Pree's Summer League Content - Azubuike Leaving?
UPDATE (7/14, 5:25 PM)
Had a chance to talk to Kelenna Azubuike .. he said a bunch of teams are interested in him and he's looking around. It sounded to me like he was going to leave.
http://www.hoopsworld.com/Story.asp?story_id=9473
I've done a lot of non-Warriors stuff in the past few days, so if you're interested, head over to my archive .. http://www.hoopsworld.com/AuthorArchives.asp?AUTHOR_ID=25
Just some general thoughts so far ..
- seeing Randolph go down was really scary - I immediately looked up at Nellie to see his reaction, but he was cool as a cucumber. Wowzers.
- Brandan Wright is trying to send a statement - he wants minutes next season. The dude is all over the place and I think he looks pretty solid so far. He isn't ready to start or be depended for more than like 12-15 minutes a game, but I think he can be an energy guy and be productive. Working on getting an extended interview with him over the next few days.
- Marco looked better in game 2, but his defense doesn't look like it has gotten much better. Nice seeing him run some point, although I don't think that would happen in an actual NBA game.
- Louis Amundson loves to rebound.. I think he has a shot, and so does DeMarcus Nelson if he stays aggressive the way he has.
- JJ Hickson was a BEAST today .. I joked with him that he's not a very good jumpshooter, which is why he sticks in the post so much and his response was that he'll show me how wrong I am later this week.
- Really like what I saw from Bobby Brown of the Hornets ..
- Darrell Arthur and Mike Conley have clearly played together in the past .. they looked like they had nice chemistry, for sure
Randolph Steals the Show
Spent some time talking to Anthony Randolph, Brandan Wright, and Marco after the game. Marco talks about how he played a little bit of point guard, but it doesn't mean much and Wright talks about how he plans to get PT this season. Randolph discussed his debut.
Video: Day One Recap
Me and Bill Ingram break down the first day of Summer League action.
Randolph Injures Right Ankle, but Will Be OK
Don't worry, although it looked like Randolph really hurt himself, he seems like he's going to be okay. He was walking around okay after hurting his right ankle and came back to the game a bit later after getting some treatment from the trainer. Phew.
Warriors Find Their PG?
We all know that the Warriors desperately need a backup PG, but CJ Watson is playing like he's ready to step up to that role. Find out what CJ has done to improve his game, what Nellie wants him to do, and what Coach Smart sees.
This FanPost is a submission from a member of the mighty Golden State of Mind community. While we're all here to throw up that W, these words do not necessarily reflect the views of the GSoM Crew. Still, chances are the preceding post is Unstoppable Baby!

thanks – that was some good read. the webcast was really bad, so how did Marco’s defense look like? Was his lateral movement better than before?

It was okay ..
He said he’s been working out the past two weeks in SF and his conditioning and body are better than they were during the season. Lots of work left, though.

thanks, but if it is true, what Nelson claims (that the team didn’t run a play for AR in the first half), than he can really be really good – as some have mentioned before – Durant type of player.

A big Tracy McGrady...
is who Anthony Randolph reminds me of. He’s got that really smooth handle that puts defenders to bed, and he’s so agile in his movement and with his ability to pull up off the dribble. I like that he took 18 shots too, I wasn’t expecting him to come out as aggressively and confidently as he did. Did anybody see that shot he made in the 3rd quarter from the top? He gets alot of lift on his jumper. Looks like a top 5 pick so far…

Scary part ..
The team didn’t call a play for him in the first half – everything he did was basically on his own improvisation with the situation.

Maybe A.R. can be the Dubs...
....Starting Point Guard.
!!!
What if he is a freak and a gem of a brokeman’s Magic Johnson waitin to break out? He weighs as much as Shaun Livingston and is only 3 inches taller. I’d like to see that starting backcourt of Randolph and Monta.
Yo pree…can you ask Keith Smart if he would try starting A.R. at the one for a couple of games in the summer league and see what happens?
I know it sounds crazy but I’m sure its something Nellie would pull.
cheggit. Starting Five:
PG – Anthony Randolph 6’10
SG – Monta Ellis 6’ 3
SF – Stephen Jackson 6’ 8
PF – Corey Maggette 6’6
C – Andris Biedrins 6’11
Looks like a Nellie lineup. Right?

