Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

Ready for Smartball?

This diary is being written at the beginning of the fourth quarter of the dallas game 040208. The W's are down by 22 after Kid had an easy layup to begin the fourth quarter.

I'm sick of no defense. It disgusts me. A modicum of D would be sufficient. But no D? Really!?

I think NELLY may have run his course. This is his M.O. He rebuilds teams but can't win the big ones. Nelly has one of the largest, if not the absolute largest, coaching trees in the NBA. But his apostles now preach the importance of D. And I see why. On TNT the other night, when C-WEBB was there, he said in his first game NELLY wrote 125 on the board saying, "If we score this many points we will win". Is that it!!!?

Small ball is becoming lame ball very quickly. Small ball works in certain game time situations but is not meant to be sustained for an entire game let alone an entire season.

How long can the underdog mentality last? Being an underdog sucks! It means your thought to lose. If you win enough games as an underdog you become a favorite. Favorites win most of the time. Underdogs lose most of the time. Underdogs are long run losers duh.

I understand that the season is by no means over and that I may be overreacting, but these last two servings got me all riled up.

So the question is ... Has NELLYBALL run it's course? and. Is it time for SMARTBALL?

Also, if the W's somehow win this game, then forget this as garbage because NELLY is obviously awesome.

This FanPost is a submission from a member of the mighty Golden State of Mind community. While we're all here to throw up that W, these words do not necessarily reflect the views of the GSoM Crew. Still, chances are the preceding post is Unstoppable Baby!

There
Is no intensity anymore. With tha players and in Oracle. thats why Nellyball aint workin no more. Last year tha warriors fed off of energy and u saw how well small ball worked. But now its jus not tha same.

Theres been energy at the oracle
but the players don't seem to respond to it at all. They always come out flat at home and rely on ridiculous comebacks to win.

There
has been, but not like last year. It jus seems different. When I went to games last year, there was so much animosity against tha other teams and tha refs, and for me that was beautiful. Because pre bandwagoners fans like me felt like tha league and everyone was against us, so we showed that in tha crowd. Now its like a lot of these cats forgot it. New fans dont bring that same intensity, because all they know is tha end of last year.

second that.
I've been to 37 home games this year and yes my lady and myself are first time season ticket holders, we got that plan for season tickets and playoffs last year, but there has not been a lack of energy at the Roaracle. The LA game was loudest game I've ever been to and it wasn't because fakers were cheering.

What we're missing recently is
teamball. We have evolved into a one-on-one, I-will-score-on-other-team ball. No ball movement. No trust in each other to make team plays. No tic-tac-toe plays. No swarming, pestering, piranha style team defense.

Hurts
my heart right now. Two nights in a row and no effort from anyone. Monta might have scored a lot but there is no defensive energy, no heart from the becnch. This team needs to make a significant trade in the offseason.
I love the Bay Area.

MONTA
seems to be the guy that some other player has a career night on. There are two sides of the ball. And he's not alone. BARON gives up huge nights as well. The bigs on the other team are expected to score, but when DUHON has a career night, PARKER goes off, and TERRY kills us, then thats on our backcourt. That is why BARON is not an all-star.

by BiedrinsORBust on Apr 2, 2008 9:16 PM PDT up reply actions

Thank you...
for pointing out the obvious reasons why Baron is NOT an all-star. It's the same argument I gave earlier in the season as to why the "MVP" chants are ridiculous. MVP's don't let their teams start 0-6 (0-4 at home) or lose games to Chicago, Minnesota etc. at home, or allow their team to get blown out on the road in the middle of a playoff chase.

I'm tired of the recaps saying "Baron showed up tonight." He is our point guard who has forgotten how to pass the ball. His assist numbers are plummeting and our team is playing horribly. He needs to worry about getting others involved before trying to score.

Proclamations...
Kobe just let his Lakers lose AT HOME to Charlotte and Memphis back to back in the middle of a playoff race.  Does that mean he can't be MVP?

Chris Paul let the Hornets lose AT HOME to Minny and Indiana.

