Welcome to the new Golden State Of Mind and SB Nation
Way back in the fine summer days of 2007 Fantasy Junkie and I had a meeting with Trei to discuss his vision for SBN 2.0 and how to shape its UI and functionality to meet the needs of all you golden folk. Both of us walked away impressed and excited about what was about to come. Today on the eve of April 14, 2008 we're all blown away at what Trei and his teammates Pablo, Michael and Ryan have assembled. It's a testament to what excellent user centered design (or in this case fan centered design!) can bring when executed by a very hard working and creative crew.
I'll pass the mic on over to Trei for a great in-depth introduction to the new platform for you, but two things that look to be the most applicable to this particular community:
The rest of the GSoM Crew and I are obviously extremely excited about all of this. I know Trei and his team would really appreciate your feedback in the comments section, but before you do that please give them all a golden round of applause in the comments. Show them why we're the online home for the best fans in the National Basketball Association!
As we say around these parts... GSoM 2.0 is Unstoppable Baby!

Hey Golden State Of Mind,
Today is the big day. We've switched your community over to the new SB Nation sports blog platform. My name is Trei, and I'm here to help you get adjusted to the new home we've built for you. If you have questions or trouble with the new system, post a comment in this thread and myself or one of the team (lovitt, sixfoot6 or odacrem) will try to point you in the right direction.
Before we begin, I want to let you know that Golden State Of Mind is one of the first blogs in the SB Nation family to make this transition. We still consider this a beta platform, so don't be surprised if you find a few bugs or if everything isn't exactly right yet. We hope you'll take the time to report any problems you encounter at bugreport@sbnation.com.
Please take a few minutes to read about what's new below. But if you just can't wait to jump in, here are some quick things to check out:
- Sign up for your SB Nation network account and claim your old blog accounts
- Once you're logged in, press your Z key in any thread with new comments
- Explore your dashboard and setup your profile
- Read the guide to the new FanPost editor
- Install the FanShot bookmarklet and post videos to Golden State Of Mind from YouTube or images from Flickr
- Click the "Rec" button on posts and comments to help other people find the good stuff.
What Has Changed
SB Nation Network Accounts - the Big Change
Readers across all of our blogs told us they wanted one account to use on every SB Nation blog. To make this work, we're requiring that everyone create a new SB Nation network account. In most cases you should be able to keep your old username, but a few of you may have to choose something new, since every other community in SB Nation will be going through this same transition. We tried to be as fair as possible in deciding who gets to keep which name, using a formula that takes into account length of membership and frequency of activity.
We want to make it as easy as possible for you to participate on all of our blogs, but we don't want to encourage everyone to start visiting rival team blogs and initiating flame wars. To maintain friendly communities we ask that you explicitly join each blog in order to participate. It's a two-click process, but it does means accepting each blog's community guidelines. Just as you join each blog individually, you can be banned on each blog individually.
You can claim old accounts from multiple SB Nation blogs, and your new username will be retroactively attached to all your old comments and diaries. So now you'll be able to access all your writings from your single profile page... like magic.
To get started, click here to claim your old blog accounts and create a new SB Nation network account.
FanPosts (the Section Formerly Known as Diaries)
We changed their name. Why? Because we took this major upgrade as an opportunity to leave behind some vocabulary that never made much sense for a sports blog. SB Nation is the network of, by and for fans, and these are the blog posts we make. So we call them FanPosts. When you're at a bar telling someone to check out your online sports opinions, you don't have to suggest they read your diary.
FanPosts are displayed differently on the homepage - we include your avatar to give more credit for the time you spend writing great posts. The new post editor has a WYSIWYG view that provides easy formatting. It also auto-saves drafts so you don't have to worry about losing your work when you compose a post within the web browser. And you can now associate teams, players and games with your posts: these tools promote your FanPosts on our new team, player and game pages - across the entire network.
The new system does not work like the old diary editor. For example, in HTML mode the new editor doesn't auto-create a new paragraph from two line breaks. But it does offer a whole array of new features. Look for the blinking help button on the right side of the FanPost editor for quick tips, and take a look at our full guide to writing FanPosts on the new platform.
