Celtics sign Patrick O'Bryant
Don't know if it's been mentioned anywhere on GSoM yet, anyway, good for him.
The Celtics have signed Warriors free agent center Patrick O'Bryant to a two-year deal, according to NBA sources. The 7-foot-0, 260-pounder was the ninth overall pick out of Bradley in the 2006 NBA Draft by Golden State, but played sparingly in two seasons. The Celtics worked out O'Bryant, who is expected to back up center Kendrick Perkins, a week ago at their training facilty in Waltham.

didn't know
wow interesting didn’t know. thanks for the info. i dunno how other people here feel, but i think he has the talent to be a solid if unspectacular nba starting center. based on talent, he should be able to eventually start over perkins IMO. question as many people have said before is his desire. he just didn’t fit here especially with nellie running the team.
good luck to him. we wont miss him haha. any idea on what the contract was—would be interesting to know for reference.

Wouldn't it be ironic...
...if he got his first ring before Mullin?
Not that I sign him, though. He just oozes LAZY.

The talent wasn't the question.
It was his desire and work ethic.

What a stupid post!
The celtics know talent? Hell they sucked for 10 years dude! I even knew getting Allen and Garnett would help that team. They know talent? Put Garnett and Allen on the Warriors last year and we would have won it all. I guess you would have said, The Warriors know talent! Your posting license has been revoked!

I hope he does turn out to be a good player...
that will show our front office wasn’t as incompetant as we thought they were, with this pick. Who knows…maybe if given the playing time he could have flourished on our team as well. Its kinda embarassing the organization was so high on this kid for years yet they never gave him a chance to play. If nothing else, it will be an interesting thing to look at next year, and a reason to keep our eyes on Boston. I will be watching for sure because, I remember we coulda picked a guy that turned into a stud, but we didn’t. I don’t remember who though, anyone know?

POB went #9; Millsap went #43
Which just goes to show that a lot of folks missed him. Otherwise, the only real impact players after POB thus far are Daniel Gibson (#42), Jordan Farmar (#26), Rajon Rondo (#21), Ronnie Brewer (#14), and of course Leon Powe (#49)... So its not like there were any obvious picks that we blew. Sadly, Rudy Gay went #8, just above POB. He’s legit.

The problem I had with the pick was that it was obvious that they were picking for position rather than picking a player. Brewer’s name was mentioned. He wouldn’t have been a stretch. There were point guards available who projected as backups (add Marcus Williams to the list). Would Farmar or Wiliams or Rondo have been a “stretch”? Perhaps. But part of the reason that they would have been a stretch is that the mock drafters and projectors and player rankers consistently move big men projects up in the draft with the widespread associated need for big men. That they wind up being busts year after year while there’s a higher success rate with guards picked later suggests that the “stretch” picks shouldn’t be stretches. To some degree the lack of success of Mid 1st Bigs and at least equal if not higher degree of success of later 1st round guards is predictable. At some point that everyone makes the same mistake shouldn’t be taken as some sort of justification.
He was a poor pick who was subsequently managed poorly. I suspect what we’ve heard about his “work ethic” is a mixture or reality and total BS. But in his limited time this year he was definitely improved from the wreck that first arrived here. Total catastrophy of a pick, made only slightly more palatable because picks at #9 rarely turn into stars.

Patty boy o'bryant? On the Celts?
With that name, he was destined to be on the celtics. seriously though, if playing with that squad doesn’t light a fire under his derrier, nothin will.

POB
He’ll do great with the celtics because they will give him more playing time than nelson did.
It’s sad to see players leave when we never gave them a chance. As it always happens players who leave the warriors become great even all stars. It seems like at times the warriors know how develop or make them better for team other than the warriors…

I don’t know if he’ll do great, but he can’t do less than he did here.

he don't suck
i’ve seen pob play a few times and he’s actually skilled. remember, the nba is compiled of all the best players in the country. sometimes all they need is playing time. look at arenas, he was at the end of the bench during the first half of his rookie season. i dont remember who the starting point was back then but when he got hurt, arenas just blew up. give pob 15 consistent mins per game and he’ll be alright
