How good or badly did the Management handle this?
This Baron Davis debacle is just bad regardless of whose side you're on. Now the question should be:
"How do you think the Management handled this?"
How did they handle this situation PR wise?Should they have tried harder? Should they maybe have shopped Baron around for draft picks and/or veternans? Was it smart to offer Gilbert Arena's max money?
Or in the aftermath of it all or the unlikely event that Baron comes back:
Was it smart to just let Baron sign without entertaining the idea of a sign & trade? Was it smart to cave into Baron's demands for a long term (not necessarily for a huge amount of money) deal?
It's early to start asking this question but I think it's highly relevant seeing how the current situation reminds me of when Gilbert first left the Warriors. All this NBA business talk also brings back alot of painful memories of previous Warriors mistakes due to mismanagement.

I think they're doing...
an excellent job. This gives a chance for our young players to really become what we projected them to become. I’m saddened by the fact that people do not have faith in this team when you’ve had so much faith in them before. If you’re a fan you should always support the team we have and believe that our management is and will make the right decisions to lead our team to where ever it is we are trying to go.
Our team is fine, Mullin will make the necessary changes in order for us to be on the right track as he did before.
Have faith.

what if
you are a grizz fan? should you believe that Chris Wallace (management) did the right thing by exchanging Gasol for a bag of rocks? As a Dubz fan, you should cheer for the team but not blindly believe whatever management wants you to.

Management had different plans
Mullin knew that Baron Davis was not going to figure into the Warriors future because of his high-risk health and did not give him the long contract he deserved. Baron played 82 games last season, all of it, and that still did not warrant any love from management. But everyone was going to forget all that and have Baron play another meaningless season. Don Nelson thought he was coming back. His teammates thought he was coming back. Even Baron Davis thought he was coming back. Then, the chance of playing in Los Angeles came up, and Baron is not looking back.
I have to side with Baron, even though I am a Bay Area native, because there wasn’t a future for him on the team. He can now go to the Clippers who have all the talent and have been waiting for someone to lead them to the post-season. The consensus is that the situation has been a “shock” to everyone, so I wouldn’t blame Mullin for not looking to profit from Baron’s departure. It was inevitable that this would happen, Baron just jumped the gun – no quarrels from me.

agreed
The same people on here who want to use Baron 1-2 more seasons as a stopgap until our youngins develop are the same ones who are crying foul about him opting out. The roster is just not going to win it all in the next couple of years, which are going to be Baron’s prime. You can’t be mad at him for wanting to win in his prime before he gets old and joins a stud team for the vets minimum like what countless guys do nowadays.

Good.
Not giving into a long term contract was what they wanted. They succeeded. He was expecting 20 Mil/Yr and no way would I give him that. This lets us have leverage come 2010 and it will likely set us up for a lottery pick next year (Pass 1st PG’s are deep in the draft).

you don't get it
he never expected 20 mil per. He just wanted 5 years so he could retire after that deal was up. Mullin would not budge so goodbye Baron.
When 2010 happens, there will be other big players in the FA market as teams are gearing up for it. Mullin’s hardball tactics and Cohan’s reputed cheapness will not lure superstars to the Dubz.

You don’t get it either. Even at 15 mil a year I wouldn’t give him 5 years. The guy is injury prone. One good year does not take the fact that he was not injury free.

They didn’t handle the PR aspect well, as evidenced by the level of anger towards the front office on this site and elsewhere, but Baron’s timing made that next to impossible. As a basketball decision, I think it was the right one… not a fun one, but the right one.
The offer to Gilbert is the strangest part. I would’ve been pretty tickled to see that guy back, but I don’t get stopping short of $60 million for Baron and going past $100 million for Gilbert. Add in how it looked vis-a-vis Baron, and I’d say that’s the worst move the front office has made in a while.

complete diss
was what it was for Baron. Even if Arenas did take the deal and come back, it wouldn’t make the Dubz any better from a chemistry perspective. Management blew this one badly.

