Around SBN: Lance Berkman Could Have Torn ACL

Would GS draft another TarHeel?

A quick perusal of draftexpress shows GS picking UNC's Tyler Hansbrough in the first round. Granted we need size, and Hansbrough seems more ready physically to do battle in the NBA than BWright was/does - but doesn't the combination of BWright's recent if limited success suggest we might go elsewhere with our pick?

Lots of "love" for other players on the list - my secret fave is UConn's man-child Hasheem Thabeet, a shot-blocking physical presence we just (might) luck into or be able to trade up to get. It's highly unlikely we'd be able to trade into the top 10 so discussing Beasley, Rose, etc. is not realistic at this point. Interesting that GTown's Hibbert isn't projected higher - wonder if he regrets not coming out last year?

Does anyone else think Brook Lopez is over-valued at #4? And Hansbrough under-valued at #20? Having seen Ryan Anderson (Cal) I wouldn't draft him until the second round, if at all. He can't get his shot off against decent PAC 10 teams (see Stanford).

Who's your #1 priority for GS to target in this draft - and have you seen them actually play or are you reading a stat-line?

ugh...
I really hope they don't draft Hansbrough.  I don't think he'll really contribute in the NBA too much.  I mean, he's in his 4th year right now (right?) and he's not exactly dominating.  Of course, with the 20th pick you're either taking a huge risk or picking up a role player...

by kinetic on Mar 10, 2008 3:20 PM PDT reply actions

Not dominating?
He's in his 3rd year, and IS exactly dominating. He was just named one poll's Nat'l Player of the Year.  I don't know if this will translate to the pros (and I'm not certain he'll even go pro this year) but he most certainly is dominating in the college ranks. If 23 ppg and 10 rebounds per game on 54% shooting and 80%+ from the stripe in one of the premier basketball conferences, on his way to a third straight All American ranking, then no one is dominating.

didnt have a great game against stanford, but he did against UCLA, an even better team. Hes the leading scorer in the best league in the NCAA.

I DO
i admit im a homer, cuz i went to cal but there were 3 straight calls, or non-calls that should have gone the other way. Cal should have won that game.

I hate to admit it but stanford should have also beaten them. And it takes alot for me to side with stanford, so you know im not bein biased!

no foul on Anderson. Ball out of bounds to UCLA. Shot over the backboard. All bad calls. If one went our way, we would have won.

I agree
In the #18-24 range we'll picking, we're much more likely to find a swing/wing capable of sticking in the NBA than a big man. Any big men or PGs worth a damn are usually long gone by then.

Three semi-intriguing names on the DraftExpress board (with best/worst case scenarios):

  • Chris Douglas-Roberts (Jerry Stackhouse/Marquis Daniels)
  • Tyler Smith (Josh Howard/Damien Wilkins)
  • Brandon Rush (Eddie Jones/Kelenna Azubuike)

I'm on the Batum wagon.
I'd trade Harrington, tpe or our first to move up and grab batum in the late lottery.

Another guy I like is Vandy's Shan Foster. Dude can stroke the ball and would be in our range in the late first round.

I like Hansbrough
With the 20th pick we are not looking for the next superstar. We are looking for an instant contributor. It doesn't matter if Hansbrough dominated in college or not. My opinion is that he is dominating. The guy is averaging 23 points and 10 rebounds a game. Thats pretty good for a junior playing in a tough conference. You can't say Hansbough's game won't translate well into the NBA because he is similar to David Lee, Udonis Haslem, and Paul Milsap. Players like Haslem, Lee, and Milsap did not exactly dominated in college, but they did stay all 4 years and are pretty good players in the NBA. Guys like Pietrus, atheletic, low basketball IQ players are easy to find in the league. We should go after the best available player. If Hansbrough is the best available player so be it. I think he will be a pretty pro if he keeps that killer instinct.

