B Wright is Right!

Man, is it me or is it that every time B Wright comes in the game, the kid does a good job.  Maybe it's because he's playing when the game is out of hand or when a player is hurt such the case with Andris.

I don't know, but this kid is actually good.  Good enough to play him for extended periods of time.  Yes B Wright has talent, yes he has a 7'4" wingspan, yes he played at UNC, yes we traded him for J Rich, but most relevant reason B Wright is doing well when he plays is that he really wants to play i.e. HE HUSTLES!  He hustles on every single possession.  He has a lot to prove and when that's the case, you're hungry and want to excel.

Right now the Dubs know they have to win a majority of their games to make the Playoffs.  They seem to be a little tired and who better to play then a 19 year old who is hungry, is smart, has a knack for getting rebounds and tip in's, plays good interior help defense, can block shots/alter shots, can actually hit a 14 foot shot for a tall guy, can take the ball up court himself and can run on the break for a mega slam dunk finish.

Nellie, God love the man, but play B Wright more.  Am I the only one that thinks B Wright can bring that extra piece of energy that we are missing right now?  I know Andris and Al are starters and deserve to be, but B Wright wants to play.  Just give him more of a chance Nellie.  Am I the only one who thinks that?  Watch think about B Wright?

PoB looks great too!
We should totally give PoB all of Pietrus and Barnes' minutes.  Oh, and Beans sucks.  We should draft Kevin Love.  In fact, we should just kidnap him next time we're in LA and see if anybody notices.  Anybody want to write my blog entries for me?

I agree...
B Wright has been awesome in the few minutes he has played.  Last night alone, he got 2 blocks!!  Bob and Jim brings up a good point though concerning minutes.  Brandan avg.'s 9.35 minutes, even though he is young, he might not be accustomed to playing the long minutes.  So yeah the potential is there definitely, but we should trust in Nellie's judgment.

i think
BWright is doing well because teams aren't sure what he is capable of because he doesn't play a lot. Secret Weapon in other words.

Nelie did the Wright thing!
I think it was a good idea that Nellie Benched him for half the season, because it made him hungry.

One of the knocks on B-Wright coming out into the draft, was motivation.  He was hearled as the potential number 3 pick behind Oden and Durant! dealing with that kind of hype, made him lax and not as motivated in certain games in North Carolina.

I think sitting on the bench, and seeing what happened to POB sparked him to work harder and put on some weight.

Now all he needs to do is continue to show up, I think if we make the playoffs, and putting him in that frenzy enviornment during a game will just help his motivation and work ethic.

It might be a good Idea to buy a B-Wright Jersey, now cause they'll probally be sold out come next year.

It's startling how so many people watch basketball, yet so few actually play it.

the myth of Wright's motivation
The "knock" on Wright's "motivation" started on a couple of draft sites at the end of last season.  One site echoed another and all of a sudden it was a 'fact' that Wright had problems with his focus on the game, never mind that this surfaced around last April for the first and only time.  Never mind that the 'questions' never actually came from anyone with a name but were attributed to "there are questions" or "some have questioned."  Ah the great thing about the internet.  Say it, get someone to repeat it and what do you know?  It's true!

The problem never existed before the draft sites started echoing each other.  His coaches never questioned his work ethic, not in high school, not at UNC.  In fact, almost all comments from actual sources said that he was a hard worker.

So now the revisionist history is that Nelson made him hungry by keeping him on the bench, curing the work ethic problem that never was.

and he has a nice touch
looks like he might be able to develop a deep shot which will make him more attractive for next year's rotation

wright is a good player but....
only for 15-20 minutes a game at the most. let him come off the bench more often than he does for some spurts of energy but the kid cant play well for a whole game which we saw during 2 or 3 of the games in which he started wen biedrins was out

by 3Kings650 on Mar 19, 2008 1:33 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Well, duh
Nellie left him on the bench for more than half the season, so it's expected that Wright's not fully geared for a 35+ minute night.

Wright is good for 10-15 minutes
Obviously he is not ready for heavy minutes, but I feel that he is effective in his role.  He is most effective when he is playing with the starters (Baron and Jack) diming it to him for easy shots.  He is also good for help off the ball on defense.  He will not be ready for more minutes until next season.  He is only a 19-year-old rookie afterall.

True but...
the more playing time he gets the better he'll get. It's kinna late in the season to build a player which is why I wanted to see him and Rambo get a little more playing time earlier in the year but Nellie has never been fond of rookies unless your name is Dirk of course.