Just to temper expectations, Belinelli had a huge first game in the summer league. He rode that to great expectations until the season started and it was clear that he wasn’t ready for prime time.
by jae on Jul 11, 2008 9:54 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
Haha, true
I’ll take it for what it is and just be happy that one of the young guys is playing well at the moment. Let’s see how he follows that performance up. I keep telling myself that he won’t play much at all this year just because he really doesn’t look physically ready, so any contribution is going to be great in my eyes. I must admit I am surprised at how fluid he looked out there.

I don’t think this game is proof that Randolph will be a star. I don’t even think it’s proof that he’ll be an effective role player in the NBA… the summer league just doesn’t allow for that kind of projection.
Still, I think there’s more to be excited about in this performance than there was in Belinelli’s. Specifically:
1) While Marco wasn’t exactly a “polished” prospect, he was considered to be farther up the learning curve than Randolph, being two years older and having logged lots of international experience already. A 19-year-old Randolph being the best player on the floor in a summer league game is slightly more unexpected, in a good way, than a 21-year-old Belinelli being the best player on the floor in a summer league game.
2) I didn’t see much of today’s game, thanks to the well-documented streaming glitches, but it seemed like Randolph was matched up against Thaddeus Young the majority of the time. Young is a ginyoowine NBA small forward, a probable starter for a probable playoff team—it means more to succeed against him than it does in most summer league situations. I only watched the second half of Belinelli’s breakout game last year, but I don’t recall him being matched up against players of Young’s caliber (Julian Wright covered him occasionally, I guess; it was pretty much scrubs other than that).
3) Marco’s big game basically involved a shitload of jumpshooting. He had a nice pass or two, had an entertaining steal, but it was basically about the guy draining a million shots. A guy who does that in a summer league game hasn’t proved anything; he’s basically just proved that he’s capable of having a game where he’s really on. And indeed, Belinelli was never “on” enough during the regular season to justify big minutes, primarily because of his defense.
In contrast, Randolph, by all accounts, showed a number of things tonight. He showed a nice midrange jumper and an ability to pull up for a jumper, but ALSO a nice handle, some slashing ability, some rebounding acumen and some defensive chops. People are praising all kinds of stuff about his performance… moreso than Belinelli’s last year.
I don’t think Randolph will be a big contributor for us this year. I don’t know if he’ll ever be… a lot of smart people think he has “bust” written all over him, and one good game won’t, and shouldn’t, erase that possibility. Summer league really isn’t indicative of much. But there’s a lot to like about what he did tonight. It’s a more heartening performance than Marco’s was.

