Favorite Former Warriors who never reached potential

Hey guys who is your favorite former W's player that never reached their potential or level of their athleticism??? Or maybe better yet your favorite moment from that player?

I was thinking along the lines of:

Chris Porter, Vonteego Cummings, Rodney White, Ike Diogu, Mike Dunleavy, Billy Owens, Jiri Welsch, Marc Jackson....

This FanPost is a submission from a member of the mighty Golden State of Mind community. While we're all here to throw up that W, these words do not necessarily reflect the views of the GSoM Crew. Still, chances are the preceding post is Unstoppable Baby!

I was actually a big Dunleavy fan
Back in his rookie year, when he was rocking the #10 jersey. Mostly cause I got to meet him and I got his autograph. Then, well, you know how he turned out.

So many to choose from.
The Warriors have had no shortage of players that never reached their potential. If I had to choose one it would probably be Zarko. He would fit in so well with this current team, It's too bad that he was hampered by injuries his entire career.

Chris Porter was also exciting to watch. I would also add Ike Diogu to this group. He is such a skilled player but it just doesn't seem like he has the basketball IQ to really learn a teams offense and defense. His entire time with the Dubs he never knew where he was supposed to be on the court, but if you got him the ball in one of his favorite spots he was a pretty tough cover.

Totally agree
on Zarko. I had high hopes that he would become a fixture in Nellie's system. His game seemed to fit the run and gun style, and he had some phenomenal games in his first year. Guess he just couldn't get healthy.

Yep
I followed Dunleavy through college at Duke, then was content when the W's drafted him in the 2002 draft. I remember that #10 jersey well, it looked like a sign of hope for what was to come. I mean we had Gilbert Uranus, J-Rich, Jamison, Smurphy, Boykins all in their primes with Mike waiting on the wings. That was the 02-03 season, when Mussleman won 38 games, we were in playoff contention for the first time in years, it was all looking up. The scoring was abundant, defense was scarce, but the W's were young, then of course as we all know things came apart, Mussleman was exiled quickly, Montgomery came and went, then now we are back w/ Nellie. I just wish Mike had worked out like he was supposed to as our SF 3 point shooter with excellent passing skills and defense, oh but what could have been...

Mine is Porter

Chris Porter is my favorite one,

I thought he was going to be a good player, had a good build to him and could excite the crowd with some crazy dunks and the Fro!!! I was very disappointed when the W's traded and his career fizzled out after that run in with the law if I recall.

Ike Diogu would be my second choice he had the size and ability to help us out underneath. On paper he is the guy who kills the W's on the block that teams like Utah, San Antonio, and Dallas possess. (Brandon Bass, Paul Millsap, etc)

He just never had the work ethic nor ability to adjust to Nellie's system and is thus a bust, what a shame...

I say.....
Chris Porter, dood got some hops and he could some D. Too bad his off-court trouble cost him his career.

Byron Houston
I think he came in the same year as Sprewell and comparisons were made to Barkley in terms of body and strength.  I have a vague memory of him blocking Shaq's dunk too.
I pray i never have to use a gun again.

dunno if fuller really had any potential but I remember him making a jump shot in his first attempt in his first game and I was hyped.

little did we know that it would be all downhill from there.

I actually thought Andrew Declercq would amount to something.

Smith
Some people forget that Joe Smith really didn't start off too bad. I thinks that after Webber left we were all wanting so much more.

And his rookie stats would probably make him rookie of the year this year.

Mine is also Rozier
I remember he wasn't really doing much in his rookie year and then they played a game against the Spurs where Rodman had I believe 15 rebounds in the third quarter alone.  Rozier said that game motivated him and he was a rebounding beast for the remainder of the season.  I went to a Rockets game where he had 21 rebounds against Olajuwon and then later had 19 boards against Mutumbo.  I thought he was going to be a beast for us.

However, he had a horrible attitude that I think was going to doom him.  Also, I guess that offseason his girlfriend got him on a vegetarian diet and he lost like 20-30 lbs, so when he shows up for training camp weighing around 220, the coaching staff was like, "What?!".

I remember hearing about how he and Todd Fuller were having 'spirited' practices against each other.  Yeah, I'm sure that was a sight to behold. ;)

My first ever Warriors game was a 4 OT victory against the Nets in 1987.

hahaha exactly!!!  That dude looked sick when he dunked...I don't know but I liked how he played even though he wasn't very productive...it was kind of like watching Larry Hughes..."at least they look nice loosing!"

