The Marion Movement!

Alright, the Shaq-Marion trade got me thinking. I think Marion would be a perfect player for Nellieball. He can run, pass, shoot, rebound- all the qualities that Nelson seems to utilize/reward in big men. I think he's exactly the kind of player who could make the Dubs a championship contender. He would be a great answer for the other big men that we will likely face in the playoffs (Boozer, Nowitzki, Gasol, Shaq, etc). Only problem has been that there was no way the Suns would entertain trading intra-division. Now that he is in Miami it's another story. I posted a trade idea in the "Shaq to the Suns" diary but it was kinda buried and didn't generate any discussion so here it is:

Trade 1: http://games.espn.go.com/nba/features/traderesult?players=308~3019~3021~2173~510&teams=14~14~14~ 14~9&te=&cash

Al, Pietrus, POB, and Perovic for Marion

or:

Trade 2: http://games.espn.go.com/nba/features/traderesult?players=308~3019~2173~3242~510&teams=14~14~14~ 14~9&te&cash

Al, Pietrus, POB, and Wright for Marion

or:

Trade 3: http://games.espn.go.com/nba/features/traderesult?players=2751~308~3019~2173~510&teams=14~14~14~ 14~9&te&cash=

Al, Pietrus, POB, and Monta for Marion

To flesh out our depleted roster, and save Miami some more cash, we could use the TPE on Jason Williams.

We get the final piece to the puzzle, Miami saves some dough and acquires some promising young players.
Miami needs to stock up on young talent and try to assemble a new team around Wade. We need a reliable big man that Nellie trusts. Miami has previously expressed interest in Pietrus, but didn't have tradeable assets that we were interested in. Al is grumbling about his role here and as much as I appreciate the energy that Al brings, he is under-utilized in our system and would probably be happier and more productive elsewhere.

Trade 1 seems like a steal for us. We upgrade from Al to Marion and don't lose any key pieces. But Miami frees up some cash for next year and gets to evaluate POB, Pietrus, and Perovic.

Trade 2 is perhaps a bit more realistic. We give up a dependable day-to-day forward (Al) and a potential future star (Wright).

Trade 3 is harder to swallow. Obviously Monta is a great asset and it would be hard to see him go, but Marion is one of the few players out there that I would have to consider dealing him for. Also, having Marion on the books for next year would likely make it  hard for us to re-sign both Monta and Biedrins. If we had to let one of them go, I would have to go with Monta.

What do you guys think? Do these packages make sense? Should Mullie get on the phone and try to bring Marion to the bay?

This FanPost is a submission from a member of the mighty Golden State of Mind community. While we're all here to throw up that W, these words do not necessarily reflect the views of the GSoM Crew. Still, chances are the preceding post is Unstoppable Baby!

i dont thinkso
the point of miami was to see if marion can fit in their system. If not then they start rebuilding. No need for them to take any trades right now.

by saintdee on Feb 7, 2008 2:30 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

I think
the primary reason for the trade, from Miami's perspective, was to dump Shaq.

I'm sure they like Marion, but I doubt they would refuse to listen to offers for him. He has a big contract and will be looking for a big extension. He will likely put up good numbers in Miami but is not going to turn them into a playoff team this season or a championship team anytime soon.

Dude, Marion didn't make the Suns a contender, what on Gods green earth makes you think Marion will make us a contender?

Trade 1 - What makes you think that giving the Heat all of our scrubs will get us Marion? Plus I'm pretty sure the salaries don't match. At least make it semi realistic. Plus Marion is due for an extension.

Trade 2 - I wouldn't throw Wright in this trade, plus if we took on Marion's contract it would be next to impossible to offer Marion, Ellis, AB and possibly BD extensions, let alone fill out a bench.

Trade 3 - Once again, the salaries don't even come close to matching, plus I'm not sure I give up Ellis for a Marion rental.

