consider it?

one of the better dunk contests in a long time. its getting harder now to get original.

by bun on Feb 17, 2008 9:39 AM PST reply actions   0 recs

It was the first ever reverse finger-roll
or up-side-down finger-roll or 3-inch outlet pass into the hoop.
i dont understand why people are criticizing howard's superman throwdown so much. . . if it's better than dunking it, why isnt there any reason not to consider it?

But isn't the #1 rule of the Slam Dunk Contest that you have to "Slam Dunk" the ball?

Regardless, it looked cool and people loved it and that's "really" what the Slam Dunk Contest is about right? Well that, and dunking. . .

throwing it into the hoop is far more difficult than dunking it from where he took off.

So is hitting a three pointer or doing calculus or making that cupcake that Gerald Green dunked on.

You know if Mutombo was a cupcake it would not have gone down like that.

one of the better dunk contests in a long time. its getting harder now to get original.

I agree. Also, I personally don't think the fact that Howard didn't actually dunk the ball is a big deal. Everyone loved it and putting D. Howard on that stage is, IMO, good for the NBA because of how disarming and accessible he is for one of the 3-5 best players in the league.

I was mostly responding to your "I don't know why" with some possible "whys".

American Heritage Dictionary

But isn't the #1 rule of the Slam Dunk Contest that you have to "Slam Dunk" the ball?

I'd say it was a dunk. I mean, the only difference from the usual dunk was that he didn't touch the rim. It was a forceful spike down into the basket, which I'd consider a dunk no matter where somebody does it from... free-throw line, 3-point line, half court, etc...

And besides, I looked around and I haven't actually found a definition of a dunk to require somebody to touch the rim...

From dictionary.com's AHD entry:

dunk shot
n.   Basketball
A shot made by jumping and slamming the ball down through the basket. Also called stuff shot.

by beetea on Feb 17, 2008 12:20 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Nice! I got Webstered!
That's a legitimate argument. Although I would argue that 99% of people (that didn't look it up) would describe a dunk to you as including touching the rim. Regardless, i should have looked it up. My bad.

Like I said in my response, I'm just giving you possible "whys". It doesn't mean they were legitimate "whys".

I do actually agree that that was a great contest and, regardless of technical definition, complaining about the legitimacy of Howard's "dunk" is silly. It was a good moment for the NBA. All positive vibes (except from Green).

My statement about Mutomobo and the cupcake stand though. I am unwavering on that.

Dwight Howard's performance was golden!
First off... here is the definition of a SLAM DUNK!

Slam Dunk (per wikipedia):

A slam dunk (or simply a dunk) is a type of basketball shot that is performed when a player jumps in the air and manually powers the ball downward through the basket with one or both of his hands.

Slam Dunk (per dictionary.com; in two parts:
Dunk:

To slam a ball through the basket from above.

Slam Dunk:
A particularly forceful, often dramatic dunk shot.

The Superman dunk definately fits into this category... how could it not?

Dwight Howard dished out two original dunks and two classics with a twist.  He definitely deserved to win!  I just wished that Moon would have been in the finals instead of Gerald Green.

MISSION ACCOMPLISHED!

that was
crazy! the only dunk that i can think beat that is if he did his first dunk but did it between the legs, be like the j rich dunk but behind the backboard now that would be the craziest dunk ever!
What you thought that I only played basketball? I AM A Golden State WARRIOR!

i still wish
Someone should have thrown down a 540 dunk or a 360 between the legs in the competition. I mean damn, if someone from and1 can do it, why can't an nba player?? I think jrich was the only one that has ever attempted the 360 between the legs.

I thought this year's dunk contest was pure greatness. Don't understand how people didn't see the creativity this year.

J-Rich
Anyone else remember the dunks he attmepted in th '04 contest? The lob, catch, 360, between the legs. And the lob, catch, maybe a 360(Can't remember clearly), and arm in rim ala Vince Carter. If he had been able to throw those down, I honestly believe that performance would surpass VC's performance as best all time. Also, it would've made him first player ever to win three contests, not to mention all back to back to back. Damn, I really wish he were able to complete those dunks.

The "superman" Was Not A Dunk
All-

He came up short. He did not dunk the ball. So...it was not a dunk, He threw it from 3 feet away. While it looked great it wWAS NOT A DUNK AND SHOULD HAVE COST HIM THE DUNK CONTEST!!!!!!!!

by Mully from deep on Feb 18, 2008 3:13 AM PST reply actions   0 recs

You know...
even if it was ruled to not be a dunk, he would still have about a minute to get another dunk in. And he probably still would have won (although it wouldn't have been nearly as spectacular as throwing the ball in with such force).
