Andris out for at least a week - appendicitis

sfgate.com blog by Janny Hu

Some bad news from practice today:

As the trade deadline passed at noon, the biggest story for the Warriors wasn't that Mickael Pietrus was still at practice.

It's that Andris Biedrins was not.

The Warriors' starting center is out indefinitely with appendicitis that began flaring up last night. Biedrins is scheduled to have his appendix removed today and will likely out for at least a week as he recovers from surgery. Suns forward Grant Hill missed 11 days after undergoing his own appendectomy on Jan. 10.

Warriors coach Don Nelson said Biedrins wasn't feeling well during Wednesday's win over the Celtics, though Biedrins still toughed out one of his best games of the season with 21 points and 13 rebounds. He got progressively worse overnight before the Warriors' sent him to the doctor Thursday morning.

This will definately hurt the team's chance of making the playoffs.  Guess PoB will get a chance to step up and prove himself.

you beat me to it
I just read this a posted a diary about this too... bad news for the W's.  Maybe POB gets the minutes, but this could also be a chance for Wright to get some PT.  Let's just hope Webber doesn't get all the minutes.

noooooooooooo
Not right at the the trade deadline! Mullin probably didn't have enough time to put together a trade. POB show us what you got!

by racsan on Feb 21, 2008 12:54 PM PST reply actions

idk
at least its not an extremity issue

i think this is going to be projected longer than it actually will be, these sort can turn around if he just starts feeling better

i think nelson is saying that to help beids and reinforce that hes the future and nellie will give him whatever he needs to take; meaning theyre probably overshooting how long it will take to bring him back

i think the way theyre handling this will do something good for bieds confidence and comfort with the team, it sets a tone, and it encourages him to coem back tenaciously whenever he feels ready

WOW
Biedrins was a beast last night regardless. This shows even more what type of player he is. Going against one of the best big men of all time too.

So
who will probably get his minutes? Web/Al? Does BWright stand any chances of getting some burn?

by DouR on Feb 21, 2008 12:58 PM PST reply actions

according to the blog
Nelson said Webber and Croshere will see more time at the 5 with a possibility of POB and BWright getting some minutes.

Chris Webber better start hitting that treadmill.

WAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!
Say this isn't true!!! When is Jackson expected to be back???? Is the injury bug finally coming back to haunt us? I'm still waiting for when Baron will go down. I hope POB can shine! This will be his big chance.
Where the !@#$ are you now, Billy Owens????

wow
title is misleading.

Suns forward Grant Hill missed 11 days after undergoing his own appendectomy on Jan. 10.

Grant Hill is old. Andris is young how can he be out longer than Grant Hill.

by saintdee on Feb 21, 2008 12:59 PM PST reply actions

NOOOOO!!!!
This is bad news... I don't see Webber as the best substitute for Biedrins.  This...Just...Sucks. I wish Biedrins a quick recovery, because EVERYONE will be missing him. Hopefully, Nellie lights a fire under POB'S ass and gets him to play with some tenacious effort in place of Biedrins. And maybe BWright will really get some more PT now too. Let's just hope the Dubs don't fall outta the playoff picture because of this. Such a great season in the making so far!!!
SHOOT THE J! SHOOT IT!

noooooooooooooooooo
our playoff chances got cut in half in a flash. unless somebody like BWright, POB, or webber can really step up, we've got ourselves a big time hole. i hope baron and monta don't go down and that jackson comes back faster than i can type this post.

BAHAMA TRAPEZOID
Maybe the other guys should get an inflamed appendix if it means lines like 21 and 13. Appendicitis -- it's the new NBA flu!

hey
don't worry, this is a good thing. mark my words, pob and wright are going to step up and suprise us.

by bigbenny11 on Feb 21, 2008 1:17 PM PST reply actions

no big deal
we'll survive.

His playing time has plummeted 33% in the last 5 games, and we're 4-1.  The game he did get his average minutes per game?  Last night.  Short term, this is a good thing.  Throw the other bigs into the fire.

At least our schedule isn't that tough
until March 13th when we play phoenix. And we all know how the Warriors love that underdog status.

by GOLDENstateGIRL on Feb 21, 2008 1:26 PM PST reply actions

I am on the minority
while it could potentially hurt the team -- the very high possibility that Nellie limits the floor time between Webber/Harrington/Croshere, even on times where two or all of them or unproductive -- it can also be a golden opportunity for Brandan Wright or POB. I disagree with Nellie's comments that his veterans are the one to take them to the playoffs. He needs his veterans to lead, but he needs a full productive bench behind them. Just take a look at the Lakers, they have a young productive bench that is one of the best in the NBA right now.

by lightz0ut on Feb 21, 2008 1:30 PM PST reply actions

Yea
There's no way Nellie can tell me that Wright or POB won't give you an ounce of production throughout the course of the game. It is justified to not play them late in games, but to have them ride the pine while schmucks like Webber, Cro and Barnes continuously get pt is ridiculous as well as the starters logging too many minutes.