IMPORTANT - if you write your posts in Microsoft Word or some other off-line editor, you will get the most reliable behavior if you cut & paste your post into the HTML view of the FanPost editor. And if you do that, remember to wrap <p></p> tags around each paragraph so your text doesn't run together.
Visual Redesign
This one is probably the most obvious change of all. Like other major websites working to improve readability for their audience, we've adopted a fixed-width layout optimized for the 1024 x 768 resolution used by the majority of Golden State Of Mind and SB Nation network users. Use the switcher below the user menu if you prefer the wider layout designed for 1280 monitors. We've introduced a top navigation bar with quick links into old and new sections of the site. We also polished a few edges, made some things larger, others smaller and moved a few boxes here and there. More changes and adjustments to come.
Search
We've completely replaced the old search engine with a new one. We're excited to make it easier to find old posts and comments, but we've only taken our first pass on the tools we're offering. We're focused on making search even better than what you had before, so please know that we're aware search is missing key features and we're working on it.
What's New
Schedule, Scores, Stats and Roster
Golden State Of Mind now has all the basic information about the Golden State Warriors and hundreds of other teams. During games you'll see a regularly updated line score, and as the season progresses we'll track team stat totals and leaders. This is just our first step, so look for us to publish more detailed and archival stats in the future. The best part about all this sports data is that we've integrated it directly into the blog so. We now have special pages that aggregate all blog posts written about games, players and teams.
Recommending FanPosts
Some writing deserves more attention and more conversation. If you want to bump a FanPost up to the top and keep it there for awhile, just click the 'Rec' link under the body of the post. When a FanPost receives enough recommendations it will make the recommended list.
Auto-refreshing Comments
You no longer need to refresh the page to see new comments. If you're logged in, new comments will automatically appear on the page every few seconds. When you post a comment, the page will not refresh either. If you want to quickly cycle through all the new comments, you can press the C key on your keyboard. Unmark a new comment after you've read it with the X key. And use the Z key if you want to umark comments as you're cycling through them.
As you use these shortcuts to cycle through comments, press the R key to reply to the current comment. All these helpful keyboard shortcuts are listed at the top of each comments section for reference.
Recommending Comments
Now you can reward those folks who take the time to look up stats and make smart arguments in the comments. Next to each comment there is an 'actions' link that you can click to find the recommend and flag options.
Flagging Comments
To help the moderators on a site, we've built-in tools that let you flag comments that are spam, trolling or just plain inappropriate. Only moderators can see those flags.
FanShots
Many members of the community just want to post that one link, video, photo or quote, but don't need a full FanPost. We've got you covered: FanShots let you share YouTube videos, Flickr or PhotoBucket photos, quotes from articles, portions of chat transcripts, top 5 lists and simple links. If it's a video or image we'll put a thumbnail on the homepage when you post it.
For those of you who are experienced internet hunter-gatherers of Golden State Warriors material, install the bookmarklet onto the links bar of your browser and share FanShots with the community from wherever on the web you find that killer quote or photo.
Archives
It's much easier to find that post about a certain deadline trade or prospect retro feature. You can browse by year and month.
Avatars
Upload an image so folks can see your custom avatar on your profile, your FanPosts, and all your comments.
Network Profiles
Now that we have unified SB Nation network accounts, your profile will be your central hub for all of your activity on any blogs where you are a member.
Network bar
The top bar stays with you on all SB Nation blogs. It's a quick way to login and logout. When you're logged in, you'll see your avatar and screen name which links to your profile. The icon to the right leads to your Dashboard area where you can edit your settings, profile, account details and any FanPosts or FanShots you've published. As we add more blogs to the new SB Nation network, the My Blogs menu will be a handy way to navigate between the blogs you've joined.
-------
There are plenty more small changes and additions we've made, so please take a careful look around and explore this new system. We appreciate your patience and hope you'll help us improve the new platform for this and all the other SB Nation blogs.
And in case you missed it, you'll want to start by claiming your old blog accounts and creating a new SB Nation network account.
This FanPost is a submission from a member of the mighty Golden State of Mind community. While we're all here to throw up that W, these words do not necessarily reflect the views of the GSoM Crew. Still, chances are the preceding post is Unstoppable Baby!