The ACC isn't the conf. it used to be. Outside of UNC and Duke, who do you really have? Clemson maybe as the 3rd best team. If you take a look at UNC's schedule they basically had a cake walk this year. For people who want to draft TH, take a look at Josh McRoberts, that's about all he will ever amount to in the NBA. Plus I doubt see under any circumstance does our draft pick play next year, so if they aren't going to play you might as well pick someone with a bit more potential than Tyler. Also, I don't really think we have a pressing need to draft someone like Tyler, we have AB at C for years to come and with the duo of Al/Wright/MP2 or Barnes type player, there really isn't a place for him. Actually as it is, we'll probably be a little thin at the G position next year so I'd much rather draft a G or a back up PG for BD. Another player that I wouldn't mind id Devon Hardin to back up AB, the reason I say Hardin over Tyler is I don't think he could hack it with bigger guys, plus Hardin is athletic.

by J Rich 4 MVP on Mar 10, 2008 5:14 PM PDT up reply actions

Hardin
I think we have a good chance at getting Hardin, but I see him as another Francisco Elson, slightly better tho. You can't compare Tyler to Josh McRoberts. McRoberts is a softly who looks like that white guy from the Step it up 2 movie. I never liked McRoberts anyways and thought he was way too soft for the league. I think McRoberts ceiling is at Austin Croshere's level, while Hansbrough's ceiling is that of David Lee.

I don't like Ryan Anderson. I like him as a Cal player, but not as a pro. NBAdraft.net compared him to Croshere and I compare him to Steve Novak.

Hardin will definitely be in this year's draft because he is a senior, whereas Hansbrough still has a year left. I think Hansbrough might stay all  4years.

Another wing player wouldn't hurt, but we still need to address the issue of interior toughness.

by Snake Eyez on Mar 10, 2008 5:42 PM PDT up reply actions

Channing Tatum
I love the comparison of McRoberts to Tatum. Your comparison explains why i think Tatum sucks (he also sucks as a dancer, imo). Step Up 2 is a hilariously awful movie that EVERYONE must see.  Its the type of movie that you talk throughout cuz its so ridiculous.

Being Croshere-like seems pretty decent if it weren't for the bad back.  Hansborough is a great great college player, but he seems pretty robotic in my opinion.  But, his hustle, never ending energy, and ability to hit jumpers now seem like stuff teams need in role players.

pressing needs a'plenty
imo franchises should always draft BPA, but GSW will have pressing needs up and down the roster next year, and plenty of roster space

Guards (4-5-6?)
Baron Davis
Monta Ellis RFA gotta think he'll be re-signed
Kelenna Azubuike - will we re-sign him?
Marco Belinelli - on the roster, presumably
Stephen Jackson

Bigs (4)
Andris Biedrins RFA have to believe will return
Al Harrington
Kosta Perovic
Brandan Wright

Gonners
Matt Barnes - unless ...
Austin Croshere
Patrick O'Bryant
Mickael Pietrus
Chris Webber

Unless C.J. Watson returns, we could use a backup PG  if Monta can't grow into that role, but we'll need bigs too - even if AB is back and Wright pans out as a rotation player. We can and should make room for a quality big from the draft ...

Not really sold on Hansbrough, I would rather have Ty Lawson to back up Baron, but I doubt he will make it out of the lottery.  Wayne Ellington might even be a good option and he can be had late in the draft.  He is a super athlete who can stroke the 3, but lacks defense and strength.  Sounds like a typical Warrior!!

Bill Walker of Kansas St.
I'd like to see the dubs make him their small forward of the future after the Capt. Jack era, if he leaves early that is. He's a strong athlete at 6'6 220 with nice handles and solid d. he's only 20 so his game is not fully devoloped but I bet Jackson could school him on some things and make him his lil protege'. Plus He's got one of the smoothest Windmill Dunks I've seen. Not that big a gamble with the 20 something pick.

