Instant Analysis: GSW 2008 1st round draft pick Anthony Randolph
(Since this pick hasn't even cooled yet, please be aware that this analysis is spur of the moment and a bit on the harsh side)
I'm a bit shocked. Tim Kawakami, in his blog Talking Points Memo, is saying that this is who Mullin was targeting all along. He even goes on to state that he sees Biedrins, Wright, Randolph, and Ellis being the future of the Warriors.
My first thought when I saw this pick? You know how in Nintendo ice hockey, you could pick between the normal guy, the skinny guy, and the fat guy?
(via bp1.blogger.com)
We just completed a front court of all skinny guys. And while they might be quick up and down the court, they tend to get bounced around a lot by the fat guys.
Random thought: Does every comparable for Randolph in draft analysis list Brandan Wright?
Yet another random thought: Does Mullin really miss playing with Chris Gatling *that* much?
Tale of the tape (taken from Draft Express' pre-draft camp measurements DB)
Brandon Wright:
6'10" in shoes, 200 lbs, 7'3.75" wingspan, 35.5 max vertical
Anthony Randolph:
6'10.25" in shoes, 197 lbs, 7'3" wingspan, 35.0 max vertical
Let's go to the stats:
Brandon Wright's first and only year at North Carolina:
14.7 PPG, 6.2 RPG, 1.8 BLKs in 27.4 min
Anthony Randolph's first and only year at LSU:
15.6 PPG, 8.5 RPG, 2.3 BLKs in 32.8 min
Not really seeing the logic here, and *definitely* not seeing any immediate help coming from this pick. I have to hope that this is prelude to a trade *or* that some help will be brought in with the $10 million trade exception, otherwise the Warriors haven't done anything to help themselves in 2009.
This FanPost is a submission from a member of the mighty Golden State of Mind community. While we're all here to throw up that W, these words do not necessarily reflect the views of the GSoM Crew. Still, chances are the preceding post is Unstoppable Baby!

It’s for the future. We’re not gonna win a championship anytime soon. So its best to develop and acquire young players so in 3-4 years when they are developed we will have a good squad.

amen
its ridiculous to think this squad is going to win a championship so they’re doing the patient, forward minded thing by drafting raw talent to develop.

What future, I’m damn tired of the waiting for the future. I agree that were not going to win a Title with Kobe and the Fakers still in their prime but damnit can’t we at least TRY and make it seem like were competing now? I honestly see no logic in this pick unless we see in our future Twin Needles.
Speights and Greene would have been “thinking forward”. Outside of Beasley, Love, Mayo, Rose and one of the Lopez Twins all of the other guys in the draft would have qualified in the “young and raw talent” grouping.

Oh I’m sure he can play the 3, hell I can play 3 if I want to but the question is can he do it WELL. And why would we need to draft a project that while some says has huge upside the same people say he’s the most likely bust? Another thing is why not Greene if we needed a 3 that can score/space/run/rebound? At least we KNOW Greene can do all that instead of “projecting” AR might be able to sometime down the road.
Weaknesses:
• Lacks strength
• Skinny frame
• Lives off instincts/Lacks fundamentals
• Forces issue/ Doesn’t know limitations
• Turnover prone
• Cannot hold spot on the block
• Fades away/Struggles finishing through contact
• Poor 3-point shooter
• Shot selection
• All-around defense
• Can he guard NBA PFs?
• Pushed around in post
• Inconsistent motor
• Lacks awareness
• Always on losing teams
• Intangibles?
• Abnormally high bust potential
I’m not bashing AR I’m sure he’s a great guy to be around and I pray that he’ll come around and shut all of us up with his play. I’m just bashing the fact that out of all the people that we could have drafted we picked the one guy that’s younger and is even rougher than B. Wright was when he came out of college. Also almost all draft comparisons compare him to B. Wright, a kid that has yet to play significantly in the NBA and that we already have!

Ahh.. What?
AR can play the 3 which some of you don’t seem to get.
He’s too small to defend, he has NO BALL HANDLING SKILLS
So he’s 6’ 10 and he is too small to defend the 3? Sure he could use a few pounds but he is 18 yrs old, he’ll measily add 20-25 lbs over the next year or two.
And he mostly definitely has ball handling skils. His problem is that he is careless and has a lot of turnovers. Being the best player on a team in flux lead to him taking a lot on his on. Hopefully he can improve there but I your characterization is flat out wrong.

Don’t remember him being the best player on LSU. Do remember him being on a team that was incredibly selfish.
I agree that he can definitely handle the ball but if we are to go by that then I’m even more confused. Speights has everything Randolph is projected to have minus his ball handling. I will take proven scoring/shooting/rebounding/defense over projected all of the above plus ball handling.

he does have handles
All the scouts say one of his best strengths is his ability to handle the ball for his size (something Brandan Wright didnt have) He’ll play the 3, and give us a lot of length. His length at the 3 spot will help offset his low weight (and weight is less of an issue at the 3, look at Tayshaun)

This is actually a smart move Imo
because he (Mullin) gave us the chance to see not one but two players that can become new KG or CB (and i bet at least one of them will succeed).
So now we have 100 % better chances for this scenario to happen. There are many good players left in the second round to fill our needs right now (second round is our first LOL).

