Agent says Baron may opt out of Warriors deal [Inside Bay Area]

"After weeks of informal conversations, Davis' agent, Todd Ramasar, met with Warriors officials Thursday to discuss a potential contract extension for his client. But the talks failed to provide any satisfaction for Davis, a two-time All-Star who just turned 29.

In fact, the sides were so far apart in what they perceive as Davis' worth that Ramasar brought up the specter of Davis using his opt-out clause to void the final year on his current deal and become an unrestricted free agent as of July 1.

"After sitting down with the Warriors organization (Thursday) regarding Baron's future, I don't know what direction the Warriors are going," Ramasar told the Times. "Baron is adamant about remaining a Warrior but based on my conversations with the team (Thursday), we have to consider all of his options."

A source close to Davis said it's now a 50-50 chance that the Warriors' captain, coming off a season in which he averaged 21.8 points, 7.6 assists and 4.7 rebounds, will not remain beyond next season after various contract offers that were so low as to be practically hurtful." -- Geoff Lepper [Inside Bay Area]

O well.

No more J-Rich and Baron. If that is so, then we will go PG in the draft. Marion through Free Agency? or Josh Smith? Too bad they have to opt out too.

Boy I miss J-Rich.

Wow

Could you imagine this team next year without Baron?

by Number22Drew on May 9, 2008 10:00 PM PDT   0 recs

We only offered 3 years...

INCLUDING next year. And at under 40M..which includes next years 17 plus. Give it up for Baron. He is a star, but not a superstar, and he is past his prime – with good predictable moves and the occasional savage spectacular that fills the seats – but not the trophy case.

by streetballer on May 11, 2008 5:58 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

How is he past his prime?

The guy just put up career numbers this year. Played all 82 games, last season he was fantastic in the playoffs… How is he past his prime? He´s only 29! He still has good years ahead of him. Not many, but at leat 3 or 4 I think!

F**K REFS!!!

by faetati on May 11, 2008 8:55 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Correct you are! You have

the makings of a good agent! Games 81,82 were tough…not the Baron of the previous playoff year. So which is it? A 50-60 game playoff Baron or an 82 game Baroned Warrior? Where is his sweet spot and for how long can he play there at 30?

His prime? Good point with his career numbers. However, some in the org believe that Baron’s numbers would have been higher a couple years ago (under a different coach…) and what we are seeing is the waning numbers of a great career….the downhill side of the peak. Not Baron’s fault! Just the way the ball bounced.

by streetballer on May 12, 2008 5:52 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Time to pick up

Gilbert Arenas or Elton Brand.

It's Been A Great Year! Thanks Warriors!

TIME TO MULLIN

to stop playing this “MACHO” thing. Just because it worked out last season with Pietrus and Barnes, doesn´t mean it will work with Baron and our core. If he keeps doing the “I´m a tough guy” thing this summer we may lose Monta, Biedriens and Baron! STOP IT MULLIN! RESIGN THESE GUYS!!! They are everything for us. Great team we would have: Belinelli/Azubuike/Jackson/ Harrington/ Perovic !!! NBA CHAMPS 2050!! Damn… it ruined my day!

F**K REFS!!!

by faetati on May 9, 2008 10:40 PM PDT   0 recs

"MACHO"

Where exactly in this story do you get this? So far Mullin has said nothing substantive on the matter. The whole story is nothing but standard-issue posturing by Baron’s agent to maximize his client’s leverage.

If and when we hear from Mullin on the subject, it will be with the same eye towards increasing the team’s leverage in a deal (thereby, increasing the flexibility of the team to surround BD with better talent.)

It’s Basic Negotiation 1A. There are no good guys and bad guys here.

Sign ^^^^ !!!

I just

made a comment on the latest rumor. I also dont agree to resign Baron to a 10 year 400 Millions contract, but this guy is everything for us (at least for now), I think we should keep him (I hope so). Thanks for your comments anyway!! =)
Hopefully you´re right and they are just negotiating.

Re-evaluate your thinking

One of the most important parts of constructing a team in the NBA (or any other major professional sports league) is making sure you receive good value for your investments. Although the NBA doesn’t have a hard cap, there still remains a point a which teams will no longer justify spending. In order to be competitive, you need to make sure that you are getting as much talent/ability (or whatever the hell else it is that makes teams win) for the amount you spend. Its not just as simple as saying “sign all these good players.” Certainly, thats not what your saying but if you see Mullin’s job as being asked to construct a winning basketball team (and say, not just one that will the seats) than you have to at least be willing to be willing to take an objective position and realize there is a point at which it is no longer responsible to continue employing any player (although artificial constraints prevent some players from making what they are worth).

