I say let's snap these guys up before someone else does
No crack-head trade ideas here, and no EBrand dreaming either. Just some middling half tongue-in-cheek suggestions for Mully to, well, mull over as he tries to straddle the fence between actually trying to make the playoffs and build for the future. I'll save the diatribe about the wasted TPE for later. Check out the list, Mullin could (and may) do worse. I say let's snap these guys up before someone else does.

Baron, CJ
Ellis*, Bellinelli
Jackson, Randolph (1)
Harrington, Wright, Hendrix (2)
Beidrins*, Kosta
That’s our current roster assuming Ellis & Beidrins are resigned and KAz, MP, Barnes, POB (there’s a stretch) are not. We don’t have the money for them, but we still have a nice going away prize for Adonal Foyle courtesy of Chris Mullin. Kosta is still on the roster, no? He hasn’t been sent back across the pond yet, right?
So, where do we go for some cheap, un-drafted talent that isn’t likely to play next season anyway and who might become part of the future?
Why glad you asked, here’s Chad Ford’s best of the rest, otherwise known as the un-drafted underclassmen of 2008 (we wouldn’t be interested in any graduating seniors because, well they’ve proven their potential and underclassmen are still brimming with upside.)
http://sports.espn.go.com/ncb/columns/story?columnist=katz_andy&id=3462999
And before you dismiss Chad’s acumen, think about what YOU could scrape up as grist for Mullin, at bargain basement prices mind you! Put this crew up against the overpriced veterans we might trade for or sign, and think about poor Cohan's budget.
Jamont Gordon, Mississippi State
6’4, 225 SG avg 7 rpg & between 13-17 ppg over three seasons, plus 5 apg – he would be an upgrade over Bellinelli simply on his opponents’ level of competition alone.
Keith Brumbaugh, Hillsbrough CC
6’9, 190, SF – a scorer who had some “off court problems” who nonetheless would challenge Bellinelli for minutes. I write that assertively having not watched one minute of him playing. Plus, he fits the physical profile.
Shawn James, Duquesne
6’9, 217 PF avg 12.5 ppg, 7-8 rpg over two seasons. So what he was involved in a shooting, so was Jackson. He’s big, he scores, he rebounds. Oh ya, he had 6.5 bpg with only 2.9 pf pg, shot .528 from the field, and 77% from the FT line. Uh, we could use some of that!
C.J. Giles, Oregon State
6’11 235, C averaged 2 bpg, 6ppg, 5rpg in PAC10 – Ford described him as a “less polished Marcus Camby” who could be absolutely no worse than POB and could pan out better than Kosta. Lots of PAC10 players went in this draft, maybe he was overlooked?
Davon Jefferson, USC
6’7, 213 12 ppg, +6 rpg, who cares that his assist to turnover rate was 1:3 he’s going to shoot first anyway – instant offense off the bench. Think poor-man’s Ricky Davis. No position listed because it doesn't matter where you put him, the result will be the same - perfect for a Nelson coached team.
who would you pick out of this motley crew?!

I'm all
for Jamont Gordon. Hopefully he ends up on our summer league squad. A pretty good example of what we could use next to Tay, but he’d definitely need to work on his 3 ball though.
Not too familiar with Brumbaugh or James.
I’m a little weary of Jefferson, wouldn’t mind bringing him aboard the summer league squad. He definitely should’ve stayed another year IMO and I agree with your assessment with Giles in the sense that he can’t be worse than Kosta or POB, but as long as Nelly is coaching this squad, he doesn’t have a chance.