Good analysis.
Everything you say is valid. Still, FWIW my instinct tells me he’s legit. I know folks are saying “Lamar Odom”, but I sorta get a Rudy Gay vibe from him right now. The slashing and shot creation part is what I really like. MB has one of the fastest shots in the league, so it’s no wonder that he can rack up points real fast when he’s hot. I can also see him having nights where he’s 3/20 because the jumpshot is basically all he has… AR looks like he’s more rounded, which is your point I believe. I concur.
Not that my instincts are worth a crap. But then again, based on the success rate of most NBA teams in drafting I’d say they’re no worse than anyone else’s…
by b.radley on Jul 12, 2008 1:05 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
What's that odorrrr...
I smell a freak fellas. Comments about AR’s skill and size don’t look so presumptive when watching the fluid coordination of a rare athlete at 6’10”. I was impressed with his instincts today (esp: defensive second half). So interesting to see the difference in game between BW and AR. I liked BWright’s approach to the game playing the role of glue guy. But AR seems more than appropriate to his posited posiiton (SF). AR can really handle, is built to slip and slash, and (most importantly) seems to have quick feet to defend and attack mismatches.
I must admit, given Nellie’s style of ball, I am giddy every time management adds another skilled swingman. One more would make me happy. Livingston? I said it at the trade deadline and I feel it bears saying again: “The team lives and dies with our swingmen”
by Hoof on Jul 12, 2008 4:07 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
In theory I agree with Jae...
But the intrigue from a fan’s perspective on a 6-10/6-11, 19 yr. old ball player who can score either inside or out, who instigates the defense by attacking the rim with conviction, while at the same time, having the complete potential to dictate a ball game defensively with his rebounding and shot blocking. I am much more intrigued by this, than Marco’s shooting display a year ago. I think it was understood by the coaches and the fans that Marco was a streaky shooter from long range. That was evident throughout summer league, to go along with this 37 point outing.
So in that sense, I’m not sure it’s fair to compare Belinelli’s and Randolph’s performances. But I also would not say Randolph should immediately explode into the rotation and have the impact that so many believed Belinelli would. Rather, the fans who watched the game are excited to see a player as rare, as talented and young, as an Anthony Randolph. The length, the foot-speed, and the timing to block shots along with his rebounding make him an exciting defensive talent alone. I can not think of many players from the present or past who stand 6’10 – 7’ who handle the ball quite as smoothly, and who move quite as quickly as Randolph does. With constant work on his mid-range game, and as his handle steadily improves, I think it’s fair to believe that offensively, Randolph has the chance to become an unstoppable player in the NBA some day, and he’s got a chance to be a pretty damn good defender as well. The Warriors are lucky to have such a rare breed of athlete fall into their laps at 14. We will see how he does against the pro’s, hopefully by mid-season this year. Really just got to wait n see…but go head and get excited.

No such thing. If there was there’d be no reason to play the games cause unstoppable guys team would always win. Randolph might look good in practice but remember 29 other teams checked him out and din’t pick him before us. About 3 years from now will be the time to be happy or mad.

Summer League: Salt Lake City
New member here… I am unfortunately stuck in Salt Lake City. Moved here from Hayward about 6 years ago. Been to every Warrior game at the Energy Solutions Arena since, I’m sure I don’t have to explain the horrors of a Jazz vs. Warrior game when you are there are 2 Warrior fans in the whole Arena (Literally). Anyways, the Warrior summer squad will be here from July 22 to the 25th I believe. Pree, do you need credentials in order to watch the games? I live a block away from the college they will be playing at, and I would love to see the rookies in live action. Is there a way fans could watch the game? And if so, do you know the process of how to obtain entrance? Thanks…

I'm not familiar with the Salt Lake Revue
Can you shoot me an email to check up on how you can get into the building? pbhattacharya@hoopsworld.com
In any case, if it is open to the public (as Vegas is, Orlando is not), you can just buy a ticket to watch the game. Credentials get you access to the players, but unless you are working for what the NBA deems a “news organization”, you won’t get a credential.

I know that
it’s all business there in Vegas for the players, but any of them going out to gamble? I bet BWright and Watson go to the bunny ranch tomorrow after practice.
Nah but I love that in the first game AR went 12-18fg. That’s not counting his 8 boards and 2 steals. Pretty much the best performance so far in the league. Makes a fan feel good about the draft. Now if we can see Hendrix. When is he supposed to play? I read that he will make an appearance there but when was the question.
Here’s a question for AR. Belinelli played exceptionally well last year in the SL, yet still held the bench through most of the season. With the addition of Maggette, does AR feel like he has to show his talent to earn his spot at the 3? Is that why he was making plays for himself?
And for you Pree: How do you think SL play translates to the NBA season? And why are you up at 12:30am?
Keep Monta Movement.

I don't get much sleep :(
Haha, the world of writing keeps me up .. I took a nap for a few hours and just got up!
I think SL has a lot of value because the competition is a nice transition for college players – the speed isn’t quite of am NBA, but it’s close. I think for a guy like Randolph, who just showed that he’s pretty much a scorer at will, it won’t translate as well, but his skills are there. The same shake off and pull-up will be there in the actual NBA, but the defenders will be longer and more able to annoy him. How he adjusts to that will be interesting to watch – Marco was not able to pull that off.
I’ll have another story up about what all this means .. spoke to Coach Smart for a while, so I’ll get that up as soon as I can. I’m going to spend the morning with some NBA players as they work out, hoping to speak to some about the exact topic you brought up.

