Change the Warriors jerseys and the team name.

I’ve been thinking about this for a long long time now, 10 years even, and thanks to the good people at Golden State of Mind, I have a platform to share this opinion and receive feedback on it.

When most of us see throwback jerseys, whether it’s “The City” jerseys, the RUN-TMC era jerseys (my favorite), or even the “Golden State” hardwood classics they sported a few times this year, I think we all feel a little bit of nostalgia. I get that feeling I got when I was still collecting Latrell Sprewell basketball cards or when Safeway used to give out those free Warriors basketball cards back in the day - who remembers that?!? But from the moment I saw the new logo and colors back in 1997, I simply wore the thizz face and was very disappointed. The navy and orange just didn’t tickle my pickle nor float my boat. It looked too different from the colors I grew to love. Now I’ve heard only one time a couple of years ago on KNBR that the Dubs were looking in on changing the jerseys again. Anyone have info on that? All I am hoping for is that it has a touch of the original royal blue and yellow colors that I loved so much.

Another idea I had, which I probably will get a lot of disagreement with, is to change the name from the “Golden State Warriors” to the “Bay Area Warriors.” I know Golden State is a name that we’re accustomed to but I just think the Bay Area is much more suitable. We’re not a California team right? We’re a basketball team that represents the Bay Area thus The Bay Area Warriors. I hope Mully reads this because the Warriors organization would make a lot more money from merchandising if the apparel said Bay Area on it. Is anyone with me on either of these ideas or am I just goin Artest (crazy)?

This FanPost is a submission from a member of the mighty Golden State of Mind community. While we're all here to throw up that W, these words do not necessarily reflect the views of the GSoM Crew. Still, chances are the preceding post is Unstoppable Baby!

I think

yes on the Jersey idea.. no on the Bay Area idea. Golden State sounds better to me.

RE:

If the Warriors were to change their name, I would either want them to use Oakland, or keep it as is. As far as the jerseys, something a bit more retro would be great.

Change

I love our name and hate our jerseys. Thunder sucks too. Like you, the Run TMC era jerseys were the best to me; nice and simple, blue and gold. The worst uniforms were during the Jamison days when the league was going cartoony with their merchandising (think Raptors and Timberwolves gear).

by onetwocross on May 7, 2008 6:00 PM PDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

worst

was those old striped rockets things with the rocketship with a face. horrible. almost as bad as the current wizards gold and black hideousness. i agree the run tmc era jerseys were great, but “the city” ones are nice too. golden state name is unique i stay stick with it. besides florida-tampa area also has a “bay area.”

by sam23 on May 8, 2008 4:26 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

They have to change the uniforms!!

I cannot stand Thunder!! The mascot looks stupid just like the uniforms. The phrase ‘keep it simple’ comes into play here. It seems almost every time a team changes unis it is for the worst (although I like Atlanta’s look).
The Celtics and Bulls, the Lakers….simplicity is best. If you keep changing unis its easy to lose your identity IMO.
I agree, go back to the retro threads and colors. There’s a pic floating around the net with Sleepy Floyd bringing the ball up the floor with a nice uniform on, albeit, with too short of shorts!!

by goldenstatefan on May 7, 2008 6:25 PM PDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Right there..

Good lookin out fuller over bryant!!! The shorts need to be longer in this day and age though!!

I like those uniforms

i don’t really care about them i think they’re fine. but i give a big HELL NO to the name change. i’m not from the bay area, and because of that i like being a fan of a team that doesn’t say they’re from a specific city

I love retro jerseys so a hell yes to new jerseys i love all of the oldschool jerseys, the city, golden state, Run TMC all good and better than the ones they have now, but never change golden state i love that name, when i refer to the warriors i usually dont say anything but golden state, for instance “im watching the golden state game”

by FeartheBeard4 on May 7, 2008 7:13 PM PDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Golden State...

is a great name, it sounds nothing like any other team’s name and yeah, the only time anyone says Golden State is when they are talking about the Warriors…

I do agree that the Thunder logo was weak but I don’t understand what people are talking about here because its not used anymore. The hardwood classics are very cool and so is the “W” with the bolt through it.

by in for life on May 7, 2008 7:34 PM PDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I agree with the crowd

If we ever lost the “Golden State,” I’d never stop throwing up. As I kid growing up in cold, lame Boston, I remember rooting for the ‘75 Warriors, pretty much for the name only. It was an endless source of fascination: “What is this magical Golden State ... and why can’t I live there???”

