OPEN THREAD: Warriors vs Kings - The Battle Rages On.

Originally posted: Tue Apr 08, 2008 at 12:29:57 PM PDT

csn

Warriors (W-L): 46-31

Kings (W-L): 36-41

Time: 7:30PM PST tip off

TV:CSN Bay Area

Vegas Odds: Golden State by 11 (source: yahoo.com)

Despite our loss in New Orleans on Sunday morning, we were fortunate enough to witness Denver fall short on their matchup to the Sonics, keeping us tied for 8th place (technically 9th due to the regular season record) with matching win-loss records.

We were lucky. That may not be the case again.

It's time to find out what kind of team we really are. Will it be fortune that allows us our 2nd Playoff berth in two years? Or will it be us taking matters into our own hands?! Tonight we will truly see which path these Warriors are going to take.

JUMP!!!

Star-divide

We cannot rely on Denver losing anymore. Especially because while we are facing off against the Kings, a team that handed us a loss on March 18th, Denver will be facing off against the 23 and 54, completely eliminated from Playoff contention, Clippers. Translation? We have to assume a Denver win. In fact, it would be great if the Warriors just went ahead and made this assumption for the rest of the season.

...with the exception of this Thursday's game of course.

That being said, we should keep in mind that we ourselves are playing a team that is eliminated from Playoff contention. Given this fact, it should be interesting to see what kind of minute distribution the Kings give to their franchise players like Ron Ron and Martin. Hopefully they decide not to put their money players at injury risk and, as a result, show a little Northern California love to their boys in Oakland!

I suppose that would be too easy, wouldn't it? And if Warriors history has taught us anything, nothing comes easy. Nothing. The fight for the 8th spot in the West rages on!

EVERY. GAME. COUNTS.

Predictions

* Warriors win, Denver loses.
* Warriors win, Denver loses.
* Warriors win, Denver loses.
* Warriors win, Denver loses.
* Warriors by 8.

GSoM Fun Fact: After this recap, I will have written on every Kings game this season. Total coincidence.

Sac...
loves to play spoiler in these kind of games where it'll shoot down the dub's hope of a playoff birth. let's see if k mart has a career night in scoring. he probably will.. *jinx* haha... sprain your ankle, sprain your ankle.

Nothing but love for Sacto....
....for two years running now. Last year, the only reason we made the playoffs was because the ELIMINATED Sacto Kings went down to Staples and knocked off the Clippers on the last Sunday of the regular season. This year, the ELIMINATED Sacto Kings went into Denver without Artest, Miller, and Udrih, and knocked off a well-rested Denver Nuggets team. If we make the playoffs by ONE game again this year, it's because of Sacramento.

So....thank you Kings. Now pls do us one more favor and roll over tonight.

Wow judging by the comments and poll
on SacTown Royalty, most of the kings fans really want the dubs to miss the playoffs instead of the nuggets.  This comment made me laugh though.
"However, the Warriors and their fans drive me nuts.  I hate seeing them in our building when I watch the games.  They're obnoxious."

Can't be anymore annoying than seeing all those purple jerseys at oracle when the kings come to town .

by nautica on Apr 8, 2008 1:23 PM PDT reply actions

people from sacramento
should consider it an honor when warrior fans actually take the time to drive down there and seat themselves in that old, worn out, dilapidated excuse for an arena they call Arco.  Actually just mentioning the name "Sacramento" by someone from the bay area let alone a warrior fan should be an honor in itself.

Oh about the game?? Well expect Francisco Garcia to be the 2nd coming of George Gervin, K Mart as Reggie Miller, John Salmons as Carmelo Anthony and Shelden Williams well... as the caveman from the Geico commercials.

Keys to a Warrior win: BY NOW, THEY SHOULD KNOW WHAT TO DO, AND HOW TO DO IT TO WIN.  It doesnt take an expert. SHOW THE F UP W'S!

First one to 100 wins.

