New Blog: Sounder At Heart for Seattle Sounders Fans!

Well, at least the real fans will be back at The Oracle next year...

Well, one positive that comes out of the Warriors (probably) not making playoffs, beside of course the Lottery,
is that maybe the Warriors fan base will get back to normal.  Something happened this year that hasn't happened in almost a decade and half; the Warriors got bandwagon fans.  All of the sudden, after last years playoff run, it was "cool" to be a Warriors fan.  Everyone saw how much fun the real fans were having at the games and decided they wanted in on the fun.  Only they didn't know what to do because they weren't in on it last year or for the last 15!  What resulted has been a very lackluster crowd all year and one that hasn't come up in big games down the stretch as much as the Warriors themselves haven't.  Last year, everyone was WILLING the Warriors to a 9-1 finish or a first round upset.  This year, the "cool" Warriors fans at the Oracle always expected things to happen, then cheered, instead of making things happen with their cheering.

I am not saying at all the reason the Warriors are not (probably) making the playoffs is because of the fans.  Far from it.  I can write a book on my opinion about what went wrong this season.  But i certainly think a better home crowd could have helped our abysmal home record.

Looking forward to the future, I am hoping a lot of "new fans" will say, "Oh, same old Warriors" and go back to following another terrible bay area team (not the Sharks, they rollin) and not give the Warriors a second thought.  It will leave way for real fans like GSOMers to get back into the arena and show the country what rockin' the Oracle is about again.

What do y'all think?  Is this a fair assessment?

This FanPost is a submission from a member of the mighty Golden State of Mind community. While we're all here to throw up that W, these words do not necessarily reflect the views of the GSoM Crew. Still, chances are the preceding post is Unstoppable Baby!

Fans didn't come up big?
Timberwolves who were 1-21 on the road on MLK Day. 17 point 4th quarter lead vanishing into thin air @ Indiana. Loss at home to the Horribulls without Deng, Gordon, and Hinrich. Loss @ Charlotte. Loss @ home to Atlanta. Loss @ Sacramento (tough team to play at Arco, but 17 point loss in the magnitude of the race was no excuse)

Loss @ home to Denver.

Bandwagon fans or not. Fans or not. It was the team who didn't come through.

There are no positives from this loss.

Agreed
One thing I learned this year is that it doesn't matter how loud I scream, there is no correlation between how loud I scream and the warriors shooting %. The crowd was rocking at all those games above, but that didn't stop the players from getting lazy and jacking up a bunch of stupid shots when they could have easily drove to the basket.

It's kinda like...
When Dr. Dean Adell of Channel 7 news proved that there's no scientific evidence proving that if you tank up on water... it makes you full all day!

... I just scream at games cause it's fun! That, and it burn calories!

...and it's like that! Coz' that's the way it is... Dubz!

Ha! Blaming the fans????
wow, only serious kool-aid drinking, crack smokin "true Dubs" fans could ever come up with this excuse.

The Warriors are not making the play-offs NOT because so many people love them, but BECAUSE they aren't good enough.

Why does that need to be repeated so often?  Because "true Dubs fans" don't see through rational eyes.

The Warriors aren't good enough to make the play-offs in the West.  Period.

Jackson and Davis as the team's "stars" are up to the level of real stars on the contending teams.

As long as the Warriors are going to make these two guys their "best" players, they are going to remain in the second tier.

In addition...
You take a few of those bad losses away and turn them into wins, we're talking about being in the running for a Pacific Division Crown...not being the team with the best record not to make the postseason.

We might be the team with the best record not to make the postseason, but we're definitely not the best team that might miss the postseason.

Jackson suspension
Don't forget about the Jackson suspension. If he isn't suspended, or if the team wins half of those first 6, we would have the same record as Dallas.

Tix
if this means it will be easier and cheaper to get tickets to the game then I can afford losing those bandwagon fans. Everytime I've had to use craigslist or get in from those Friday student standing room only nights. Never had too much of a prob during the dun-murph era. But I welcome all who want to stay.

Dude
Get over this bandwagon idea, Warriors just got hit with the most critical loss of the season and all you think about is how the Warriors fan base will decrease next year, bandwagon this...bandwagon that....I wish warriors had more bandwagon fans to have voted Baron in the All star game and he would've finished the season on fire, just like he started it

by Warriornation08 on Apr 11, 2008 10:47 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Agreeded to Nation-8
I don't think its the bandwagon fans dragging the peformance of the Warriors.

