Free Agents: 2009 and 2010
Free Agents: 2009 and 2010
Those who have been observing the Cleveland Cavaliers, Miami Heat, New Jersey Nets and New York Knicks, among others, maneuver to create salary-cap space already have heard about "the Summer of LeBron." That's 2010, the year that LeBron James can opt out of his contract with the Cavs.
But the offseason of 2010 is not just the Summer of LeBron: It's also the Summer of Dwyane Wade, Chris Bosh, Amare Stoudemire, Ray Allen, Tyson Chandler, Manu Ginobili, Richard Jefferson, Joe Johnson, Tracy McGrady, Yao Ming, Steve Nash, Dirk Nowitzki and Michael Redd, each of whom can become an unrestricted free agent in 2010.
And in 2009, the list is illustrious, too: Kobe Bryant, Carlos Boozer, Allen Iverson, Ron Artest, Richard Hamilton, Jason Kidd, Shawn Marion, Andre Miller, Lamar Odom and Rasheed Wallace can become unrestricted free agents next year.
And that's not to mention all the restricted free agents, as you can see below.
Of course, not all of these players will reach free agency. But some will, which is why we're already hearing buzz about the summers of 2009 and 2010.
Take a look and see whom your team could lose … or which players it might ink in '09 and '10.

Yeah
there are some really good free agents coming up and I think the Warriors are one big man away from being serious contenders if monta becomes a good PG
Yep
Too bad the team has no meaningful cap space (in all likelyhood) if Monta, Beans, and Maggette all stay on the books
Foyle comes off
I don’t know the exact numbers for next year because contracts haven’t been signed or numbers announced, but it’s possible we could make the cap room. Foyle is almost 7M right there, and there’ll be a 2-3M boost to the cap. We’ll see.
Regardless, teams like to keep their quality big men. They don’t move unless they want to AND they’re unrestricted.

still over
unfortunately i think we’re still gonna be over the cap. i am no cap expert (as many people like to say) but i think it looks like this
cap this year is 58 mil, luxury tax is 70 mil
i think we’ll get up close to the luxury tax when we sign FAs and afterward monta and biedrins (cause we can go over to resign)
lets say we hit (arbitrarily) 65 mil. after foyle we would still be at 58 mil with the cap at maybe 61 mil. that’s still not good enough to sign good FAs. i did forget about harrington who would give us an extra 9 mil. still 12 mil in cap space is probably not going to be a top tier player. maybe 1 or 2 decent players—no franchise changers.
who knows, maybe those 1 or 2 players will be the missing piece…

Well...
You’re not going to get a franchise changer big man, and we can’t afford to get a franchise changer at a 1,2,3 because we’re already stacked there. We can’t trot out a roster of
DWill
Monta
Maggs
Jax
Buike
Belinelli
Randolph
Al
Wright
Beans
Turiaf
Vet min big man #1
Vet min big man #2
Draft pick
Draft pick
I think we gotta pick up some underrated bigs for depth and hope that Monta learns to run the point or something. That way we can handle things down low servicably, while letting the guards run our offense. Or we can hope that Wright/Randolph learn to be awesome. Always a possibility.
