Baron Opts Out!
ESPNEWS is reporting Baron Davis is opting out. Nobody thought he would do this obviously. With Baron now opting out, what should the Warriors do, and is it possible they will have much cap space after re-signing Monta and Biedrins? (Does Monta Ellis become the point guard now or do they have to go after someone? Also, ESPNEWS is reporting that Elton Brand is also opting out. This summer just got a whole lot more interesting.
This FanPost is a submission from a member of the mighty Golden State of Mind community. While we're all here to throw up that W, these words do not necessarily reflect the views of the GSoM Crew. Still, chances are the preceding post is Unstoppable Baby!

Clipper fan checking in...
It appears that we are in the same predicament. Sources indicate Brand is going to resign with the Clippers, at possibly the max. How do the W’s resign Davis? We all know only 2 teams out there have $$ to burn, and BDavis is NOT going to Memphis or the other team (which I cant remember now). Will he sign at a discounted rate? Here’s hoping BD stays with the W’s.

all
of Baron’s talk about how we wants to win championships with the W’s and how he loves playing in the bay was a bunch of BS. if baron wants to win a championship so bad he could have played for like 11 or 12 million a year (he’s got no kids to feed like spree so he can probably afford living on such meager wages) and let the warriors pick up some other studs…..barons jus about as phony as the city of Los Angeles that he came from
by 3Kings650 on Jun 30, 2008 7:10 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
yeah
he should take 11 or 12 million a year. That way, Monta and Biedrins will get less greedy and take 5 mil a year each. Which leaves us with room to sign Brand! Pro hoops is a business. Next thing you are going to say is that Gilbert is a jerk because he left the Dubz for tons more money up front. Get real.
by misterjennings on Jul 1, 2008 6:03 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
This could work out for both parties
Say we re-sign Baron for 4 and 48, that gives us at least an extra 6 million in cap space for this year to get ellis and biedrins signed.
Baron could be doing this to help our chances of winning a championship. Improving his cap number for this year could get us another free agent we thought we couldn’t obtain otherwise. Thoughts?

I was thinking the same thing
I doubt that he’s doing this to help the team, frankly. But, he may be taking a risk here, and it’s always possible that it plays out in our favor. I don’t imagine that any team is going to sign him outright to a deal that has a first-year salary of more than $17 mil. Even a four-year, $60 mil contract nets him $15 mil per year on average, with a starting salary closer to $13 mil. You think anybody is going to give him that much more money, with his injury history?
I’m thinking he’s opening himself up for the possibility of playing for the Clippers. If they re-sign Brand, our chances become a lot better of getting him cheaper than we had him for.

still waiting on confirmation of this but…
i posted this in another blog, but baron opting out is no big deal. we overachieved 2 seasons ago, and as such many warriors fans have a blown up opinion on the worth of our captains (davis and jackson) in regards to the future of the warriors. ellis, beans, wright, bellineli, randolph, hendrix…these guys are more then likely going to be the core of our team when we make a serious run at the playoffs, and if we lose davis and jackson along the way, we will likely be better off in the long run

Where are we going? Is this a win-now team, or are we building for the future? The past few draft picks haven’t even gotten regular minutes. Doesn’t make me too hopeful for the future. by hardcore on Jun 30, 2008 8:44 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
If he wants a contract extension, opting out was probably a good move. It gives him some leverage to negotiate elsewhere, a real threat of “I’ll play elsewhere on the cheap to win”, and has him on the market after a healthy season rather than one of 4 consecutive break-down injury plagued ones. But if he does decide to go somewhere else on the cheap, it’s a limited number of bad teams that can offer him more than the MLE, and if he takes the MLE, it’s about 3 seasons before he’d make what he’d make next year by not opting out. That puts him at 32 or 33 when someone else has his Bird rights to give him a bigger payday, else he plays one year deals waiting for someone with cap space to offer him more. His agent would be a fool to do that, given his injury history, age and the realities of who has money.
Baron won’t make more money next year. He can’t. The max salary he can get is 105% of what he made last year or 30% of the total cap value, whichever is greater. Both look to be about the same, somewhere around $17.5 million. No one can offer him more than that even if they had the space. It’s all about the back end of a deal.
All of this means that while he may not be back, the odds of him leaving with us getting nothing in return is minimal. His leverage means giving up $10s of millions over his career in a manner that he’s unlikely to ever get back. I’d not worry about this one yet.

