Rumor: Warriors offer Max Deal to Arenas
Just as the Warriors prepare for a cornerstone to move on from the franchise, ESPN.com reports this morning that "According to a source close to Arenas" the W's made a max offer to Gilbert for 5 years @ $101 Million total (about $20M/year). Gilbert already made the "verbal commitment" (whatever that means) that if the Wizards re-signed Jamison, he would come back. Even if he DIDNT sign with the Warriors, who can't feel a bit proud that we are actually starting to TRY to make things happen? My eyes are glued to the ticker, cant wait to see what is going to happen next
This FanPost is a submission from a member of the mighty Golden State of Mind community. While we're all here to throw up that W, these words do not necessarily reflect the views of the GSoM Crew. Still, chances are the preceding post is Unstoppable Baby!

I'll jump when you jump
Cause that guy is the biggest ball hog I’ve ever seen and I don’t want him on my team, I will actually boycot the Warriors if this guy joins our team!!!!! He’s GARBAGE.
It's all about the killer cross-over baby!

that would be great
he’ll be coming back where it all started.

He's got injury problems
I’d rather keep boom or find a new younger point guard, too bad we dint draft one!

You realize what you just said....right?
Arenas is injury prone? Umm….I might be mistaken, but I was under the assumption that Davis is way more injury prone than Arenas.

Davis is way more injury prone than Arenas.
Either one is a risk but Baron for 5/75 makes more sense than Gilbert at 5/100. Baron is a better point player and doesn’t have to score to be effective. Boom could age gracefully as a Dub if management was so inclined. Maybe the Clips have figure that out?

Edited for you:
Baron could age gracefully as a Dub if his body was so inclined.
Management has nothing do with it, though I’m sure if BD did blow his knee out in Year One you’d find some way to blame Mullin or Cohan. Scapegoats are easy enough to find when you divide the world simplistically into good guys and bad guys.
Assuming 100% health, yeah, I’d rather have BD than Gilbert. I worshipped Gilbert when he was a W, but he’s fallen way too in love with the 3, and he’s too much of a loon to ever replace BD’s leadership, charisma, floor general skills, etc. Still, he is four years younger and has generally been fitter and more durable than BD. On balance, assuming equal contracts, I’d say it’s close to a push. I guess I’d stick with Baron to preserve chemistry.

I cant see how
Gilbert fits with this team at all.
by sam23 on Jul 1, 2008 10:00 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Yeah
Gilbert and Monta would be a pretty absurd combo. I wouldn’t mind seeing it for sheer entertainment value, but it’s hard to imagine it being the foundation for a winning team.
If we’re going to offer a max deal, I’d much rather offer it to Iguodala or JSmooth. Smooth has been much coveted on this site, but Iggy may be an even more perfect fit for Nellieball — runs, rebounds, dishes, scores from all over the place, plays tough D. I’d actually consider taking Iguodala over Kobe or Wade, given equal salaries. Monta/Iggy makes some sense as a starting backcourt tandem.
Monta
Iguodala
Jackson
Wright
Biedrins
Still smarting over BD, but I’d gladly watch that team…

Iggy
I’ve been thinking about him too. Of the guys that we could make a run at he makes a lot of sense. We just lost a star PG and there aren’t really any star point guards for the getting, so I wouldn’t be opposed to handing Monta the keys and bringing in a long athletic SG who can handle and pass. That line-up with Iggy and Jack could take a lot of the ball handling pressure off of Monta.
To be honest now that Baron’s gone I’d like to see what kind of hybrid PG Monta could be. He will never be a true distributer but we would be in much better shape if he could learn to exist as a PG (in the mold of Arenas or Jason Terry). Pairing him with a guy like Hinrich or Duhon would make our backcourt incredibly undersized defensively.
I think the ideal situation is to pair him with a guy like Joe Johnson, but since we likely can’t get him I’d take a run at Iggy this year. He doesn’t have the handle or passing skill of a Johnson but I’ve seen him bring the ball up pretty often and he seems to do a passable job. I think between him Monta and Jack we shouldn’t have any trouble running our offense.
The big problem is that Philly would probably match whatever we offer but we should probably try anyway.

