What are we going to do?

With free agency looming, the chances of Pietrus staying are slim to none.

I have not been a big fan of his this season but he has proved me wrong of late.

I know priorities are to resign Monta and Beans and management most likely will be able to do so.

I don't forsee Baron opting out either and we would probably be able to keep Buki at a reasonable price too.

Barnes is most likely out of here unless he signs for the minimum or something. But the one guy that the Dubz will probably lose and miss the most is Pietrus.

It's obvious we need more of his brand of defense and energy.  If he leaves, I don't know how we could get any better than we are.  At the late teens spot where we will draft, I doubt there will be someone who can match P's intensity, rebounding and defense.

Brandon Rush looks like he could be a solid defender with his frame, but even if the Dubz drafted him, would Nellie play him?

I love watching the Dubz play day in night out, but aside from our current players like B-Wright getting immensely better, I don't know how else we can improve this offseason.

What are your thoughts?

Agreed
But in fact, i say we go a step further.  Keep Baron and Monta, and maaaaaaaybe Jax and Marco..

then trade EVERYONE ELSE!

This is gonna be a looooooong off-season.

Baron with 5.. 4.. 3.. pull up jumper.. HE GOT IT!!!

I agree pfree
although AH is cool we would get better by trading him and his eight point something million $$$, and get a true PF. Another thing when S-Jax is off he's WAAAAY off.

Who wants Al and his big contract
and if they could find someone do you think they want to trade a real power forward for him?

Maybe if they don't make the playoffs and they include a lottery pick

by Zig on Apr 6, 2008 8:57 PM PDT up reply actions

People who want an expiring contract
His contract isn't horrible.  He's probably a 6-7M player.  He's good for mismatches.  He'd be a great 6th man.  Did I mention that he's an expiring contract?  People love that.  But we'd have to take on a bad contract in return... I'd rather just let him and Foyle expire, make a champagne toast, and look forward.

i say
let mp go marco will be the new him. let barnes go, keep buki, keep monta though i feel longterm that could bite them in the butt with the money they are going to spend. bieds will be affordable, and sadly i thnk barron would opt out, thats why he is doing so good this year. harrington has to go he keeps tryign to be a sg in a pf body and thats not a good thing. this team is going to look very very strange next year hopefully some free agent come along that could save the team. but last time i remembered it took 9 years just to find a good leader and it took him 3 just to have his talent pay off.

some thoughts
first of all, if we miss the playoffs, we jump up to the lottery, so that means we jump up 5 spots at least

monta ellis is our number one priority this offseason.

mullin should sign biedrins this summer, but he shouldn't give him a long contract unless he absolutely has to. getting biedrins to sign for another one year deal would be in both biedrins' and the warriors favor.

it's a shame pietrus is leaving, and it's a shame he's shut himself down for the stretch run. we really could have used him. it's going to hurt watch him be a big contributor for another team next year and having to hear announcer after announcer say "where did this guy come from! why didn't the warriors play him!"

we're getting worse year by year. last year was our best year. this year we missed j rich/consistent bench production/consistent production from any of our bigs. next year we'll be worse than this year if we lose pietrus and only bring up d leaguers to replace him.

so if i'm the gm, and i notice that our team seems to be leveling off, what do i do?

this may seem blashphemous here, but i was wondering if anyone else has been thinking what i've been thinking. does anyone sorta secretly hope baron opts out? here's a highly hypothetical situation:

baron opts out
brand opts out

we sign brand, we draft russell westbrook at 14 (assuming we miss the playoffs, which clearly is not a foregone conclusion.)

then we have a starting lineup of

westbrook
ellis
jackson
brand
biedrins

we suddenly have a nice defensive team that can rebound and still run and score.

i think westbrook would compliment ellis nicely. they're both quick, they can both attack the rim, westbrook can always matchup on the better guard, and he gives way more effort on defense than baron. now, of course rose would be better, but that seems a bit unrealistic. i'm not that interested in augustin because he's small, same with collison. westbrook would be nice. brand would make biedrins look 4 times better. i think that team contends for years to come, and improves steadily behind westbrook, ellis, and biedrins.

by Iggy_Zohn on Apr 6, 2008 7:56 PM PDT reply actions

Huh?!?!?!
improves steadily behind westbrook, ellis, and biedrins.