I think he just opted out so he can get a different deal from the W’s, which would allow them to be more aggressive in the off-season. Really it makes sense since we haven’t used the TE yet.
Now if this isn’t the case then we might have the most cap space in the entire league. I want to see if we can sign two pretty good players or one star, and then just hold out until we can match Monta and Andris’ offers. Finally, its still possible the TE will land us someone.

Don’t know if this was posted up there yet but.. Its kinda funny that Baron said He would NOT opt out a couple days ago. Last minute… Magette Opts out… Brand Opts Out Right After….. Baron Opts out shorty after that… Is there a sign and trade deal in the works hidden by a smokescreen?
by mont8ellis on Jun 30, 2008 9:11 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
It has to be unofficial. Teams cannot negotiate with other team’s players at this point. The Warriors couldn’t have spoken with Brand or Maggette to know they’d agree. Sure, under the table things happen, but after the Joe Smith incident, it’s clear that the NBA doesn’t take this lightly and if word did get out that there was contact with either, even if through an agent, it would at the least negate the deal.
It’s just a contract gamble for all involved.

I say we sign Corey Magette. We’d have Monta at point, Magette / Jackson 2-3, Wright, Biedrins. I think this would be a way more efficient squad. Not to knock on BD but this past season he really pissed me off on alot of the games. He took too many selfish shots and played some very lazy defense. Watch Mullin Work
In order to really get paid, Baron will most likely need the Dubs to help him out with a sign-and-trade. If the past year is any indication, our fearless leader has left his Dun-Murphy spending days behind him and turned into a hardass in contract negotiations. With so few teams under the cap, I’m willing to bet that Mullin will be able to either get something decent in return if Baron walks.

admirable your faith is
it’s one thing to hold the line against MP & Barnes when they have no leverage
a multimillionaire star FA PG may have more leverage than they did – he can take less and pick his spot, a championship caliber spot and Mullin is powerless to do anything, get anything in return

I wouldn’t blame Baron if he left. Mullin better have some cards up his sleeve though.
by misterjennings on Jul 1, 2008 6:16 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Mullin isn't powerless...
He holds the key to tens of millions of dollars for Baron. Don’t be silly, read the posts above. Unless Baron NEEDS a S&T unless he wants to go to a worse situation or make much, much less money. If it’s a S&T, Mullin has leverage with the other team (he has something they want and can say no to almost anything). BD does have the option to play for MLE or something equally paltry, but that’d be giving up ~8-9M EACH YEAR. Which is why the above poster said “Let’s watch Mullin Work”. It’s his job to wring every ounce of value out of this situation.
by Dubs fan in Boston on Jul 1, 2008 8:59 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
who's being silly?
imho we’ve just seen Mully’s true colors as a GM and he’s yet to wring every ounce of value out of any situation yet, which is why I commented on sven’s faith!
lack of vision, caught off guard, reactionary strategy (Arenas) (forced into S&T status) all characterize our emperor’s GM capabilities
your logic that Baron would let Mullin effect his choices over $8m is the same faulty logic we all bought into up until yesterday, that Baron wouldn’t walk away from $17m. and I was as guilty as anyone thinking right along with conventional wisdom.
BD already decided to take less money – how much might be a moot point, we’re talking about a multimillionaire who’s already made coin and now wants to choose his own destiny – a chance for a ring.
Priceless.
& for everything else there’s mastercard …
by hardcore on Jul 1, 2008 9:35 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Just think like Baron a little first
He just played 82 games in a season for the first time in 4 years (approximate). He’s getting up there in age. If he plays next season for 18M and gets injured or starts slowing down, his stock plumets. He needs to get his long term contract now, while he’s hot. If he gets his new contract now, it’ll be in the 13-15 starting range and be for 4-5 years. That’s what he wants. He’s walking away from 18M for one season to get 80M GUARANTEED for 5 seasons. That’s just smart business sense. How does he get that? Either by signing with somebody with cap room or by working a S&T with Mullin.
Baron is not “taking less money”, he’s making sure he gets his last big long contract while he can. If he “takes less money” it’ll be 2-3M/year less from a contender. The only way he gets that is STILL THROUGH a S&T.
by Dubs fan in Boston on Jul 1, 2008 1:16 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
And on Arenas
We were only able to offer a set amount. Clearly, he was worth more than the Dubs could offer, so he had to leave. They made a freeking rule named after him specifically to prevent that in the future. It was not Cohan’s fault or anybody else’s that the Warriors lost Gilbert (unless you count Gilbert’s “Shake my hand and give me a one year deal and I’ll sign a new contract next year” story).
by Dubs fan in Boston on Jul 1, 2008 1:20 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
"Hand shake deal"
Even if Gil’s story is true it would have been against league rules to strike an under the table deal. If anyone thinks that the league doesn’t care about such infractions just ask the T’Wolves. We could have been “Joe Smith’d”. How does no draft picks for a decade sound.