LBJ doesn't work in his teammates so much as he's constantly triple teamed and sometimes throws the ball to an wide open man.

Don't get worked up over an MVP trophy, be like KG.  Also, try to look at things from the perspective of other teams.  They're not really that much better off.

I understand...
your argument - I mean those teams also lost to the Warriors at home! Listen I'm not bashing on Baron - I'm just saying that those Warrior fans who chant "MVP" are also the same fans who write diaries on this blog about how Stephen Jackson is the most important member of this team and the media perpetuates that belief (maybe rightly so) by pointing out that we were 1-6 without him to start the year. So how can Baron be the MVP if he isn't even the most important Warrior.

BTW -  on paper the Warriors have abetter supporting cast.

Keep in mind...
You're discussing this with a man who doesn't believe MVP/Heisman/etc. mean jack squat.  Heck, even championship in college doesn't mean much of anything... but I digress.

People who chant MVP are silly no matter where they are.  Even if they were chanting MVP for Jordan in his heyday... silly.  Once somebody does something other people think is cool ("Hey, did you hear the Lakers were chanting MVP the other day?"  "Yeah, it was crazy, we should totally do that next time we go to the game"), they imitate it.  It's the human way.  We imitate way worse than monkeys.  They've done research on that stuff.

Exactly...
but at least the fans chanting MVP for Kobe are relevant. I mean he is in consideration every year.

I see your point and you are right but...
Kobe, who many people believe should be MVP, did 'let' his team lose at home to Memphis and Charlotte - similar to Baron 'letting' his team lose at home to Chicago and Minnesota.

nelly's a good coach
He wins games and gets teams to the playoffs.  After 13 years of losing and one year of playing above expectations, you'd think a winning record and playoff contention in the tightest playoff race ever in the toughest conference would get a passing grade.  You don't go from 13 years of losing to championship in two seasons in this conference.  Not now anyway.  They're not going to have the same team next year, so we'll see how it goes.

It sucks seeing them lose.  Especially when they're playing for something.  It tears my heart out.  But, at least they're playing for something.  And when they make the playoffs this year, it will be even sweeter.

aw, c'mon
where's that "we believe" spirit that I've heard so much about?  Heck, where's the "unstoppable, baby" spirit?

by exl on Apr 2, 2008 9:28 PM PDT up reply actions

it's still there bro
i still believe we CAN make the playoffs, but just being realistic here and there's nothing wrong with that. we got 7 games left i believe, and if we can AT LEAST go 6-1, then hopefully that could secure us a spot.

The stars must allign for the Dubs to make it now
They have no chance in a tie breaker with Dallas or Denver according to ESPN.  This means they must finish a game ahead of either to get in.  Conceivably, I see Dallas finishin at 3-4, which would mean the Warriors must finish at 6-1 to get in. Also, I see the Nuggets finishing at 4-3, which would mean the Warriors must finish at 6-1 to finish ahead of Dallas, and 6-1 to finish ahead of the Nuggets.  They have to win 2 out of 3 against the Nuggets, Suns and Hornets to and sweep the Griz, Sonics, Clips and Queens. Looks like a big challenge.
I love the Bay Area.

I think they can do it

they do
and it's very annoying. Great, we lead the league in double digit comebacks, but that means we were down by double digits. My argument goes back to the underdog paradox.

Exhausted
I agree w/ KennySeagle.  I think exhaustion is the primary factor.  Last year you had, what, half a season of Nellie Ball -- not to mention the nothing-to-lose attitude that always makes a team loose.  This year, it's been up-and-down basketball the whole season.  It's going to take its toll.  And it has.

Today on KNBR, Fitz said that the W's should play very loose tonight, because it was not necessarily a must win.  I listened to his logic, but I still don't get it.  He's a sharp guy, and he knows his basketball.  But, to make the playoffs now, the W's are going to have to find energy that simply does not seem there anymore.  Who knew not paying Pietrus would kill them so badly down the stretch.  Another body on the bench would be so very nice.
