Rumor: Brandan Wright + #14 Pick Available for Veteran Big Man or Higher Pick
From Chad Ford [ESPN]:
"Golden State is yet another team with a tough decision to make. They have a lot of players they have to re-up in free agency. Will their owner spend the money to bring Monta Ellis, Andris Biedrins and Mickael Pietrus back in the fold? I'm also hearing that a combo of Brandan Wright and the No. 14 are available if they can get a veteran big man back in return or move up in the draft."
--------------------------------------------------------------
Here comes a wildly entertaining offseason! This should be a radically different team by November 2008... maybe even earlier.

Brandan Wright
For Chad Ford’s information, the chances are between none and none that Pietrus will be re-signed by the Warriors. They have enough cap issues without wasting a few million on him. Monta will be signed whatever may come. Maybe the Warriors only offer a qualifying to Biedrins and then eventually match his competing offer or engineer a sign and trade, but Pietrus…?
Anyhow, I think Wright could be traded. It does seem that the Warriors may have to decide eventually on either Wright or Biedrens. They are ultimately too similar to perhaps function together.
I think El Brand will end up being dealt in a sign and trade – what about Harrington, Wright and Perovic for Brand? Although the Clippers may get better offers.

70%
Is what I believe are the chances Pietrus being a Warrior next year. Nellie likes his game. Plus he’ll play better because he’ll feel wanted this year with multiyear contract. Also with most of our wing players FA I see him close to the top of that list.

Luxury Tax
It appears that if the Warriors sign Ellis, Baron and Biedriens, they will only be able to afford the equivalent of one MLE and a bunch of FA veteran minimums or rookie minimums before going over the luxury tax. If they just have $4 million or whatever to spend on a FA, I can’t see them spending that on Pietrus. Besides, Pietrus layed down for the first half of the season and took an extended amount of time to come back from a not so serious injury down the stretch. I don’t think he’s engratiated himself with Nelson or management.

Not without going over the luxury tax
The Warriors have bird rights with Pietrus, so he doesn’t count vs. the salary cap, but he does against the luxury tax, which is what I’m talking about. If Baron uses his $17 million+ player option and the Warriors sign Ellis and Beidrins to market contracts, that should be about $33 million added to the $28 million they already owe their signed players. The luxury tax should be at about $70 million, so they’ll start running out of contract space at that time.

Depends what kind of big man we're talking about.
Elton Brand caliber, I guess we would have to do it. But if we’re just going to get a mediocre to above average guy, then absolutely not. The only way I’d trade Wright is for a chance to be an instant championship contender. If we get like a Kurt Thomas guy or a Paul Millsap guy, then I really hope we don’t do it.

Hmm ..
I know Nellie’s a bit of a smokescreener and plays with the media, but it’s tough to buy what Ford is hearing when just today Janny Hu writes:
“Golden State has the 14th overall pick in the June 26 draft, and Nelson said the Warriors have no plans to trade their selection. He believes the draft is deeper and bigger than a year ago, and made no secret of his desire to add a big man to his roster. “

Who to believe? I always will go with the beat writer that hears the same message I do.
Sorry BSPN.

Exactly
The guy I wouldn’t believe in that scenario is Nelson.

believe neither
Nelson doesn’t know himself what is going to transpire as we get to the draft
the TPE is the key but I’d love to hear from some capologists on this site whether using the TPE precludes us from matching any offers for our RFAs – cuz if not, and it’s both Nelson & Baron’s last year, they just might roll the dice just this once for one year … but probably not – there aren’t many KG’s out there this time even if they wanted to

No
It doesn’t. You can use the TPE for a player and still spend money on your RFAs.
It’s just not likely – it’s too much salary and it’s going to lead to luxury tax payments.

well the nba has seen enough of brandan wright to know his value. i guess that’s the good news if a trade goes down. but i dont think “moving up” is nearly enough in return for wright+14 pick…

Joey Dorsey
Hey maybe they can appease The Boston Dubs fan and trade Wright and the 14th pick for Joey Dorsey—all 6’7 of him.
by SlamDharma on Jun 4, 2008 12:52 AM PDT 0 recs
I take offense to that
Why would you suggest that I’m in love with the Bowel Movement? I’m rather anti-First round Bowel Movement. It’s called a “Number 2” for a reason.

i wouldn’t understand moving up in the draft by trading away wright. wasn’t he the ninth overall pick last year? why trade last year’s top ten pick for another year’s top ten (perhaps) pick? i know wright didn’t see a lot of pt but what says next year’s draftee would see any more playing time? and what if next year’s draftee turns out to have less of an impact that predicted? i’d smell a vicious cycle.
and the author’s mention that the warriors, seemingly, have pietrus as the third highest priority to resign this off-season demonstrates a perceived lack of analysis regarding the warriors’ situation.