 Sky Walker info

Honestly I wasn't a fan of Hansbrough and his style of play last year, but a player with his  tenacity level and intencity and all that wouldn't be a terrible pick for us. but I think a proven, experienced, inexpensive big man would be a better move for the dubs if they could find one in the summer

by Muggsy on Mar 10, 2008 6:06 PM PDT reply actions

interesting
pick, from what i've seen of the guy, he's good and athletic, not sure about his shot. I agree though that the warriors should be going after big athletic 3, Jax needs a back-up/potential heir at the position, and this could be the draft to get one. there isn't any impact bigs at our potential draft position, plus we have two and a half projects at the big position already ( Biedrens, Wright ( love these two by the way), and Kosta (just called up), so we don't need another.

Hansbrough
As a Dukie, I hate Hansbrough. But, he is a phenomenal player. Perfect in Nellie's system.
  1. Plays with 150% energy. Seen him twice in Cameron and many times on TV. He is psycho T for a reason. This guy is nuts; legitimately a mental institution breakout, and that's a good thing. I have never seen a person play like him. He'll be able to run up and down.
  2. Can shoot the jump shot. Every time he shoot it, it looks terrible. and then it goes in.
  3. Gives us more size and can bang. Probably, the most And-1's in college basketball history. Can get in and fight.
  4. A rebounding machine. Especially on the offensive glass. I've seen him get 4-5 rebounds a game when he shouldn't. Even if he's at the free-throw line during the shot, just wills his way in.
Keep in mind, I'm a dookie. I hate him, but LOVE HIS GAME. He will succeed.

is actually a really intriguing prospect. Regardless of school, if you see a 7footer with a decent post game, jumpshot and overall feel for the game, not to mention he's the most NBA ready 5 in the NCAA, you'd take him pretty high. You do realize
That DraftExpress is not taking into account team needs on their mock draft.

Right?

They don't do that until later. So to say that they think the warriors will take this guy or that right now is mute considering they're going by BPA on down.

With that said, i say we go after a wing player. I'd use AL Harrington, the TPE and our 1st rounder as bait to move up to grab Nicholas Batum, Donte Greene, or Chase Budinger. Either that or take BPA available with our pick.

Warriors, Stupidest franchise in the league.

BPA vs need
ya, but it's moot whether the pick matches a need when most NBA teams pick best player available - when they are trying to address a need they trade up, down, etc. to find the solution

as thin as we are in the front court, can't see the warriors trading Harrington for a wing, and to throw in a pick seems over paying unless you're talking upper lottery pick

by hardcore on Mar 11, 2008 12:23 PM PDT up reply actions

I screw myself yet again!
I never fully explain my thought processes...

I should say that Al Harrington could be expendable with the (relative) emergence of Brandan Wright. Similar to the situation with Jrich last year, Al could find himself in the same position (expensive contract + budding and cheap player behind him). But that depends on if the newly resigned Nellie feels Wright can match the production of Harrington.

This then brings me to my theory that we could bait a team by using ANY form of Al Harrington, the TPE or our 1st in order to move up to take a swingman to replace Mickael Pietrus and/or Matt Barnes.

Promising young wing players such as Donte Greene, and Nicholas Batum are two such players that could excel in a warriors uniform. Batum can be an amazing two way player and has freakish athleticism that could definitely be a better Pietrus. I guess i'm still in 06' Rudy Gay-To-The-Damn-Rockets remission. As with Donte Greene, he gives you size at the 3-4. More of a sf in a pf's body. Has one of the prettiest jumpers in the NCAA and could definitely develop into a pure scorer in the NBA in the Rashard Lewis as his ceiling mold.

My take on taking the BPA is if you cannot trade up or trade your pick for another player. I feel you need to get the most value back for your pick since almost all the top players on your team's draft board will be gone anyway. Taking BPA regardless of team need in the late first round could prove beneficial down the road because it gives you options and maybe a valuable young player.

got it, but who backs up AB & BWright
if we move Harrington for a wing? imo, we're still too thin there to jettison a big

by hardcore on Mar 11, 2008 1:30 PM PDT up reply actions

hmm...
By getting out of Al's remaining contract (8+M this year) gives us more wiggle room under the cap. Saving money with Al gives us room to sign Monta and Biedrins. I'd bet the Warriors play hard-ball with Baron and let him exercise his contract but not extend him this year.

