Javaris Crittenton

Although Monta Ellis is likely to be a future all-star, the question of whether he is a point guard or shooting guard is floating around. He is a good creator for himself, but not other, and it appears he may never be a true point guard. Most of his assist last year were from dribble penetration which lead to kick outs for 3s. So if Monta is a 2, then he becomes quite a high maintainence player, becase he can't guard shooting guards due to his size. A player like Baron Davis is a guy who has the size to guard SG. But Baron will be gone in the next 1-3 years and we will need a new big point guard to guard SGs. Some people think a trade for Derek Rose is the answer. I'm not saying that it is not. But how about this: We keep Baron for atleast 1 more year, and for our point guard for the future, we trade the 14th overall pick and Marco Bellineli for Javaris Crittenton. At 6-5, 200 pounds, he is the ideal point guard for the warriors. He has a very soild jump shot and is an average 3 point shooter. He has an amazing first step and is very explosive. He is known to be a good passer and a smart decision maker. In college he did not have a very good assist to turnover ratio, but he has improved in the nba. From the Grizzly's standpoint, they nt only get there wish of 3 first rounders, but they get a guy who can start, and allows them to trade miller with little to lose. The salaries of the two are practically the same, and the grizzly's have kyle lowery and mike conley at point guard anyways. Now we have Baron to show Javars how to run the show and in a few years, we will have an amazing back court.

I'm not a big Marco fan, but

him plus the 14 seems like an awful lot to give up for Crittenton.

Hm.
In college he did not have a very good assist to turnover ratio, but he has improved in the nba.

Crittenton’s NBA assist/TO ratio is 0.9. As in, more turnovers than assists. And he didn’t shoot particularly well from the field (42%), 3 pt land (27%), or the stripe (69%). His one glimmer of a saving grace statistically is a solid rebound rate: 5.8/36 min.

Given his size and athleticism for a PG, I’m sure he still has “potential,” but Belinelli + #14 seems like a huge overpay. As deep as this draft seems to be, I wouldn’t give up #14 for him straight up. I’m not a big Marco fan, but I don’t think he has negative value quite yet.

Assist/Turnover

But as a memphis grizzly, he did a lot better. It may seem like a lot and I wish they would take ust Belinelli, but if Monta is going to be a 2, then we need a big point guard, and good points guards are hard to ind in this league, let along pgs over 6’3, 200 pounds.

According to the comminsioner of the nfl, 104 people retired last year. 7 due to age, and the rest because of Patrick Willis

As a Griz, his A:TO was 1:1,which is abysmal for a point guard. It’s the sort of ratio you hope for in a big man. It’s the sort of ratio that says “18 win season” in your point guard.

It’s true that Monta as a traditional 2 guard means you’ve got some matchup problems on defense, but I’d still rather team him with a good pointguard who isn’t very big than a substandard one that’s bigger.

anyone know the story ...

on the Clippers not exercising the option on Livingston? are they just thinking they can resign him for less or are they ready to cut ties with him completely? I figured this would be a semi-appropriate place to ask this..I’ve been wondering for about a week now.

by sam23 on Jun 16, 2008 7:38 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

From Jon Abrams in today's LA Times —
After nearly a year and a half of rehabilitation, Clippers point guard Shaun Livingston has been medically cleared for basketball-related activities.

Livingston, 22, has played two games of one-on-one this past week and his seriously injured left knee has improved to the point where is now dunking. The odds of him being cleared to play in the Las Vegas summer league, however, remain small.

Livingston injured the knee Feb. 26, 2007, in a game against the Charlotte Bobcats. He missed the rest of that season and sat out the entire 2007-08 season.

Livingston will become an unrestricted free agent on July 1 if the Clippers do not offer him a salary starting at $5.8 million. The team is still waiting to see how he progresses before making the decision, but will probably attempt to resign him at a lesser price.

22 YO

It’s crazy to think this guy is still only 22.

Comeback

If management thinks that there is even a 50/50 chance of a return to form they should make a run at him. i can’t imagine that the price would be very high and the possible upside is almost too good to think about. Monta playing next to a 6’7 true PG with great court vision and the ability to guard the two… oh yeah.

problem

teams can just pack it in against a backcourt of Livingston and Ellis, neither can shoot the 3 well

50/50 chance of a return to form?

