Clippers interested in Randolph

The Clippers are reportedly interested in acquiring Zach Randolph (don't worry it's not Anthony) from the Knicks. Here's a link to the source

http://www.newsday.com/sports/basketball/knicks/ny-spknix0712,0,1813465.story

I don't know if the clippers realize that Zach Randolph is not even close to as good as Elton Brand is and he can't play defense at all. Even though they might be around the same size and they might have similar points per game and rebounding numbers, Randolph is horrible on defense and only averaged .2 blocks per game last year. Not to mention he is not athletic at all for 6'9". The guy maybe dunked 3 times at most last year.

Just take a look for yourself

Wrong blog dude

I know the Elton Brand sweepstakes has increased our interest in the Clippers, but the interest only extends as far as Elton Brand and Corey Maggette, no more.

hey I'm interested in anything NBA-related

It doesn’t make any sense to compare Randolph to Brand. Obviously Brand’s better but they don’t have the option of acquiring Brand. For all the flack that Randolph gets he is incredibly talented on the offensive end. Randolph would fit better with LA since the Clips have Kaman for the defensive end. Randolph didn’t work with the Knicks because his front-court partner was Eddy Curry, who is another big man that can’t block shots. (only Isaiah could pair together two big guys that can’t block shots)

It's almost like the Warriors have 6 guys out there... they always have a guy open! - Jon Barry commentating game 3 last year

Z.Randolph’s offensive talent doesn’t really impress me as anything bordering on “incredible.” A PF shooting 46% from the field is not particularly impressive. He’s an “eh” passer in the post, turns the ball over quite a bit which, and has in the past been acceptable in getting to the line (where he’s a pretty good shooter for a big). He’s a high volume shooter, but nothing at all special in terms of his efficiency. He’s a good rebounder (not part of his offense)

Perhaps there’s some alternative definition of ‘talent’ that doesn’t rely on a half decade of middle of the road performance, but based on what he’s done, I’m not sure that his talent is “incredible”.

well

he definitely has an array of post moves and good range on his jumper. there really aren’t a lot of nba players anymore with such a repetoire of back-to-the-basket offense. his efficiency could improve with a different mix of players around him or a new team.

I pray i never have to use a gun again...

...unless i'm at a strip club parking lot...

...and somebody tries to run me over with their car...

...But how often does that happen??

Good players seem to be efficient on bad teams. In actual analysis, teammates tend to have less influence on FG% than most people suspect. Randolph has been pretty consistent throughout his career. His supporting cast hasn’t been nearly as identical as his performance. He may have good post moves. He hasn’t shown he knows when to employ them and when to give up the ball. I’ll again put that as something far, far shy of “incredible.”

by jae on Jul 12, 2008 9:10 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

not incredible

yeah. he’s not incredible on offense and he’s no elton brand, but FG% aside, he has the type of offense that you can go to fairly regularly during a game. The efficiency stats may not back it up, but there are teams that i’ve seen him straight abuse on offense when he was a blazer. i never watched him play on the knicks really. too crappy a team to keep my attention.

+1

if youre talking pure post game he is easily top 5 in the NBA today. He doesnt offer much of anything else, but he wouldnt be the worst aquisition for the Clippers who are desperate to piece together a playoff team in their window with Baron now.

Another NBA rumor that doesnt concern the W's

Jazz send Boozer to Bobcats for Gerald Wallace and Sean May
-not a real bad trade for either side in my opinion

-Utah-looks like Boozer may leave for Miami or elsewhere anyway (He doesnt have a reputation for being real loyal) so this way Utah could receive pretty good value for him. They have a bit of a salary cap mess looming and I think its far more important for them to keep Deron Williams than Boozer. Sure its nice for the Utah fans and the media to be able to draw the Stockton-Malone comparisons over and over and over again, but theyd still have a very good team without Boozer. Wallace is injury prone, but he’d take less of a beating moving back to his natural position of SF. Kirilenko could move back to the 4 where he’s had much more success, if he returns to form that contract doesnt look so bad. Defensively you wouldnt be able to find a better pair of forwards and when Ronnie Brewer is in at the 2 their D would be great. Theyd also be quite a bit more athletic and able to run more which may appease DWill, though maybe not Sloan. May, also injury prone, would provide a more bruising alternative to the Koufos/Okur Center platoon. Milsap would also likely see an increase in playing time and theyd have a little more cap flexibility to retain him.