don’t have to think like Baron, been there done that and agree with what he did (see post => at right for comments on Baron). Baron INDEED is taking less money for next season – you and I are saying the same thing, except I included that BARON and not Mullin is in the driver’s seat since he can choose his next employer
i’d like Mullin to do some thinking instead of reacting
and I know the Arenas exit situation, thank you very much

I wouldn't jump off the bridge just yet
Baron, given his reputation as an injury-prone player, is not getting a huge deal anywhere else, especially when you look at the cap situations of every team. If he leaves, it’s going to be via a sign and trade, which means you are going to get some nice value.
Now, if Baron is willing to sign for peanuts just to play for a ring, then you are definitely SOL. Problem is, what teams are going to go after him that are in a better position than GS? Would Denver add him just to have the greatest fantasy lineup ever? Does Detroit pull some sign and trade with Billups? I don’t know, I honestly don’t think the outlook is that rosy for Baron if he wants to play for a legit contender.

how can you possibly blame Baron?
He’s been trying to negotiate a long term contract even at a lower salary. We haven’t been negotiating. Just like we are playing hardball with Biedrins and Ellis figuring where can they go they’ll have to sign on the cheap. He could see we weren’t serious about even being an 8th seed playoff team. We drafted a skinny long term project. Let the exception go for nada. And planned on letting him play out his last year, maybe trading him someplace he didn’t want to go as an expiring contract player. Now he’s forced Mully’s hand. Either sign him to that ltc or do a sign and trade or he can even play for a mid level with the Lakers or more likely LAC will let Corey go and Brand will sign for a little less to let them sign Baron at less than he’s making here but to a longer contract. I say bully for him and shame on Mully and Cohan, and his running dog greaser P.R. guy in a Team President’s clothing. Face it, with Cohan we can never put two playoff teams out there in row and really Mully, who sounds like a learning handicap victim, had no gm experience and we got what Cohan was willing to pay for. Hard to be sanguine about this. If we resign him to a long term contract for less with a trade veto by him, we have our hands tied as he gets older. If we just let him walk, after trading JR for bupkis, and then not using the trade exception we got from that deal…well, what kind of message does it send prospective players? Fans?

I can't believe all the hating
My goodness, let’s see what happens and stop all the hating on Baron especially, although I do agree about Cohan and Mully being cheap and short sited. But I am hoping all the haters will be eating their words in a day or two when Baron resigns a long term contract, although as meir aptly stated, he would blame Baron for opting out and playing for another Western Division team. It is clear the Dubs have no loyalty at all and are really looking at the bottom line. Sadly for us the last few years have lined Cohan’s pockets with sold out seasons and relatively huge ticket price increases.
Anyway, let’s see what happens before we go too nuts. After all, it’s not personal but business in the NBA.

The Beard opts out - well planned or still pissed?
Yes, Baron wants a longer contract but he’ll get it at the expense of yearly salary.
Which could clear cap space for more manuevers . . .
Can Mully uncork a good sign-and-trade? Buzz on the Dubs around the league
seems good – most offensive-minded players would come because of the breakneck
style and Nellie. This helps. It gives Mully options.
Anyone who signs Baron-and-his-No-Cartiledge Knees for longer than two years
is a dupe and a dope. Or put it this way: show me a GM with cap space and something
to prove. That might be the sucker to give Baron his moolah.
I am torn about this surprise, but in the end I think it will end up saving the Dubs money., whether they get Baron or sign-and-trade him. And don’t get pissed at Cohen or Mully for holding the line on Baron. Would you sign a guy to a long term deal with his knees?
That Brand – BD – Maggette confluence of free agents makes me think something’s up though.
BTW, both Peter Thibeaux and Chuck Aleksinas are still available . . .