All in all, 99% of the trade diaries I've seen suck, including this one. We aren't going to get Marion for many different reasons, including that he can't be traded before the deadline. We don't have enough money, or what we would be giving up would be way too much for a 1 year rental on a player who wouldn't put us over the top. Also JWill for the TPE doesn't really matter since his contract expires this year. And like I said, what makes you think giving a team our scrubs will net all stars? None of these trades are even remotely realistic.

According to the trade machine
the salaries match. Am I missing something?

Well...
>>Dude, Marion didn't make the Suns a contender, what on Gods green earth makes you think Marion will make us a contender?

Because we would have a better team than the Suns.

Trade 1:

Well honestly I don't think the Heat would take this trade but they would be saving a lot of $, getting a reliable forward in Al with a much more manageable contract than Marion's, a potentially serviceable big man in Perovic, and another player that they have documented interest in, Pietrus (why they are interested in Pietrus is beyond me though). I added the TPE for J-Will to make the trade more attractive for Miami (they save around $4 million immediately).

Trades 2 and 3:

I acknowledged that it would be hard to re-sign Monta and Biedrins, if we acquired Marion. It's a gamble, sure. If we go deep into the playoffs maybe guys settle for a little less $ to keep the team together. If not, we let Marion and/or Baron expire and start rebuilding.

Because we would have a better team than the Suns.

I would definitely be interested in your reasoning to that statement.

Frontcourt:Biedrins, Marion, POB, Wright, Al

We would have Marion and Biedrins as our frontcourt. Okay, last time I checked, Amare is still leaps and bounds better than AB, no offense to Biedrins, but its true. The warriors have a little more depth, but Phoenix has more talent. Shaq, if he can stay healthy is still 7th in the league in scoring for centers, and still amongst the league leaders in FG%. Plus a motivated Shaq is an unhappy league.

Advantage Phoenix

Wings: Ellis, Jackson, Azuibuke, Barnes

Our combo guard is better than their combo guard (Barbosa). We have Jackson as our other main wing. Jackson can win games, but can also lose games for you whereas Bell is a steady presence on the defensive end and will rain 3's on you all game. I would still but Diaw and Hill above Azuibuke and Barnes. Hill can still school dudes. Diaw is returning to his 06' form (which is another reason why PHX shipped Marion).

Advantage: Phoenix

PG:

Baron vs. Nash. No backups for either team. Both are, or should be All-Stars. Nash leads the league in assists. Baron is second in steals. Hard to like one over the other.

Advantage: Tie

Warriors, Stupidest franchise in the league.

I don't think so.
I don't think the warriors would do this trade. Basically Marion is a half year rental player. Both he and Baron can opt out this summer, plus we have two RFA's, 6UFA's (MP, Barnes, Kelenna, Cro, Webber, POB). No matter how many stars you have, you still need a bench.

Marion and the warriors would be in the same position as Marion and the Suns. Marion knew he wasn't gonna get the extension he wanted in PHX and bitched his way out of town. What makes u think we will give him an extension?

If you really want to give Wright away for half a year of Marion, then i am glad you aint GM.

Not with the West getting uber strong the second half of the season. Getting Marion wont make us a contender. I think we need more size now.

My bad the salaries do match, I was just going by rough numbers in my head and didn't even notice the trade machine links.

by J Rich 4 MVP on Feb 7, 2008 2:50 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

I agree but...
"Marion and the warriors would be in the same position as Marion and the Suns."

You do realize the Suns with Marion have the best record in the West. I'd take that over our chances right now...

With that being said, I would NOT trade him for Wright especially if he's just a rental for the remainder of the season. Marion was a cancer on the Suns partly because he wanted more touches, he ain't gonna anymore of them here...

by R I O T on Feb 7, 2008 5:07 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Not gonna happen
Marion will be a Heat for a long time so stop with the dude why won't the Heat take this deal posts...