Chris Wasburn
No. 3 pick in the 1986 draft.  Not a "favorite" of mine, really, but perhaps the biggest disappointment.

Tony Delk
was one of my favorite players and has been one of very few pure shooters the Warriors have had since Chris Mullin. (Anthony Roberson very briefly being the other?  Can anyone think of any other PURE shooters on the Warriors since Mullin?.)  There aren't too many guys in NBA history that have a 50 point game on their NBA resume (53 points against the Kings in 2001) and have an NBA career average of just 9 points per game.  (Although Tracy Murray has a career average of 9 poins per game also and dropped 50 on the Warriors back in 1998.  I remember that game!)

oh danny boy.
they did have mark price. he was a pure shooter..
past prime once he landed on dubs though..

i always thought fortson would put the team over the hump to get into playoffs. was a beast on the glass and inside. he was an enforcer. then he just left and never matched what he did when he first arrived in oaktown. gave us a glimpse of his potential and then never got back to it..

Zarko Chabarkaba
Or however you spell his name.  Zarko was a player that could rebound, throw out an outlet pass and before you knew it got the trailer pass to him for a lay up or dunk.  Pretty damn good for a guy who was 6'10-6'11.  He could also pull down a board and take it coast to coast for a lay up or dunk too.  His mid range jump shot was solid and he had that ability to alter the flow of who he was guarding and could disrupt the other teams rhythm.

Zarko is a perfect type of player for Nellie.  Tall, long, can disrupt passing lanes, pass the ball well, had an okay shot, could pull boards, and run on the fast break.  Too bad the guy had back problems that destroyed his career.  Easily the biggest letdown of potential players.

Next would hands down be Joe Smith!

Bearcats
Not Nick Van Exel but...Steve Logan.  Whatever happened with that whole situation.  Never played a day in a GS uniform.

He was also a player in college on a nice squad.  I guess he was never able to stay healthy.

Joe Smith
I agree with bol Joe Smith was the #1 overall pick and he was a huge disappointment. What makes it worse is he is really playing well these days and we could actually use his size now.

Chris Gatling
Chris Gatling had a pretty good career, but I really thought he had the potential to be better.  Same with Donyell Marshall -- in the beginning of his career, Donyell's athleticism was absolutely remarkable.  I don't mean to take anything away from either of these guys, but as a W's fan they were the two I would constantly find myself frustrated with, thinking 'you can be so much better!'

Word to Steve Logan -- I thought at the time that he would be another Arenas-type 2nd round steal.  If I remember correctly, he played overseas or possibly in the D-League, and never appeared in a Warriors game.  Too bad.

Let Baron Go...
He's declining and Monta is on the rise. We need a BIG to compete in the west. Mississippi is the new face of the franchise. I would like to see Mullin use that money to pick up a true power forward to compliment Biedrins. And there are a few available this offseason. Who would you like to see the Warriors pursue? Brand, O'Neal, Marion, Jamison?

Nellie's prototypical PF:

-Big body who can run the floor
-Definite presence on defense
-Has to have a mid-range jumper

My pick: JERMAINE O'NEAL

I can't see him disrupting our chemistry which is very important for our team's success. O'neal, Jackson, and Ellis will lead us the ship.

My Dream Team:

PG Ellis - GP

SG Jackson - Belinelli

SF Harrington - Azubuike

PF O'Neal - Wright

C  Biedrins - Perovic

by gambinofam on Feb 24, 2008 2:47 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

i disagree
Baron can be a really good player for a few more years.  Possibly 3-5.  Im not saying we should keep him for that long, but this team you proposed isn't a contender.  O'neal is declining much faster than Baron.  I agree that monta could be our man and could be the face of this franchise at point guard I've thought he was capable of being a point for a while now, just none of those players proposed jump out at me as turning this current team (minus Baron) into a contender.  I think we need another 6-7, 6-8 athletic talented, top notch swingman, we really only have jackson, as well as a big man like the ones you proposed.

I think that Monta, Wright and Biedrins are the future, throw in Bellinelli, pick up another swing man, Jack will be good for a while as well, i think we'll be good.

by travisl212 on Feb 24, 2008 3:01 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

i
was actaully kind of contemplating that as well, but not on a very serious level. we could get someone really good since baron is still in his prime...but baron is the heart of the franchise and letting him go would be disheartening to the franchise and team as well.

however, i disagree with you that we should get "jermaine o neal". he is injury prone and is probably gonna last just as long as baron would. hypothetically, if we were to get rid of baron i say we go for a "big man" PF that is YOUNG. maybe a lottery draft pick to accompany monta, biedrins, bwright and belinelli. in a few years, when all the stars in the west will be gone wed be unstoppable!