"Improves steadily behind... beans"?

Iggy, it's like I don't even know you.  Has your identity been stolen?

This isn't a bad idea, but I'd still much rather pay a healthy BD than a fresh of an ACL tear Brand, and they'll likely be in the same payscale.

I'm not going to look into it, but I'm pretty sure there'll be a few more options out there if we are faced with that possibility.  Shawn Marion comes to mind.  We could offer to S&T Baron and our #1 for Rose.  Would that even be enough?

brand didn't tear his acl
he tore his achiles. and clearly, if i were the gm, i would have to do some more research on that injury before i made any move, which mullin will of course do this summer.

i may have spoken too soon in my post, because denver incredibly lost. but i think it's safe to say our team seems to be topping out potential wise.

the only reason baron davis played the whole season is because its a contract year. no doubt in my mind. he'll never, ever, do it again. i guarantee it. as great as he is, we're eventually handing the team over to monta, so we could do it sooner rather than later, pay someone else baron's money, and become a title contender, something we won't be with the present roster.

marion would be a cool addition as well. brand would be better though. nellie would have to switch up his philosophy a little bit but a starting lineup of

westbrook
ellis
jackson
brand
biedrins

contends. i mean, we match up real well. load up the bench with three point shooters (bellinelli and harrington come to mind) and we're cool. i could see this team beating utah. it would be exciting, and very conceivable.

and dubs fan, that's funny you pointed out my praise of biedrins. i don't think he's a bad player, and watching him recently leads me to believe that he really could improve with some help on defense/rebounding. anyway, my argument the whole time is that he's not worth 60 mil, which i still stand by, but i don't think he'll get it this summer due to his inconsistant play all year, which is great for us.

baron's the team leader, but i could cope with him leaving if mullin replaced him and upgraded the power forward spot, and i think that would be possible with the money we'd save by letting b dizzle go.

by Iggy_Zohn on Apr 7, 2008 3:37 PM PDT up reply actions

Brand
I could be missing something here, but even if Baron opts out, we would need to re-sign Monta and AB before we could make any offers to FA's. I don't have all the salaries in front of me but I'm pretty sure that if you add our remaining salaries to what we would likely pay Monta and AB and add in another mill or two for our first rounder we are either at or pretty close to the salary cap again. I don't think we have enough money to make Brand the kind of offer it would take to get him.

I will look into it in greater detail later but it's something you might want to do some research on seeing as it is your idea. I could be wrong, let me know what you find out.

baron
right, but if baron opts out, that's 16 or 17 million we don't have to spend on him next year.

by Iggy_Zohn on Apr 7, 2008 8:16 PM PDT up reply actions

cap space
If we do not renounce Biedrins or Ellis, the still count against our cap until they're re-signed.  Once they ink new contracts, they count at the dollar value of the new contract.  Before that, they count at 3x's their current contract.  In both cases, the 3x amount is likely to be less than their actual starting salary in a new deal.  It means that in the (what I'd consider) unlikely event that Baron opts out and we go after a big name FA to replace him, we're in better shape doing that before signing Biedrins and Ellis (certainly Ellis, whose raise will be much bigger in proportion to current salary) to new deals.  Since both are restricted free agents, this is a plausible scenario as there's no immediate urgency to "sign before someone else takes them away".