One game at a time...
...I know The Nuggets game is supposed to be the big game but let's not get ahead of ourselves. Tonight's game is the big game! When this game is over, the Nuggets game will be the big game, and so on. If you're going to the game tonight, DO NOT be an reactionary fan by only cheering after the Dubs do something. Be proactive! This team feeds off of the crowd so let's energize them from jump! A wise man once said, "It's not over til the fat lady sings" so I hope there are no big women singing the national anthem before any of these last few games.

Totally unrelated to this thread
But I don't want to open up a new thread for this.

I am looking for a birthday present for my girlfriend. She says she wants a pink Monta Ellis jersey. I have been unable to find one anywhere. Does anyone have any idea where I might find one? She swears she saw it somewhere but I am coming up empty. Thanks.

On another note I just looked at the Kings board. Brad Miller is out for the rest of this year, and Artest might be out for this game as well.

he's the type of player where if he is hitting shots, the pressure of the game will not affect him. Harrington can go on streaks but miss if the opponent just closed the gap to 1 or something. Pietrus will keep hitting.

They could definitely
make a top ten of only Warriors highlights tonight.

Also, we're already looking at Denver, check out Carmelo's recent games. The guy is a beast. He turns it on early in the first, and absolutely never lets up. He has to be the best mid range shooter in the game.

13-17 tonight for 36 points.

I don't think Iverson has been shooting that well lately, but he's always a threat late in games.

it's a little overrated, yeah
I covered sports for a long time. The 6th man crowd noise does count for something, but not as much as the fans think. The home court advantage is very valuable but for other reasons besides people in NBA-logo jerseys screaming for defense. IMHO.

I've been at some loud crowds last year
and I was the playoffs against Dallas yes, it was energetic, and loud and a hell of a lot of fun. But to hear people tell it, the crowd won the Dallas seriest. It ain't so. The team got unconscious from three point land, not the crowd.

Look, if the game's close on Thursday, we'll be loud and proud, guaranteed.

by Dubmanny on Apr 8, 2008 10:47 PM PDT up reply actions

that's interesting, I must admit
Hmm, I wonder if it applies to NBA basketball.

I do know of studies on 82 Games and other places that determine that the single biggest advantage home NBA teams get is the FG% on outside shots. This seems to suggest that the familiarity if the home floor and the shooting environment is the largest contributor to home court advantage. At least in the NBA, the percentage of referee calls does not suggest any significant bias. None of the other "hustle" stats (rebounding, steals, blocks, etc.) seem out of the ordinary at home versus away either.

I must admit the article is intriguing and I thank you for bringing it to the table. I'm a little hesitant to apply that study to NBA basketball, but I will definitely consider it.

by Dubmanny on Apr 8, 2008 11:06 PM PDT up reply actions

Um, did you actually read that abstract?
Fascinating.
  1. The results if the study were inconclusive. Sorry.
  2. Like the other studies I cited, it mentioned that outside shots are more affected by home courts.
  3. Doesn't make the case for a crowd (i.el "social participation") has a definitive effect on performance. The hypothesis that the crowd made a difference was not proven.
  4. The studies were done in an amateur environment, not professional ones.
  5. The advantage applies to better teams rather than poor ones further lower the probability.
Was interesting study, but hardly proved anything.

Nice googling there, dude.

by Dubmanny on Apr 8, 2008 11:24 PM PDT up reply actions

the last one
was a basketball study to add to the study you mentioned.  basically this is what it is.  In your expert opinion, crowd noise hardly matters.  If anything, it is insignificant and only adds to the watching experience and has no bearing whatsoever in players' performance. right?

my point is/was -- it that crowd participation is overrated. fans think it is more important than it really is. I do not believe that a home crowd can significantly impact the results of a professional basketball game. it certainly cannot claim any credit for a victory. I totally stand by that and your basketball crowd study link substantiates that.

by Dubmanny on Apr 8, 2008 11:37 PM PDT up reply actions

a telling quote
from the study was this:

"...playing at home increases familiarity for the players and thus makes the tasks they perform more dominant."

