GM Mullin at a glance thus far
I would like to throw in my 2cents in all this commotion...
First off, I'm proud all you GSoM bloggers and participants are displaying your passion as true Warrior fans, or sports fans for that matter. A lesser fan would have jumped ship with the downgrade of a team such as the one we've recently experienced. But you all have stuck well and true despite the sudden departure of Baron.
Secondly, however, I feel there are too many "OMG!! I can't believe Mullin would let Baron walk away!!" or "I can't believe we've just got ballhog Magette!!" or "What the freakshow is Mullin doing?!" In other words, the pessimism has surfaced and we want to point fingers. I'm reading plenty of knee jerk reactions because maybe it's a subsequent aftermath of losing Baron. I'm one who would like to see how the final roster will look, how things will shape once the reg season begins rather than placing immediate judgment on the team prior to any playing time. After all, there have been surprises in this past NBA season where teams such as the Sixers, Hornets, and even the pre-Gasol Lakers made unexpected jumps into playoff positioning. For a while, even the Blazers looked like playoff team for a bit last season, and the Kings were somewhat above the expected curve. You simply don't know until it happens.
Thirdly, sports fans always have a "what have you done for me lately" mentality, and Mullin certainly applies. When Mullin began his GM duties, he was overzealous to give bad contracts to Murphy, Dunleavy, Foyle, Fish, and even questionably JRich. He later managed to correct himself immensely by trading for a stud PG in Baron, later with Jack/Al, and hiring Nellie, while ridding all those contracts. Now we've come full circle in chastising Mullin again. I'm reading a lot of blame being placed on him for letting Baron head southward. Look... Mullin simply made a judgment call to not give BD a hefty deal because A) his health history B) how much longer can Baron keep up his superior play? In addition, NOBODY in the world expected Baron to suddenly opt out and then immediately agree with the Clips. Most of that was BD's doing. I can't blame his reluctance to ever give Baron a large deal. Now everything our GM does is seemingly in question by the fans because we're all in a state of shock. I believe Mullin's every intention is to make this team as competitive as it can possibly be. After all, I don't think the attempted/failed trade for Garnett or attempted/failed signing of Brand was for shits and giggles or to sell more tickets. I simply don't believe that. It seems like everyone wants to play GM.
This FanPost is a submission from a member of the mighty Golden State of Mind community. While we're all here to throw up that W, these words do not necessarily reflect the views of the GSoM Crew. Still, chances are the preceding post is Unstoppable Baby!

Since when are fans not allowed to criticize their GM
I think that every warriors fan has every right to be concerned with the moves managment has made this offseason. Whether you like Baron or not, he was the superstar that got us over the hump and into the playoffs for the first time in 13 years. To lose him is a major loss—there is no two ways about it.
Furthermore, to say that Mullin was blindsighted is just flat out wrong. Mullin himself said that Baron opting out was something that developed over the last 3.5 years. Baron and the Warriors had different views for the future, views that could not mesh.
Baron left the Warriors because Mullin was not willing to offer him a multi-year deal like the Clippers gave him. And you said yourself that the reason he wouldnt sign Baron is because of Baron’s injury history, but what doesn’t make sense is that Maggette is just as injury prone as Baron. In fact, Since 2001 Baron has played in 444 games to Maggete’s 443. So to say that Baron isn’t worth 13mm a year while Maggette is worth 10 is ridiculous to me.
I know Baron is gone and I knwo the Warriors will be fine, but Baron’s departure will certainly be felt and don’t try to convince me otherwise.
I think I speak for a lot of warriors fans when i say that, I don’t think our offseason was very successful. Maggette is good at driving and getting to the line, but he doesnt address our defensive problems, which is a major issue. He is also not a banger, which we desperately need. But, He does make our lineup a little bigger, assuming monta starts at pg and SJax at the 2 so I do think that should help us out. I am also very excited to see the growth in our young players.
The bottom line is we lost our superstar adn the face of our team. It seemed to me like Mullin felt he had to make a signing to appease the fans and was reckless about how he went about it. I don’t think offering max money to Arenas and Brand (who probably werent going to sign with us) was teh best way to attract a premier player to the bay area. I think that trying to court Josh Smith, Emeka Okafor, or Iggy would’ve been a better play b/c it woudl help our defense and woudl add a young blooming star and even if their offers were matched, we would have space to work with
Maggette is 29 years old and injury prone just like baron. I think he’ll be fine, but I think adding him limits the potential of our team as it locks up 50mm in cap space over the next 5 years.
Also, even though Turiaf is a good energy guy and a decent backup, I think that locking up cpa space with Maggette and Turiaf for a combined 9 years $67mm will not help us contend, but rather prevent us from contending.
Finally, maybe Mullin did trade Speedy Claxton for Baron adn turn Dunleavy and Murph into Capn JAck and TMNT, and take us to the playoffs for the first time in 13 years-all good things- but no GM or team managment, whether its the managment of the Patriots or the Clippers, should be free from criticism.
I feel that Warriors fans are overwhelmingly optimistic, and i think its a great quality to have. I love how we filled the arena even in our worst years, but, at the same time, our biggest power as fans is our rights to criticize and question our managment.
I like Chris Mullin and I like the potential our young team has, but I think our offseason could have been a lot better. And HELL YEAH everyone wants to play GM, as fans taht is our job.
I will be attending our summer league games and will be posting ideas on the GSoM boards b/c i still believe in this team and am hoping for the best, the very same reasons i criticize our managment. don’t tell me for a second not to ask Mullin what he has done for me lately. I know we live in the bay area, but we don’t have to be THAT accepting…
Hopefully we arent done and we can still make some noise this offseason.

