Who do you want out? Playoffs

I watched most of the Maverick/ Hornets game tonight and began to feel better about the Warriors missing the playoffs. Seeing as I have to hear all about the Maverick's everyday and see Dirk jersey's everywhere, I also get crap from all my friends that the W's missed the playoffs, I would feel SO much better if the maverick's got knocked out in five.

The other team I really want to drop is the Lakers. If those two teams get knocked out of the playoffs I will be able to forget the Warriors downfall and this cloud hanging over my head will dissipate much more quickly. Is there any team that could get knocked out to lift you out of your depression? Or are you more hardcore then I and nothing can console you?

This FanPost is a submission from a member of the mighty Golden State of Mind community. While we're all here to throw up that W, these words do not necessarily reflect the views of the GSoM Crew. Still, chances are the preceding post is Unstoppable Baby!

I want the Lakers to destroy every team they run into, especially the Jazz.

then get swept by Boston in the Finals.

+1

Though I’d love to see the Celtics/Lakers finals go 7. If ESPN/TNT et al. have any say in the matter, Celtics over Lakers in 7 is what we’ll get.

Yeah, I’m invoking my Boston roots to pull for the Cektics—but my (second) favorite team in the West, by a pretty large margin, is the Hornets. I’d love to see them eliminate the (F)akers in the WCF. Then Kobe would have to accept his MVP award sheepishly, just as Dirk did last year…

"Cektics"

Wow, my fingers freeze up as I try to reclaim them as my team. Clearly the Warriors Gods are watching…

so does coach sloan

i hear a lot of folks knock nellie for not winning championship, what about coach sloan, easily the most underrated coach ever. what that guy has done in his career is amazing. he’s a class act and has fronted the most consistent franchise in the west.

"Class Act"

I don’t know about that—he’s always seemed to me like a Nazi hard-ass who likes to humiliate anyone who doesn’t do things his way (AK-47, e.g.)

That said, he’s a fabulous coach, no question.

the same thing could be said about any great coach

- our nellie, karl, jackson, etc.
to me AK-47 seems like a whiny kid when complaining about PT when he’s not performing.

Not really

I wouldn’t say it about Phil Jackson, or Nellie, or any number of great coaches: John Wooden, Red Auerbach, KC Jones, Joe Torre, Terry Francona, etc. All those guys are more teachers/mentors than sadistic drill-sergeants.

The “nazi-types” — Sloan, Riley, Ditka et al. — have certainly had their share of success, but it’s a total myth that you need a coach like that to win it all.

On AK-47: I don’t doubt that he’s a bit of a whiner, but he’s hardly the first player to complain about Sloan’s fascistic style.

Here’s what John Amaechi had to say about him in a recent interview:

It’s not because I was gay, that he didn’t like me. That was part of it, but it shouldn’t have been part of it. He also didn’t like me because he thought I didn’t like white people. And the fact is my mother is white, so I’m kind of insulted by that in certain. He is a belligerent man. He is a cruel man in many respects. This is not about my inability to take criticism. It’s my inability to be called an f’ing c* on a daily basis…”

... he’s the best coach I’ve ever played for in terms of his technical ability. And without a doubt, he’s the worst the person I’ve ever met in my entire life, in terms of dealing with people.

Not words one generally hears spoken about Nellie, Phil Jackson or Red Auerbach.

I concur...

Sloan isn’t a guy I find myself wanting to win. In addition to his blatantly nasty in game demeanor, his rumored and frequently corroborated disrespectful manners, his rumored anti-gay sentiments (sentiments which are echoed by the owner of the Jazz), and the fan sportsmanship incidents that have occured in Utah, I’d really rather see them shuffle out of the picture like always.

by Zack Vank on Apr 28, 2008 9:05 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

those are valid points/good thoughts

i didn’t mean to intimate that you needed a “nazi-type” to win it all.
as for Amaechi, he suffered for his sexuality at the hands of many either blatantly or through more subtle, though no less insidious, anti-gay folks who populate the sports universe in the stands, front office, media and locker rooms. that’s just fucking terrible, there is no excuse for that.
as for all the coaches we’ve mentioned and more considered great have always had their detractors for their game calling quirks, stubbornness and their “my way or the highway” mentality. i don’t think that jackson/nellie calling his players out in the press is necessarily a upstanding thing to do, but they do it and often gets results. coach karl/riley are noted for their tempers and its wrath directed at players.
look, i doubt that 90% or the folks on the teams we root for are people we’d want to nominate for a peace prize or even call out friends, my point is firstly, that i think sloan is an underrated coach whose career dictates a championship. second, coaches use all types of physical, mental and emotional manipulation of their players, most of which is probably ethically questionable. so i don’t find that argument totally valid.
as far as the Jazz and an organization,or their fan base, i couldn’t get a shit about them… but sleepy, you’ve brought up some good stuff to think about.
keep it coming!