Never tell me the odds!
I appreciate the optimism, and like you I’m pretty happy with the pick, but that’s not quite how the odds work. Let’s assume, very optimistically, that Wright has 60% chance at being as good as Bosh, and that Randolph has a 40% chance at same. I’m sorry to report that that doesn’t mean the chances of at least one of them being is good as Bosh is 100%. The chances of that would be precisely 76%. How I arrived at this figure is left as an exercise for the reader. :-)

we aren't asking for a championship team, yet!
We want a team that can compete with the big dogs, mix it up, and maybe go a couple rounds in the playoffs. Then, assuming the youngs develop and we make moves we can start talking championship in a few years. This feels like a step backwards to me – unless a trade is on the way.

I don’t think you can get much better than Randolph. Here is another guy with a lot of potential (which we don’t need) who is going to a playoff bound team. The Warriors didn’t really need to do anything except grab bench players. Let’s just imagine Wright at starting PF (which is realistic)... our bench (so far) would be Al Harrington, Belinelli & Randolph. Not as impressive as it could be but w/ some cap space and a solid starting five, we can think about building the bench. I really like the possibility of trades involving either Wright or Randolph. Good pick.

I'm down for the Bones Trifecta
AB is our non-scoring rebound machine. Wright and Randolph at 4 and 3 as mirror images of each other—they’ll perfect some special 3/4 pick and roll where they keep turning sideways so the defense can’t see them.
Seriously, kind of a weird pick. But IF Randolph really could play the 3 and IF Nelly ever played rooks that could be a strange and interesting team.

Wright Randolph Biedrins
Nobody on this “bones trifecta” can actually shoot the trifecta. No 3 point shooting frontline = poor floor spacing = tough time getting good shots for the offense.

What so now going conventional is a bad thing? I remember that Michael Redd couldn’t shoot the three as a rookie but worked on it and is one of the best. If Wright can get the sky hook to go down most of the time then I’ll take my chances with the floor spacing. I mean there aren’t too many people who can defend a shot released from 12 feet in the air.

they don’t need to be 6’11" 260lbs of muscle to succeed.
They do to succeed at what we need most, a beast down in the paint. The body type of a WNBA center won’t cut it at the 4 spot. We already have skinny Wright not playing so Speights woulda been a lot more usefull than another skinny 18 year old. Hendrix might help but Speights is more NBA ready. If we can trade Wright, Randolph, or Bellynellly for a point guard or a real power forward then maybe the picks weren’t wasted?

Not saying Wright and Randolph will become either but they have similar body types of those 2 beasts so body types mean less than actual skill.
I wanted them to pick Speights but can understand the rationale for picking up Randolph because he is simply too tantalizing to pass up at 14.
Not sure how many dominant big men could be traded for at this point without dismantling half our roster. Simply put, Harrington + Wright + Randolph probably still could not net a Brand in return. Only thing to do is hope Wright and Randolph figure it out sooner rather than later.

Just have to ask
Are NBA players allowed to take supplements? Load AR and BW full of mustletech products and viagra for 5 months should pack on about 20lbs each and the dubs are doing damage.
“It’s hard to find a guy his size who can shoot like he can and handle the ball like he can. He’s got a long way to go, but the talent is there. He’ll put on some weight."
Would be nice if he developed a shot and became a oversized Tayshaun Prince. In other words Chris Bosh. Once he develops a shot, he may be able to play the 3 but I doubt it. I see either him or Wright being traded because they are redundant. Either that or they take over for when TMNT leaves.

Right move
In the nba, it is alway best to draft for the best player, not need. He was the best player on the board. He is not that weak. He can dunk over anyone. He’ll gain weight anyways. I don’t knowwhy people are saying he has no ball handling. You all don’t watch college hoops. Kobe averages over 3 turnovers a game in only about 5 minutes more basketball, and so does T-mac, but they are consisted elite ball-handlers. He is lamar odon basically. He does have a jumper that’s like Kevin Garnetts. He’ll be a 3 that turns into a 4 soon.

Dubs did well
Good job Dubs. Considering who was available and what we need, I’m glad we got a tall athletic guy in Randolph who wants to block shots and rebound. Same with Richard Hendrix. Defense first, rbounding second, then offense last. I like what the Dubs did. The last thing we need is another guy who Jacks(no pun intended) up 3’s all day long.

