Shane Battier

From Yahoo! Sports article...

Shane Battier quoted:

"Chasing that guy around," Battier said, "you want a Budweiser or two after the game because you earned it."

Gotta love it. Definitely jumped up my list of favorite NBA players.

Never liked him....
But he is a tough-nosed defender.  I'll give his due props.  Plays hard...

under-rated
Guy is unbelievable. One of my favorite players in the league. his value is never shown on the stat line nore highlights on TV.
this league would be more fun if half the players had his work ethic.

overrated???
Omg, you must not have watch the game yesterday morning.  EVERY single shot that kobe took, Battier had a hand straight up in his face.  And did you not notice, that Battier blocked Kobe's last shot?

This guy is underrated!  I prefer him over Bruce Bowen any day.

So please tell me how he is overrated?

that's the thing i like about him
the way he plays tough defense without being a punk like bruce bowen.  He's a not-evil Bruce Bowen.

To steal from the Giants new ad campaign,
He's a gamer. Plays D, hits some shots and goes after loose balls, too bad he's from duke.
My girlfriend hates that I'm into basketball again, and that I yell at the TV during games.

by sfwarriorcvg on Mar 17, 2008 8:17 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Definately deserves the whole pack...
I love Battier. Always have, but then again I'm a Duke fan.  The guy does everything. Scores when he needs to, rebounds, takes charges, gets on the floor, hustles, and most importantly, is one of the best defenders in the game. And the fact that he's versatile enough to guard Lebron one night, and Kobe the next, is phenomenal.
He's an incredibly hard-working, unselfish, fundamentally sound player. The ultimate glue guy. Or, like someone else we know, the ultimate teammate.

Note To Duke Fans:
in the future please abstain from any comments regarding your bromidic, cliche interests.        please retain such bland subject matter for your daily bouts of insipid water cooler exchanges.   if this is not clear enough for you, allow me to be blunt:   the fact that shane battier is capable of raising his arm in the air repeatedly is neither impressive, nor noteworthy.   it is a sad state of affairs when such an elementary act is actually perceived as deserving praise.   being regarded as a defensive specialist simply means your game is weak.      shane battier and duke are the missionary position of basketball.   most people would rather have anything else, but in some rigid ideologies it's the only exceptable way.
If I didn't waste my time doing this I'd be doing something even less satisfying, like your girlfriend.

He's right though
He is probably overrated, like most Dukies. Tonight he's getting absolutely abused on both ends of the floor by Pierce and Powe.

Sure, he's a useful defensive glue-guy type -- basically a smarter, less athletic Mickael Pietrus. Let's not go overboard just 'cos his team went on a fluky 22-game streak.

too bad
his posts aren't as eloquent as yours.  good thing others are here to expound on his thoughts.

Bimbo...
Being a good defender isn't impressive? Playing excellent D and holding arguably the greatest scorer in the history of the game (Kobe) to a porous shooting night isn't noteworthy?  Surely, by watching the uber-boring Spurs and Pistons, you must know by now that Defense wins championships. If defense is so easy, how come the majority of NBA players, most of which are smart, many of which have college degrees, and all of which study the game, are so bad at it?

Sorry, with all due respect to you, I'm going to agree with the professional analysts...all of whom agree that Battier is one of the most indispensable players in the league.

As for Duke...saying they have poor NBA talent means nothing, in my opinion.  What is a college coach's job? to prepare his player for the NBA? no. It's to make the player the best he can be and win games in college. not in the NBA, in college.  Duke doesn't recruit and ride the bandwagon of players such as, say, Kevin Durant, where he is the focal point of the team for a year before taking the big money in the pros.  Duke generates great college players who are fundamentally sound, accustomed to winning, and unselfish.  And many of those players, such as Hill, Brand and Boozer, have solid NBA careers.

Also, no need to attack Duke fans.  Don't get mad at me for loving Duke, and it's not my fault they're nearly always an upper-echelon team...

how dare you.

i dont think you've ever heard of michael jordan, have you?

you said it yourself, battier held him to a porous shooting night. hell, for all we know, travis diener has held kobe to a porous shooting night too.

Got to give Battier
a lot of credit, Jackson was hot from everywhere coming into tonight, but Battier did his work.

I said arguably.  MJ was 5 times the player Kobe will ever be...but in terms of pure scoring ability...I'd rank Kobe right there with Jordan and Chamberlain as the best to ever play the game.

And yes, Diener might have held Kobe to a porous shooting night, but he's hardly held most team's best players to poor offensive nights on a consistent basis for one of the leagues hottest teams, has he?

There's really nothing you can intelligently bash Battier for...

Come on, no one rates him highly for him to be overrated to begin with!