Did Stockton & Malone “deserve” a ring? No, neither does Sloan. Neither does KG, or coach Nelson, or Charles Barkley, or anyone else. Lifetime achievement awards maybe for the HOF, but there are no sentimental rings – that’s precisely what makes sport pure – on the court, my team vs yours & strap em up. And I loved watching every player I just listed play.

As for deserving, Kobe deserves to be in jail but he’s not either.

yeah

i really wanna see a lakers-celtics championship. i dunno what it is about the hornets i dont like, but i dont like em. haha. maybe its chris pauls’ childishness or maybe its cuz i think jason kidd deserves a ring (wont get it though)

by lowchi on Apr 28, 2008 1:43 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

first of all

how is cp3 childish. he is one of the most mild-mannored and classy players in the nba. Jason Kidd is childish. that flagent was rediculous. I want the hornets to win it all.

Isn't it obvious

The SPURS man, I hate seeing a repeat winner every year. Plus if they weren’t playing a flashy opponent like the Suns, or possible Lakers, it would be almost unberable to watch. Pray we don’t have a Spurs vs Jazz, Western Conference finals.

dynasty (in small case, not caps)

What SA has done with Duncan is reminiscent of the Boston & LAL teams with Bird and Magic. Did you have the same feeling then? Showtime was incredible, but so was the precision of the Celtics. It was just some of the most incredible hoop imaginable.

The Spurs are making history before our eyes, and as Larry Brown would say, are playing the game right way. They can play both tempos – fast, or precision – and beat you either way. Re Brown, I wish he hadn’t have ditched the Pistons so quickly, that seemed like a perfect marriage of roster and coach.

Anyway, I’d love a 7 game Spurs – LA series, followed by a 7 game SA – Boston series. But I’m old school, well, maybe just old, but that’s me.

I want the Fakers out

I cannot stand Kobe. Call me a hater, but he gets more credit than he deserves. The media loves him, so it gives him credit for all the wins, and forgets to mention all his mistakes and flaws. Also, his rings are because of Shaq. This season, Lakers were a middle seed until Gasol came, which then they rose to the top seed. Then Gasol got injured and they fell into a middle seed again. Finally, when Gasol came back, the Lakers rose to the top seed. Coincidence? Kobe should not be an MVP candidate.
I cannot stand Kobe, and I hope that he never gets even close to another ring. I hope the Lakers get knocked out by the Jazz, although initially I was rooting for another 8 over 1, but that’s not happening.

hmm

i guess i just think cp3 is childish because of the low blow he gave to that guy in college, and when he was playing against the warriors this season he was ‘wired’ and he was begging the coach to get in like a 5th grader.

ARE YOU KIDDING ME...?

The Timberwolves are so dumb, on Espn Bill Simmons said that we offered Ellis, BWright, Biedrins, and Harrington and they didnt do it, we are a lucky organization

we are a lucky organization?

you mean cause we’re done and gone fishing? or cause we still got the MNT?? :>)

we're lucky

cause Garnett can’t even beat the hawks.

Go Hawks

Ok, If the Hawks can eliminate the Celtics I’ll feel a lot better about the Warriors getting the early boot.

In no particular order

Nuggets – sorry AI, you and Melo just aren’t made for each other
Jazz – I just don’t like a lot of their players and a majority of their fans
Wizards – Stevenson is a joke
Lakers – I hope Boston takes them out in the Finals

Lakers

ill even root for the jazz against them

by sam23 on Apr 28, 2008 12:28 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Spurs is number one on my list

The Jazz are second.

I want a Hornets-Celtics finals with the Celtics winning it all, but it looks more and more like a Lakers-Celtics finals is more realistic.

So I guess I will root for the Lakers if they play the Spurs in the Western Conference Finals.

by J2daZ on Apr 28, 2008 12:38 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

lakers

owned jazz even without gasol at utah. I don’t see Utah beating Lakers. I also don’t see Hornets beating LA. The only possibility is the Spurs.. but I don’t want to see Spurs win again. Spurs fan are almost as unbearable as Laker fans.

by saintdee on Apr 28, 2008 2:19 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Denver and Utah

I don’t like Denver because their players are very cocky, especially J.R. Smith. I don’t like Utah, because they bully teams around and run when there offense should be slow. I hate both teams because they don’t understand sportsmanship. For example when the game is obviously over both teams play there best players until the buzzer sounds.

It's Been A Great Year! Thanks Warriors!

I wouldn't

mind seeing the Pistons and Celtics taken out of the first round but I also want to see a Celtics/Lakers final…I want to see someone from the East to win the Championship besides the Pistons…