Has any player ever fully recovered from such a severe injury and gone on to have a high caliber career?

by Skeptic con Urquell on Jun 17, 2008 9:24 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Return to form

Good point. He likely will never have the athleticism he did before the injury. The good news is that his strengths even before the injury were his court vision and long frame which allowed him to see over the defense. He was never really that explosive, so as long as he can find a way to stay in front of SG’s I think he could still be a good match.

The big question is will he be able to guard the 2 spot after the injury. This is where the gamble is. If the answer is yes than we have a major plus for our team. If the answer is no then we are out 2-3mil for two or three years. If the team doctors give a thumbs up I would probably take that risk.

3pt Range

I’m sure that either Ellis or Livingston could add that to their game in time.

I’m thinking kinda long-term here. I know that Livingston wouldn’t’ be a high caliber player next year under even the best of circumstances but I think he could eventually be a nice match with Monta even factoring in a decrease in athleticism. As long as he can handle the ball, initiate the offense and guard the 2 spot I’d be happy.

The other nice thing about the situation would be that he would be playing behind Baron for at least one season which would relieve some of the pressure to play big minutes anytime soon. If I’m Shaun, I’d look at this as a pretty nice place to try to resurrect my career.

+1

It does seem like a nice fit for everyone. I thought I had heard the Clips had decided not to pick up the option on him, but maybe I misunderstood. Cant imagine they wouldnt exercise the option if his health status is ok, given their gaping holes in the backcourt.

by sam23 on Jun 17, 2008 7:17 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Your probably right

I doubt they would have passed if he was making the kind of progress they were hoping for. I guess the seriousness of his injury makes this a long shot but I would hope that the front office is at least putting some feelers out there.

I don’t really know what there is to recommend Crittenton so far as anything other than a project. He hardly played last year, but his limited PT didn’t exactly suggest he was on the fast track towards taking charge of a franchise. If he were essentially free, he’d be worth a test drive, but I don’t see him being worth a #14 pick. He certainly wasn’t a year ago and his rookie year didn’t do much to suggest he’s a better bet now. I worry about point guards with more assists than turnovers.

He didn’t play much, but 600+ minutes is enough to show that at this point, getting the ball to a guy for a score isn’t something he’s figured out to do. (OK, let me clarify: getting the ball to a guy for a score on the same team isn’t something he’s learned how to do. I don’t know how many of his turnovers resulted in easy baskets going the other way.)

Yes, he’s got the size to be something of a force , but that’s not a whole lot to base things on. I don’t believe he’s special enough to blow our own draft choice to get him.

It's not a point guard we need

Especially for next season, or for as long as Baron and Ellis are both playing a lot.

A 2-guard, or at least someone with some serious size (6-5 or longer w/ some bulk) who can handle the ball under pressure and create a little.

Monta Ellis is only 22 years old and still truly learning the game of basketball at the NBA level. He was asked to focus on putting points on the board this year, at the expense of creating for teammates (and playing tougher D). Hopefully he will continue to develop other parts of his game, and there is no reason to think he wont become more comfortable as a distributor.

If Baron isnt on the floor, we would be wise to surround Monta with strong ball handlers, and a good match would be a bigger guard who could d up for stretches on guys like Kobe, B. Roy, Ginobili, etc. Pietrus never had the handles, and even Buike wont ever have the offensive creativity.

Besides, Crittenton’s game projects too close to Monta’s. If anything, we should try to trade up in the draft to grab Eric Gordon (if he falls outside of the top eight).

Humm....

You mean we should get an all star to pair with Monta? It just might be crazy enough to work!

If anything, we should try to trade up in the draft to grab Eric Gordon (if he falls outside of the top eight)

You think Crittenton’s game is too close to Monta’s, but Gordon is a better match?

Anyways… Monta is definitely young and learning. He was a little derailed before the season last year, so hopefully he can keep working in the offseason and improve his range, D, and passing lane identification.

Critt

If I were running the Warriors Draft (God help us all) I would have taken Critt last year instead of Marco, but at this point I really don’t see what Javaris has done to change Mullin’s mind about him. If he wasn’t interested last year when we had the chance to pick him I don’t think he will want to give up the player taken one spot ahead of him and this years pick.

I took a look at it...

It’s a little jumbled and covers multiple topics. If you meat it out and rework some of the paragraphs, I’m sure they’ll let you post it.

While I agree that the old format was fine (if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it), the new format is nice. They would also routinely delete posts/comments that were offensive/unintelligible before the switch. It’s still the same people running the website anyways…