Riley said last night he sees Wade & Marion as the new version of Pippen & Jordan. I think this deal makes the Heat a legit squad in the East and Marion like KG will be an All Star for years to come. Marion and Wade are both dynamic and versitile that all Miami needs is role players now particularly a PG. They won't make the playoffs but the will be one of the Hottest teams in the 2nd half and we all know what that did for the Dubs in 06.

by UweBlog on Feb 7, 2008 4:04 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

OK maybe...
...they think Wade/Marion will be the next Jordan/Pippen but I don't.

Giving Marion the huge $ he will likely command still doesn't make sense to me for the Heat.

I don't think that with Marion the Heat will be "one of the hottest teams in the second half" though. Only time will tell but I don't think there's any way they make the playoffs.

by ebot on Feb 7, 2008 4:09 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Think about it though.
They can't afford to have a 3 year rebuilding process. Not with Wade's contract coming up in 2 years. They cannot afford to have losing seasons, because losing seasons means unhappy superstar which means unequal value coming back in a trade.

I believe Marion will be given his extension, and if not, they will look to sign a major frontcourt player like Elton Brand. Right now Miami has no low post player to speak of. I also think what they decide to do will depend on where they end up in the draft.

If they get the number one pick they could take a Beasley and resign Marion and have a legit 3-4 interchangeable combo.

If they get a 2-3 pick they could take Derrick Rose and let Marion go and try and sign Elton Brand. Thus solving their pg problems AND their low post problems.

Miami should and probably will look to "retool" rather than rebuild. They can't risk losing because they will lose Wade.

umm dude THINK
why would we give away so many people just for one guy.....
4 players come on man
maybe 2 like Pietrus and POB for marion ... but who noes...

Yup
"Never give up lots of guys for just one guy," that's what I always say.

POB, Pietrus, Croshere, Kostacoast, and Troy Hudson for LeBron...? Nah. Let us keep Hudson and Perovic or no deal.

Umm dude, THINK, indeed.

Heat trading Marion?
I doubt it.  If the Heat wanted our players instead of Marion in the first place, they would have made it a 3-team deal instead.

by jlagace on Feb 7, 2008 5:44 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

Marion going to Warriors...
I guess we can keep on dreaming. I still kinda wish KG was going to the warriors..lol... Anyway, I'm hoping Webber's return will provide a better low post game and I'm hoping that we will be more formidable against our trouble teams. (e.g. Utah, San Antonio, Boston). Although we've done well against San Antonio lately.

Baron for Marion???
Being that the West is getting more and more dominant, shouldn't the Warriors look toward the future and make moves to better their chances of wnning a championship? There is no way they are going to win in this year. Let's trade an aging Baron for a younger and more athletic Marion.

Baron and Jackson for Marion and Davis

MIAMI HEAT:
Davis
Wade
Jackson
Haslem
Blount

FUTURE WARRIORS:
*draft a point guard
*may be sign a star PF like Brand or O'neal
*i rather put Wright at the 4 spot
PG ???
SG Ellis
SF Marion
PF Wright
C  Biedrins

ROFL, how do you expect to pay Brand, Ellis, Marion and Biedrins? Not to mention we'd still have Al's salary and absolutely nobody on the bench.

PG ARENAS

This team is considerably worse than the Suns before the Marion trade.

Nash = Arenas
Barbosa/Bell = Ellis
Marion = Marion
Grant Hill > Wright
Amare >>> Biedrins

no thanks
as much as I like Matrix's game, I don't want his attitude on our team.  Seriously, dude was not happy playing on a championship contender all because he wasn't THE guy.  Not to mention that he was making more money than his teammates.  Usually, winning keeps people happy.  But winning AND beaucoup bucks and this guy was still upset.  We don't need that kind of ego cause at the end of the day, a team with Matrix as THE guy, ain't winning any rings anyway.

by dirrty on Feb 8, 2008 12:26 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

pretty pointless
since he can't be traded again before the deadline. And why on earth would we trade for someone eligible for FA in the offseason? And for 17+ MILLION.

17+ MILLION?!!

I SAID 17+ MILLION....

The dude better be damn well capable of creating his OWN SHOT, which the dude ain't.

Pass on the Matrix. The trilogy is over.