Having said all that, I don’t think you have that much to worry about. Considering the financial landscape of the league, Baron will almost certainly not opt out. The abilities and potentials of Beans and Tay are apparent and I can’t immagine that every effort wouldn’t be made to lock them up. However, as Sleepy is saying, this is one of those efforts.

No big deal

We’re still at the point where we have to ask, “who can and will pay him more”? There may be a couple of teams with cap space to give him more total money over the life of his contract but who’s going to pay him what is due to him next year in one year?

Also, his contract with the Warriors was uninsurable because of his injury history. That may be a factor too if they still can’t insure his injury.

Can’t blame him for trying though. I’ll never get on an athlete for trying to get his out of a wealthy owner.

Storage is for business, or for family.

by bloodsweatndonuts on May 9, 2008 11:24 PM PDT   0 recs

I knew it

both of our star player are going to be gone. Time to pick up my boi Elton Brand and add Chris Duhon. Then, resign Monta. damn were screw!!!!

by warriorfan4life on May 10, 2008 1:44 AM PDT   0 recs

Let him go

I know we’re all attached to one of our leaders, but realistically you can’t make this move to give him the years and money he wants.

1. He can be an elite player, but only when he wants to be.

2. Just because he had a pretty good season last year, health wise, doesn’t mean that he will be again. You don’t give that kind of commitment with so much risk involved.

3. Gilbert Arenas will take less money to make sure Jaimison gets paid, why wouldn’t BD? Not a normal thing, but someone that would, that’s who I want on my team.

4. When asked if he wanted to bring a championship to Oakland, he said yes. When the follow up question was “That means you’re going to stay?” He said, “I didn’t say that.” You tell me where his loyalty lies, money, or the Warriors and fans? (I can’t necessarily blame him)

When you add all of those factors up, it doesn’t make the case to put your franchise’s future on the shoulders (legs) of Baron Davis. When he came to the team, I was lovin’ it. The swagger, the play, the memories he’s given me in this short time are ones I’ll keep. BUT, if you’re asking me to choose between the best decision for my favorite team, the Warriors, or my favorite player on the Warriors, I’ll go with the team every time.

by passionately objective on May 10, 2008 2:08 AM PDT   0 recs

Very nice reply.

Mullin i’m sure, is looking out for the best interest of the team.

I Doubt Baron Opts out still. I’m still putting it at 80-20 he stays until any kind of official comment from Baron or Mullin.

Imagine, if Baron opts out and we can dump Harrington, we could possibly go after Okafor, JSmoove, Luol Deng, or Igoudala.

Warriors, Stupidest franchise in the league.

by kenntoe on May 10, 2008 2:16 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Igoudala

now there’s someone who would ease the pain of a Baron-less Warriors. The guy has Warrior written all over him. I’d love it if we could get him, but I thought he was a restricted free agent - and doesn’t Philly have lots of money?

by centerre on May 10, 2008 2:22 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

i dont know about that

he be lost star like J-rich if he come here. put up great number, but be over looked by the media. His D will helps a lot, but with our D-less skills, it probably even do much.

by warriorfan4life on May 10, 2008 2:29 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

JRich was overlooked because the Warriors sucked

That (hopefully) won’t be the case going forward, thus players on the Warriors will no longer be overlooked by the media.

by Dubs fan in Boston on May 12, 2008 12:40 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

never fear

If Baron does decide to opt out, that’ll put our guaranteed 08-09 payroll at about $28mil under the salary cap (guaranteed salary: Harrington, Jackson, Wright, Belinelli, Foyle’s buyout).

If we re-sign Ellis and Biedrins and backload their contracts, we can pretty much afford anybody we want on the free agent market.

Potential free agents: Josh Childress, Josh Smith, Emeka Okafor, Luol Deng, JR Smith, Elton Brand, Corey Maggette, Shawn Marion, Stromile Swift, Andre Iguodala, Jose Calderon, Jamario Moon, Antawn Jamison, Gilbert Arenas.

And we can still “use” our JRich $10mil TPE to bring in another impact player before the day of the draft.

Baron opting out might not be the worse thing in the world. The Warriors have never had this much flexibility and power in the free agent market for as long as I can remember.

by jlagace on May 10, 2008 4:55 AM PDT   0 recs

who cares

like what everyone has said, i dont mind if baron walks. From what i see it, extending baron for tons of money has more downside than up. WE can supplement in FA with younger players.

