Us and The Nuggets

So its becoming more increasingly obvious as the season dwindles down that the last spot in the playoffs is between 2 teams: Dubbs and Nuggs. With Houston's surge and Portland's demise its between us dos to have a makeout battle for the 8th and final spot.

Those top 7 spots seem untouchable. Some teams (Dallas, PHX, NO) have the potential to slip down to our territory but they have loads of talent to ensure they will not fall down under. It seems like even if the Dubbs win 10 in a row we still might be #8. Everybody here knows about the Dubbs, but what do we know about the Nuggs this year?

Star-divide

  1. Carmelo is pissed because they didn't get any help (no Ron Ron 2.0, no Mike Miller).
  2. Their defense may possibly be worse than ours. (Over the past month, they have held only one opponent under 100 points)
  3. Injuries are piling. (Chucky Atkins, Nene, K Mart have all missed significant time).
  4. More Road Games than Home Games. Currently 11-16 on the road. (14 of their last 26 games on the road).
  5. Tough upcoming schedule. (They play PHX 3 times, Spurs 2X, Jazz 2X, Rockets 2X, Pistons 2X and Dubbs 2X).
Not to mention between March 2 - March 10 they play in a row: Rockets, Suns, Spurs, Jazz and Spurs. (0-5?) Would be nice.

Well, hopefully that should make us feel better about our playoff chances. So we have to root for Denver to lose because it is the same as a Dubbs win.

Any other reasons to give us more hope?

they pay so much for their team yet they're barely in the playoffs.. i feel bad for their owner.

You couldn't be more wrong
There's still 25+ games left in the season and that's a long enough time for seeds 1-7 to stink themselves out of the playoffs and for teams like Portland to go on another winning streak and find themselves back in playoff contention. Not to mention, the Dubs also have a tough stretch the last 2 weeks of the regular season.

Point is, the playoff seedings are hardly set at all unlike what you say. It's not simply between the Warriors and the Nuggets. Anything thing can happen with 25+ games left in the Wild Wild West.

of course anything can happen,
but this is the way things are shaping up.  he even left the door open by saying that yes it is possible that a team like portland rises back up or one of the top teams falling.  But both of those are pretty unlikely

all it takes
is a major injury and even the first seed can miss the playoffs.

with that said, besides us and the nuggets, dallas is very vulnerable and im still not sold on the Rockettes although they won 100 in a row, something tells me, MeMac will break something in his porcelain body.

Check too
the schedule of NO. For me they have the toughest skeds among the top tiers and chances are they will slid down. There is no problems with their starters, but the wear and tear of 54 games seems to catch up with them. In their last two games where they lost to Houston and San Antonio, their fluid offense anchored on West and Chandler is being checked by opteams. Their problems with their bench is becoming obvious that unless corrective measures will be addressed to, they might missed the play-off.

Hornets
dropped again another game to undermanned Wizards. A buzzer beater 3 pointer by Stevenson broke the 92 deadlock and won the game for the Wizards 95-92. Next two games for them will be Suns and Utah.

West may be Bimodal
But the East just sucks.  Sure BOS, DET, CLE, ORL don't suck as much, but if they played in the West, they'd be stuck in the pack.  They get to play the Miamis, the Charlottes, etc. an extra time or two.

by Dubs fan in Boston on Feb 26, 2008 6:19 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

asdf
The Dubs also have a very formidable schedule as well. Out of the final 27 games...

12@home - 8 vs. teams currently in the playoffs
Philly
Portland x2
Toronto
Houston
Lakers
Dallas
Denver

15@away - 9 vs. teams currently in the playoffs
Atlanta
Orlando
Phoenix x2
Lakers
Denver
San Antonio
Dallas
New Orleans

I know Denver and Portland aren't currently in the playoffs but I've added them to the list because they are both playoff caliber teams. Also Philly, currently 8th and ATL (9th) both have losing records but both right on the fringe of the playoffs so I've added them in as well.

I don't know about you but that's 17 of the final 27 against playoff caliber teams, mostly WC teams, which is huge. We're going to control our own destiny with the schedule but looking at it makes it seem all that much harder.

Portland
isn't in the playoffs, but they might as well be because the Warriors have been dominated by Portland this year. Portland, Utah, and Detroit have dominated us the most, but luckily both Portland games were on the road.

I dunno...
half the league makes the playoffs so 17/27 isn't that crazy. Especially when you're being liberal with these "playoff" teams counting Denver, Atlanta, and Portland.  A remaining strength of schedule comparison would work better. The worst thing I see there is that we have to play the Lakers two more times (I think it's a h/a back-to-back too)

this battle is between 2 through 9
Is everyone forgetting that the top 9 spots are seperated by 5 games....5 GAMES. Anything can happen. ANYTHING.

