Jason Thompson

Checking around the net for Warriors news and a name that keeps popping up is Jason Thompson.

Usually one rumor is not worth listening to, but this one has been persistent and somewhat abundant.  I like the idea of Thompson but not at 14.  I'd be much happier with a trade down to somewhere in the 20-25 range then grabbing Thompson rather than blowing the 14th pick on a guy that should go much lower.

i like thompson

I like a trade down into the 20’s to nab him or JJ Hickson.

how about drafting him at 19

Hey, about about trading Harrington to Cleveland since they are interested and then we can draft at 14 and take a more NBA ready big man at 19. Nellie doesn’t like Harrington that much anyway and he’d do well with the Cavs.

CWebb is undoubtedly the answer but I forgot the question.

Not bad

I read some talk about this on scout, and I don’t mind the idea of Al for AV plus one of Smith/Jones/Pavlovic and the #19 pick, I’m just not sure that Clev would make that deal without us including our pick. They would have to be pretty high on Al. Although, to lend some merit to the rumor Al would instantly be one of their best scorers.

It’s not spectacular but I think it would probably make us a better team especially if Wright is able to contribute offensively.

There are many obstacles to acquiring Varejao, not the least of which is his trade veto power that runs through Dec. It doesn’t mean he wouldn’t come here, but it’s an obstacle. The “interest” from Cleveland is still rumormill interest, mostly propagated by Vescey, who is similar to Chad Ford in that what he says has little chance of actually happening since he appears to make it up to fill column space.

If Cleveland does value Harrington enough to send us Varejao, the cap match and a pick, pull the trigger! Varejao isn’t flashy and does duplicate Biedrins way too much, but he’s got a valuable skill in rebounding that we need and, at his price, would help more than Harrington.

mike

How many missed layups and putbacks by Al do you think it would take for LeBron to snap and choke-a-b*tch?

Jason Thompson

would be an excellent value pick, just not at 14. If we were to somehow acquire a 2nd first rounder, or trade down to get him, then let’s do it. #19 sounds about right. As far as J.J. Hickson, likewise, but maybe in the early-mid 20’s.

Trading down works well in the NFL when the talent eval at the top is less certain and there are so many players per squad that late picks are likely to be pressed to contribute. In the NBA where the odds of anyone taken after the top of the lottery being a star is low and the odds of even mid to first round draft picks never making an impact is pretty high, trading down usually minimizes the already low chance of landing a contributor.

I suspect that so much of the “he’d be a good pick at X but not at Y position is fear-based, the need to make a pick that everyone agrees with in case the guy is a bust. “Well, everyone else saw him as a late lottery pick, so he would have fooled everyone.”

If Thompson is likely to be a contributor, what difference does it make if he’s taken at 14 or 19? The rookie salary scale means you pay #19 a fraction less. Most teams aren’t really interested in ‘trading up’ from 19 to 14 such that they’re going to give much value out of that small, nearly insignificant change in odds of a guy being worthwhile, so the trade down to take the guy you want plus get something isn’t likely to bring a big something.

As for the actual player taken, it doesn’t matter where he’s taken in terms of the player he’ll become. He’s still the same guy. If he’s not going to be a contributor, picking him at 14 or 19 doesn’t matter. The question to ask is if he’s taken at #14, does this mean that he’s being taken over a guy who has more potential or is more likely to realize the potential. If someone projects at 19 or beyond, reality is that he’s got a low chance of doing anything in the Association.

+1

right, why would cleveland, or anyone else below swap picks with us at 14?
i’m not sold on thompson or any workout wonder, but if he’s right, pick ‘em where you can.

While that may be true...

If you really like a player who other teams don’t really like and you know another team behind you really likes a player that’s other teams ahead of them like, you can use that to your advantage. Not as big of an advantage as, say, holding the #2 spot this year and not being in love with Beasley, but still an advantage. Maybe you can get Kosta’s contract off the books, maybe you can pickup a solid bench player. If you’re going to pick a player at 14 and you know he’ll be available at 25, but you can get the guy with #20 to give you something to switch. It’s not mind blowing, it’s probably not going to change the course of the future, but it’ll help out in some way, and that’s the point.
