Bill Simmons' MVP rankings (#1-47)

25. Monta Ellis
The most valuable under-25 free agent to hit the market since Tracy McGrady. Even though he's restricted, the Grizzlies should pull out every possible stop to land him or that franchise should be disbanded. It's that simple.

20. Baron Davis
Ran out of gas down the stretch … and that's an understatement. He's like a starting pitcher who can give you 175 quality innings every year, but for every inning after that, his ERA will be more than 6.00. Why do I feel like he's headed for the Clippers next season? He seems like a logical guy for them to acquire right as I'm debating whether to renew my tickets, followed by me renewing and Davis deciding to retire and become a movie producer full-time three weeks into the season. Good times! Count me in!

He compliemented Monta

with that comment. You rip the guy but dont realize he said Memphis SHOULD offer him the moon…He didnt say Monta would tkae it or the Warriors wouldnt pay him. Just that Monta is a stud….all he said. Goodness.

Jack was 30th

You forgot to include Stack Jack who was number 30…

30. Stephen Jackson
A reader named Tim from British Columbia sums it up best: “Do you think Stephen Jackson is the best NBA player to have ever discharged a firearm in a public place?”

It shows that if we can find a way to get a decent PF, this team is going to have an absolutely stacked starting lineup.

I can see the grizz

offering Monta a boatload of cash this offseason. Monta would probably accept the deal too because he’d be the 1st scoring option there and be closer to home.

But of course Mullin will match it so he’s staying.

not a chance

rudy gay is entrenched as the franchise guy and option #1 there. gay and monta together would be a nice start for them, but i think the w’s will match whatever memphis offers.

dubs

will keep monta and baron, and hopefully we let go of pietrus or harrington, so we can get brand, check out a starting 5 this year if that happens: Baron, Monta, Jackson, Brand, Biedrins. now that would be scary.

by Dub4lif3 on Apr 18, 2008 12:41 PM PDT   0 recs

sorry but

getting brand is not as easy as simply getting rid of harrington and pietrus

in case you missed it

least valuable player award comments

397. Marco Belinelli
Let’s make a pact: Nobody is allowed to get excited about a summer league performance ever again. OK? We good on this?

Not sure what that really means. Not entirely Marco’s fault Nellie didnt give him more of a chance to sink or swim. Maybe Marco was that bad in practice though

Bill Simmons....

is one of the best sports writers out there. He is basically just like you and I. A huge sports fan and tells things like he sees them, only he has a better sense of humor than most of us, and is much better written than most of us. That is why he gets paid. And those rankings are actually not bad what so ever. I look forward to every Bill Simmons article or mailbag that ESPN gives us

I disagree.

I’m glad he put LaMarcus Aldridge on the list, but leaving out Brandon Roy, who was the key to our season this year in Portland, is inexcusable.

Bingo, bango, bongo!

He cant list everybody...

I mean, im sure he knows about Brandon Roy. But it is impossible to list absolutely everybody. Just cause he leaves someone off, doesnt mean he doesnt know his stuff. He just doesnt want to write about every person on this list.

i agree with you about Brandon Roy being the key to your season, but he just isnt an exciting pick for the non basketball followers. You may grill me for this, but the people that are on this list are either really, really bad, had an unbelievable follow up to a not so good season (Roy was good last year, and his jump this year had something to do with Aldridge, so it wasnt that dramatic of a jump), or they have to be just incredibly fascinating to watch. Although Roy is pretty damn good, he isnt someone you would pay money to watch play. He is not the “sexy” pick that most people would make.

yeah

Simmons is great once your sift through all the Bostonian bias in what’s supposed to be a general sports article. I’m pretty sure if he met Tom Brady, he’d ask to have Brady sign a poster of him that Simmons kisses every night before he goes to bed.

simmons sux

his take is always obvious, stories are never well thought out, is often provocative for the sake of being provocative, and he’s one of the greatest perpetrators of east coast bias living on the planet today, besides, espn is basically a site for men/boys to read about the latest sports soap operas, unsubstantiated hearsay and get their man crushes on. spare me.