Also, what would become of this site?” Bay Area of Mind” (BAoM) doesn’t quite have the same ring.

I’m also always heartened when the young’uns share my fondness for the retro unis (either THE CITY yellows, or last year’s lovely royal blues) and distaste for the current gaudy tri-color palette and Thunder™. What does thunder even have to do with the quasi-desert-climate Bay Area? I think I experienced liked two thunderstorms in my entire 17 years living there. It’s a pure merchandising gimmick contrived by marketing dorks with no feel for the team’s roots. Leave the thunder logo to Shazam! and Gatorade, and retire the overgrown Smurf-on-steroids mascot.

With Thunder’s salary off the books, maybe Cohan could afford to go over the cap and bring in Brand …?

Sorry Sleepy

Thunder’s on the books through ‘09. Mullin gave him a $9 mil, 5-year contract a few years ago, when he ws handing them out to absolutely everyone.

Rats!

JAE had mentioned that in one of his cap analyses, but it slipped my mind. No possibility of a buyout?

Poster's Response...

Wow! It’s a landslide as far as the jersey change. It looks like we’re all in agreement that the current jerseys could definitely use an upgrade. The more I read the responses about the name change, the more I’m drifting away from my Bay Area idea. I’ve come to the conclusion that the “Golden State” name is a part of the history of this team and I gotta have respect for the history of this team.

The best name in all sports, we’re not just a city , we rep the whole damn state!
I’ve been watchin the Dubs since the 70’s and I like the current blue and gold unis the best of any they’ve had over the years, but I’m not big on nostalgia!

Change 'em BUT...

Times always change. Old school will be out of style sooner rather than later. Maybe something like a NuRetro look like with the Jordan line? New school meets old school. Maybe new jerseys with old school colors or something of the sort. But gotta keep it Golden State. Got to.

Bring back the "RETRO" !

I like the retro uni’s.Why not go to the Golden State gold-for home uni’s (with Golden State written on the front) and road uni’s (in blue,white,orange-with Warriors on the front).
What do you think folks?
One thing is certain;THUNDER WITH THE LIGHTENING BOLT (LOGO) AND MASCOT= SUCKS!!!

Lose the orange, more like

Let’s do it like they did in ‘78, with yellow unis at home, blue on the road, and occasional Sunday whites. Orange is basketball uniforms as Thunder is to logos.

I would love to see the Warriors go the route of the Pistons and Sonics in bringing back the classic uniforms with a bit a modern twist. Both Seattle and Detroit have some classy uniforms.

I like the royal blues and the City unis, they are slick. I don’t hate the current uni’s but the ol’ skool is sweet.

Why all the hate for Thunder. Who else but the Goldenstate Warriors is BADA$$ enough to have a superhero for a mascot??? Goldenstate’s mascot can kick any other teams mascot’s a$$ any day of the week.

golden state is THE greatest name, the best to rep. personally, tho- i love the golden gate orange uni’s as the alternate, but yes, the home and away jerseys aren’t so hot. when i or my wife purchase a jersey, it’s either a retro or one of the odd alternates (i.e. the black/gold/white ones in w/ the old logo). i think that the $$$ fans spend on the gear talks a lot to the management of a team.

I love "Golden State"

I heard last offseason that the Warriors are gonna change their jerseys for the 08-09 season. I’m not sure if that’s really true, probably just a rumor.

If anything, our road jerseys should say “G-State” on it and our home jerseys would have “Warriors” on it.

Agree with Classic with a twist

I agree that Detroit and Seattle have pretty good jerseys. I like the clean simple look with a modern twist like the 94 jersey with the royal blue and yellow. I think they should go back to that color scheme. Maybe for the road jerseys it should say state like the michigan state jersey’s from a few years ago?