By the way
Nelly doesn’t usually tell the truth about his plans but do you really think that he will play Randolph at the 3? If they resign Buike they have Jackson, Belinelli, Buike, Maggette and Randolph all available for the 3 position, and we know Nelly likes to go small. And that’s not counting any other aquisitions, (Barnes for the minimum? What you think?). Having an amazingly tall 3 could help the defensive weakness that Monta creates. What position do you think he will play? Could he be that guy Nelly wanted Dunleavy to be? The proposed power point forward?
We are the future of basketball. Dub Love.
by danielholl on Jul 12, 2008 1:15 AM PDT reply actions 0 recs
Nellie's not fixated on going small...
...he’s fixated on mismatches. AR will fit in great for that reason. Would create all kinds of chaos for the other team when you’re switching between a 6’6” Azubuike and a 6’10” AR. Same position, very different type of player. Heck, if the W’s got a true PG I wouldnt be surprised to see AR slide to the 2, if he keeps developing that handle. And don’t be surprised if we see Nellie match him up against Durant at the 2 during the season… That might be fun to watch…

A question for Pree or whoever...
About Andris Biedrins, do you think there’s a good possibility of him being moved some time within the next year, if not this off-season? I just hear Mullin and Nellie saying how much they’re sprung off the whole Wright/Randolph tandem and this n that… Well if they plan to put AR at the 4 some day, and Wright, I’m guessing would then slide over to the 5 right? So where does that leave Andris? I mean he could obviously just as well stay on the team, and there’s our 3 big man rotation. Ideally, I would like to see that happen, but do you think the organization believes enough in Wright and Randolph at this point to go ahead and trade Andris and Harrington for another premier guy? Not that Biedrins is being pushed out of the picture by any means… But it sounds like the staff really has high hopes for the rookie, and I just want to know where you or anyone else thinks that leaves Andris. I hope he remains a Warrior.

Played at the 3 very early in his career because of a similiar circumstance being his weight/strength. I think eventually Randolph will move to power forward and play out his career there. I really don’t see a problem with Andris staying on the team and accumulating the same amount of minutes between those three guys.. But I mainly wanted to see if there was any inside info or speculation on any direction the chise might take specifically regarding AB.

that Andris would be gone. Mullin stated that Monta and Andris are going to be Captians for the upcoming season. I hardly see him commanding much money anyways (8-9mil per) because he is often compared as the “anderson varejao role type player.” Monta on the other hand, would want 11-12 per season which i think is a bit much but really have no choice but to do so. Unless (1) Nellie decides Belinelli or Randolph is still not NBA ready, or (2) Mullin’s able to dump TMNT for a draft pick (to the Clips?) or a PG who’s better than Quiet Storm, Kelenna may find himself the odd wingman out. Personally, I’d be glad to give him Marco’s PT, but I don’t think Mulson are ready to admit that the 2007 draft was a failure.

Kelenna got more minutes (21:23) last season than Barnes (18:30) and more minutes than Watson (11:20) and Belinelli (7:17) combined.
With Baron, Pietrus and Barnes (most likely) gone and the remaining uncertainty of Marco’s game, Kelenna would be a nice backup for Maggette and Jackson.
Then again, like with Pietrus, Kelenna might be aiming to jump into a starting lineup, or at least move above where he’d fall on this team’s depth chart.
Kepping Azubuike around would mean dividing up Randolph’s and Belinelli’s minutes, assuming they get much.
It’s a really tough call.

very true
although i do think buike will be unhappy with negotiations toward the front office(like so many other players we love), if one of our guards get hurt (knock on wood) we will seriously be lacking depth. buike gives us versatility between the 2 and the 3 and im sure anywhere else he would be a starter or a coveted 6th man anywhere else. rookies in our 2nd team i really dont feel confortable with it, and would rather have a proven player then a questionable player such as bellinelli who still have trouble in the nba or randolph who i still think is really raw but overall talented and the one with the most potential in this team. warriors should be smart and resign him using part of our mle. When he got the minutes, he scored 20 points plus.

