Warriors pick up Nelson's option

http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=3288053
Great move by the Warriors picking up his option now. It gives Nelson more comfort and also encourages him to play his bench more. Is this a great move by the W's front office or does it give Nellie too much slack to by even more of a mad scientist?

Hopefully this means more playing time for Brandan Wright and the bench as a whole.

This FanPost is a submission from a member of the mighty Golden State of Mind community. While we're all here to throw up that W, these words do not necessarily reflect the views of the GSoM Crew. Still, chances are the preceding post is Unstoppable Baby!

I like the move
As much as he makes me mad sometimes.

Definitely think it will give him the security he may feel he needs. This might reek benefits for the bench and youngsters (excluding POB). I love Nellie as a talent evaluator (Anyone who can pull of Traylor for Dirk is a mad genius). I'm glad he'll be on hand for the next draft and offseason.

well done
ensures that the dubs are "going for it," otherwise what reason does nellie have to keep coaching?  The love of the game?  PSH.

yessss
i'm all for it...less BS in the summertime

although i don't see how this would lead nellie to play BW more...

I think...
it has to do with his job security.  If he played the bench more he is risking games.  Thus, now that the Warriors picked up his option he doesn't have to worry as much about his job based on winning games.  Now he can rest his starters more...

by wander7 on Mar 11, 2008 1:08 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

...he don't need no security...
Truth is Nelly can stay as long as he wants to stay.. (Remember all the bad coaches we went thru before hiring nelson?) IMO he's doing the warriors a favor by staying. When he's ready to leave, he'll leave and that'll only be when he feels he's done as much as he could for this club. and that'll be last we ever see of the playoffs for a long time... I LOVE YOU NELLY! PLEASE DON'T EVER DIE!

=1
he may have a two-year outlook on "winning" so improving players for next year (like BWright) while we still have the nucleus of Baron, Jax, and presumably AB, Monta, etc. - he's more motivated to play young'ns to win, just next year instead of this one

We also might
be willing to use the damn TPE and pay the tax to give Nellie a decent chance at a ring.

BD is back regardless
since no one else is going to pick him up for the amount he'd leave on the table

more like front office realized only Nelson was going to be able to rein in BD, I wouldn't be surprised if their "run" at GSW ends simultaneously
following next season ....

this doesnt mean..
anything about brandon wright....the warriors would have to be retarded to not pick nelson up for 08-09 and nelson obviously knew that. he knew he'd be coming back anyways. this doesnt make him feel more secure. he was as secure as one can get. his goal is still to make the playoffs which, at this point, means we gotta win most of our games..which means we're not gonna play brandon wright that much more

He's still the only coach to get us there
Would anyone in their right mind call for his head if we missed the playoffs this year?  This is in no way related to young players' PT.  Nelson doesn't play them because he's not comfortable with what they'll do on the court.  They'll get their turn, but stop trying to read into Nelly's head, you're just making mine hurt with all of the "Wow, he's totally gonna play PoB now.  Kosta would really be better than Beans out there, look at his per minute averages!"  Just stop.  Please.  He's going to continue to play the players he knows will get him the W.  He won't play PoB because one game he'll go out there and hit a few shots, the next he'll have 3 turnovers and give up 3 more dunks in 5 minutes.  Same with the other young guys.

next year
I know it is still too early to really be thinking about this, but I wanted to get a handle on what others think about the issue.

Who do you think will return next year?
I know there will be a lot of people who can opt out, decide to stay, or decide to leave...

I feel since Nellie will be back...

-- Biedrens and Ellis will most likely STAY

-- Baron Davis will most likely STAY

-- Marco Bellinelli, and Brandon Wright will be developed more (meaning I feel the organization will pay more attention to them)
(which leads me to believe that...)
-- Kelenna Azubuike will most likely opt out and go to a team that he can better develop his skills with more playing time (I really want him to remain a Warrior but with such depth at the wings I don't know how big of a role he'll really have and I feel he deserves better)

-- Matt Barnes will probably stick around? I feel he has a lot of heart and dedication, but I don't know how much the warriors are willing to cough up financially...

Then there are players like CJ Watson (back up point), and Croshere (veteran big man)...

So, what are your thoughts to who the warriors will want to keep, and which players will want to remain a part of the golden state warriors team?

from Would GS draft another TarHeel?
Guards (4-5-6?)
Baron Davis
Monta Ellis RFA gotta think he'll be re-signed
Kelenna Azubuike - will we re-sign him?
Marco Belinelli - on the roster, presumably
Stephen Jackson

Bigs (4)
Andris Biedrins RFA have to believe will return
Al Harrington
Kosta Perovic
Brandan Wright

Gonners
Matt Barnes - unless he comes back cheap
Austin Croshere
Patrick O'Bryant
Mickael Pietrus
Chris Webber

Unless C.J. Watson returns, we could use a backup PG  if Monta can't grow into that role, but we'll need bigs too - even if AB is back and Wright pans out as a rotation player. We can and should make room for a quality big from the draft

JB the Draft diary was getting buried so...
I copied my reply to your reply here:

I can't argue your depth question.

And that's probably where this deal is a deal just for the sake of dealing.

Dealing Harrington in my opinion is mainly about clearing room for Wright to prosper as the starting 4. I know its a big--gigantuhumongous leap to assume Wright might be effective as a starter. But who knows, it could be an option. I see less pressure to have a deep frontline if we get a decent SF who can help out on the boards. Similar to what Batum can provide.

As evidenced by the crazy-surprising trades this year, anything can happen. Al Harrington + our 1st or Al Harrington + TPE could bring us in another player/pick to add to our frontcourt depth. Add in a MLE signing and we have some able bodies to fill spots.

True: It is a possibility that the loss of Harrington could be too much. I'm hoping that Wright can make that second year leap (similar to LMA and Bosh) and become a consistent scorer.

Yes, I would be counting on a decent MLE signing to fill in as a backup to either the 3 or 4 spot.

I'd hope that along with sending Al Harrington off, that we'd send our TPE in a separate deal or trade our first rounder. one or the other, and certainly not all 3.

We could try and trade Harrington for depth at the 4 and take a guy like Love or Arthur.

Then use our TPE to sign Josh Childress. hypothetically possible.

So our depth could then come in the form of:

B Wright
Batum/Greene/Artuhur/Love
TPE player/1st rounder
MlE.

Maggette
could be the SF you are thinking about, can rebound, score, hits FT & defends

if we could add him without losing Harrington, and if your hopes for Wright came to fruition we could be pretty deep with Harrington backing up as the 6th man Nelson's always said he should be ... not sure how the combo of Baron-Monta-Jax-Maggette fits into three spots, but Nelson could start all four ...

fun ideas to kick around ...

All Time Winningest Coach Ever
One thing that is going to happen for sure: This pretty much ensures Don Nelson will be the all time winningest coach in NBA history. I know he wants that even though he will down play it.

Currently 1271 wins. (2nd all time).

Lenny Wilkens is 1st with 1332.

He needs 61 more victories. That is next years win total alone. (Would be if we had Jax for 82 games).

He will make history next year with us, and then proceed to blaze a fatty (cigar) and chase it with a can of beer . That's history.

Put a little mustard on it
