JRich is white hot

29 points, 7 boards, 2 ast, 3 blk, 1 stl tonight v. Philly. Ouch. Timing is exquisite too -- talk about twisting the knife. I still think it was a good trade, but he definitely seems to have fully regained his pre-injury form. Good for you, JRich. Now next year try to lead your team to the playoffs...

False.

If we weren’t lottery bound it would just be like whatever. We are and will continue to be better without him.

Uhhhh

...but we are lottery bound

Nellie said we were better last year. Said we could have used JRich this year.

I’m just sayin…

Sleepy,

I expected much more sarcasm in this FanShot. Your right though, it does still sting even for those of us who liked the trade. JRich was always a good guy and fun to watch.

It will fell better in a couple months when we re-sign AB and Monta. Even better when Wright makes his first All-Star team (fingers crossed).

"I still think it was a good trade"

Hi Sleepy, Jason was a big part of the reason we made the push into the playoffs last year and look how this current crew did this year? It’s foolish to tear apart a team that has finally become playoff material . Look at the result.
What was Jason’s season line versus the players we got or kept to chase him off? I haven’t checked it but my guess is he did pretty good in comparision?

by Skeptic con Urquell on Apr 17, 2008 5:59 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

To be fair...

I think you have to add up B-Wright, Monta, AB and Buike over the next few years to start to have an idea of what we got in return for Jason. In fact it’s very hard to make a fair assessment of this trade. Yeah, if there were no financial repercussions it would be a no brainer to keep J-Rich, but unfortunately it would have really limited our options this offseason. The fact is that this team was not allowed to go into the luxury tax (must owners avoid it like the plague) and we would have been deep into the luxury tax to keep all those guys. Considering that we were never a championship contender with last years roster it seems like very reasonable management, given the situation.

These guys have to make tough choices with big dollars. It’s easy for us to spend other peoples money and demand a contender every year but it’s not that easy.

The time to worry about it should have been next year. The fact is we were one big player away from beating Utah in the 2nd round. We shoulda kept Jason and looked for a way to get that one good big man for this past season instead of giving up and starting over.

Too late

If we waited another year we would most likely lose out on Monta or AB… maybe both. Unfortunately with the CBA the way it is you really have to plan at least one year in advance to avoid a financial mess.

It is very rare to get immediate salary relief when trading away a player with a contract the size of Jason’s. It is much more common to get an expiring contract in the same amount as the outgoing player. If we didn’t trade J-Rich we would be entering the offseason with Monta and AB as free agents (maybe Baron too) and still having Jason (or another player with an equal but expiring contract) on the books for next year would push us into the luxury tax next season after we re-sign all the kids. With ownership wanting to avoid paying the tax, I’m sure you can understand why it needed to be done last summer (or at the latest at this seasons trade deadline).

“If we didn’t trade J-Rich we would be entering the offseason with Monta and AB as free agents”
Yeah but we’d still have Jason and be in the playoffs looking to go into the third round this time. It’s called getting experience and building momentum . His 3 point shooting would’a been a big plus and I’m sure he wouldn’t have let us lose the first 6 games or collapse in the stretch run.
Worrying about paying Monta and Dris doesn’t work cause if they get as good as Jason they’ll want big money too so why make the change? Develop and keep the guys that are reliable and productive and make a stand. If we’d kept Jason and somehow got one tough big man we’d be in much better shape now.

Woulda coulda shoulda

First of all, welcome back, Skep! How the hell are you?

Secondly: woulda coulda shoulda. There’s no way you can say the warriors woulda made the playoffs - much less the third round!!! - if they still had JRich. That’s what known as “pure conjecture.”

What you can say for sure is this:

1. The Warriors had a much better record this year than they did last year (six games better, to be precise).
2. Charlotte was marginally worse this year than they were last year (one game worse, to be precise).
3. Monta blossomed into an true star this year—#25 in the NBA, and best player on the team, according to Bill Simmons.
4. Monta likely wouldn’t have gotten the minutes necessary to blossom if he were backing up JRich.
5. Monta is six years younger than JRich, and /at least as good./ (I think he’s marginally better, but it’s close)
6. As OlympicMike says, the salary relief alone is going to be a huge factor in our ability to re-sign our two best young players: both of them a mere 22 years old, and both Top 8-9 in the NBA at their positons. Brandan Wright, potentially the best PF we’ve seen in these parts since Webber, was pure gravy.
7. OlympicMike is the Barack Obama of GSoM. He speaks the truth!

Anyway, welcome back to the jungle.

Hi Sleepy, That's what teams do. Make the playoffs, get some experience and come back next year and go farther. Dumping an important part of the crew is a step backwards. There's always a new youngster coming along so we'll never get anywhere with that approach. I'm sure we could have added a post presence and worked on our defense a bit and moved into the third round. The loss of Jason took away our momentum, I think the guys saw what hapened to him and thought this organization doesn't deserve the effort they put out in that magic season. I dint see the same fire in the end this year. There's more to winning than stats. Monta cherry picks and flys around like tinkerbell but he don't inspire his team mates to be better like Jason did.

Hi Sleepy. That's what teams do. Make the playoffs, get better , come back next season and go farther. Dumping a key player is a step backwards. There's always youngsters coming along so we'll never get anywhere with that approach.
I have no doubt that we could have gotten to the 3 rd round if we'd kept jason and added a post presence and worked on our basic skills a bit. The utah series last year was closer than the scores indicate . I dint see the desire in our game this season that we had last year. I think the guys saw what happened to Jason and realized this organization din't deserve the effort that they put out in that magical stretch run and dallas series last year. There's more to winning that stats. sure monta cherry picks and flys thru the air like tinkerbell but I don't think he inspires his team mates to play better like jason did. I don't see the same passion.

D'oh

Are you sure you’re typing in the correct box? A couple tips:

• You should type the body of your post in the big white box directly below the formatting palette with the B I S etc.
• Also, quoting is way easier now on the new site. Just select all the text you want to put in a quote box and click once on the big quotation marks (to the right of the S).

As for the content of your post, I can read enough to make out the following

I have no doubt that we could have gotten to the 3rd round if we’d kept jason

Sigh — you should have just stopped writing right there. You have no doubt that we could have knocked off two of the Western powerhouses — all eight of whom are bigger, much better defensively, and much better teams overall than we are? By having a guy who’s neither big nor good defensively, and who plays the same same position as our best player? C’mon, don’t be silly. Comments like that make any kind of serious dialogue pointless. Anything’s possible, of course. It’s certainly possible we could have improved by the 3 games we needed to make the playoffs. But winning two playoff series in the West would have been a HUGE longshot, with or without Richardson.

Meanwhile, unless it got cut off, you failed to address any of the points made be me or OlympicObama. Which of Monta or Biedrins (or both) would you like to see us cut loose this offseason to pay for the 3/$40+M remaining on JRich’s contract?

one more time

see if this works now? That’s what teams do. Make the playoffs, get better , come back next season and go farther. Dumping a key player is a step backwards. There’s always youngsters coming along so we’ll never get anywhere with that approach.

Really?
That’s what teams do. Make the playoffs, get better , come back next season and go farther.

Yeah, like the T’Wolves did all those years with KG, and Memphis did all those years with Gasol. It is not a guarantee to go farther than you did the year before. There have been many teams who have leveled off as a one and done playoff team. Let’s be honest, we were very fortunate to get the matchup that we did last year in the first round. We could have easily not made the second round and there is little chance (25-30% tops IMO) we would have made it out of the first round this year much less the second.