I do believe the hardcore fans would have cheered the Warriors even though we were down 10 pts... where as the fans who didn't care just sat there and pondered if we'd get back in the game.

I find the Warriors feeding off the fans reactions and the opposing teams are very nervous at those times of play.

Yes the Warriors might have done slightly better if the crowd was a little more upbeat... but it doesn't determine the outcome of the games.

All teams will have bandwagon fans, they help fill the stadium and buy the merchandise keeping it real, everyone should have voted for Baron when it was possible.

Sigh!

GO WARRIORS!

The season is not over, 3 more games...

lets Get to 50!!!

I'm down to my last game on saturday...
After that... my season tix are gone :( (had 2 sell sonics game 2 pay bills) The way I see it through my eyes (and it's just me) I could have sworn the season just started yesterday! What a rollercoaster ride of excitement and emotion! Saturday means everything to me and my wife. It's about having a good time at a great enviornment... The Roaracle!

Next season isn't on my mind right now. Times is mad hard. Last week I was venting about how expensive tickets were when bigger issues started coming up. Have you seen how much gas costs now? It ain't cheap and my commute isn't easy...

I was at Safeway yesterday to buy some apples... fruits used to be sold at a reasonable price by the pound... now it's ยข95 cents each apple. I paid 7 bucks for a gallon of milk that used to cost me $4.50 and the same wheat bread I've been buying for years jumped 2 bucks.

I asked myself, yea- bandwagoners might not be there next season than I thought about where I stand... how many games will I be at next season? If I'm lucky- 2-3 including a GSoM night 5 and 6. We're all in the same boat as fans and people shopping for essential needs in life.

What a shame, but hey- it's life. Nothing personal.

...and it's like that! Coz' that's the way it is... Dubz!

Let's hope
that the game doesn't only mean something to you and your wife, let's hope it means something to the Warriors.

And yeah, I'm getting really sick of these diaries complaining about other FANS. Whatever happened to the "community." We can't let other people in? that's selfish. That's like wanting an underground rapper to stay underground so he is like your personal rapper, even if he isn't getting that much money.

United we stand, divided we fall.

Totally...
I was speaking in the sense of "Hey baby why are we going now that the stakes are different from thursdays game"

Man, Yesterdays loss even has me at a loss of idea's for what type of sign I wanna bring. I'm sorta lost in idea's and I don't wanna go empty handed.

BWJ's never really bother me at games. I guess I walk past the complaints I read here and just have a swell time. I've had annoying fans around me throughout the years but I'm sure I've had my share of annoyances to others around me.

See ya' Saturday!

real fans?
i guess we should go back then when "real" fans were at the arena, when at a warriors-kings game and most of the loud cheering came from kings fans...that will be better!

deal with it.  a good team will get more fans going to game.  a bad one will make it easier for so-called "real" fans to get tickets.

its your choice.  i want a good team.

(n)
suppose gsom can start selling "Bandwagoneer" shirts next year to make the "real fans" feel a little better.  I'm in for one.  So the last time I really followed the Warriors since last season was during the playoff push with Webber.  So what?!  I'm back, the Warriors are back....can't we all just get along???

by mitsmon on Apr 11, 2008 3:15 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

screw you!
I was there last night and tghroughout the year and the fans were just fine, thank you. Frickin; standing room only and packed alost 21,000 in there last night. I was there during the playoffs last year and they were fine then, too. Man, stop judging so much. Of course peopel got worries -- the nuggets went on a 22- 1 run and people were going nuts. It was electric last night and I have no complaints.

I love how people who sell their tickets, decide not to go and/or watch on TV have the gumption to criticize fans who showed up in the biggest game of the year. What a bunch of whiny crap that is. If you really wanted to be there, you would have. If seeing the Warriors in their moment of truth was a priority you wold have figured it out. I respect people whi couldn't make it for whatever reason, but if you didn't show up, don't hate on Warrior fans who did sow up. Ann who watched in horror as Denver go on a 22-1 run. And who died in the same room as the team. WTF?

So f*ck you and your propriety about what is or what is not a "real fan". Anyone trying to define what that is is a damn fool. I say, anyone who put down their hard-earned money last night, or made the effort to show up and bear witness, and hung with the team during that crushing loss was real. I don't care what came through to you over the television set, or what section you were in. Or what throwback jerseys they wore. Or who yelled defense or who didn't. You are simply trying to bane the fans Dubs' inability to solve a zone defense. WEAK.