We need some buike...
I think Jamont Gordon would be the best pick from this bunch. He basically carried Miss State through the tourney. Can handle the ball and play with monta because of his size. I’m glad he can’t really shot the trey. That means he’ll try to drive and create havoc. Definitely put him on the summer team and if he dominates then consider him an option for filling out the team

Good point
on his inability to shoot the three. We have a glut of 3 point shooters/chuckers right? I actually think he’d be an instant upgrade or KBLX.
You have any extended assessment or personal opinions on the other two that hardcore stated, “Brumbaugh or James?”

the rest of the bunch
Again i’m fine with trying them out through summer league. If they absolutely dominate then they might have a chance to make the team. Only players that can dominate the summer league are worth a look. But because of their immaturities i don’t think they’re worth it. Stephen took how many brawls and gunshots to mature… luckily for us just a couple.
Although captain jack is a great player how many teams did he help… okay i got it…the Spurs but any solid player could have won with David and Tim.
i hope i’m wrong with any player that comes to the warriors with a bad rap but who know’s maybe we have a David and Tim just smaller size in Monta and Randolph… yes i like Randolph. i’m a warriors fan, i’m stuck with him, so i have to like him

Just to double check....
Hasn’t Kosta received an invitation to head back to Europe? IIRC, he’s no longer under contract.
by phiLthyphiL on Jun 29, 2008 8:36 PM PDT 0 recs
He is still under contract. There have been presently still unsubstantiated rumors that he’s returning to Europe, but nothing has been confirmed and his agent denied that a deal is in place (meaning nothing about possibilities, but meaning nothing’s in place).
If he walks away without a buyout, he’s still under contract. His salary still counts towards cap and tax, though they don’t have to pay it. Yes, someone can count against the cap without getting paid. But generally, international teams honor contractual obligations to other leagues, so he wouldn’t play elsewhere without agreeing to a buyout, even if it’s a buyout for a dollar.

Two guys
There are two worth going after hard:
Jamont Gordon- The kid can play without any doubt
Pat Calathes- A guy who has a compelling set of skills and has underrated athleticism and savvy.
I’d be OK with Padgett too, but he’s not a perfect fit

asdf
I was advocating that we should draft Jamont Gordon with our 2nd round pick, so I’m still all far him especially if we can get him as a FA. Someone else who we might think about getting is Chris Lofton, if we’re going to jack up 20 3’s a game we might as well get someone who can shoot worth a lick.
Stephen Jackson catches on the wing and faces up against Vujacic. When Jax looks down and sees Vujacic, his eyes light up. He pulls out his nine, screams "Thug Life" and empties the clip, then drives in for a basically uncontested layup.

OH
and Lester Hudson, I don’t know if he was drafted or not though but if he wasn’t he could provide instant offense off the bench. If you guys don’t know about him I’d suggest reading up on him, he’s got a ridiculous story but has all the potential in the world.

Dropped Out
I was told that Lester was going to be drafted, but decided to drop out of the draft so that he could possibly be guaranteed a first round spot next year.

Chris Lofton
Definitely. This guy battled through cancer last year so that’s why some of his numbers dropped, but if you look at some of his stats when he was healthy, they were simply amazing. He’s a dead-eye 3 point specialist, perfect for our team.

DeMarcus Nelson
Local kid, physical guard. I like Gordon but I dont see why he would choose Golden State as he’s likely to have numerous suitors. Jefferson and James could be nice pickups, but we should also scour the waiver wire and NBADL for Matt Barnes types. Undrafted FA’s arent the only cheap way to fill out roster spots.
by sam23 on Jun 29, 2008 9:47 PM PDT 0 recs
This is exactly why Cohan's cheapness has made me mad about the draft.
We wouldn’t have to be relegated to bargain bin-type players from the D-League or Vet. Minimum players to fill the depth on our team.
The price was moderate, don’t get me wrong (multiple 2nd round picks, plus $1.5-3M depending on the slot), but to truly upgrade this team, well, it takes money to get money.
Once, Houston swooped up Nicholas Batum from San Antonio’s grasp, Mullin should’ve been burning up the phone to get to the Spur’s War room. There were also a lot of 2nd round guys who have real good shots of not only making their teams, but being solid role players! Mario Chalmers, DeAndre Jordan, Chris Douglas-Roberts, Bill Walker, are just a few names of guys who fill a need and could’ve been an option if the Warriors weren’t so cheap.
I fully believe the Warriors did not improve this team to their fullest power.
Warriors, Stupidest franchise in the league.

yea I agree
CDR, Walker, Chalmers all wouldve been nice bench pieces on a young team like we will have next year.
