Trading Mr. Harrington
I do agree with much of the posting here at GSoM that Al Harrington is the most likely to be traded this offseason, as he will be playing out the last year of his contract and is a proven commodity.
I personally think, though, that Mully wont get any offers that help us the way Al could next season, since very few trades in the NBA are equally beneficial and help both teams immediately. I've seen some ideas bounced around like trading Al for another veteran forward, but realistically, the only time a veteran is traded for a veteran is when they play very different positions (think point guard for power forward).
The only way I see Al leaving Oakland is if we trade him in a similar fashion to how we traded JRich last year. As in, finding a team who is far under the cap and trading them Al for a trade exception/draft picks/future considerations. There are two teams that I can see thinking twice about taking on Al and his hefty contract, and (surprise) both are in the eastern conference. Let me know what you all think about the odds...
Philadelphia 76ers:
They are WAY under the cap going into this offseason, and are also riding high with their late season success and playoff birth. They have a very young team, and also a new GM who is going into his first offseason with the club. Although they still need to wrap up Andre Iguodala, and one of their needs this offseason is to upgrade at the power forward position. Al seems to be a decent fit for their fast pace, and they really dont have anyone currently on the roster who fills the 4 nicely (Thaddeus Young to me seems more like a 3). They could offer us their first round pick, plus the posibility of another pick (maybe give the Warriors the right to swap picks in 2009). Realistically, the Sixers want to persue Brand or Jamison in the off-season, but Al would probably be the next tier down if Brand doesn't opt out and Jamison looks like he is gonna resign.
New Jersey Nets:
Now that Jason Kidd is off the books, the Nets (surprisingly) have some cap room to mess around with. (Although I'm still not sure about that Keith Van Horn contract, if anyone has official info, please let me know). They are in dire need of a scoring option that can play in the front court, and I would think pairing Al with Carter and Jefferson on the wings could be a really good thing for them. Plus, Al's contract would come off the books in time for a run at LeBron. They will most likely end up with the 10th/11th pick in the draft, and I personally think thats good value for Al. At this point it would be speculation, but we could use our two picks to grab a point and a forward at the back end of the lottery with our two picks (Russell Westbrook/Donte Green????) which might be good fits long term for us.
I would really think that the New Jersey deal might actually be a good trade for both teams, but lets see what you think.....

I could be wrong but...
I think Harrington has two years left on his contract. This may undermine your assumptions but maybe not :-)
CWebb is undoubtedly the answer but I forgot the question.

Houston?
How about Al for Shane Battier and their 1st round pick (25th). Houston needs another scoring option to pair with T-Mac and Yao and he would fit their system because Rick Adelman is offensive minded.
i hope we win a championship soon

That trade isn’t even close to being fair, Shane Battier is a better shooter and defender than Al is or ever will be AND you want them to throw in their pick, you might as well suggest trading Al for Kobe.
Stephen Jackson catches on the wing and faces up against Vujacic. When Jax looks down and sees Vujacic, his eyes light up. He pulls out his nine, screams "Thug Life" and empties the clip, then drives in for a basically uncontested layup.

didnt memphis
swap Rudy Gay for Battier because they thought they DIDNT need another scorer? Battier was a stud for them and a fan favorite, I dont know if theyd trade him for Al AND our pick.

Not going to happen to either team…
The Sixers were a surprise this year and I suppose you could consider them an up and coming Leastern Conf. team, they are going to sign AI to a hefty contract and whatever else remains they are going to use to fill out their bench, they’re going to have to spend some money at the PG area because I’m almost positive Andre Millers contract is up. Also doesn’t AI play the 3? that would leave Thad Young to play the 4 spot, unless they plan to use him in a back up roll.
The Nets are garbage, they already have a shit load of money tied up in Harris, Carter and Jefferson, I highly doubt they want to take on Al’s contract. Also they have Sean Williams at the 4 who looks like he could end up being a beast at the 4 position.