Last night hurt, man. Really hurt. I've rooted for this team since 1974 -- through thick and thin. The fans were fine last night. They will be fine next year. Your sh*tty-ass comments make me sick. You poser.

For real.
I have been to almost every home game for the last 3 years and I have to say we still know when to cheer loudly for our team who is down by 10.  We know when to boo a bad call by the refs.  We know when to laugh at a dumb play by Pietrus.  We know NEVER EVER to do that stupid ass "wave" again.  I'd rather have more opportunities to move down and closer to the court like I used to do in years past, but I love this team, and if that means more fans, then so be it.  I love that we are good.  I love that other teams fear us.  I love that the team loves each other.  Don't let the newer fans affect your love for the Warriors.  Everyone is a new fan at some point.

by onetwocross on Apr 11, 2008 8:26 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I agree.....

I was a bandwagon hater for most of this season and have made a few posts about what a "real" fan is.
However, I have grown tired of the posts that are more about the fans than the team.
I am a Warriors fan since 1988, but that does not give me the right to pass judgement upon the behaviors and thoughts of others.....

I am a converted hater...

Ive been a Warrior of 7 years of my 12 year life span. There were NOOO real Warrior fans at the game last night. No one stood up and the crowd didnt even go wild like we all expected. Those are BANDWAGON fans

  3. championship
lets get 50 first, and see what happens!

the crowd last night
was better than the sac game but could not hold a candle from the playoff run last year.  Im pretty sure the guy who posted this diary ddnt mean to lump EVERYONE who went to that game last night together.

Its just that we had set such high standards for crowd noise and participation from last year and seeing less than that is a disappointment for those who watch on TV.

Was the crowd last night louder than LA, UTAH, DALLAS, SA, fans? YES

Was the crowd last night louder than the Dallas series of last year? NO

You nailed it...
Man it's true so many people I know jumped on the bandwagon this year it was unbelievable. I knew so many Faker fans, Heat fans and fans that like teams with winning records that all of a sudden became Warriors fans and it irritated the hell out of me. Hopefully everything goes back to normal if they don't make the playoffs like the pricing on everything at Oracle and ticket prices are ridiculous...1

by RSIZ510 on Apr 11, 2008 10:37 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

why
would a faker fan become a warriors fan if the lakers are favorites to win the championship?

by saintdee on Apr 11, 2008 11:31 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Hey, maybe...
this GSW team will inspire some of the new fans to stick around and stay with the team.  I mean, how could you not keep rooting for this team even if you just got hyped last year?  I talk to people who never paid attention to GSW before last year and they can see the same passion in this team that we do.

Plus, now the team has a direction and a foundation for the future, even if they don't make the playoffs this year.  There is finally reason to BELIEVE and I think a lot of these 'bandwagon' fans are gonna be hooked in by the last year of awesome hoops and become long-time fans like us !!

bandwagon fans in sec 120
im in sec 120 and this year the ppl who sit in front of me only went to about 5 games this season. only went to "high profile games". at the last 2 games "bandwagon" fans occupied the seats, with yesterday having the most annoying fans. there was a couple in their mid 40s standing up blocking my view, and the fans behind me every time a warrior would drive to the basket and STAND UP throughout the end of the plays. even when there was no reason to stand up they would.
i finally got fed up and told em to sit down so we can watch the game. they just smirked at me and kept doing it. stupid bandwagon fans who don't show courtesy!

Tell me you're joking...
Since when is it not ok to stand up and get pumped?  During the playoffs last year the entire Roaracle was standing and screaming during warm ups and didn't sit down until we got back to our cars...  Was that cheering at the wrong time?

Last night at the Denver game we were jumping up all the time, the girl next to me kept asking the guys in front of her to sit down...  It looked really weak, and I'm glad the guys didn't sit down.

Who needs enemies
when you've got Warriors fans ripping on other Warriors fans.

Everyone starts being a fan at some point. I'm sure people "hopped on the bandwagon" after the '75 season and stayed there for the next 33 years. The Warriors don't give out "Free Tickets and Food at Every Home Game for the Fans Who Were Fans Since 1993" promotions. The Warriors don't seem too picky about who or what supports them, so why should we?

We're all B.D.'s sidekicks. He's got like five sidekicks. We're like the Power Rangers. - Al