Yea, you're mistaken.
Gilbert’s had 3 surgeries in the past 3 years. He’s played a total of 87 games these past two seasons.

Perfect...
It would be perfect if Gilberto decided to come home to the Dubs. While he might be even more of a ball hog than Davis, Nellie would give him all the freedom he would want and he would thrive. Plus, he can play along side Ellis because he can guard the bigger guards when they are in together. I really hope this happens. This is best case scenario that comes from all this…
by psclavos on Jul 1, 2008 8:36 AM PDT reply actions 0 recs
It'd be
a DISGRACE if we offered Gilbert Arenas that money. That is why you’ll never see Washington progress deep into the playoffs because they have $100 million (or will) invested in a player who isn’t a max contract type player and that’s the same thing that will happen if you give him that money here in GSW.
It makes a whole lot more sense to give Diddy 4 yrs $60mm, 5 yrs $75mm, and still have a LITTLE wiggle room to bring in more players to actually compete.
If Cohan will commit to spending money, commit to breaking through the luxury tax, then fine, give Gilbert that type of money and bring in more players to help compete. Don’t fill the roster will D-Leaguers and leftovers from other teams.

Worst case
and a sign of reactionary rather than visionary leadership if all we’re doing is throwing the vault at Arenas instead of Baron
if we are in go for it now, we need more than Arenas & couldn’t afford it
if we are even thinking of pairing BD with another star, Arenas is the wrong one
Mullin is FUBAR if, as pree confirms, this is true

arenas not better than baron
baron has better all around pg numbers – and he is a much better team leader and defender. Gilbert is a nut job – but a great scorer. Both are seriously risky endeavors but I’d take the known entity.
Honestly, this doesn’t ring true at all to me. I think if we do a sign and trade we’ll get a decent PG and either draft picks or a decent big man.

I hope not
I hope it is, as someone suggested, a ploy by Mullin to take Washington out of the PG market. Livingston, Crittenton/Lowry, Duhon, Tinsley, Felton…..anyone else available via trade or free agency? Some sort of a swap involving Al for Felton and a semi-bad contract maybe? Then make a run at J-Smoov. Thats a lot of skinny lefty forwards, but he’s the only guy I see thats worth throwing some money at this offseason. Otherwise save the money I guess.

Gilbert Arenas is close to accepting a six-year offer from the Washington Wizards that could be worth as much as $127 million, according to a source close to both parties.Wizards team president Ernie Grunfeld early Tuesday morning offered Arenas a six-year deal for $127 million, one of two offers extended to Arenas just after the free agency period began. The Golden State Warriors also offered Gilbert Arenas a max deal, according to a source. The Warriors offered Arenas five years for $101 million. The Wizards, because Arenas was under contract with them, are permitted to offer six years while other teams can offer only five.

Potential league-leading scorer…all things being equal, with the current state of our roster, I’ll take the 26 year old. Don’t get me wrong, I love Baron, but from a business standpoint (on both ends) it’s the right move.

Great Points
All around, I would take the cheaper Arenas at a max deal more than Baron for another 5. Gilbert would KILL under Nelly, just the shake up the team would need. Too bad he isnt going to take the deal… but I think we can all be happy with the fact that we at least made the statement

funny...
when the warriors should have paid arenas to stay a warrior and fans got mad at him for leaving so they boo the hell out of him, but when we try to bring him back nobody wants him back. arenas score better than baron and he’s a better free-throw shooter than him. with or without arenas, the wiz would never pass the first round.

No bad feelings
This is a BUSINESS. How could Baron take offense? Didnt Baron make the “business” decision of opting out, while we made the “business” decision to offer Arenas the money? And now Baron would take offense and be out the door.. trust me if he was leaving he already has something in place that offering someone else money has nothing to do with.