by kenntoe on Feb 21, 2008 1:39 PM PST up reply actions

I wouldn't be totally surprised
if Nelson tries POB on Friday , gets pissed off at him after 3 minutes and sits him for the next 3 weeks. Then proceeds to ride Harrington into the ground.

by bloodsweatndonuts on Feb 21, 2008 9:12 PM PST up reply actions

We'll be fine
We have games against Atlanta, Seattle, & Sixers, all extremly winnable games.  So if he's only out for a week and a few days he'll only miss 3 games.  A bonus is that we'll actually might see some of the other young bigs, except for the fact that Nelson is a total tool and probably will only give minutes to Webber, Croshere, and Harington.  Let's just hope he'll give some burn to Wright, I think they want to hid O'bryant as much as possible so he probably won't see any PT.
It's all about the killer cross-over baby!

by warriorsfiend on Feb 21, 2008 1:39 PM PST reply actions

What scares me is that
games against these types of teams are the ones where the Dubs usually let their guard down and play sloppy.  But let's see if the young players can step up.

by IamJK603 on Feb 21, 2008 1:44 PM PST up reply actions

Good thing is
that our next 5 games are against Atlanta, Seattle, Philadelphia, Portland and @ Atlanta.  Although we'll be goin' up against Horford and Alrdige in the next 5 games, the competition could be a lot worse.  All 5 games are games we still can win, with the chance of playing time for B. Wright and POB.

damn
get well soon big fella. this makes his performance last night even more impressive

by AJC3317 on Feb 21, 2008 1:44 PM PST reply actions

I Believe
Hey Guys,

Lets lighten up, remember last year when nelson solidifed the second half of the season with a small line-up, of Baron, J-Rich, Jack, AL, and Monta. I have a feeling our guys will step-up, Wright will finally get to play, for his size and rebounding.

Keep the faith guys, like Tim Roye said last night, "Do you Believe in the Warriors now!?"

It's startling how so many people watch basketball, yet so few actually play it.

by 3 The Hard Way on Feb 21, 2008 1:45 PM PST reply actions

Damn!
I liked how we came out with Biedrins and Webber on the floor together. It made Webber a little more productive. Now I hope, like most of you, this doesn't become a four man rotation up top with Cro, Webb, Al, and Barnes. Especially with the teams we have coming up it is time to see what POB and Wright can give us. At least one of them should step up and show Nelson they can play and contribute.
And I know this is off topic, but watching Barnes play lately I'm convinced that he should never be played in the 4th qtr. His style of play is a little too erratic for crunch time when every possesion and shot count.

by tangel29 on Feb 21, 2008 2:03 PM PST reply actions

Blessing in desguise!
Can you say Brandan Wright!  Please play the fricken kid already!!!  POB wouldn't hurt either!!!  Andris will be back-no worries!  His Super Hold #10 LA Looks Hair Gel will help his healing.

by gabezgsw on Feb 21, 2008 2:04 PM PST reply actions

appendicitis
Anyone knows if the appendix ruptured or not? That will make a difference on the recovery period. If it didn't rupture, you can get out of hospital in about 3 days, but it might be as long as a week if it did rupture.
Where the !@#$ are you now, Billy Owens????

by Manute4Three on Feb 21, 2008 3:08 PM PST reply actions

NO BEADS!
He will be surely missed.  But yes, this will give POB and Wright some more PT. Hopefully both of them will gain something out of Andris' break. Lets hope he comes back fully rested and unimpaired.

its not that bad
its not like the dubs will be playing the powerhouses while he's gone. they play the hawks, sonics and sixers next week (all at home). if they won without jack last night against the celtics they can do without beans for 3 games against the weaker teams in the nba.

by boomdizzle5 on Feb 21, 2008 3:46 PM PST reply actions

asdf
why is everyone so upset at chris webber getting minutes? sure, at times he looks a bit shaky but he has something that no one else on the team has as much as him. experience. i would rather have the ball in webber's hands at the end of the game opposed to biedrins.

hm
yeah it sucks, but this is not the worst thing in that world that can happen.

we got a real easy schedule coming up.

I don't think Chris Webber is physically capable of taking on more minutes at this point, therefore most people here on GSOM (including myself) will get their wishes granted this week: POB, Croshere, and Wright should all get a nice increased in playing time.  The young guys now have a golden opportunity to earn Nellie's trust.  If they play well and Nellie starts trusting them, we could possibly have a nice, deep, productive frontcourt down the stretch.

Another perk of the situation: Mullin gets to have a full-on evaluation of what our team is like playing without Biedrins.  This will be a great opportunity to fully gauge Biedrins' worth on this team, and hopefully give us a good idea what he should be asking from us when his contract extension comes up in the offseason.  If the Warriors can play well during this stretch, then maybe we can use it as leverage to get Biedrins to sign cheaper than the widely-believed $10mil/yr contract.  And if we play horribly without Biedrins?  Then we'll know for sure that he's fully worth what he gets from us.