Uniform Change: YES. Retro: YES

Ah, this thread is an oldie but a goodie on GSoM, but I never get tired of lobbying the Dubs to get a clue and dump some of the most forgettable sports uniforms this side of the Tampa Bay Rays and repossess some of the best uniforms-the City unis, which everyone on the planet LOVES-for full-time use. I mean, c’mon, guys, the City unis are Top 5 all-time sports uniforms. Even the geeks at ESPN who wouldn’t know Cheese Johnson from Magic Johnson know that. They’re the Dallas Cowboys, the New York Yankees, the Brooklyn Dodgers—they’re that level of gorgeous. But hey, at least the current ones aren’t painful to look at, like the hideous, cartoonish Todd Fuller-era ones. A hint: anything with lightning bolts is L-A-M-E. So yes, let’s start by dicing Thunder. He’s idiotic.

by BlueInTheFace on May 8, 2008 12:26 PM PDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Yes they're still looking into it.

Robert Rowell spoke to Fitz & Brooks at the end of the season last year. Apparently it takes a couple of years from inception to approval to production. Hopefully they make a uniform that’s slightly retro.

Here’s the link to that interview: http://www.knbr.com/fitzBrooks/archives_2007.html
Scroll to Thursday, August 2nd

Please CHANGE the colors. ORANGE does not look good. (Especially the road jerseys)

Hope that helps.

as long as the designer isn't from Washington

those Washington Wizard uniforms have to be the ugliest around. Whenever I see them, it feels like they should have roller skates on instead of sneakers.

I like the name the way it is—Golden State has class. Bay Area is nondescript and there are other states with “Bay areas” (Florida) as well.

change the jersey colors back to blue and golden yellow. but keep the dazzle, and not the polyester mesh. at least they would look retro but have that shiny look. thing i dont get why is the floor all with yellow and stuff and its not even in the team colors. they made the floor all retroed but didnt change the jersey. oh well

Warriors Name Uniforms

I think the team should go with the name Golden State Warriors and return with the Yellow home and blue away uniforms. I would also lose the black sneakers since it makes the players seem slower or is it just a marketing think to get kids to buy black sneakers?
Is it a white thing or black thing or just a generational thing?Anyway, the “W” with the lighting bolt just isn’t the same as saying your team is “The Golden State Warriors” and we take no prisoners.
I also think the team needs help at power forward and needs someone to backup Baron Davis. He played to many minutes and got worn out at the end of the season.

by dtluby on May 14, 2008 2:12 PM PDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

It ain't broke, so quit calling for fixing it already

You people are sad. We got the best uniforms in all of sports and you want to change it to something stupid. It’s the perfect balance between simplicity and liveliness, and you all want boring and ugly. The Thunder theme as it is now works just fine.

The whole retro thing needs to die. The “Shitty” jerseys are overly gimmicky, dated, and beyond tacky, much like 95% of throwbacks. We need to keep up the sleek, futuristic theme and navy blue. No home yellow—the Lakers are the only team that can pull that off without looking stupid.

If there’s any changes coming, minor simplification is all that is needed. Overhaul is the last thing that should happen, especially backwards-thinking overhaul.

As for the name, it’s fine as it is, but I wouldn’t mind the Oakland Warriors. It reminds everyone where the team plays, especially to schizoid football/baseball fans who are bad at geography (i.e. SF fans who illogically hate Oakland teams and vice versa but still cheer the Warriors and Sharks).

by J-Triumf on May 15, 2008 1:18 AM PDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

New Unis

I think we should try to bring back the short shorts and high socks. The high socks would keep our players calves warm to prevent against excessive calf cramps. Surely that would give us a slight advantage over other teams. Also, the short shorts would aid in our mobility since we’re a fast breaking team and also between-the-legs dribbling would be easier. Again, more advantages. Also, we should keep our current logos and color scheme so that even tho the socks and shorts would feel retro, the color and design would feel modern. Best of both worlds you can say. Also, maybe the short shorts would inspire our players to spend more time in the gym training their legs. And i don’t think i have to tell anyone how extra leg training can really give our team some kind of edge! Cheers!

I pray i never have to use a gun again...

THE OAKLAND STUPID DUMMIES

1) i don’t personally know a single person that likes the warriors’ jersey’s. they are among the worst in sports history.
2) i wish they could be called the oakland warriors. “bay area” is just as insulting to oakland as “golden state”, but of course that’s the point. people associate oakland with black people, and that is the least marketable assocciation one can make, unless your talking about madea’s (insert any phrase here).

I'm keen on the professional basketball club The Golden State Warriors. I don't fancy other clubs.