We'd still have the midlevel, and am sure we could use a portion of that (or all of it) w/o hitting the luxary tax.

Some names:
Kwame Brown (Yikes i know), Jamaal Magloire, Walter Hermann, Theo Ratliff, Chris Mihm, Craig Smith (R, but maybe), Dasagana Diop, Stro Swift, Brian skinner, Francisco Elson.

Obviously not the most glamorous names, but some of these guys could mesh well. Some of them can provide a veteran presence and play defense and rebound. They also might be sturdier than Croshere. If we're looking for depth, these names might come up (well in theoretical Lala land).

Warriors, Stupidest franchise in the league.

by kenntoe on Mar 11, 2008 2:58 PM PDT up reply actions

yikes
first, I think you're right about Baron - I doubt he'll opt out and doubt he'll be extended

second, it was my understanding that jettisoning JRich was to lighten the fiscal load such that we could safely extend Monta & AB, if we have to also send Harrington packing to do so we're in pretty deeep sheeeet

third, who among

Kwame Brown (Yikes i know), Jamaal Magloire, Walter Hermann, Theo Ratliff, Chris Mihm, Craig Smith (R, but maybe), Dasagana Diop, Stro Swift, Brian skinner, Francisco Elson.

- would fit Nelli-ball any better than Harrington?

We can't just flip Harrington for a wing, not with the roster we've got presently - and even if we draft a big and somehow flip Al straight up, we'd be relying on BWright to start, a rookie to back up, and Kosta ... oooh, not very deep

by hardcore on Mar 11, 2008 9:15 PM PDT up reply actions

I can't argue your depth question.
And that's probably where this deal is a deal just for the sake of dealing.

Dealing Harrington in my opinion is mainly about clearing room for Wright to prosper as the starting 4. I know its a big--gigantuhumongous leap to assume Wright might be effective as a starter. But who knows, it could be an option. I see less pressure to have a deep frontline if we get a decent SF who can help out on the boards. Similar to what Batum can provide.

As evidenced by the crazy-surprising trades this year, anything can happen. Al Harrington + our 1st or Al Harrington + TPE could bring us in another player/pick to add to our frontcourt depth. Add in a MLE signing and we have some able bodies to fill spots.

True: It is a possibility that the loss of Harrington could be too much. I'm hoping that Wright can make that second year leap (similar to LMA and Bosh) and become a consistent scorer.

Yes, I would be counting on a decent MLE signing to fill in as a backup to either the 3 or 4 spot.

I'd hope that along with sending Al Harrington off, that we'd send our TPE in a separate deal or trade our first rounder. one or the other, and certainly not all 3.

We could try and trade Harrington for depth at the 4 and take a guy like Love or Arthur.

Then use our TPE to sign Josh Childress. hypothetically possible.

So our depth could then come in the form of:

B Wright
Batum/Greene/Artuhur/Love
TPE player/1st rounder
MlE.

yea, saying todd fuller's name is like the sound and scene of a needle scratching across a record. awkward and inappropriate.

PG and PF
We'll be in need of another big man to back up AB and Wright/Al.  I like Hansboro as a high energy guy off of the bench. He's one of those guys that you think shouldn't be any good by looking at him, then annoys the hell out of you when he out-hustles you for boards and second-chance points. He'd be a solid role player IMO, and exactly what we want out of that position (leaving AB and Wright to mature as our starting 4 & 5 of the future).  If a solid PF isn't there, I have to agree with those who are targeting a big body PG.  An heir to Baron will have to compensate for Monte's small size, to switch onto the bigger SGs in the league.  We should try to pick one up now to groom under Baron for the next 2-3 years.