If we do this, depending on how much the new cap is, Baron's departure would give us somewhere between $15 and $18 million to offer to free agents.  This absolutely means saying goodbye to Pietrus and Barnes and relies on Azubuike not opting out and/or doing so on a timeline that puts his contract situation on hold pending the signing of other players.  Signing Ellis and Biedrins first would kill almost all of this space and mean that Baron's salary would walk away with almost no ability to replace it with another player.

by jae on Apr 10, 2008 10:22 AM PDT up reply actions

I hope I'm wrong but I just have this crazy feelin
that Baron is gonna walk.  Ya, he's due to make 17.2 mill but I think he'd walk and take less per year for a long term deal..something like 5 years 75-80 mill.  Where would he go?  Miami.  With Shaq off the books and ricky davis/jason williams expiring, the Heat could re sign Marion and sign Diddy.  Draft Beasely and you got a contender.  Baron, Wade, Marion, Haslem/Beasely...yikes...Baron would bolt for one of the most sought NBA destinations..Diddy and South Beach is very possible.

by JimBarnett2KevinGarnett on Apr 6, 2008 7:58 PM PDT reply actions

i have that feeling too
but i think it could be a good thing in the long term. now that we all understand that ellis is the future of our franchise, baron just doesn't quite compliment him because of his lack of defense. we could spend baron's money on a power forward and draft a pg, or the other way around. davis really has not stepped up down the stretch. this has been such a tease of a season.

by Iggy_Zohn on Apr 6, 2008 8:06 PM PDT up reply actions

Miami's cap situation
If Miami keeps Marion, they won't have the space under the cap to sign Baron for anything close to that sort of money.  They'd be dangling the MLE.  I don't think that gets them Baron.

5 years 75 million when signing with a new team requires an opening bid of $13million a year.  The list of teams that will be $13 million under the cap is short.  Depending on what the cap is (somewhere in the 55 to 60 million range)very few teams fit the bill.  Most of them (Miami, Washington, LAC) are in that bunch only if a big name opts out and they don't keep him.  Another couple (Chicago and Atlanta) are there only if they let their guys coming off rookie deals walk away without raises. Seattle, New Jersey, Portland and Minn have positioned themselves to be spenders in one more year, but that's one more year.  "Who wants to play in Memphis?" could be the question free agents have to ask themselves this offseasn.

if nelly back, then barons back for sure. There isn't another coach in the league baron wants to play for. If Nelly retires then barons probably gone.

pacers
we need to complete our warriors/pacers team. Free JO. Has great d, runs the floor, REBOUNDS, and u known he's got jackson back. I think Indiana is trying to ship
anyone out of there that was involved in that fight. Jermaines the last one and pacers are trying to change that image so we should give them more white boys. Plus it seems mullins has a good relationship with Indiana. He also played after the warriors.

Rehash Jermaine O'neal is a mistake.
Jermaine O'neal no longer runs the floor.  That was something of a conflict with the coaching staff in Indy.  Jermaine O'neal is only a mediocre rebounder for a frontcourt player at this point in his career.  He's an over-rated, injury prone cap liability for several more years.

by jae on Apr 7, 2008 11:49 AM PDT up reply actions

free up
u say that bout jermaine now but on the warriors he can be a whole diff player. U known wit nellie does to players the best comes out of them in this open style game. Jo will b resurrected in this style of play. Look at jack who knew he had this kind of defense he now guards the best opponent. He never did that on Indiana. Also some how he learned how to pass on the dubs look at the stats. With a winning franchise jermaine will want to play and win. Look at baron he has not missed a
game. Y cuz hornets suck just like Indiana. The dubs make
u an entirely diff player. I don't see other teams pick up
d leaguers and make them superstars (buike). That said free jo

Other teams do pick up D-Leaguers

BD then and Jermaine now are very different situations.   Baron had been in the league since the 99-00 season (he was acquired in the middle of his 6th season and was 26 years old), O'Neal has been around since 96-97 and is now in the middle of his 12th season in the league at 29.  O'Neal has also missed 120 games in the last 4 seasons.  When we acquired Baron, he'd missed 75 games in 3 seasons.

In summary, when we acquired BD, he was younger, had half as many seasons in the league, and had half the injury history of Jermaine O'Neal now.

I seriously doubt Jermaine O'Neal would be able to keep up with the Warriors.

O'Neal
Since he can hardly keep up with the Pacers, I don't think he or his $20million per for the next 3 would be able to keep up with the faster paced Warriors.

He's a ridiculously over-rated player.  Do not want!