Home teams know the rims, the building, the lighting, the shooting background, etc.

Kind of my initial point.

the subject of noise
is irrelevant basically right?

What is adrenaline?
Adrenaline is a hormone produced by the adrenal gland in the body of many animals. When it is produced in the body it stimulates the heart-rate, dilates blood vessels and air passages, and has a number of more minor effects. Adrenaline is naturally produced in high-stress or physically exhilarating situations.

can i say that one exhilirating situation is crowd noise?

it is still the environment
So, are you telling me that Denver and Utah have great home court advantages because of their crowd noise? They are not particularly raucous. There are louder crowds than Utah and Denver (especially Denver). Why the dramatic home court advantage year after year in this places?

They play at altitude which is difficult for sea-level teams. That is why they have exaggerated home court advantages. Not the level of intensity of their fans.

They have the most dramatic home court/road team records because their athletes are accustomed with the oxygen levels in their environment. Each team has some similar, but less dramatic home court advantage because of the familiarity of their home surroundings.

P.S. sorry about your crack about your intramural hoops team. That was a little out of line.

no problem
hey your a division 1 collegian, I just play in a 4'11 and under league with a bunch of other out of shape filipinos.

This might be a stretch but is it a coincidence that our home record this year is not as good as last?

maybe because the fans last year was more into it?

by VonteegoCummings on Apr 8, 2008 11:54 PM PDT up reply actions

suffice to say
that yes, crowd probably does have some effect to performance, but it is impossible to tell why or how much. I agree that there is some intangible benefit in the arena when the home crowd imparts their energy. The crowd at time does seem to propel or "lift" the team when it all gets going right.

But still, it is impossible to say how much. And other factors simply must be considered when factoring home court advantage,

I will cede your point somewhat. You have made a very good point re: adrenaline and its role in the body and its role during loud and stressful situations. These definitely apply to loud home crowds. You have my respect, Vonteego.

READ THIS!!!
If Thursday's matchup wasn't already going to be HUGE, check this out.

NBA timebreakers for the playoffs go like this (and we all know the Nuggets and Warriors currently have the same record)

1) Head to Head

Ok, Denver leads this 2-1, but the W's have a chance at making it 2-2, so...

2) Conference Record

Nuggets 28-20
Warriors 27-21

With a "W" on Thursday, they are identical at 28-21, so...

3) Records against teams at or above .500

Denver 20-22
Warriors 20-23

Wow!  Talk about close.  Both teams play all Conference games the rest of the way with the Warriors playing only Denver and Phoenix above .500.  Denver plays 3 teams above .500 (Utah, Golden State, and Houston).  If the first three tiebreakers are tied, then...

4) Head to Head point totals

Right now, Denver has outscored the W's by 1 point in their three games.  If the Warriors win Thursday by 1 point, the final tie-breaker is...

5) Coin toss!!!  Imagine that!  Getting into the playoffs by coin toss.

I couldn't help myself
I had to know what the tiebreakers were, and the more I looked, the more I was amazed at how close everything is.

by VDubs831 on Apr 8, 2008 10:39 PM PDT up reply actions

except
it cant happen.. since if we are tied at the end of the season then denver will win the tiebreaker since if we are tied they will have more conference wins then us.

by saintdee on Apr 8, 2008 10:40 PM PDT up reply actions

Not to mention that
Those tiebreakers are incorrect. The third tiebreaker is record against western conference playoff teams, not +.500 teams.

http://www.nba.com/statistics/playoff_picture.html

At any rate, it is not possible for the Warriors to BOTH be tied with Denver AND have a better conference record.

I guess I read it wrong
the details at the bottom of that page explain it better, I just looked at the footnote numbers under the current standings.

_
there would be some major controversy if any teams playoff chances, league-wide, were determined by a coin-toss.
but that is a mildly comprehensive system to decide a tiebreaker. what else could be done? has that ever happened in the history of the nba? i wonder how close it's even got to that.