Moving up in the draft
I think trading Wright would have to be considered in this scenario. The pick to target, that would make sense to me, is Mayo. The Warriors wouldn’t be able to move up and get Rose, but Mayo will probably go between 3-6. If you traded Wright (who should be at least equivalent to this year’s 9th) and the 14th, that may get it done. It would make sense if the Warriors KNEW Mayo wasn’t going to be picked before a certain spot – let’s say 5th.
Mayo is a rookie who Nelson WOULD play a lot – he’s got Nellie ball written all over him – a long guard with legit PG skills who could play the wing. I don’t buy Kawakami’s theory about the Warriors moving up to draft Kevin Love. Mayo would make more sense to me.
I agree with Atma’s premise, however. The Warriors WILL try to make a big transaction along the lines of last season’s J-Rich trade.

+1
outside of Rose and Beasley who wont be traded for Wright and the TPE, Mayo is the only guy in the top 10 the warriors should consider moving Wright for. Mayo would be a great understudy to Baron, capable of giving both he and Monta a breather and would create a great backcourt to build around.

Swapping Wright for Mayo would be counter productive
look at the team after that deal
pg: baron, mayo
sg: ellis, bellinelli
sf: jakcson, whoever they sign
pf: harrington, whoever they sign
c: biedrins, kosta
that would be a lateral move, if not a step backwards. I could I also see baron opting out if the warriors drafted o.j.
Nelson said he wanted the team to get bigger, so swapping Wright for Mayo wouldn’t be consistent.

Nelson
Are you actually taking what he says literally?
I’ll bet you a steak dinner that if Nelson had the chance to draft Mayo, he would jump at it. He loves players like that. Baron won’t opt out – he has nowhere to go. Mayo would take over for Baron the following season.

I guess...
the only way that works out positively for the warriors is if they implode next year, get a high lottery pick for 09 and pick up a big guy with that. but who?
blake griffin and bj mullens will probably get drafted before we get a chance at them. that leaves hasheem thabeet, donatas motiejunas, and patrick paterson. personally, i like brandan wright and kevin love better than any of those guys.
i’d rather trade up for love, use cj watson as the back up point, then draft someone like tyreke evans, demar derozan, or jrue holiday next year. then you’d have a 09 10 team something like this
evans/derozan/holliday
ellis
jackson
love
biedrins
with bellinelli and harrington of the bench
rather than
mayo
ellis
jackson
harrington
biedrins
we won’t be a playoff team as long harrington starts, and no big man drafted from 5 to 10 next year will get significant playing time under nelly or smart.
we need a big man.
ellis

Anybody can say anything they want to a reporter
Chad Ford just wants some juicy news. Some other GM might have said that he’d had some discussions with the Warriors. Heck, maybe he talked to Riley about it. Who knows. I wouldn’t put too much stock in this, especially when he mentions that the Warriors are looking to re-sign Pietrus. Did he not pay attention to the Warriors all season?
by Dubs fan in Boston on Jun 4, 2008 7:23 AM PDT 0 recs
Nooo!!!
Better not trade Brandan Wright, unless for a player like Amare or Pau. This is would be a dumb move for the franchise if we gave him up, for an average big man with some “experience”, like it really matters.
It's Been A Great Year! Thanks Warriors!

trade Brandan Wright for a star pf
I dont really see Wright as our future pf anyway. I think we package him with Al harrington, the 14th pick and some other dood for Elton Brand. ppl got to realizes that he isn’t going to be better than a good player. He will never be the star player some ppl say. He is just poorman verison of Tayshaun Prince, but without the range and Offenese scoring ability. Plus, I dont see him as inside player anyway. He is going to get eaten up by overated Boozer himself.