I’d be extremely happy for Kelenna. He definitely deserves more minutes, and a heftier contract so I’m all for him exploring what is out there. He’s going to be one of those players that come back to Oracle to kick the Warriors butts.

In Japanese “bukkake” isn’t even a dirty word. I mean, it can be, depending on context, but like “prick” or “come” or “cougar” or “rusty trombone” it has a proper meaning as well. At my local soba restaurant, I often ordered bukkake soba (all together now: “ewwwwww”). From wikipedia:
The word bukkake is often used in Japanese to describe pouring out water with sufficient momentum to cause splashing or spilling. Indeed, bukkake is used in Japan to describe a type of dish where the toppings are poured on top of noodles, as in bukkake-udon and bukkake-soba.
But of course, like so many things Japanese, Americans remember the pervy part and ignore the boring, real life stuff.
In English, yeah, “bukkake” is about as filthy as it gets. But since the Skeptic is in good with the GSoM Powers That Be these days, he can say whatever the fvck he likes with impunity…

The general message I get from the usage here is that the poster is either a) 11 years old and still thinks it’s clever or b) acts like an 11 year old who still thinks it’s clever. Whichever it is, at least in my opinion it impressed on the rest of the post a negative shadow that doesn’t really lend to any serious discussion nor make the poster look particularly bright or insightful.

The assumption that Randolph will be on the second team is probably premature as is Belinelli getting playing time. Also, the assumption that Nellie (or any coach for that matter) breaks down a first and second team by postion like that is usually not true. Jackson, Maggette, and Azubuike all play a 2-3. In many lineups, I can see them on the floor at the same time with one nominally as the PF.
Nelson hasn’t shown that he’ll give out PT just because of draft position. I know he said that he’d do more to bring on the young guys, but I’ll believe it when it happens for more than a fleeting couple of games.
I also don’t see why investing time in Belinelli, who is young and sucks, is somehow more of a youth movement than investing time in Azubuike, who is young and didn’t suck.

I’m still excited by Buike’s upside. He showed the ability to play better defense as the season went on and is already a pretty reliable outside shooter compared to our other options. I still really hope to see him back.
Randolph has played well but I’m still not convinced we will see him play consistently during the regular season. I think that Buike has earned the position of first wing off the bench. He could still improve and become a starter in this league eventually. I think that with all the changes this offseason it would be nice to keep one of our most consistent bench players around.
That second unit that Sleepy posted still seems too thin to me. We need at least one more reliable guy on that list. I’ll take Buike. And hey, while I’m at it lets throw in a better back-up point… and Dwight Howard.

speaking of premature...
isn’t it premature, at least, to say Belinelli sucks?
He didn’t play very much last year, and when he did, he played both poorly, and well (the former particularly in the earlier part of the season, and the latter in the latter part). You may not care for his game, but at this point sucks seems little more than hyperbole.
by haverecords on Jul 15, 2008 3:48 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
It’s possible that he’ll turn things around, but based on what he did in limited time and the fact that Nelson, after first raving about him, never saw fit to get him more than that limited time, I don’t think ‘sucks’ is hyperbole. The problem with Belinelli is that his strength was supposed to be his shooting. We got very excited by one (1) summer league game, ignored most of the rest of the summer league and pronounced him a star early on. I don’t recall him playing particularly well in any part of the regular season. Overall his play wasn’t particularly good.
The reality is that very few “pure shooters” who do little else help their team that much to begin with. They may get more attention than other specialists because scoring stats get recorded and scoring is conspicuous, but in terms of adding to win totals, dreadfully few designated guns make a positive difference to win totals. And that’s mostly what he’s been. I don’t know exactly how to translate Euro league stats. It seems they’re stingier with assists. But a shot is a shot and a rebound is a rebound and in his Euro league, he was an abysmal rebounder and didn’t shoot as well as the designated gun has to shoot to be an asset if he doesn’t do something else at least marginally above average.
by jae on Jul 15, 2008 10:25 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I wouldn’t say we ignored the rest of the summer league, as he did well overall, but yes people got excited by that game. Your ‘and’ point is underdetermined: Beli’s may still well be a very good shooter (he has shown himself to be just that at times)-this year will probably be the year where we can say either which way. Also, early on last season Nelson himself said that Belinelli’s problem was defensive, rather than offensive: he played euro style defense, and was mistake prone while playing defense (and defensive errors-blown assignments, silly risks—will get Nelson to use the hook faster than anything else). Hopefully Belinelli has addressed this, but we don’t know. He struggled early in the season on offense as well, and thus found himself hanging with POB. He had at least 2, but maybe 3 games in the later third of the season, where he got into the teens in points, and these games were also the games where he got a chance to play (i. e. real minutes). On the basis of these games, and summer league play, if safe to say he’s got something, but it is not clear whether he’s got enough to stick: this year should answer that.
I have yet to be impressed by the predictive or demonstrative ability of hybrid basketball stats (PER, for example), and attempted league stat transfers. I think they are interesting, and would like to see such things refined more, but I think they need work before they can be as solid as some in baseball, for example. I say this because I think we differ philosophically here, as you take stats as more ‘finally’ indicative than I do; I think they are helpful tools, but I’ve got to watch the player play, and assess on the basis of what he can do, and might be able to do via projection and extrapolation. Perhaps we could address this difference, but I’m not sure it would be worthwhile here.
As for other assets: He does seem a week rebounder, but that isn’t lethal for a guard. He can pass, though, so that is an asset. As for the FG%, we’ll see this year.

