Baron Davis = Stephon Marbury (Just Say NO to Stephon)

i've read a lot of posts from people who are interested in bringing stephon marbury in.  personally i think no since he hasn't been a good player for 3 years and is on the downside of his career.  his stats have declined significantly.  however, i recently read a poster compare his recent struggles to those of baron in new orleans and imply that if we could turn baron's career back around, we could do the same with marbury (see SONNYG).

i disagree completely.  when we picked up baron he was 26--still very young and theoretically approaching his prime.  though baron had a reputation for being a menace on the court, so to speak, with coaches, he never had any trouble off the court.  plus to my knowledge i never saw baron struggle on the court as much as marbury.  as much as i hate to speculate about effort, it is hard not to.

as i did more research on their careers, it seems that baron's career has mirrored marbury's more than marbury's would have the potential to mirror baron's.  although i would rather take a chance on a young PG instead of marbury (can you say shaun livingston?), i will admit that this doesn't say anything about marbury's future.  i just did some research and found this theory very interesting so i thought i would share it with all of GSOM in a fanpost.

now, marbury is 31 (baron is still younger at 29) in fact thinking marbury can mirror barons revival at this point is looking at the situation at the opposite angle.  baron's career seems to mirror marbury's more than marbury's will mirror baron's.  in fact, baron's career seems to be marbury's career happening in a 2-3 year delay.  lets take a look (keep in mind that baron is YOUNGER):

1. marbury had many disputes with coaches early in his career--so did baron

2. marbury had minor injury problems and struggled to play full seasons with minnesota & new jersey--baron had more serious injury problems in new orleans

3. marbury had his best scoring season in his last season in an injury shortened season in new jersey--baron had his best scoring season in his last season in an injury shortened season in new orleans

4. marbury was traded to phoenix and had arguably the most overall personal and arguably team success of his career playing with an exciting team including shawn marion and amare stoudemire. he led his team to an exciting playoff berth and had a VERY good playoff series in his second to last year with the team--baron was traded to GS and had the most overall personal and arguably team success of his career playing with an exciting team including stephen jackson and monta ellis.  he led his team to an exciting playoff berth and had VERY good playoff series in his second to last year with the team

5. suns struggle initially the following season and marbury goes home to the NY knicks (for essentially nothing in return to the suns) and has 2 very successful years, then 3 disastrous ones (both personally and team-wise for various reasons) --warriors fail to make the playoffs the following year and baron goes home to the LA clippers (for technically nothing in return to the warriors--cap space excluded).

if this logic continues, in his first 2 years in LA and lead the clippers to the playoffs next year and get swept in the first round.  baron will work even harder the following year to get them back again--but fail.  by year 3, he will feud with mike dunleavy in a very unsuccessful season and mike dunleavy will be fired.  elgin baylor isiah thomas will run the clippers into the ground and baron will lose concentration and suffer with declining personal statistics and play a very low number of games.  by year 5 baron will be labeled a former star, current team cancer with a huge contract and some posters on some blog somewhere will be advocating bringing a 34 year old baron davis to their team after a large buyout to backup and tutor their young combo guard into becoming a quality pg.

also ironically the nets became good after marbury left--picking up jason kidd.  phoenix reloaded, got nash and became really good after marbury left.  new orleans rebuilt and eventually got really good after baron left (cp3, chandler, west, peja).  the teams all did it in different ways: can the warriors continue this pattern?

basically, by my theory (of baron = marbury) it looks like the warriors were wise to not sign baron to a long term (more than 2 year) contract.  again this could just be coincidential correlation and is just a theory but i find it very interesting.

any thoughts?

my thoughts

your exactly correct

the good news is that theres no way we’re gonna sign marbury

fitz and brooks

i was listening to knbr the other day and someone mentioned marbury. rod and bob both hushed the guy acting like its a great idea and to keep it secret—or maybe they know of something in the works. that scared me quite a bit. we really DON’T need marbury on this team. maybe if we were championship caliber and ready to make a run next year (marbury to backup) but definitely not now. and maybe not even if that was the case…

fitz and brooks

i heard a caller ask about Stephon and Fitz and Brooks we’re heavily against this idea. I think you misremembered the content on KNBR that day. I agree w/ you – Stephon is not the answer here. He’s a cancer to every team he’s ever been on.

you're prolly right

i probably misinterpreted it. i couldn’t tell if they were trying to shut him up or keep the idea a secret

CANCER

Exactly. I don’t get the impression his teammates even like him. Not to mention coaches, obviously. Forget it. I’m a season ticket holder, and I’ll be PISSED if I’m forced to watch him play for us. There’s no upside or win to adding him, and worst case he INFECTS the attitude of the young guys on the team (can you say Monta) and leaves the franchise scarred for years.

No way. Go to Europe. Go anywhere. Preferably, go somewhere far from the NBA so none of us have to watch you.

Last comment: look, it’s obvious this guy is an ego-maniac and a jackass. Giving him ANOTHER chance because he has potential sends the wrong message to the players. This is a TEAM SPORT. There should be a NO JACKASS RULE.

NO STARBURY IN THE BAY!

I know we’re in need of a point guard but Coney Island’s finest (I’m not talkin about Jesus Shuttlesworth) is not what we need. He is the worst PG you can get for this system. He’s a ball hog who doesn’t make his team better. Plus he’s worth too much and no one in the NBA will pay him what he’s getting now. NO STARBURY!

if he can be had for cheap

we have a desperate need at the PG position, and Marbury could at least help cover a part of that role. Of course, I only advocate signing him to a lower risk contract, say 3 mil/year or somewhere on that order.

Small short term contract would be nice

But why would Marbury do that? He’d rather go to a contender or focus on making cool cheap basketball shoes for kids who can’t afford $250 sneakers (a very admirable goal IMHO).

stats

Marbury’s stats from his last year in Phoenix are almost identicle to Baron’s this year. Kinda scary

by krazybalr on Jul 11, 2008 11:55 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

starbury is crazy

http://youtube.com/watch?v=zWxgbyYrT5A

when he was coming up with his “dream” stats that he wanted to average. he only wanted 10 points, 12-13 assists, 2-3 dimes, 4-5 rebounds…wait
somebody has to tell this guy that he was high during this interview, dimes = assists

Thank you, Dubs.

It should only come down to money

Marbury isn’t worth it only because he’s too expensive in relation to his reputation, because when it comes down to it, a 20 point 8 assist ballhandler would simply be too hard to ignore if money weren’t an issue. I agree on the “no Marbury for us” part, but disagree on the reasons. A big change of scenery/atmosphere could get anyone going good again, including him; it’s the salary, however, that’s making him not worth going after, and it’s unlikely he’d take a significant paycut on a very short contract just to help keep our fledging team competitive in the stronger conference.

I hope the Davis/Marbury parallels do remain true for us, though. But who’s out there that can possibly be the next Steve Nash?

Dear Mr. gogoldenbears

If we don’t sign another guard, who is going to start at guard for us besides Monta Ellis? CJ Watson? Kelenna Azubuike? Marco Belinelli? Corey Magette?(okay, I highly doubt that) Anyways, anybody got their idea? I don’t.

Oh and please, no Starbury please.