But these will be for certain:

The Lakers will have the number 1 spot, Kobe + Gasol + Odom = Lamar Odom is your 3rd possibly 4th best player when Bynum comes back. Esh.

Sacramento will be the best club under .500 for not much longer.

Brandan Wright will average 6 pts, 7 rebs and 54% shooting for the rest of the season.

Count it.

by Squall on Feb 25, 2008 8:07 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

probably (barring a kobe injury)
especially considering they have the most home games , 16 (to 10 road), out of the remaining playoff contenders.

that's why it's important for the dubs to not be in that 8th spot since the lakers were already killing the dubs before gasol.

plus, barring an epic collapse, as a division winner, utah will be in the 4th spot and since the NBA doesn't reseed, they'd be next in line to face the winner of 1 vs 8.

hopefully either the rockets come back to earth or the hornets continue to slide.

w/ all the moves, right now it's hard to tell who the w's match up best against, but it's pretty much a given utah and the lakers own them.

by the evil monkey on Feb 25, 2008 11:31 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

funny thing is
that i could easily see utah finishing the year with a 16-10 record to finish with 52 wins and having the 7th best record in the west.

my projections for total wins for playoff teams at end of year"

  1. LAL - 57
  2. SA - 55
  3. HOU - 55
  4. NO - 53
  5. DAL - 53
  6. PHO - 52
  7. UT - 52
  8. GSW - 51
this means the Warriors have to finish the year 18-9.  very tough w/the schedule they have remaining, but doable if we're healthy enough.

98-93 Pistons
Nuggets continue the slide. Hard to imagine with AI, Melo, and Camby on the roster that they'd be such big underachievers.

Pistons did us a favor
Nuggets got the home court calls (25 fouls for DET to 14 for DEN) to try and force them to victory (.36 shooting) but DET came in the clutch. I was "watching" the game on Yahoo sports, basically hitting refresh every 5 seconds. That's good, since we got swept by the Pistons.

did anybody watch friday's game?
I was there and damn was I disappointed. No defense played whatsoever. I mean why do we keep losing to lower tier NBA teams, but beat some of the elites? Check this out, we beaten Phx-twice, San antonio-twice, Boston, Lakers, NO-Once. And we've lost to the undermanned bulls, wolves, pacers, and hawks? I don't know what it is, but we stink it up against poor teams. I think cockyness plays a big factor.

I think the only chance we have is if teams start to slip, because without Biedrins in there, its really gonna hurt us for the time he is gone, and hopefully jack is gonna stay healthy.

by celicadriven27 on Feb 25, 2008 11:18 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

mmm
well.. this is the NBA... you don't become a pro player by sucking.

Also we beat the wolves 3 times before losing once. I can understand if we got a little cocky on the last one.

Pacers was bad but so is PHX losing to Twolves twice.

Hawks aren't that bad they beat the Lakers at home.
Also we were missing jackson and biedrins

Bulls was the only one that was inexcusable.

But we better win tomorrow we can't afford to lose these EASIER ones. Save our losing for the Lakers.

by saintdee on Feb 25, 2008 11:39 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

im just saying...
THEY DON'T PLAY DEFENSE!! 117 points to the hawks? explain that one, b/c im amazed by it. Most points they scored all year. Dubs pick and choose when they play defense, and most of the time its lackluster. I love this team so much, but its frustrating to watch. We haven't held an opponent under 100 points for almost a month now. They can't expect to win consistently when they give up so many points and getting down in a lot of games. I want the Warriors to make the playoffs as much as any Warrior fan, but they have to light a fire under themselves if they wanna make it.

Also, i've noticed at the games, too many bandwagon fans, the fans only cheer when the dubs do something exciting or playing well. When they are down, crowd is kind of dead, if we are the best fans in the nba, we should start proving it because the I think the dubs rely on the fans a lot.

by celicadriven27 on Feb 26, 2008 12:13 AM PST reply actions   0 recs

those bandwagon fans...
I like to call them the lower bowl...
not to say there aren't ANY hardcore fans down there, I'm sure there's quite a lot. But those louder, less reserved hardcore fans can't afford courtside.
I was able to go to the last home loss of the playoffs vs Utah, and it totally wasn't as loud as everybody who went to every previous home game said it was... you know who I blame? the lower bowl. All those corporate ^&*('s sitting there nicely with their hands folded on their laps. They totally gave away home court advantage.

by Baron Von DOOM on Feb 26, 2008 1:06 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

but
do you want us to cheer when Harrington airballs a 3? or when Pietrus steps out of bounds? or when Barnes throws a lazy pass?