What I've seen so far with Beli
1. He’s a “pure shooter”, perhaps, but with extremely suspect shot selection which is ultimately a handicap to his team—even on the Warriors.
2. He’s a sloppy playmaker. He has decent court vision, but he tries to do things too fancy too often. In the end, he ends up looking like a mediocre streetball player who throws a lot of suspect passes and gets lucky every once in a while. Occasionally he surprises me, which gives hope, but he makes a lot of bad decisions too.
3. He has poor lateral quickness. Offensive players go right around him, time after time, and he seems content to flail with a reach rather than working hard to cut them off. So either he’s too slow or just lazy with his defense. This is the real killer that will keep him out of games during the regular season.
This is not me being a hater; I want the guy to be good, because lord knows we need some guys coming off the bench. But the more I see him play in Summer League (watched the first games on the internet/TV and am in LV now—saw today in person) the more those impressions become more concrete.
If he puts a “quality” filter on top of his shot selection and his playmaking - namely if he reins it in a plays more “within himself” rather than trying to be flashy - he has the potential to be a decent contributor. My gut is that his upside is probably something like a poor man’s Peja Stojakovic, with less size and slightly better playmaking. But the more I see him the more I fear that his game may ultimately be better built for Europe than the US…
I hope he proves me wrong.

Way to go Warriors
we traded Azubuike and a potential top point guard (draft pick) for 29 year old Corey Maggette.
In 5 years Maggette will be 34, in his twilight and useless for 10 mil a year. Kelenna will be 29, in his prime and very useful for probably less than 10 mil (unless he renegotiates, which could only be good news for it would mean he deserved star money). Was Maggette really worth it just to offer the quick solution to Davis leaving?
Luckily he’s restricted, so if Mullin really wants to he can keep him, but it would only be delaying the inevitable.
by belilaugh on Jul 14, 2008 7:25 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
What the hell are you talking about.
Azubuike hasn’t gone anywhere and Randolph has a ton of potential. Corey is now entering his prime at 28 and we still have cap space to sign a veteran PG. Don’t jump the gun man.
by joestar on Jul 14, 2008 9:35 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
First off, let me just say that whatever happens short of letting Monta Ellis leave (because that might be too much), I’ll support the Warriors. They could still sign him but it’s more likely with the Maggette signing that they don’t. The Warriors are a few years away from being a possible contender. With the Maggette signing there is not much room for Buike, he knows it and the Warriors do. By the time they are there Maggette will be in his twilight, while if we kept Azubuike he would have been entering his prime. In addition to that, by not signing Maggette and keeping Azubuike we can see what kind of player we have in him if we give him minutes, and so far he has produced when he’s been given minutes. In addition to that, by playing Azubuike and not Maggette we probably will lose a lot of games next year, which would put us in line for a pretty high draft pick in a year when there are a couple really good looking point guards (Rubio would be a dream, and Holliday). So while there are no sure things, we could potential have our franchise PG. In addition to that, when 2010 rolls around, we don’t have Maggette’s contract on the books, which allows us to make a more serious run at an elite player.
And it’s not that I don’t like Maggette’s game, I do, and I realize he will offset some of the negatives that Baron leaving created. But I do not want to be playing for the 8th seed every year, I want to play for a championship.
by belilaugh on Jul 14, 2008 11:46 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Good points...
But you have a lot of assumptions that are based on hope. Azubuike is restricted and realistically not many teams will give him a large chunk of change. The Maggette signing doesn’t effect them retaining Ellis at all because he’s restricted, and the teams with cash are looking at big men and prototype swingmen. Besides just because you get a high draft pick means you get an impact PG. With the Warriors recent history it might be better to just take a combo guard in the second round and convert them to PG ala Arenas, and now Ellis.
Seriously, the roadmap to success to not to intentionally suck for a couple of years and hope you acquire talent. There is too much luck involved in that, and I’d rather do what the W’s are doing right now and try to add talent whenever they can. Seriously, why not use the cap space they have now for talent, when they’ll lose it anyway after Ellis and Beans are signed.