Usability suggestions
Fortunately, Mavsmoneyball is still using the old format, similar to the previous format here, so I can compare formats. One thing I liked about the old format is that each main post has a colored title background bar. It made it very easy on the eyes to spot each post when scrolling down the page.
thanks for mentioning this!
We've tried to adopt a newspaper style to make headlines jump out, but there are definitely a few things about the new entry layout that we'll be changing in future updates.

Well at least
we get to keep our old screen names. As long as we also get the same great content that was on the old GSOM, I'm cool with it.

thecitygirl, did you mean to create two accounts?
We tried to design the sign up process to make it easy to pull old comments and diaries into a new username for folks who want a name change. If you'd like to tie your warriorgirl history to your new name, please let us know.

jeremy, unfortunately not.
As was hopefully made clear when you rolled over into AN 2.0 in January, your new account lets you access all the SB Nation blogs with one login, and maintain them from a central profile and dashboard.
We may offer a way to choose a sig files per community, but single screen name login was a very highly requested feature designed to make things simpler.
And hey, If you'd like us to change your screen name, drop us a line at bugreport @ sbnation.

More usability suggestions
On each user comment, there is an "actions" link that when clicked, turns into a "Flag" link, and "Rec" link. However, if I click "actions" for my own posted comment, nothing appears. Why is this? Why have an "actions" link at all?
Design-wise, I find it inconsistent that on the Home page, the box with the Welcome Guide/New FanPost/etc. is on the left column and the page's contents are in the middle, but for all other pages, that box is on the right and the page's contents start from the left.
When trying to create a new FanPost, I get the warning that my browser (Firefox 1.5) isn't supported for the FanPost editor. What else doesn't work with Firefox 1.5?
On a positive note, I just saw xcoma's comment appear while preparing this comment. That was pretty cool. The 'C' key to scroll to it worked, and the 'Z' key to mark it read worked too. I can't wait to try that during an open thread on the next game.
Ooh, and thecitygirl's comments just appeared too. That's pretty neat.
The R key worked for you?
It doesn't seem to work for me. For me, the 'R' key defaults to Firefox's text search feature. No biggie, since I can click the reply link anyway.
by IQofaWarrior on Apr 14, 2008 12:25 AM PDT up reply actions
oh
I normally turn that feature off on firefox. I think it should work if you decide to turn that off
I see now
The R key only works for newly added live comments that are not yet marked as read. If the comment is already read, the R doesn't do anything. If the comment is not yet read, the R key starts a reply.

yeah, Z gets addictive
We've heard a lot of users say that they try to use Z on other non-SB Nation blogs, with a frustrating lack of success ;)
I'm one of four guys who built SB Nation 2.0. We are like the Borg, but friendly.
Nice little distraction.
Hey, at least this takes my mind off the stupid Rockets getting spanked by the Chicken Nuggets. Change is good.
Still more observations
When a new user comment is automatically added to the thread, a little window pops up in the bottom right corner letting me know that someone had commented. But if I happen to be in another program, and then I click back to Firefox, I won't see that box, so I won't know that a new comment had appeared.
That's true.
I usually have a number of threads open at once in different tabs. When I switch back to a thread, the first thing I do is hit my C or Z key to see if anything new has popped in since I was last paying attention.
Does that help? I've got a lot of work / email / cellphone alerts pinging me all the time anyway, so I'd rather check when it suits me ;)
I'm one of four guys who built SB Nation 2.0. We are like the Borg, but friendly.
Coincidentally enough
that's exactly the solution I was thinking of just a moment ago: Clicking C or Z to see if anything new came in.