When I was 19
I could play non stop in your face high intensity hoops for 3+ hours straight.  The kid ain't going to be tired if he plays 20-25 minutes, hell even 30-35 minutes.  Fatigue should have absolutely nothing to do with the fact he gets very little playing time.  He's a world class 19 year old athlete, not a 30 year old out of shape schlub or hmm hmm, Chris Webber-LOL.

Nellie, play B Wright more!

Just because he can doesn't make it a good idea
"You can drive with your feet if you want to. That don't make it a good idea." -Chris Rock

Sure, he can run up and down for 48 minutes.  That doesn't mean he'll be effective for that long.  He is undersized and is effective only in spurts.  He is not mature enough and ready basketball-wise for heavy minutes.

by 5 1 ROH on Mar 19, 2008 2:59 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

undersized?
You play with your hands(7'5" wingspan) not the top of your head.

by Psion on Mar 19, 2008 5:46 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

6'9", 205 lbs ain't gonna cut it
He needs to put on some weight so that he doesn't get pushed around the paint.
I agree with you though that in terms of wingspan, he's a monster... that's how he gets all those swats off the ball.

really?  you were playing in the NBA at 19?  I think having to guard 250 pound ripped professional athletes is a little different than the in your face basketball you were playing.

Chris Rock
That guy kills it-funny as hell.  He was MIA for a long time!

If I drove with my feet in a car race and I was in the top 10, well, I'd keep driving with my feet.  B Wright has shown nothing but good things when he plays.  At least give him an opportunity to play longer minutes. 9 minutes a night isn't very much.

The kid is good..
and he's gonna get better but I think he's playing about the right amount of time for us and him right now.  In the next couple of years he will be a huge part of this team though and I'm really excited about that.

wright should play at least 25 mins a game
He has a higher PER (18.54) than biedrins (18.35) and harrington (15.85). and he'll only get better the more he plays.

last night wright had the highest plus minus on the team at +5. harrington was -2 and biedrins was -15.

the only reason wright gets low minutes is because nelson is stubborn about not using rookies and he lacks creativity with his bench. any other coach in nelson's situation would have played wright all year.

one last thing: brandan wright isn't undersized, biedrins is. wright is a matchup problem on offense who can rebound and block shots and score. biedrins is a small center who gets abused by bigger guys, and gets taken out of the starting lineup against bigger teams. i'll take an undersize powerforward over an undersized center any day, especially if the powerforward has a much brighter future.

ajf
stats like PER and +/- can't really be taken into account with such a small sample size.

by kinetic on Mar 19, 2008 6:55 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

that's fine
do you think wright's PER would go down if he played more? i think it'd go up. that's why i included that stat.

by Iggy_Zohn on Mar 19, 2008 7:00 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

If anything its a good indication.
Especially if his PER, and +/- stats go up as the season goes on and as he gets more minutes. You also have to use the god ol' eye balls to really get a feel for the guy.

If he played more minutes
The effect of garbage time minutes on his beloved PER would be smaller.

He'll obviously perform much better against Leon Powe with the Celtics up by 15 and 3 minutes left than he would against KG with the Warriors up by 2 and 3 minutes left.  Yet, situation doesn't enter the PER equation.

Sure he plays some against better competition, but he plays more garbage time minutes against opponents who aren't really trying.

18 and killing it!
Quoted Text

B Wright was playing against 18-22 year olds when he played at perennial powerhouse UNC who played the best colleges in the NCAA.  A lot of those players were the same age and weight as many NBA players.  With that said, B Wright excelled.  Was the competition as good as the NBA?  No way in hell, but he played a lot of minutes vs. guys that were 250 lbs and had some good skills.  Besides, there aren't too many guys in the NBA who are even 250 lbs anyway.  Look at the Dubs starting roster.  Andris is pushing 250 lbs.  As for me when I was 19.  I played against many oh players that were 6'8-6'10 and well, when I was under the hoop, they crushed me.

by gabezgsw on Mar 19, 2008 8:35 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

He kinda stunk it up
tonight against the clips though.  It was garbage time too.  I agree he should get 10-15 minutes a game, but he is still a rookie.  We shouldn't get ahead of ourselves and say that he is our missing piece.  He COULD be.  But it's much more likely that he's not.

by Calamity on Mar 20, 2008 12:04 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

The potential is there...
and believe me it's a sh*tload of potential.  But the guy is still green and he needs to develop. If his timeline is typical then come his 3rd year he'll be spectacular.  Right now he still has that "deer in the headlights" look on his face when he plays sometimes and his body needs to develop.

And i'll agree that he needs more PT.  If there's one dude out there that's worth giving a chance to make mistakes, it's him.  Experience is the best teacher.

I pray i never have to use a gun again.

If he never got hurt, Wright might not have gotten any burn!