al's
contract expires after the 09/10 season and he will be making 9.2 mil next season. i agree that the nets aren’t looking to add another big contract after trading kidd. i think they’d even prefer to move carter or even jefferson this offseason and start the rebuilding. as for the sixer’s there is no way they give up on thad young and move him to the bench, plus their greatest need is at the point so i doubt they trade anything for a sf/pf.
an interesting idea would be to do a sign and trade with the clippers; maggette for harrington. the clips will probably lose brand and they could have a front court of kaman, harrington, thornton. this way they don’t just lose corey and brand for nothing. they’d also free up brands 16 mil and have enough to resign some of their core young guys like livingston, ross, davis. for the W’s they have al on the books till 2010 anyways so a sign and trade for maggette till then doesn’t put them in a future hole. as unconventional as nellie is he could throw out a lineup of baron(if hes back) ellis jackson maggette and biedrins with azi, bw, bellinelli for sure off the bench. maggette also helps fill the gap if baron leaves. if baron opts out they’d have plenty of room to sign ellis and biedrins and still have room to pursue guys like ronny turiaf, ryan gomes, craig smith, stromile swift, nenad krstic, andray blatche, jannero pargo, louis williams, steve blake, travis outlaw.

i dont think
the sixers greatest need is the point. they seem to really like andre miller, they had plenty of oppertunity to deal him before the deadline last year and passed. Miller is old, but Lou Williams seems to be the heir apparent even though he’s not a true PG yet. I think theyd like to have Williams spend a couple more years backing up and playing alongside Miller before turning it over to him. Theyre obviously sold on Dalembert, Iggy, and Young. Iggy and Young can play the 2 and the 3, the 2 and the 4 or the 3 and the 4 so IMO theyre biggest need is an outside shooter at the 2,3, or 4

I like Maggette
but I doubt the clips make that trade. Doesnt their owner LOVE Maggette? Swift, Blatche, and Outlaw seem like guys born to play in this system, and I like louis Williams, Pargo and Smith too.

An even more important question: does Maggettte make that trade? What does he want? What will he agree to? He’s the one with final say in a sign and trade.
by jae on May 18, 2008 9:14 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
sixers
could be a legit option, because they have absolutely positively NO outside shooting after the Korver trade. Having only watched them in the playoffs, it seems like they move the ball around well and have a bunch of young guys in Young, Iggy, and Williams who attack the basket well, but nobody to kick it back out to. They could use another scorer, but I’m not sure what we could get back from them. I dont think the Nets want to add another offensive minded, perimeter oriented guy with a large contract, but I’d be willing to deal Al for Sean Williams straight up. I really wished we couldve landed Williams in the draft last year as he seems like the physical, rebounding and defense guy we need, who also has the athleticism to play nellie ball. I agree it doesnt seem like theres a logical fit out there for Al, but there didnt appear to be one for JRich last year either so who knows.