It takes about 18 seconds for me in Firefox 2, and substantially faster in Safari and FF3. But that thread also contains about 4mb of images loaded from external sources like Photobucket. Last suggestion of the night
In the home page, in the schedule section, the Next 5 Games should be listed with the next game first. Better yet, maybe the section should be in chronological order like this (with the same existing column alignments):
---------- Last 5 ----------
@ Memphis Fri 04/04 W 117 - 86
@ New Orleans Sun 04/06 L 96 - 108
Sacramento Tue 04/08 W 140 - 132
Denver Thu 04/10 L 105 - 114
Los Angeles Clippers Sat 04/12 W 122 - 116
---------- Next Game ----------
@ Phoenix Mon 04/14 7:05 PM PDT
Seattle Wed 04/16 7:30 PM PDT
If you want to keep the current chronological order, then I think you should at least put an indicator, like a star, next to the next upcoming game, similar to how a star is shown for our team in the standings.
I think there is a bug with our roster schedule....
The order should be displayed as:
Next 5 Games
4/14
4/16
etc
Last 5 Games
4/12
4/11
etc

Like the new features... not a big fan of the SB interface. Oh well, we've got a long off-season to get used to it.
Hope Mully and Nellie work some magic to bring back most of the W's that we've gotten to know and love.
woh
Wow, the site looks great. I'm sure this took a lot of work so great job everybody. Will take a little time to get used to the new functionality though. Bigger avatars would be great or only when we click on the image.
Feature suggestion
The live comments is definitely a killer feature. What about about having a live home page? I think it would be nice if the home page automatically updated #of new comments in the posts and fanposts. It's a logical extension of the live comments feature.
Feature Suggestion - Avatar Hover
Since the avatars are small, how about on hover of an avatar, show the full size pic from the profile? Then when we scroll off the avatar, it goes back to normal.
Very Cool
It will take me a little while to get used to tht echanges but it looks like a pretty sweet setup.
Question
Is there any way to still post with your full size Webpins? They added so much character to the site. I would be pretty bummed if all we had are the impossible to see avatars.
Webpins
Yea I would like that too, it seems to be ignoring mine. I guess the only way to do it would be to attach a picture to every comment - but that's a big pain.

Yeah, webpins are a must.
I so love that subjects are not required anymore and that we can use one username for the entire SB network.
I don't like the fact that ads are featured in the prominent spaces on each blog, but that's okay.

WebPins
Just to be clear I wanted to re-post this. Please allow a way to have images in your sig. Most people here are used to a format that looks like this and would be sad if they weren't able to post with webpins.

Web pin suggestions
I can’t believe I still miss everyone’s web pins. I really hope the site designers put that in. I’ve been thinking about some of the problems with adding them in. Right now, people can use the same account to visit any sbnation blog. If web pins were available, then bloggers from other sports teams who choose to comment here would end up showing their web pins here. We could end up with SF Giants or Oakland A’s web pins on a Warriors blog. That would ruin the atmosphere we have here of supporting our Warriors. Conversely, having Warriors web pins show up on a Giants blog would ruin the Giants atmosphere there.
So my suggestion is that if you guys add web pins into the site design, make it so that people can have one for each blog. That way, we can show our support for multiple teams.
Also, I think you should make it a user configurable option of whether or not to display web pins, just like the option for displaying avatars. That’s good for those who like to keep comments looking compact and organized.
Thanks for your patience, we're getting there
HTML is not disabled in signatures, but including images has been. We had serious issues with performance in big comment threads on large blogs with all the images loading. We introduced avatars to address this need, but clearly we still have work to do with that before it meets the needs of communities like GSoM. We’ll be rolling out some changes in the future.
I'm one of four guys who built SB Nation 2.0. We are like the Borg, but friendly.
No worries
I’m appreciative that you’re actually responsive. For example, someone requested that the FanShots section on the main page be moved up next to the FanPosts section so that people can see it, and it actually got done. Now THAT’s customer service.