NO NO NO NO NO
If the Warriors have any hope of resigning Baron, why slap him in the face by offering another guy a max deal? That makes no sense to me. If Arenas going back to Washington is pretty much a given, why take the chance of pissing Baron off like that?
Could we be forcing Washington’s hand? Is Mullin that dumb? Someone please tell me wtf is going on.

The Warriors already know what Baron’s intentions are, even if it hasn’t become public yet.
If they wanted to resign Baron in the first place, you think they would’ve offered Gil a max contract?
I don’t think so. I think the writing’s on the wall here, Baron opted out and has every intention on playing elsewhere next year. Just accept it.

Yes.
But Baron is ALREADY upset.
Why do you think he opted out in the first place? Because he was happy?
C’mon guys.
The new frugal Warriors philosophy worked great on guys with little/no leverage (I.E. Scrubs like Barnes and Pietrus). But Baron knows he still has some leverage and forced the Warriors hand. They were low-balling him with terrible offers, which has spoken volumes on how much they value Baron.
I don’t blame Baron for opting out, its a high risk, high reward move. But it may just turn out to be the best move of his career.

Baron will be upset but it actually helps us
Baron seems like the kind of guy who would likely be hurt by this news – star athletes in general are pretty thin skinned when money is involved.
But this is good for us in two ways –
We just forced Washington’s hand so Arenas will resign their and we don’t have to worry about him coming here – he may score more than Baron but he does little else better and with our young squad we need a leader who makes others better – Wiz seemed better without arenas at times.
Second reason this is good is that if Warriors don’t have any options out there on par with Baron AND if Baron finds the suitors aren’t out there like he hopes then maybe the two parties can meet half way.
Sign Baron for 60M for 5 years and then in three years work a trade.

See
There is the Problem. Baron isn’t worth 60M for 5 years. He’d be running on fumes in years 3, 4 & 5, and it would be impossible to trade him until the final year of his contract. I’m OK w/ a 3 year deal, but nothing more.

Too many IF's in there.
The Warriors aren’t planning on resigning Baron. If they do, it’s only to work on a S/T. Don’t forget, it takes TWO to tango. Baron obviously does not want to come back, and the Warriors obviously value other Free Agents more than our own beloved BD.

Arenas is OVERRATED!
If there’s one player that the WARRIORS should keep it should be BARON. He signifies what the WARRIORS are. ARENAS is not worth 20 mil a year, he’s not a difference maker, and the Wizards were fine without him. ARENAS left the WARRIORS for a bigger payday so tell his overrated one-dimensional scoring arse to stay w/ the Wizards!

Full circle
Arenas coming back to replace the guy who replaced him…funny, and yet possibly exciting. Baron already seems to be running on fumes considering how the season ended, so getting someone younger and healthier (even if marginally so) makes sense. Maybe Nellie can get Agent Zero to pass more.
Gilbert said he wants to keep playing with Jamison…I say bring him back here too by trading Harrington. Al and Antawn are the same type of player, with the latter being a better scorer.
Once Ellis and Biedrins learn how to step up their defense (and the league stops punishing Jackson over his personal life) we’d have a pretty good starting lineup right there.
Had the team been better managed years ago, the young Warriors of 2003 would still be the experienced and successful Warriors of 2008. This wouldn’t be the same obviously, but it would be a nice touch.

imo
I think the only players worth $20/year are players like duncan, jordan, kobe, shaq(in his prime), KG…... you know, people who can definitely help towards a championship. Typically I would think a Center or Power Forward would be preferred.
Gilbert will resign with Washington and that’s the best case senario for us.
Right now I think we need to just put all our support into our young core of monta, marco, ar, wright, and ab.
they won’t win us a championship, but hopefully atleast 3 out of those 5 can become solid and we can pick us a free agent or bomd draft pick in the future to push us over the edge.