Offseason moves/Gallinari/Free agency
Deal Baron for a top 8 pick, and a sixth man.
As of right now, Baron’s one of the biggest poker chip’s in the league. He just came off a season where he led a team to nearly 50 wins in one of the most competitive conferences in decades. We lucked out having him healthy enough to play 82 games. Nobody would have thought he could do that. Suffice to say he can do it again or even play at the same level for 2 more years. Baron won’t get better, and he won’t get younger but if he’s dealt he can make the Warriors just that. We should make a deal now, move up the draft, and add a middle man to the Big/Little core of Biedrins, Wright, and Monta.
Next year many teams will seriously decline, the Warriors could prepare to ascend.
Who do we deal Baron to if we want a high pick?
I would say either Milwaukee, Clippers, or New York.
Bucks
Warriors get
7th pick , Maurice Williams, Desmond Mason, Charlie Villanueva
Milwuakee gets
Baron Davis
This could be negotiated fairly for both sides. The Bucks would be with Redd and Baron in the backcourt, some serious firepower and easily one of the best backcourt tandems in the east. Villanueva has been a disappointment for them so far and he could be moved, still only 23 or so. Desmond Mason and Azubuike would be a bit redundant, but for the 7th overall, Buki could be thrown in the deal as well.
Clippers
Warriors get Maggette, Livingston, 6th pick
Clippers get Baron Davis
This was mentioned before and I like the deal in every avenue. Livingston could never turn out to be quite what everyone hoped before he got hurt. But he’s got a lot of talent and he could be still be an amazing prospect if he rehabilitates like Monta did, after dropping all the way to the 2nd rd. due to knee injury. Corey Maggette would play in our tempo and would be a good fit.
New York
Warriors get
5th overall
David Lee
Jamal Crawford
Renaldo Balkman
James Jones
Knicks get
Baron Davis, 14th pick, Azubuike
I would love to see us take advantage of Isaiah Thomas’ Knicks. I think we could pull off a trade with them simply by giving them a new star PG in Baron, allowing them to part ways with Marbury for good this offseason as it seems Isaiah is here to stay. I don’t see how you go through another season with both of them.
Lee is just the kind of guy we need on the bench. Every contending team needs a guy like David Lee who controls the glass and plays like a bull in a china shop. He will be one of the best rebounders in the NBA for a long time and I don’t think Isaiah values him enough.
Who do we draft?
Danilo Gallinari 6-10 SF out of Italy.
19 yrs. old 34 mpg 17.5 ppg FG% 46.2 3P% 40.5 Rpg 6 Spg 2 Apg 2 FT% 86.5
If we do well enough to land a lottery pick in the 5-8 range, I pick this guy every time. Take the New Orleans Hornets, you look at their team and you’ll notice that all the players on the squad are completely different from eachother, each with their own unique skill set. It makes their team extremely strong and well spread out leaving them with few weaknesses.
Here is Gallinari’s profile.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E1WBUXEgGBQ&feature=related
If we could have a swingman who could shoot like him from the outside, who could play along Brandan Wright, a guy with Gallinari’s size at 6-10. So now you got a front court with Biedrins 6-11 Wright plays over 7 ft. Gallinari 6-10..
It allows Monta to go undersized at the guard.
This prospect obviously has some good skills passing the ball as well. Having him up top feeding Wright or popping Beans with the roll…or you got a guy 6-10 who won the 3-point shootout in the Italian league all-star game hitting 3’s. He can play both guard spots and drives the ball extremely well. Doesnt miss from the line. Can create then pass much like Jackson, who would be a tough loss. But if we could complete the process of building this team into a competitor, this paisan kid is a good wedge to the stone.

i'm not saying I agree or disagree
but another big plus of having Gallinari there would be that it would likely boost Belinelli’s play and attitude (and also Gallinari’s).

I havent seen enough of Gallinari
to form an opinion. But couldnt he fall to 14? Might not need to trade into the top 8. The Bucks trade requires them to give up a lot for Baron, I doubt theyd do it. I still like the Clips trade, but I liked it a lot more when it looked like we could grab Mayo with that pick….its looking more and more like he will be the 3rd overall pick now. With Isiah out in NY I think the new management probably wants to hang on to their young guys like Lee and Crawford and let some of those bloated contracts expire, but they could use a marketable guy like Baron, and he would fit DAnotoni’s offense well

Latest Chad Ford article
Has Kevin Love looking really good.
He’s cut off 13lbs from his frame and says he’s in the best shape of his life (thanks to Joe Abunassur (sic) who also helped train Baron i believe).
Cutting down his weight and toning his body would definitely help with his explosiveness, quickness, lateral movement and second and third jumps.
From the video he looks like a top-8 pick. I’m going to say there’s no way he falls out of the top 10.
Warriors, Stupidest franchise in the league.

Gallinari
looks like Bargnani minus the height (he’s listed at 6’9”, and looks to be on the 6’8” side of that, not 6’10”). Remember those commercials that made Bargnani look all hard while he dunked on Italian leaguers? He has a nice touch, but last I checked we already filled the soft Italian shooter spot on our roster.

keep baron, #14 pick
try to trade Al to NY for Lee + Rose who has expiring contract, Lee would be a great energy, rebounder for this team. Al’s play has been inconsistent and his outside shot has disappeared. He lacks quickness and has no lift to fight for those rebounds and put backs. Last two seasons his play has declined during our playoff push.