I don't see...
...how that relates to the diary topic, but your dream team seems to have Gary Payton on it. I don't mean to alarm you, but if this goes untreated, it may become terminal team cancer in a few years.

by Zack Vank on Feb 24, 2008 3:23 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

By GP
I think he must mean "CP" (3).

And by "Jermaine O'Neal" I think he means "LeBron James," or possibly "Dwight Howard."

You know, since, generally speaking, a "dream team" is not significantly worse than the team you already have.

On topic: Carlos Rogers. When we drafted him, old raspy-voiced talkshow host Scott Ferrell made him sound like Rasheed Wallace #1B. I could barely sleep nights: Rogers and Rozier were going to complement Webber and Owens to form the frontcourt of doom, while Spree, Hardaway and Mullin continued to do their thing. I figured at least two or three NBA championships were in our near future...

to make a "quality" post such as this once every couple of weeks.

yes why don't they dump the most talented player on the team, convert ellis to the position that he proved to be terrible at and get o'niel, who is definitely headed on the way down. why aren't you the GM?

I never understood why..
the Warriors traded David Vaughn for Jason Caffey.  Vaughn was playing so well and fitting in perfectly and then was sent off to Chicago for a mediocre Caffey.  I would also get really excited every time Carlos Rogers would set foot on the court.

by JimBarnett2KevinGarnett on Feb 24, 2008 3:33 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

actually we could use Caffey...
off the bench. to me, the Warriors' mistake with him was trying to make him a frontline starter...
I remember going to a game and seeing him playing a very solid game when we first acquired him, even though a young rookie by the name of Tim Duncan dropped 31 on us, we still won the game!

But he was a player who gave an excellent 20+ minutes of rebounding, defense and inside scoring. It's that other 10+ minutes that made him out to be a lameass IMO.

Carlos Rogers and Clifford Rozier
Carlos Rogers was all hype and Clifford Rozier ended up being all about undersized production.  The pre-game warmups is where Carlos Rogers shined with his above the rim alley-oops which were really nice to watch, but Clifford Rozier did well for an undersized 4 and surprisingly got a lot of boards.

Every Warrior who failed to win a championship!
Just about every player we have ever had has looked good at some point and they pretty much all disappointed me.

#1 - Sprewell was awesome, then lost his mind and choked the damn coach.  I think if that had not happened we would have had a very different team for a few more years. Maybe a deep playoff run.

#2 - Dampier.  Never has a person so strong and tall missed so many layups. I wanted to pull my hair out every time he got the ball in the key.

#3 - Billy Owens. He didnt amount to squat and dont forget we gave up Mitch Richmond for him. Can you believe what we got in return for Mitch F'ing Richmond?!

#4 - J Rich - I am right there with previous poster who was disappointed with his handles and hoops IQ.  JRICH never got down the floor and established good position so he could get a good shot. It was either a 20 footer or a dunk with him.  He should have made a living with the style Monta is playing.

I might make JRich my #1 now that I think of it. Imagine a team where JRich played like Monta for 5 years, then here comes Monta Ellis.  We have a mature offensive threat and the fastest offensive threat in the game getting better all the time. No one would know how to play defense against us.

Good call....take a look at his production on NBS.com's historical stats page.

His production went way down when he came here then shot back up when he moved to Orlando.

I remember not knowing anything about him before he came here and being agitated when he improved at Orlando.  I had no idea what a dog he was for his two years here.

BOBBY SURA!!!
I can't believe no one mentioned Bobby Sura! He had a solid '01-02 season for the Warriors, but he never really reached his potential.

His best 1/3 season was probably in '03-04 for Atlanta. Remember when he almost got 3 straight triple-doubles? Anyway, Atlanta gave him the ball and let him be free, and he really excelled for them.

Sura had good size (6'5, 200), was a top notch athlete, a gifted passer, and a solid defender. His downfalls (besides the injuries) were his poor outside shot and his tendency to try and do too much.

When my friend asked me about Sura a long time ago, I said: "He's good, but he think he's Michael Jordan. He tries to make plays that few players can make, usually with a bad result."

If he just worked on his outside shot and played a more cerebral game, his career could have turned out much nicer. I like the guy, but he never reached his full potential.

I also agree with Carlos Rogers, but you people saying Joe Smith are ridiculous. Sure, he didn't live up to your expectations of a #1 pick, but that's not his fault. His upside wasn't that high to begin with, and his career reflects that.