The only thing i’ll miss is Jessica Alba not coming to our games.

by naboob on May 10, 2008 9:12 AM PDT   0 recs

oh

god i just realized that! well though she did lessen in sexiness with the baby but it isnt by that much but ahhh jessica alba not here! anybody know a sexy replacement?

So I don't have a signature well these words would do! Who knew that upgrades can have downgrades too!

I’ve had enough of people calling for a trade for marion. It’s absolutely outlandish. Maybe after we trade for marion I can redeem my coupon for a peaceful world and live on a mountain made out of chocolate chips.

by xcoma on May 10, 2008 10:32 AM PDT   0 recs

i doubt it

his agent is just trying to get leverage where there is none. baron is not gonna get 17 mil or whatever it is on the open market, and he’s not gonna sulk or whatever next year if he doesn’t because he’ll still be playing for a new contract

by AJC3317 on May 10, 2008 12:38 PM PDT   0 recs

Another Classic Example

Of a player who wants to stay with a team, yet his greedy agent who receives a mega commission check wants to ask for the highest salary possible. In the end the player gets butt hurt that he doesn’t quite make as much money as someone of his equal because the agent is constantly trying to reinforce that the player deserves the money. In the end most of the time the player leaves and gets signed by another team. It’s all a vicious cycle. I wouldn’t be surprised if BD left us for some POS team that pays him $1 mil more a year. Yet another classic example that the once simplistic entity of professional sports has gone down the crapper due to vulture like agents…Its just money fellas. How about winning?

by gabezgsw on May 10, 2008 12:48 PM PDT   0 recs

IF the player really want to stay.

Wouldn’t he fire his agent? A-Rod did that by ignoring Boras before he signed with the Yanks.

by ejdacanay on May 10, 2008 1:22 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

What do you do for a living?

Are you working to create the best widget producing team, or are you working to put food on your family’s table? If somebody offered you a 20% raise, you’re telling me that you’d be “loyal” to your old job?

Think about $1,000,000.00. 1 million dollars. 10 Ferarris. 2 Bentleys. One “sorry I cheated on you, please don’t divorce me” diamond. That’s a lot of cash. Yeah, they make more than you and I, but I’m sure they grew up in just as modest a setting as you and I. No matter how rich you get, $1,000,000 is still $1,000,000. And that’s only one year, if you’re talking about a multi-year contract, that gets multiplied. 4 Bentleys. A beach estate in Miami. I summer house in Bermuda. I’d let Atlanta pay me that… or Miami. Do I get to play with DWade?

by Dubs fan in Boston on May 12, 2008 12:54 PM PDT to parent up   1 recs

Its Just Money

I can tell that no matter what I’d say, I’m never going to get my point across. Point blank, winners are winners and losers are losers. If I could be a winner and keep my mega million dollar contract to better my team, I’d do it. Be a continual loser for a 16% pay increase, well I’d still be a loser with a slightly fatter pocket.

BTW, hows my boy OJ Mayo looking right now-LIKE A TOTAL GREEDY DUMBASS!!!

by gabezgsw on May 12, 2008 1:43 PM PDT   0 recs

It's not that easy

You can’t just “sign up for a championship” by taking less $$. Look at Karl Malone and Gary Payton on the Lakers. Being on a winning team is never a certainty.

Also, which would be considered a better success for Player A:

A) Being surrounded by all stars, but playing few minutes, making the playoffs, and being second (or third, or fourth) fiddle and getting little credit for the team’s success.
B) Being surrounded by a good team, playing your heart out, but not getting the credit you deserve because of an “up and coming phenom” who’s now getting paid more than you anyways.
C) Being surrounded by a raw, young team that never won anything and taking them to the playoffs the following year based solely on your contributions, meanwhile earning the love and devotion of a fanbase and a whole bunch of moolah.

Don’t confuse personal and team success.

by Dubs fan in Boston on May 13, 2008 12:36 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Actually

I shouldn’t blame Mayo per se. The entire 1 mandatory year in college is a total joke. It is sort of unfair that “NBA Pimps” are coming up to 14 year old boys hoping to take them under their wing so they can later reap the rewards of a mega million dollar contract when the kid does in fact reach the NBA. Regardless, Mayo knew what he was doing, so did his “NBA Pimps” he was hanging around with-that’s why I call him a dumb ass. He’s jepordizing his career. All of them are greedy, mostly the “Pimps”, but Mayo does have to hold some responsibility for his own actions-like taking $30,000 before he set foot on a NBA basketball court.

This is where I find it sort of crapy that sports is more about capitalism rather than competition.