Ellis, Beans, Maggette, and Turiaf > Ellis, Beans.
by joestar on Jul 15, 2008 12:01 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
agree
ESPECIALLY because this team, without Maggette, still wouldn’t have been nearly bad enough to land a top-three pick.
Let’s say we didn’t sign Maggette and we just play this season shorthanded, to save cap space and to land a good pick. How would we fare? I have trouble seeing that team finishing worse than, say, 28-54. You’ve got an elite scorer in Monta, a solid center in Biedrins, and a bunch of versatile scorers… you’re gonna win a third of your games. If you’re 28-54, you’re a bad team. But you’re also going to get the eighth or ninth pick in the draft, and there’s just not consistently good value there the way there used to be.
And a PG-rich draft, if anything, makes the situation worse. Let’s say we pick at eight, and get the fourth PG taken. Now we’ve put our team in the hands of a point guard who’s not only undoubtedly worse than CP3, Deron, Nash, Parker, and a host of others… he’s also worse than three guys taken ahead of him. If we picked at eight next year, we’d get, at best, an average NBA point guard. How does that propel us towards a championship?
There are better places to be than the no-man’s-land of the eighth seed in the playoffs. But there are worse places, too - like the no-man’s-land of the eighth pick in the draft. We should know - we were stuck there for a couple years, and it friggin’ SUUUUUCKED. I’ll take a 43-39 team over that every time.
by onlxn on Jul 15, 2008 1:51 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I don’t know about that. Without our number one option Davis, as far as scoring goes, our number one option is Ellis (who may become a number one, but I don’t know, I’d say two), Jackson (who is a number three option at best), and Harrington (who may have been traded anyway but he’s like a fourth option). Not only that, Baron played almost all the minutes at PG last year. Without him we are pretty empty at the position. I mean, we could slide Ellis over but then who gets the two, Belinelli? And we could slide Jackson over but then who mans the three, Randolph? And if Harrington gets traded then our third option is Biedrins, who at this point is a fifth option.
A good team needs three legit scoring options (Boston), a superstar with a supporting cast (Cleveland/Orlando), or a hell of a lot of balance and depth (Detroit). I see nothing on that new team.
I see no way in hell that team reaches 43 (43?!) wins.
by belilaugh on Jul 15, 2008 12:28 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I agree, that team doesn’t - that team would lose 50 games. My point is that there wouldn’t be that much upside to losing 50 games - to get a really meaningful draft pick, you have to lose about 60, and I don’t think we would.
With Maggette, I think we’re roughly a 43-39 team. And what I’m saying is, better to idle at 43-39 than at 32-50.
by onlxn on Jul 15, 2008 1:11 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
No, I know Ellis will likely sign, I’m just stating an impossible scenario that would really piss me off.
And true, nothing is guaranteed, but that’s why you have to take risks. I’m thinking of the best case scenarios here, because most likely anything less and we aren’t winning a championship, but it’s the same for any team with a young core, like Portland. Randolph, Wright, Belinelli and our other young guys aren’t guaranteed to become anything, but I am hoping/assuming they will pan out in a couple of years. I figure that a top pick point guard is a good risk to add to that because it raises the ceiling even higher. Portland right now has added Bayless. There are no guarantees that Bayless, the 4th or 5th (forget) PG taken will pan out, or anyone on the Blazers short of Roy. Still, I’d take that chance. If their core all breaks out at the same time like some are saying, the sky is the limit for them. That’s the blueprint I keep thinking of. It’s kind of how Billy Beane continually stocks up young talent until he has enough to go on a long run. Then, when that run is coming to an end, he takes preemptive action to make sure that his farm system is stocked like he’s done this year, and right now the A’s are loaded for next year.
That’s just my philosophy in every sport. I would rather be the A’s than the Giants, who had their brief moments in the early 2000s, but then tried to desperately hold on to their former greatness by signing old free agents like Steve Finley instead of replenishing through the draft. It’s funny though, now that they are, they suddenly have some guys to build around like Lincecum, Cain, and Sanchez.
Turiaf signing would be great though (hasn’t happened yet).