Going with best player available
is a good strategy, considering how the Dubs have drafted in the past. The value of B.W. and A.R. to G.S. & potential trade partners needs to be considered. And since A.R. was a player that people thought would be a good fit with the GSW before the draft it’s encouraging and the bonus is he’s a big Dubs fan! On the flip side of that, him or Brandon could become good trade bait to a team that is looking for an athletic, lanky player. However this ends up, it looks like from highlights, and analysis, he could be a good compliment player to A.B., even better than B.W., cuz he’s got some good handles for his size.
Keep in mind that our 2nd pick (Hendrix) fills the need of the thick, big rebounder, who’s size translates to probably rookie playing time, and the kind of player the dubs don’t have on the roster. (lets hope) Overall, I think the team is better than it was and I feel these guys will contribute on some level next season, or at least be used in a trade for a veteran, using the TPE.

This IS An AMAZING PICK
At first, I was a little perplexed about who Anthony Randolph is because I didn’t watch him play at LSU. After the Warriors picked him, I proceeded to Youtube and watched every video I could find on the kid,
Wow!!! HE is unreal!!! I love this pick and think he has the potential to become a superstar. The most impressive part of his game to me is not his silky smooth jumper, but his incredible handles! This kid can flat out run the floor and shake his opponant like a pg and he’s 6’10.
His jumper has range and his form is real similar to Bosh and he handles like Lamar Odom but with more speed and a faster first step. He isn’t raw or a project in the sense that Pietrus or Wright is Raw. Randolph is polished and fluid. He is raw in the sense that he just needs to put on some weight.
I feel like his game is completely different that Wright. He has more range and way better form on his jumper and he can shoot it all the way out to 17 feet. His handles are night and day better than Wright and is way quicker/ more explosive. The only similarities to their games are that they are both lanky and left handed and good at blocking shots.
I have not been this excited for a Warriors draft pick since C Webber.
by JimBarnett2KevinGarnett on Jun 27, 2008 12:08 PM PDT 0 recs
let's be honest
this is a good pick for 14th, but there’s also are reasons why 13 other teams passed on this kid. He may have top talent, but he’s just not there yet. (As an aside, I like how various writers have said he has as much talent as Beasley/Rose/top five level, but how do you determine that if he hasn’t shown it?)
My main beef with this pick is that it doesn’t do anything for the Warriors right NOW. He can become something down the road, but whatever he will become, he is not someone who will come in and crash the starting rotation.
To everyone who is excited because he can be a 3 or a 4, please remember that for the moment, we have a starting 3 who is arguably the heart and soul of the team. Randolph could conceivably spell him, but not in the point forward role that Jackson plays. So Randolph plays at best what? 10-15 minutes a game this season? Again, no immediate help here.
My other issue with this pick is that it does nothing to shore up the current weaknesses of the Warriors. I was going to put up a poll right before the draft asking if the Warriors should either a) get more of what they got or b) address something they don’t have. Clearly, they went with choice a) here. While I think Hendrix may be a Paul Millsap clone that we have been coveting for a few seasons now, its interesting to note that he played 5 at Alabama, and there are questions about his lateral quickness, in that he is a center in a PF body. If we’re playing compatibility here, where we have a long quick guy at the 5, and a bulkier stronger player at the 4, I’m all for that, but Hendrix by himself is not the answer.
by Hac Man on Jun 27, 2008 12:42 PM PDT 0 recs
......
Well, NBA teams an be dumb. There was a reason why 15 teams past on Kobe Bryant. A reason why 40 passed on Monta Ellis. A reason why 30 passed on Gil Arenas. There is a reason why teams passed on Amare. That argument that 13 teams passed on Randolph so he must not be that good is just not a valid point.
I disagree with Randolph is more of what we have. We don’t have anyone like Randolph. He is a 6’10 freak that can handle the ball like a point guard. I believe he will be able to contribute more than people think. He’s not raw skill wise. He is super polished, he just has to get his body weight up. Guys like tayshaun prince were skinny coming into the league but they had ball skills that made them instant contributors. I feel like Randolph’s soft hands, great handles, and nice jumper will get him on the court sooner than people think.
Lets be honest, the warriors are a few years a way from competing for a title. Getting a huge upside guy like Randolph to develop with Beans, Monta, and Wright was the right choice.

hyperbole
I didn’t say Randolph wasn’t that good, I said that despite his talent, there were reasons why the first 13 teams passed on him. He supposedly did not do too well in workouts prior to the draft (although, in fairness, Mullin was quoted as saying that he did well when working out for the Warriors against Jason Thompson and one other front court player whose name I can’t remember). Statistical analysis from various sources (Hollinger/ESPN and DraftExpress) point to him being more hype than reality right now.
The consensus seems to be that Randolph has a lot of talent. He does not have point guard handles. He can handle the ball well for his size, which isn’t exactly the same thing. I do like the fact that he seems motivated to prove the doubters wrong about his size and any other perceived weaknesses.
I’m still not sure how much he’ll get off the bench. If Nellie didn’t play Wright at 4 as a rookie, he’s not going to play Randolph at the 4. If he puts him in at the 3, its either to spell SJax, or have SJax slide over to the 2 guard for short stints. There is no way he’s playing the 2 at this time. To me, that’s no more than 15 minutes/game. I’d be happy to be proven wrong.