Perspective @
Let me put this in perspective gents. 10 more years ;= That’s the Warrior’s MO: I been down this road since 1977: the cycle just keeps repeating itself:
I don’t know how Mully counts, but I seen Barron for 2.5 seasons: so what the H is he talking about? Unless I was having such a good time I lost a year ;=
The Warriors won’t sniff the playoffs for many years to come: I would bet my box of chocolates on it ;=

hmmm
I was expecting the defensive answer I surely got one. But i guess it’s hopeless and obviously it was my mistake to try shedding some positives amidst the negativity. So instead i’ll switch gears in a complete 180 by saying… OH GAWD! We’re doomed! This franchise is doomed! Mullin, what the hell have you done?! He’s crazy! Ok, lets work on the #1 pick for 09, 10, 11 and maybe get into the playoffs by say… 2020?
always faithful,

Mullin as GM has been quite a rollercoaster ride
Lots of ups and downs best describes Mullin’s tenure running the team. A quick look at his good moves and stupid moves:
- favoring Adonal Folye over Erick Dampier (not that Dampier deserved crazy money, but come on…)
- locking Mike Dunleavy Jr. into a big contract
- overpaying Derek Fisher
+ locking Jason Richardson into a long term contract (franchise leader in 3-pointers made within only 5 years)
+ stealing Baron Davis from the Hornets
+ finding Monta Ellis in the second round of the draft
- not making a move for Ron Artest
+ replacing Mike Montgomery with Don Nelson
- not making a move for Allen Iverson (this may be questionable, but top tier stars aren’t this available very often)
+ replacing Dunleavy and Troy Murphy with Stephen Jackson and Al Harrington
- breaking up a hot playoff team by sending away Richardson (quit defending this, people, his absence was felt towards the end of this past season)
- failing to acquire Kevin Garnett (see my comment on Iverson, and also consider the Richardson move)
- wasting time on the corpse of Chris Webber
- not making a move for Pau Gasol (again, see Iverson and Garnett)
+ getting Don Nelson to stick around for just a little bit longer
- failing to keep Davis for just a little bit longer
If patterns hold true, Mullin’s due for a genius move or two soon. But the lack of consistency tends to lead to a lot of strong conflicting opinions from fans.
There are better GMs out there that the Warriors should have been looking at, but there are also worse GMs out there who we easily could’ve been stuck with. With his overall track record, Mullin deserves neither awesome praise nor angry hate, despite individual moments suggesting otherwise.

You're being pretty unfair there
Locking up JRich to an obscene contract was not a PLUS. Jason was a plus player, but not for what he was going to be paid. Sorry.
All the “not making a move” crap is annoying. He also didn’t make a move for the #1 pick when LBJ was available, or the #5 pick that year which could have been DWade. At the time Ron Artest was available, he was freshly off his SEASON LONG SUSPENSION. What did Denver give for Iverson? Where are they now? Yeah… thought so. “Oh, but we’d be different, you’d have seen… we would have won the championship”. We tried to get Garnett. I’m happy we didn’t give up so much to get him. We would have been left with BD/Jack/Garnet and nothing left in the cupboard. Pau Gasol? Seriously? He did try to get him. And what would that have really done. Memphis wanted cap space, picks, and young talent. We couldn’t give that. We didn’t have a good expiring (unless you count Baron, Monta, or Dris), and trading away our young talent would kill the future without really improving the present (getting Gasol would maybe have led to a first round matchup with San Antonio, which we would have lost).
You make all these +/- assertions like they’re black and white. You don’t know what Mullin offered, you don’t know what players/teams wanted. You’re shooting in the dark. Just stop. Mullin made a lot of mistakes by overpaying players in the past (Dunleavy, Foyle, Murphy, RICHARDSON) but he hasn’t followed up with more mistakes recently. The bad contracts are almost off the books, we’ll see what happens then. I like the team as it is, I think he’s made some good signings in the last week (highly underrated by almost everybody here), and we’ll see what Monta, Beans, and BWright can do this year. Then we’ll watch Foyle come off the books and see where to go from there.