I don't mind the loss of MP and Barnes so much as they create more room for Buke and Marco, but we'd certainly need  someone to make up for their D and rebounding.

I'd rather
take Darrell Arthur than Hansbrough. Although both could turn out to have similar roles on their teams down the road. Both can come in and fit the system GSW runs nicely since both UNC and Kansas run fast break oriented offenses.

Actually, in the end i wouldn't mind Hansbrough, i just prefer Arthur (his athleticism is the deciding factor, but Hansbrough shows the heart).

Warriors, Stupidest franchise in the league.

Exactly
So many people are looking for the next superstar power forward with the 20th pick that they are forgetting that we need a backup front court player. Hansbrough is a high energy guy and that is exactly what we need off the bench. Someone compared him to Nick Collison and that is a fair comparison. Collison averages a shade below 10 and 9. David Lee averages close to the same and both of them are not regular starters. Collison was the 12th pick of the 03 draft. If Hansbrough falls to us at 20 and puts up numbers like Collison then that would be a steal for us. Hansbrough might be tad more aggressive than Collison tho. I am not advocating that we pick Hansbrough, Im just saying he is going to help us and would not be a bad pick at # 20. No, he is not going to be the next Todd Fuller. He has more fight in him than Fuller.

i see
courtney lee as a sleeper. not getting much hype because he goes to western kentucky, but he can shoot the outside shot and can play good defense. could become monta's backup or the sg, if monta can become a pg.

draft
I don't see the warriors drafting another swing type player, with 35-40 mpg locked up next year with Boom, Monta, and Jack.  We need a big man but it will be slim where we pick.  Hans is not gonna leave UNC this year.  Darrin Collison or Anthony Randolph would be the two picks who could logically still be there and fit on this team

yes
I would love this. Both picks. Prolly not gonna happen tho.

Hasheem Thabeet is my #1 if he falls. Supertall block machine without being an uncoordinated clunker.

Ty Lawson is the PG I want. Not sure if he slips but hes a perfect fit, superfast, pesky on D, him and monta would be such a fast fun backcourt. Fills need of backup PG assuming CJ Watson doesnt stick around or get playing time or whatever.

Im game for Love/Tyler Hans if they fall. I think theyd make nice role guys like in the Haslem-mold.

Im really high on Jason Thompson. Athletic big from a crappy college team, has played well against good teams, superstats.

Id be really happy with Devon Hardin. Joey Dorsey would be a reach but I like his boarding skillz.

So ya it depends whos still around, I think this draft has lots of potential non-busts.

also
One guy that I think we should take a serious look at as a backup for Baron is DeMarcus Nelson from Duke. He is strong and super athletic and will most likely be available for us to take in the late second round.  Doesn't have the geratest handles (they're adequate) or Ast/TO ratio but give him a few years studying under Baron, and I think this part of his game will improve (see Monta Ellis).  The best part of his game is that he is extremely quick and knows how to get to the rim and finish.  He's also got a pretty decent jumper with range to about 20 feet.

Demarc
I've seen D-marc play about 20-30 times live in Cameron. I think we could get him in the second round, and he'd be a phenomenal pick. Duke runs a lot (D'Antoni's offense), but D-marc plays shut down defense (he draws the opponent's best player every game). He is long, loves to drive, but can knock down the jumper. Plus he doesn't mind playing defense. Would be great pick in 2nd rd (first is a little reach for us)

dude
if davon jefferson is dumb enough to go out in the draft this year (he could get picked hella high next year if he stayed) which he absolutely is dumb enough to do. get him. he's almost too much of a warrior already.
saying psycho t is the next fuller is hella ignorant. just because he's white and has a dumb looking haircut doesn't mean he or his game is anything like fuller's. drafting todd fuller is the most inexplicable and terrible thing that ever happened to the warriors and should only be spoken about other white softies such as josh mccryberts.
he'd toughen up dumbowright and the latvian legend in practice too.