Let’s trade a player who’s expensive and underperforming for us for an expiring contract and a solid young player who happens to be their fan favorite… that’s gonna happen.

hmm
I may be wrong, but I just don’t see any team with real cap space wanting to spend it on Al. Admittedly the Bobcats did just that with J-Rich last year, but that was a surprising move, and it really didn’t end up doing very much for them.
Would it be worth it to us to essentially just dump Al for an expiring? To Cleveland for Eric Snow, for example, or to Houston for Bobby Jackson and someone? My sense is that it’s not—the summer of ‘09 doesn’t seem like a time when we’ll specifically need to clear room, so it’s probably not worth dropping a rotation cog. But that seems like one of the only ways that teams might be motivated to grab him.

will have alot doing on them now they finally got a actual coach, and yes he sucked in ny, but phil jackson would of done bad on that team too. but larry brown would have that team focused and actually have plays that work, and utilize j rich to his best abilities.

Harrington ..
It’s become clear that Harrington’s place in the doghouse is firm – he needs to go somewhere that will allow him to play in the post. Nellie’s anchor system has hurt Al so much – he needs a place to just play his game at the four.
There aren’t many likely places for Harrington to go, though, because he’s not seen as a guy with that much value because of his play this season.
New Jersey would have been a great option for Al. Krstic is a more perimeter big man and Harrington could stay out of the way for guys like Vince and RJ to operate. The problem with the Nets is simple, though: they have two picks and will likely take a swingman with the first one and a big man with the second. With Sean Williams, Josh Boone, Nenad Krstic, Stromile Swift, and their rookie in hand, I don’t see why they’d want Al. Now, trading Al for Swift is sort of a lateral move that does have the benefit of Swift expiring next summer. New Jersey also sees that as a benefit, though.
The Sixers have so much flexibility that guessing what they’re going to do is really hard. I have heard so many rumors around them that I don’t know what to believe – everything from going after free agents to potentially working out a way to get Kenyon Martin .. it’s too much for my tiny brain.
I think the teams you want to take a closer look at are:
Memphis: Granted, we’ll have to see how the lottery plays out, but I expect them to take Rose if they can. He’ll help their putrid attendance and be well-received .. they then choose two of those prospect guards to move (my guess is Crittenton and Lowry) and get something in return. The Warriors should watch closely and see if they can get one of those two and Hakim Warrick. Maybe some filler is needed.
Toronto: TJ Ford is basically on his way out – the swap works almost perfectly. Calderon gets happy and the Warriors have a backup, uptempo PG that helps Baron keep minutes down and gives leverage in contract talks.
New York: The Knicks have 13 guys under contract for next year and one really nice draft pick in hand. So with basically 14 guys, there’s got to be some roster movement here, especially when you consider that of those 14 guys, 8 are still productive. Obviously, there’s a strong possibility that David Lee is finally put on the block, but you’d have to take Jared Jeffries or Jerome James with him. No one will do it and Lee will probably stick around. I think they still believe in Jeffries and they’ll have their pick of OJ Mayo or Jerryd Bayless. But with D’Antoni in, maybe they can rotate four big men: Randolph, Curry, Harrington, and Lee.
Getting Harrington on their squad isn’t too tough. You can trade him for Malik Rose and Mardy Collins and bank on the capspace next summer (bad idea), or you can get creative and try to get Nate Robinson and Jared Jeffries. It isn’t an ideal situation, but with dwindling options, it’s one I’d think about.
by pree on May 18, 2008 11:52 AM PDT reply actions 0 recs
The problem of course is that even when he’s played in the post, Harrington wasn’t particularly effective. As Atlanta’s PF he didn’t rebound and shot a less than respectable percentage for a post player. Something other than Nellie kept him from getting the high percentage looks. He scored only through high volume shooting and didn’t improve the team. It actually looks like he’s been a more efficient scorer since taking more 3s, though this has had the effect of downgrading his already anemic rebounding.
by jae on May 18, 2008 8:40 PM PDT up reply actions 1 recs
Harrington's value is not high
I vote for just keeping him around for next year to see if he improves and wait for him to become an expiring contract. I’d also be a fan of trading him at the deadline if the right opportunity came up. Most importantly though is not to just make a trade for the sake of making a trade.