Charlotte-Wallace has been great but theyve had success without him and he’s been a little upset at having to log so many minutes at the 4. Theres been a lot of speculation that he and JRich may be too similar to have much success playing next to each other. Both guys theyd be sending away have missed a ton of time due to injury. With Okafor (another guy with injury concerns) possibly signing with the Clips Charlotte could be forced to let him go with no other real post threat, or overpay to keep him. Boozer would more than compensate for Okafor’s loss and JRich and Boozer could create an inside outside tandem that could lead them to the playoffs in the weak East if they get solid contributions from some other guys. It would open up playing time for guys like Carroll and Morrison (not sure if thats a good thing). Theyd have plenty of money to give Boozer a max offer when his current deal expires and if Ajinca, Augustin, and Weaver(can we please, please trade for this kid!) develop they could have a nice little team.

no way

the jazz would never have two legit athletes who can run starting at forward. the thought of a jerry sloan team that’s fun to watch makes my head hurt. that team would run the floor sometimes. this is no good. the jazz need to sit in half court sets and not do anything that is even remotely improvised, for mine and jerry’s sanity’s sake.

also, wallace, to an extent, duplicates kirilenko, so they’d blink first if that trade were proposed. that team could challenge for a title as constructed. i doubt they go through with such a huge shakeup.

uh

Did you miss the fact that the Jazz were 5th in the NBA in scoring? 106 points per game. With Williams they are able to push the ball with great success. I, for the record, find the Jazz extremely fun to watch. The screening, movement, cutting, and passing is the way basketball was meant to be played in my opinion. All 5 players on the floor are good passers and have good vision for their respective positions. They react very well to their defender when off the ball and Sloan puts wrinkles in the offense to cater around his players (Okur popping out for straight on 3’s, Korver with wing 3’s, even Deron is allowed to free lance to some extent)

As far as the trade goes… To me, the biggest problem the Jazz have is the lack of a post defender. Both Boozer and Okur, while awesome offensive options, leave much to be desired on the defensive end of the floor. Is putting AK 47 at the 4 and getting rid of Boozer the answer? If you are Sloan, you have to ask yourself if you think AK 47 can hang with Amare, Dirk, Pau, West, Duncan, Al Jefferson, and the like out West, and if that is worth the production Boozer gives you with the points and boards. Personally, I would go about trying to replace Okur with some post defense. How exactly to do that, I have admittedly not thought through.

I would not do this trade if I was the Jazz. Boozer is such a big part of what they do and to essentially replace him with with Crash Wallace (whom duplicates AK 47 to some extent) would be took big of a hit to their scoring offense. I am not sure AK 47 guarding those beast power forwards in the West is worth giving up Boozer, no matter what his future intentions may be.

It does leave them

seriously lacking an offenzive post presence. Though I think theyd have enough guys who can hit from outside-Korver, Okur, Williams, Koufos-and enough guys who love to attack the basket-Wallace, Brewer, Williams-that they could overcome that. Defensively AK47 is so good technique-wise that I wouldnt worry too much about him agains the bigger western PF’s.

scoring doesn't necessarily make a team fun to watch

maybe i was watching the wrong jazz games, but i rarely ever saw them get out and run. they are a good passing team that can score. but they play methodical basketball, i feel like i’m watching a training video when i watch them play. deron williams is fun to watch, but the rest, not so much. you like efficiency and success, i like soul and artistry. now, if i were a jazz fan (god forbid) or a coach, i’d love the team because they do their jobs and win games, but as a neutral observer i couldn’t be less interested in watching them.

funny how the main complaint about this fanpost was the lack of warriors relevance and we ended up discussing the aesthetic value of utah jazz basketball after i made a crack about them being boring.