Coulda been handled better
We all knew that the organization was not willing to give into the high fiscal demand of BD. however, the whole situation of how the Warriors organization handled the talks resembled actions of stubborn sibilings, fighting over the cake. First you got two parties holding out on demands, where BD wanted to stay with the place where his career was revived, then you have an insulting action by the Warriors to offer Arenas max contract (when BD wasnt) to show thier loyalty to a player? In no way should a professional organization act this way towards a valued employee.
It seemed as if who would call each other’s bluff first. but in the end the Warriors have more riding on the bet and lost out. BD got his money and will return to his hometown. Warriors however will fiscally and morally suffer from disappointed fans who just lost thier favorite player in the worst possible scenario….letting him walk out the door. Our team now will face another two years of “rebuilding” in the post Nelson redux era.
I blame management for this. Fans as a whole should boycott COHEN for cheapskating this faithful organization for years. We have longed for a successful team and saw the last two years as new life for us fans. but the actions of management has suggested otherwise. They first let last year’s RFA’s of Barnes and Pietrus test the market for thier value. Now this year thier gonna let the market decide on our two promising RFA of Ellis and Beans. these money saving moves will burn the Warriors organization as it will prove how frugal and disloyal our owners are.
As a childhood fan I am thoroughly disappointed in the actions the Warriors have made to help improve the team. our young nucleaus has a great future, but losing BD in a bad way will surely hurt the organization through his leadership and charisma. To top things off, we give championship leverage to the historically bad and arguably worst organization in the NBA? i thought the Warriors were bad post TMC era, but I always depended on the Clips to be even lower and lift my spirits. now the tables have flipped.
Thats enough rant.

You guys are too soft
No wonder we’ve been doormats for so long, there’s no fan pressure on Mullin even on GSoM. It’s depressing how compliant, weak willed, and soft people are about sports in the bay area. Whiny 9er fans, disappearing Giants fans, nonexistent As fans. Hell, the Sharks are a major hockey team with lots of success & fire their coach for not getting far enough in the playoffs. THAT is an organization reaching for the top. Raider fans are a different breed altogether, I will never understand why they embraced that team’s return from Lalaland, but at least they’re passionate about their shit team and organization.
Dubs fans are soft. If this happened anywhere else there’d be an outcry and calls for Mullin’s scalp. He’d have to have defensive press conferences, and be facing losing his job. Particularly when added to the litney of fukups he’s already accomplished. You think if this happened in NY the fans would be saying “ok, it’s ok, get over it” ? If Wade left Miami do you think Heat fans would say Riley’s doing an excellent job?! If Kobe left similarly Kupcheck would be hung, not in effigy, truly hung. Add to that his absolutely inane and desperate reaction of offering $100m+ to Arenas – like that was going to be consistent with some mythical longterm plan?!
You guys deserve Mullin, glad you’re so happy with him.

Yup, you're hard
Hardcore, to be precise. ;-)
Seriously, I appreciate (and partly share) the bitterness, but don’t see the need to question the manhood of anyone who disagrees with you. I’m happy to rip stupidity hard when I see it, but I honestly don’t think Mullin/Mulson have made any major missteps since the drafting of POB (the Kostacoast signing was a puzzler, but not very consequential one way or the other). Given the hole Mullin dug for himself with the Murph/Dun/JRich/Foyle contracts, I think he’s done a fair number of things right the last year and a half. In the case of BD: I don’t hate him for bolting, but you gotta keep in mind that it was his decision, not Mullin’s.
As to the rumored $100M Arenas offer: I agree that that’s absolutely inane, if real. I’d rip Mullin mercilessly if we tried to sign a ballhog tweener guard to $20M per. Has that been verified by any legit source?
Sign ^^^^ !!

it's not manhood, it's judgement and passion
POB was drafted pre Nelson with a Montgomery-style team in mind and the expectation that Murphy was going to be traded that summer
Then, when Mullin could not extricate himself from his self-imposed roster hell-hole and looming volcanic eruption of Baron playing for Monty, he turned to Nelson
Kosta was drafted the same year as POB, and his signing was also possibly a plan to have depth behind an Andris-less roster in the hopes of a KG deal last summer
The Arena offer was widely reported, I think I saw it on NBA.com, Fox, ESPN, etc.
Baron left for nada, your biggest asset and most valuable commodity and you got dick other than cap space. Cap space isn’t worth shit when you spend it on B level talent. If Mullin had any brains he’d kick Nelson upstairs now, hire a NBA vet like Saunders to come in and teach a roster full of young’ns, and hope that the fans “get over it” as well as so many have here apparently.
He’s got a WAYS to go to even get close to balancing his ledger, imo.
bitter? hahaha, I’m so past bitter it’s not even in the rear view mirror …
as an aside, always appreciated your posts sleepy – thoughtful and articulate/funny