I’d be happy for Boon if he got to play with Brand in LA. I don’t think Mullin deserves a winning team after the way he treated JRich, lying and trading him when Jason had worked so hard to get the team to a winning state. Baron probably took note of that and used it in his decision?

Baron will get a contract offer from the dubs and it could help our salary cap situation.
Baron wants job security. That is a normal need. He wants a multi year deal. That is also a realistic idea. What would you do?
Get $17.8 mil for 1 year or….... $45-50 mil over 4-5 years..
(cuz if he gets hurt this season he may not get a chance to get a big contract has anyone considered he’s only 29…... thats prime for a basketball player.
The media and the warriors assumed he’d stay, well Baron just called their bluff. This always made more sense to me, for baron to take a risk and get his contract. He would probably take 12-14 mil per over 4-5 years and the Dubs could have the contract more backloaded, which would in fact help the warriors and save 4-5 mil this coming year.
There is definately some creative things to dubs can do to keep #5 in Oaktown. Give him his contract, Boom deserves it and we ain’t going nowhere the next couple of years without B.D.
Reality Check.

Bottom Line: The W’s weren’t winning a Championship w/ Baron Davis. Hell, they didn’t even make the Playoffs w/ Baron.
Mullin has been taking notes from the best GM in all of Sports (Billy Beane). Never overpay to sign players for what they’ve done in the past. B. Davis is a HUGE Injury concern and past his Prime Years (w/ less knee cartilage). B. Davis is better off playing for a team like the Lakers, and ending his career as a Point Guard/Movie Executive – The 2nd Coming of Rick Fox.

Deep breath...
Waiting to see how all the pieces shake out before I get too hot and bothered. A lot of shoes left to drop.
On the face of it, it doesn’t look good. There’s no doubt that without BD, and no marquee player / team leader to replace him, we’re a 20-35 win team out of the gate. I’d be kind of OK with punting this season if it looked like there were some bona fide studs at the top of next year’s draft, but early reports seem to be that next year’s crop is one of the weakest in years. How Warriors-ish would it be to get the #1 pick in a Olowokandi-type year?
Baron signing a MLE-type deal with the Lakers would be about the worst-case scenario. Baron signing same with Boston would be horrible too, though the latent Celtics fan in me (they’re my #2 team) thinks it could be kinda cool to see BD and his pal PP get rings together. Hard to imagine either of these happening, though: I don’t think Baron is all about money, but $11-12M (the dropoff from 17 to the MLE) is a lot to leave on the table.
Dream scenario for us: We foist Harrington on someobody and ink Brand, Baron, Biedrins, and Monta to 4-5 year deals in the $8-12M range, bringing us right up to the cap but not over.
Baron
Monta
Jackson
Brand
Biedrins
Is a pretty legit starting five — possibly even championship caliber if Monta/AB continue to blossom and Brand/Baron stay healthy.
Most likely scenario: I have no freaking idea. Fantasy Junkie probably said it best: this offseason just got … interesting.

The Olowakandi draft...
produced Vince Carter, Paul Pierce, Dirk Nowitzki, Antawn Jamison, Mike Bibby and to a lesser degree Ricky Davis and Jason Williams. Even Raef Lafrentz was productive until he got sucked into the black hole of centers that resides in Portland. I think that draft class was pretty solid, as opposed to the class of ‘00… which produced Mike Miller, Kenyon Martin and a whole lot of nothing else.
As for the opting out of Baron Davis… do what you gotta do to get paid. Golden opportunity for Davis coming of a hot year and securing a long term contract. Maybe… just maybe we can get both Brand and Davis to resign for $10 mil each here and have Monta & Beans average $9 mil each… leaving us a whole lotta nothing left over. Sucks as a Warriors fan… but hey. I’m a seasoned fan who’s used to seeing this team get F’d over.