that doesn't make any sense.. you cheer when your team does something right not when they are sucking it up. You cheer when your opponent are sucking. When your opponent bricks a 3 you cheer. You cheer when your opponent blows a easy layup... you don't do it when your team misses.

by saintdee on Feb 26, 2008 1:36 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

True...
But if you watch a game at any top college school or a good NFL team, the crowd always cheers the hardest when the OTHER TEAM HAS THE BALL so as to disrupt them.  Anyone can cheer for a good play.  It takes a hardcore fan to cheer constantly to attempt to help their team.

by Dubs fan in Boston on Feb 26, 2008 6:24 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

correct
if anything, warriors fans always rise when they feel the team needs it.  when they're down 10 and they put together a little 4-pt run, the crowd will rise and will the team forward.  this "hardcore fan" bs is just that: bs.
"We're all corrupt bastards." - Don Nelson

by GameSix on Feb 26, 2008 8:03 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

but this team feeds off emotion
and sometimes they need the crowd to re-energize them, especially when they're doing bad. This team doesn't have that veteran killer instinct, and arguably Baron is the only one who really can tap into that cold blooded mentality so far.

The point stated previously is that they often need that energy from the crowd during defensive possessions, and I think that if you wait for them to make an scoring run, it might be too late, like the Hawks game.

As we all know, much of the Dubs' best scoring comes off of their defense.

by Baron Von DOOM on Feb 27, 2008 12:19 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

I don't think it's BS...
there's a lot of casual fans out there, which is inevitable as the team gets better and those that have been ignoring them for awhile, or are from out of town and want to see good basketball, start paying attention.

I'm not saying everyone has to be a screaming idiot either (like there's ladies who scream when Monta is shooting free throws), and most Warriors fans have had to be hardcore fans to endure the last 12 years... or even become a fan in the middle of that desperate time.

Warriors fans we're the best in the league... but this season more than last year, I've noticed the opponent's ability to quiet the crowd at times. I think we were all hungrier last year. Part of that might have to do with the influx of casual or corporate fans, and maybe some of it could be due to having our thirst quenched slightly.

by Baron Von DOOM on Feb 27, 2008 12:31 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

It's probably more noticable now...
Because it's more of an anomaly to quiet the crowd than during the last 12 years.

In general, I don't care whether somebody's a "hardcore" fan or not.  If you're standing up and cheering constantly, great, more power to you.  If you're sitting there enjoying the game without blowing out your sound box, great.  Enjoy the game and root for your team.  If you can't acquire/afford tickets, root for your team at home or whatever.  Do your thing.

What pisses me off is people that see the team doing well, buy a jersey and call themselves a fan because it's the cool thing to do.  You're not a fan if you can't name 6-7 players on the team.  You're not a fan if you don't know that we made a trade last year for Jax and TMNT.  You're not a fan if you don't know that we missed the playoffs for a lot of years in a row.  You're not a fan if you're more interested in the hot dogs and looking cool in your "The City" #5 jersey than the game (who wears #5?  I dunno... whatsizname, that guy dribbling the ball!).

There are bandwagoners who care enough to learn about the team and root for the team, and then there are bandwagoners who're there to look cool (read: celebs who started going to clippers games two years ago, but now they've stopped).  I dislike the second group because it's disingenuous leaching onto whatever's hip.

by Dubs fan in Boston on Feb 28, 2008 9:11 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

I actually like...
how even when the team is down, and the opponents have maybe scored 2-3 consecutive buckets and were bringing the ball up and running down the clock...I love how the Oracle comes alive and begins to try and infuse the team with confidence and energy. I watch tons of games around the league and I honestly cant think of any other fans that cheer their team on as hard as Dubs fans, especially when they might be stinking it up.

I admit there are times when I go to games and the place can be shockingly dead, but it takes a really bad opponent run and a pretty ugly deficit to have something like that come about.......on the flipside, its damn exciting and the place goes wild when the Dubs start to widdle away at the deficit and start to come back =)

by Golden Gate Warrior on Feb 26, 2008 4:53 AM PST reply actions   0 recs

go warriors...
Like the " Lets go Warriors" or anything of that nature..anything to get energy in the arena. I know its hard to cheer when they are stinking it up, but giving the team confidence never hurt. Its motivation for the team to start playing better. Because you never know a chant might spark up the team.

underacheivers
does any team get less out of more?  I'm amazed there able to give up as many points as they do with an elite shotblocker like Camby down low.

Also there offensive flow sucks, it's like Iverson and Carmelo just flip a coin to see who will take the isolation jumper on each possesion.

Also Carmelo is not the type of guy that can be the best player on a championship contender.  Great scorer, great athlete, poor defender, bad team player, no heart.

And Squall is right, it's not a two team race, every team is one injury, or one bad stretch away from being out of it.
