Idea/Speculation: Brent Barry

Yahoo Sports had an article about how the West is 9 deep with playoff worthy/deserving teams, and all the trading hooplah going on between them. Johnny Ludden, the writer of the artcle, mentions the recent trade between the Spurs and Sonics, and makes a speculation involving our very own Dubs.

The trade could have further implications for the conference. The Sonics are expected to waive Barry, possibly freeing the sharp-shooting guard to sign with a rival like Golden State or Phoenix once his calf injury heals.

Yeah, it's only a speculation. Not a rumor in any way, but it got me to thinking of the possibility of the Dubs signing him. Sure he's old, way past his prime, and he'll not only take up cap space, but would also take away minutes from other wing players such as Buike and Pietrus, but he could also bring in a CONSISTENT three point shot, a veteran leadership, and maybe a little of this.....

The Warriors already have 15 spots taken up, so I don't know how this could work, but any thoughts?

BARRY

KostaCoast = Expendable before Biedrins Ilness.

Now i'm not so sure.

With the trowback flavor of c-webb's return, I'd be down to see the spawn of #24 bring back the granny free throws!

Even with Latvia being out
Nellie most likely won't play him. So I think he IS expendable. Not to mention the fact that I'd much rather see Braceface, POB, and Webber get any minutes before Kosta does.

asdf
Dude they aren't going to cut Kosta, even though he doesn't play they just signed him last summer for 3years/5million, they aren't going to eat that money for the sake of signing Brent Barry.

DREW Barry
Gosh I dunno where I came up with Ron. I meant Drew, he signed a couple of 10 day contracts with us.

hmm...
I've seen Barry in Hermosa Beach quite a bit during the off-season.  I bet he signs with the Lakers.  I wouldn't really want him anyways...

by warriorfan4eva on Feb 21, 2008 10:28 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

ill take him
can play some point and be the one guard with legit, consistant 3 pt range.  since nellie would be more comfortable giving him minutes why not cut watson?  (i like watson, but nellie obviously wont play him down the stretch so why not bring in someone he will?)  i also think he probably ends up with LA though.
passes it to the man...and boom goes the dynamite!

He'll Get A Buy-Out
... and end up back with the Spurs.

Lol
Unless he pulls off a Stackhouse, which is actually already too late since the trade is already completed, so I don't know why I even said that. Sigh* I'll stop talkig now.

Do it.
If he is willing to come here, I say go for it. He is obviously not the player he used to be, but he would instantly be the best shooter on the team and he can pass the ball well. Defense would be an issue... on second thought he is probably almost as good as Monta or Buke (although those two have the talent/athleticism to be much better defenders).

I doubt he would choose to come here if LA or PHX make him an offer, but it is worth a try.

Also if it's true that we couldn't even get a mid second rounder for POB's expiring contract I would have no problem cutting him outright to make room for a player Nellie would actually use like Barry or PJ.

umm
I'm probably in favor of bringing in more veterans as much as anyone else here, but this is a bit of a stretch.  36 year old Brent Barry with a torn calf muscle?

I guess he'd still be a better option than hometown slice Gary Payton, who I'm still secretly clamoring for.  Barry can still shoot the lights out for an old man, I'm surprised the Spurs let him go.

by jlagace on Feb 22, 2008 12:02 AM PST reply actions   0 recs

If we can get Barry for cheap
I'd take him solely for his 3 point shooting. That's really all we'd need from him for about 10 minutes a game. We wouldn't need him to do much running. Just need him to get some burn when our offense gets stagnant and when Baron, Jack, and Monta need some rest. I'm pretty sure his 36 year old legs can handle that, assuming his calf injury heals.

expendable
they have Finley, Udoka and Stoudamire playing better than him and he's expiring. In return, they get a big man who is more use than him

A little of topic: Suns is only 7 deep!
Wow! Just realized that although the Suns have a very formidable starting lineup. They are only 7 deeps with DJ Strawberry being the 8th guy for them.

And yet, the Warriors continue to cut their bench short. The Suns would probably love to have the likes of B.Wright, Buike, Watson, even Belinelli coming off the bench for them. And I bet they see regular playing time too.

by lightz0ut on Feb 22, 2008 1:13 AM PST reply actions   0 recs

forgot to add...
if we only utilize our bench more, we wouldn't even have this discussion about Brent Barry. (well, unless they end up sucking...lol).

by lightz0ut on Feb 22, 2008 1:14 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

hmm
i dont know, he can still shoot, though it looks weird. but he is to old but hes been through alot. and how great would it be having a barry again, and the best white dunker in dunk contest history, well not really but hey he won it!

i'd do it
if for no other reason than we'd finally have a consistant shooter

by AJC3317 on Feb 22, 2008 1:47 AM PST reply actions   0 recs

Might be...
...worth a look. We have scant few true three point shooters. We have ballsy ones who can get hot, but Baron and Jack are nevertheless below average percentage shooters.

That said, I don't know where the spot comes from unless we're planning to cut ties with somebody.

by Zack Vank on Feb 22, 2008 3:02 AM PST reply actions   0 recs

We already have a better option....
The Italian guy that usually sits behind the bench in a suit would be a better option. Problem is Nelli, for some reason or another, doesn't like players that don't have at least 3-4 years experience.
All this talk of getting PJ Brown or Brent Barry would be frivilous if Nelli would JUST PLAY POB, WRIGHT AND BELLINELLI! When does he expect them to gain the confidence to contribute if their only extensive playing time is during Garbage time.
We don't need another broken down vet to try and get us to the playoffs. Its time to use the young guys so they can start building their NBA resumes.

by tangel29 on Feb 22, 2008 5:35 AM PST reply actions   0 recs

I agree completely, but...
...it ain't gonna happen. Nelson absolutely positively will not give Belinelli, Wright, or O'Bryant one losuy damn minute of meaningful basketball, except when he feels like being overly cute (the Brandan Wright four minute start vs. NO). Therefore, it's probably worth picking up a cheap vet with a similar skill set to help us out on a one-year basis. I have no doubt Keith Smart will get the young'uns involved when he takes over, be that next year or the year after.

by Zack Vank on Feb 22, 2008 6:19 AM PST reply actions   0 recs

do it
There's no way CJ Watson is going to play any relevant minutes the rest of this season, so I'm down for waiving him if Barry wants to come to the Bay for the rest of the year.  Is his dad still in town?  Maybe that will help.  CJ is probably the most expendable guy on the roster.
