the SAVE BARON DAVIS thread
With all of these crazy pistons rumors out there I wanted to create something dedicated to the man who brought basketball back to life in the bay area. And his name is Baron Davis.
It makes me so angry to hear people talking about how they are ok with us getting rid of baron. I understand that his financial situation is a little tricky and that we are trying to get someone for him before he becomes a free agent and we get nothing. BUT SHOW THE MAN SOME RESPECT.
All of you out there who love the warriors as much as I do should not want to get rid of baron after all hes done for us. Re read that statement. All of you out there who love the warriors as much as I do should not want to get rid of baron after all hes done for us. Remember all those years where we were the laughing stock of the NBA, when we never made the playoffs nor thought about winning 50 games, when we never were shown on sportscenter?
Forget the money, forget the draft, forget the opt out bs. BARON is a class act and should be treated the same by us bay area warriors fans, and that is by showing support for Baron and not getting behind the idea of getting rid of him. SAVE BARON DAVIS.. plus I dont get why we cant just trade for Sheed alone!
This FanPost is a submission from a member of the mighty Golden State of Mind community. While we're all here to throw up that W, these words do not necessarily reflect the views of the GSoM Crew. Still, chances are the preceding post is Unstoppable Baby!

Heart and soul of the magic
+1…and it’s crazy how folks have such a hard on for the young bucks on this team. Really!!?? A one dimensional albeit athletic center, a speed freak who possesses super body control around the rim but a penchant for disappearing on D and a twizzler thin leaper who has yet to prove anything? I realize that these descriptions somewhat simplify our confidence in their potential but, who can deny that it is Baron’s swagger, confidence and determination that has allowed this team to over-achieve. Let us not forget the value of an on the court leader who infuses his team with a winner’s edge…the most important intangible in sports.
If a deal is to be made to improve this team over the next several years, it has to involve expendable players with promise (see BWright) not the arteries that pump the lifeblood into this team. Let’s not lose the nose to spite the face…

Baron’s swagger, confidence and determination was hallow w/o J-Rich! Think about it.
Monta needs Baron…But it was Baron that needed J-Rich!

This may draw some ire...
I loved watching and miss JRich’s workman’s approach to the game and to his commitment to the Warriors but, he was/is not a team leader. JRich leads by example but does not possess and/or exemplify the natural qualities of a leader. He was never a vocal “locker room guy” (this is well-documented) and certainly hasn’t shown what I referred to as the winner’s edge. I can recall JRich choking on many free throws late in winnable games that led to GSW losses (the year after he was given his big contract comes to mind). That said, JRich did represent a soul and underdog mentality in 06-07 that was essential to the team’s attitude. I’m sorry that JRich is no longer with the team but don’t buy the JRich as an irreplaceable piece of Warrior magic. Baron, on the other hand, has some rare qualities that few outside of the top tier of NBA talent exude.
NBA basketball is a game of intangibles often overlooked by most folk. Skill is strong almost uniformly across the league, it’s a swagger, attitude, knowledge and confidence that push teams over the hump. Take this year’s NBA finals. Were the Celtics a more talented team? Not in my book. Did they show us a mental toughness and winner’s approach that pushed them over the top? That’s what I contend.
I do agree with you that we miss JRich’s heart.

I'd give up Baron
in a heartbeat, but only if it was definitely worth it (ie, not Rasheed/Billups)

I Understand
Baron is the man and he is a fan favorite. I give him total respect for all he’s done here in the Bay! But like all trades we’ll (the fans) get over it. We will start loving the players we got in return and heck if Sheed and Billups can give us a better chance to get us to the Conference Finals I’d make the trade. And that’s probably a fact. Baron has given us so many memorable moments – ie Dunk over Kirilenko & Game winner vs Boston, and many more! But if we do get the right trade, lets do it! This Detroit trade is actually leaning towards our favor, but that’s my opinion. I understand loyalty and passion of a player is crucial, but if I can get 2 All Stars its pretty hard to pass up.
BTW, I would love to see the Jackson & Sheed together, we’d get so much more coverage. Bad Boys in the Bay! BBB!
The Time Is Now! Win Warriors Win!

he asked to be traded?
When did Baron ask to be traded? Please document and cite the source. I agree with the thread – Save Baron! If we want to see exciting bball in the bay and contend for the playoffs – we need him here.

He never asked to be traded!
And if every keeps saying that Billups would give us a better chance to get to the conference finals, you are smoking some serious crack. Billups couldn’t hold Baron Davis’s jockstrap.
Does everyone remember the Warriors w/ BJ Armstrong and Tim Hardaway. They gave BJ Armstrong the PG spot because he seemed more efficient…. I mean he won championships w/ the Bulls right? He also was an efficient shooter and a former all-star before going to the Warriors. Then the Warriors traded Hardaway because they believed that Armstrong would be able to hold the PG position down with the Warriors. LOOK AT WHAT HAPPENED!
Tim Hardaway put it best when he said in his exit interview after being traded to the Heat “BJ Armstrong couldn’t hold my jockstrap!” and I truly believed it. Look at their careers after the trade. Tim Hardaway once again became a dominant point guard, garnering multiple All-Star bids and First/Second All-NBA team recognitions while Armstrong went back to mediocrity. It’s almost the same situation…
HELL NO TO BILLUPS!

Baron will get his extension at the end of the day.
The dubs are going to sign Monta & A.B. this off season and then they will get together a fair extension for baron once they NEED to make that move. The Front office since Nellie has been around for some reason has gotten a little more savvy, hopefully they’lll show it with the contracts they give to B.D. and Monta without breaking the bank.
Anyway, Mullin knows he has leverage which every smart business uses to their advantage. In this case they know It’s highly unlikely with the current market that Baron is going to opt out and give up 17 mil for a contract elsewhere. So far Mullins plan is working and he holds the cards. He can take his time on getting Monta, A.B and maybe Buke/Barnes signed and during the next season he can negotiate Baron’s contract knowing exactly what they will have to spend 3-4 yrs at 12-15mil/yr. (He’s worth it and he’s got a few more All-Star years in him, maybe the dubs could trade Al and will have room to give B.D. the money, or use the TPE.
I don’t see a trade involving Baron, The Detroit Newspaper is good at starting rumors and I don’t see any real fact in it for trading for Billups/Sheed. Trading your best player is counter-productive, especially after the incredible year he had at 22.3 ppg – 7.6 ast. – 2.3 steals and 39 mpg.
With the current roster we’re 1 player away from being a real threat, you don’t work that hard to get the pieces and then blow it up in possibly Nellie’s last year as coach.
I see a trade but it won’t involve Baron is my guess.

i'd pull the trigger
if someone offered the warriors something realistic in return. As much as I have grown to like baron over the last few years he hasn’t played anywhere near 82 games since 2001-2002 season. guess what he got that summer, a 6 years 84 million dollar deal. That was promptly followed by season of 64 games or less until this year. While some of the years it maybe from injuries you just can’t play through, you do have questions is motivation. Maybe he just had bad luck those years but seems a bit convenient his bad luck ended at the time he is able to threaten to opt out.
But given some of horrible signings(foyle, bumleavy, murphy) Mullin has done in the past few years Baron will get his money. Just not right away.