I keep trying to wrap my head around this...
So Antawn Jamison gets a 4 year $50 mill deal from the Wizards. He’s a fine player, but certainly not the most important guy on his team plus he’s 3 years older than BD. So if he gets $50, let’s say BD at the very least gets the same, maybe a little more (he’s a little more of a risk due to the attitude and injury history).
That means that all the W’s had to do was offer a minimum 3 year extension worth $33 mill to get him to stay, right? Seems reasonable I guess. Kawakami threw out a 2 yr $28 mill extension, which Mully supposedly offered, which in terms of $/yr is even better. IF all this were the case, and BD turned it down, I’m not sure what he’s looking for. If this is all about money, is there really anyone out there that’s going to give him 4 yr/$60, 5 yr/$70? I doubt it.
If TK is right and Mully did offer him a 2 yr $28 extension, that would make the next 3 years worth $47 mill. Sure his contract isn’t as long as Jamison’s, but he’s only $3 mill back, plus when that contract is up, he will be at the same age Jamison is now. Even if he falls back to the 60 games a year Baron, at age 32, he’s at least worth the mid-level exception to someone. Thinking in terms of finances alone, this doesn’t make the most sense.
by barrance on Jul 1, 2008 9:59 AM PDT reply actions 0 recs
Baron
won’t fly with a 2 year extension. He’s supposedly looking something in the 4-5 year range and it most likely will be at a minimum $15mm. If I remember correctly, the $17.8 is completely off the books. A 2 year extension would only be for 2 years…2010 he’d be a FA again.
If Brand were to sign on for less (as he’s stated he’s open to doing), they could sign Baron at that $15mm without exceeding the cap.
a 2 year extension would be ideal for us as it’d free us up for 2010, but only in a perfect world.

I can't stand sports agents
There are some greedy people in this world and possibly at the top of the list are sports agents. Not only are they lawyers, but they’re greedy as hell too. I worked off of 100% commission, so I know whats its like, but if it weren’t for BD’s agent, I don’t think BD would of opted out of his contract.
All in all, I think the negociations for Andris and Monta are #1 right now. Once Cohan knows how much $ is left on the table, BD’s lont term contract will get signed sealed and delivered ASAP. I would suspect BD stays for a 4/$48,000,000 contract at some point before he’s shipped off. He’s too valuable to let go. If he does go, welcome back to 1998 my friends. Keep Baron, trade harrington, go after smith
Since teh only other team that is gonna give baron an offer is the clips and they can only give him $12mm/year, we should offer baron a 5 year deal for $60-$65, saving us at least 5mm this year. Then we should trade Al Harrington to Memphis for Javaris Crittenton or Kyle Lowry to get rid of his contract. Then we should make a run at Josh Smith. Also we should let Pietrus go, keep kellenna, let go of barnes ,resign beans and monta. and if we have anything leftover sign an old big like magloire or kurt thomas.
pg: baron/crittenton
sg: monta/bellinelli
sf: sjax/kellena/AR
pf: josh smith/brandan wright/Hendrix
c: beans/magloire or kurt thomas
Or we could let Atlanta sign and trade Smith and salim stoudemire for Harrington and pietrus.
Is there any way we could land smith?

Wow, he just verbally agreed to sign with the Clippers. This was supposed to happen next year. Even if the Dubs weren’t going to win anything significant this year, it was really, really fun to watch them and Baron was a significant reason why. This really sucks, because at the very least if he doesn’t opt out we could have traded him. Now we have nothing to show for it except a fatter wallet for Cs Cn. Would have been good to know he was opting out before the draft, so we could have tried to draft a backup.
This really sucks, I’m going to go watch some Belinelli highlight clips on youtube to lull me into a false sense of security.
Also, Ron Artest is an idiot. Why would he tell everyone that he should have opted out afterwards? That’s asking for trouble. And possibly a discounted trade to the Warriors because he will demand a trade???

plan of action
step 1: chris cohen needs to take the entire warriors organization, fold it neatly in half, and shove it right up his ass.
step 2: i am never watching nba basketball again for the rest of my life so help me god. may the entire league, and every individual that has ever had any association with it, even on the most casual level, burn forever in the fiery pits of hell.
I'm keen on the professional basketball club The Golden State Warriors. I don't fancy other clubs.

hmmm
well two things
first, I would jsut say trade for artest to play SG with monta at PG, but artest is a douschebag so for get that.
two, now we can sit around and figure out hundreds of ways to fill the void of Baron. i think we need monta at the one. just give him one year to figure it all out and he’ll become our barbosa/parker hybrid point guard.

bro
you need to go to Seatown or Canada for that. Well, the long drive will soften the pain of losing BD .