Not as many as Theo Epstein
Then again, Epstein has basically followed the Beane philosophy to a T: (1) develop cheap young talent (Harden, Street, Papelbon, Lester, Pedroia, etc.); (2) cast off overvalued vets, no matter how beloved they are (Huddy, Zito, Tejada, Pedro, Lowe, Damon, Millar, etc.); and (3) use advanced statistical analysis to unearth undervalued gems (OBP machines like Hatteberg, Cust, Swisher, Youks, Ortiz, e.g.)
Of course Theo has the nice li’l advantage of working for a team with a payroll 3-4 times as high as the one Beane works for. The fact that Beane has been able to field a consistently competitive team with that kind of disadvantage is testament to his genius. Plus in MLB, all you can really hope for is to get in the playoffs. Beyond that it’s really a crapshoot, much more so than in the NBA.
No NBA GM has the luxury of being Theo Epstein, Omar Minaya or Brian Cashman. They all basically have to the combination of foresight, fiscal responsibility, statistical expertise, and scouting savvy that Billy Beane has. If you want to have your cake and eat it too, maybe you should consider becoming a Yankees or Red Sox fan?

I agree that it’s almost always a good plan to get ahold of young talent to be in a position for it to click. The problem comes in figuring out what the realistic chances are for the talent to ever mature into production, coupled with the reality that one dominant big man is often enough to launch a sub-mediocre team into contention. Stockpiling in the NBA can’t be what it is in MLB. The systems governing the sport and the nature of the game itself are just very very different.
[FWIW, the Giants didn’t sign Finley as a free agent. Damon Bruce says they did all the time, but he’s a blowhard moron who don’t appear to bother with basic facts. Finley was acquired in trade for Edgardo Alphonso, who was even more terrible and worthless at that point. Phonzi actually seemed like a good sign at the time. Not overly expensive for a better than average player who was entering his peak years. But then he just sucked and sucked and sucked.]
by jae on Jul 15, 2008 3:41 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Yes, as you noted, the lesson carryover is minimal here. Talent assessment, and development of young players differ considerably in each sport. Too different to compare but in the very general.
(Bruce is a moron. and as you correctly note, the Phonzi sign did seem good at the time, and he even hit for average his giants years (except for the last) but the power which was in NY just evaporated, and rather inexplicably. The sign seemed good also because it allowed for the sign of durham, and with the attempted upgrade at 3rd with Phonzi….but it certainly didn’t work out).

I’m hoping Mulson wants him as much as I do and is just playing smart GM. The Ws should match ANY offer. While I HOPE that Randolph can back up Maggette at 3, I have NO faith he can. Ditto for Marco at the 2.
In my book, Kelenna is more likely the first off the bench to cover either of those positions. He has a sweet shot, is a decent ball handler, has very good D, and will go to the hole and then bang for the put-back like NO other 2 or 3 on this team. I’d be more upset with his leaving (considering the value) than I was at Baron’s inevitable sayonara.