There’s a few things FJ and I can control on the backend like some of the placement of the widgets on the side columns. Just keep the suggestions coming (in here preferably) and we’ll try to keep this thing evolving quickly.
Trei, Pablo, Michael, and Ryan have put together a fantastic system with a rich feature set that I think can really make this community a better place. Let us know how we can make it more friendly and usable and we’ll do our best.

feature suggestions for posts/comments
I like the new design. Good Job.
One thing that bugs me about the old format and the new format is the way the new posts/comments are displayed. I would prefer the latest comments to be displayed at the top, and older posts/comments continually get pushed down. So the auto-refresh is nice, but having the latest comments on top would make it far more user friendly IMO. Could these be a user option to select?
We talked about this a bit.
By far the most common standard for blogs is to have the entry at the top, with comments proceeding down chronologically, so we’ve stayed with that convention. Only a couple of users have requested bottom up comments. We may add this as a user option if more users make the request, but we’d likely need to require that auto-updates be disabled in such a mode, since new comments would push the down the comment you’re currently reading. It might be tricky.
In the meantime, I use the Z or C key as a user-friendly way to jump down to new comments – no need to scroll.
I'm one of four guys who built SB Nation 2.0. We are like the Borg, but friendly.
Another UI suggestion
In the home page, in the fanpost section, the new comment count is displayed in bold, so it’s very easy to see which fanpost has unread comments. But in the fanshots section, new comments are not in bold. Can you make the new count in that section bold as well?
yep
We’re aware of this inconsistency. Thanks!
I'm one of four guys who built SB Nation 2.0. We are like the Borg, but friendly.
Old Site
There was a home grown and funky vibe that the last site had, something unique and very community oriented. This feels soooooo much more generic and has lost some of the niche flavor it used to have. It feels like a template (which it is) and a franchise front.
Ironically, it reflects the change in the demo at Warriors games as well, as the popularity of the product grew, the heterogeneity has led to greater homogeneity. Such is the commercial cost of success.
Loving that screen name!
Appreciate the thoughts. I think that “home grown and funky vibe” is really at the core of GSoM. That’s our goal. I know those big web pins on the left side under “Words to Live By” don’t really fit aesthetically with the rest of the site, but we stuck with them so we hopefully wouldn’t lose our “Unstoppable Baby!” juice.
Any ideas on what else we can do to make this new front get back to our original flava? Thanks.
by Atma Brother ONE on Apr 26, 2008 9:40 AM PDT up reply actions

Success on the web is so hard to formulate and predict. If it was so easy, everyone would be building something viral and innovative and retire early. But one key component to creating something that has some juice is to create something that gives people the option to make it their own. Webpins certainly fit the bill and while I’m sure that they ate up a lot of space, it was something that set the site apart from others. Tony PSD’s work was out front and it was fresh. The webpin phenomenon has a lot in common with tagging as an urban artform, especially in this environment.
I think the die has been cast and your site is what it is, but I would highly recommend that you find some way to allow each individual posters personality to come through much in the same way the webpins used to achieve. Identity is the center of any community and if people here can can contiue to indentify with both the sit itself and how they appear within it, GSOM will continue to thrive.

I don’t know if the site maintainers still read this post, but here’s another suggestion for the home page. In one of my earlier posts, I complained about a lack of a background color bar to clearly identify each main story. Now, some of the main stories, which are really fanshots, have a blue rectangular background containing the posts, while other main stories like the Open Threads don’t. Furthurmore, the format is different in each case. For the main Fanshots, the poster, time, and comment count are all at the bottom, but for the Open Threads, the poster and tmie are at the top, and the comment count is centered at the bottom.
To make the main stories more consistent, can you make all main posts formatted like the Fanshots? It makes the main stories column more consistent, and it would solve my complaint about not being able to identify each story at a glance.
a good suggestion
We’re in the process of redesigning the way that stories and FanPosts look, and the changes should address most of your concerns.
I'm one of four guys who built SB Nation 2.0. We are like the Borg, but friendly and with better features.
My god
you actually still keep up on this thread. Thank you. I’ll put forth my best critical eye when the new design takes effect.
