Monta Ellis - 08-09 starting pg
Monta is one of the most talented players in the NBA and honestly I don't think anyone can guard him 1on1. Monta can score on anyone and well Nelly knows that so of course he wants the ball mostly in Monta's hands. It's almost automatic for Monta to shoot that mid range jumper and he can blow right past anyone and fly to the rim. He is arguably the fastest / most explosive player in the NBA and that can cause some really nasty matchups. The Warriors are all about scoring and Monta brings that. So what if he doesn't have true pointguard skills? After the first month of the season he's going to draw so much attention that someone is always going to be wide open and anyone on our starting squad can finish. He's going to get so many assists by just driving the ball then dishing under the net. To all the people that keep saying Monta shouldn't play point, are you saying you know basketball more than Nellie and Mully? Obviously they are sold that he needs to play point so just sit back, relax, and enjoy the ride. It's Monta's team now so get use to it! I know most of you wanted the ball in Monta's hands towards the end of the season anyway... And plus... Baron really only shined in the open court. Once it became a halfcourt game he always jacked up stupid shots anyways and rarely passed the ball.

i agree
especially about baron’s stupid selection.
the one man fast break owns all that and more.
plus, jackson will probably help facilitate and run the offense when we really need to.
and i think we’ll b going small a lot, run a lot of teams out the arena with monta moving up to the 2 spot, y else would we need 3 pgs?
Thank you, Dubs.

You Make A Good Point
It’s just that Monta is also a dunker and I wanted to see some alley oops thrown his way. Ever since J-Rich left, not that money alley oops for us to enjoy. Now, there will be even less of what was already very little.

Of course...
Forgive me. Maggette will definitely complete some oops for us. That was a big oops on my part. :-)

Monta
I’m real excited to see what he’s gonna bring this year, but let’s not kid ourselves. In the halfcourt offense, Monta can do about 2 things: shoot the midrange J off a pick or use shear athleticism to drive past his defender and elevate to finish. If other team has a Josh Smith or Kirilenko to protect the rim, Monta usually can’t finish in the paint against those types of athletic shotblockers. When that happens and his J isn’t falling, he tends to disappear in the halfcourt offense.
Let’s not poo poo on Baron. He could get his shot anywhere on the floor against anyone; whether it be in the post, on the baseline, in the lane, or beyond the arc. You give him the ball and trust that he’ll make something happen. I hope Monta can be the same.

He Will
Although Monta is starting to get cocky, I can tell he wants to get better in all aspects of the game. He’ll work and work until he gets almost to perfection. I love his work ethic.

no
these people don’t know more about basketball than mully or nellie, but you also aren’t a better decision maker than Baron Davis.

Even accounting for the usual Mully/Nellie media smokescreens, I don’t get the sense that they’re convinced that Monta definitely will be a great point guard. It seems like the rhetoric is “he’s improved his decision-making some, and this is the only way he can truly be a great player, so it’s worth trying”. I happen to agree with both parts of the statement—I’m on board with the move, and I’m excited to see how Monta fares. But I think even Mully and Nellie see this as more of an experiment than a sure success.

i agree
exhibit A: two years ago when they stuck monta at pg when baron was injured. granted, he wasn’t quite the player he is now, but he did not thrive in that role at all. he is a bit older, wiser, bigger and better now, but i don’t think ANYONE is convinced that monta ellis is a PG waiting to happen. i mean, many would argue that if you have one of the best SGs in the league, why would you try to mess with that?
by Run Dubz on Jul 13, 2008 1:59 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
the decision to turn him into a pg is based solely on his size or lack of it. his skill set is at the 2. he is athletic enough to hold his own against most pg’s. he will have his troubles against the bigger stronger pg’s due to his lack of strentgh . this situation is similar to what philly and nugs went through with ai. i say its easier to move monta to pg than it would be to find another bd type pg to protect him. some our worried that he is a defensive liability but who can gaurd the one man fast break. he will either hit the j in your face or blow by you.

my concern
Nellie’s style of play will be able to mask some of the deficiencies Monta may have as a PG when we’re on offense. But our defense is the reason we didn’t make the playoffs last year and Monta’s one of the biggest culprits. He is a poor defender plain and simple. I cringe at the thought of watching the Warriors play man to man and seeing Monta trying to stop Nash, Chris Paul, Deron Williams, Tony Parker, and now BD. It won’t be pretty.
by Money Ball on Jul 13, 2008 2:19 AM PDT reply actions 0 recs
A major aspect of the game Monta needs to improve in is running the fast break as a passer. Also, right now, Maggette is really the only guy on the team who can create his own shot as the shot clock winds down. But as far as the Warrior’s half court offense goes, all he really has to do is learn to run the pick and roll effectively, because the rest of what the Warriors do in half court is pretty much spreading the floor and taking advantage of mismatches via isolation.

mixed feelings
While i do agree that Monta is far from being a true pg, i also agree with Nellie that Monta needs to be given the opportunity to become one. Given his size and build, it’s the right position for him to play. At the same time, his skillset and instincts are not that of a pg.
Yes, it’s an experiment. But it’s one that needs to be done.
I pray i never have to use a gun again...
...unless i'm at a strip club parking lot...
...and somebody tries to run me over with their car...
...But how often does that happen??

Hes going to learn
One thing that we can’t deny is that every year Monta has improved. He grew right in front of our eyes. It is going to be such a pleasure to see what he can bring at this pos.

About like the feeling you get when someone scratches their fingernails over a chalkboard? I guess he can go back to what he does best if it don’t work but I don’t see the point? We’re not required to carry handicapped players in certain positions are we?

Answers to your "questions."
About like the feeling you get when someone scratches their fingernails over a chalkboard?
No, not like that. More like the feeling of trepidation/excitement/anticipation you get prior to a date with a an attractive woman with whom you may or may not get lucky. Nothing ventured, nothing gained.
I guess he can go back to what he does best if it don’t work but I don’t see the point?
Sure, he could “go back” to full-time SG, or if we’re lucky he might become a legit young starting PG to be mentioned in the same sentence with CP3 and Deron, or (most likely) he could become a hybrid 1/2 like AI. The point is that given that we’re not winning a championship this year or next, it’s totally worth seeing what he can do. The rewards of his becoming a legit NBA starting PG are huge, and the risks are minimal (basically, we lose a few more games this season than we would have hoped). Nellie has repeatedly said his future in the NBA is as a PG. Is this really so hard to fathom?

Based on my knowledge of the CBA, no — though you might want ask JAE to be sure…

He will remind us of
Iverson. Small guy, lightning quick, prefers to score, is great at it, and he can pass if he has to. Only difference is that Monta can rebound better, play better defense, and he can dunk. Plus his new backcourt mate Jax will help facilitate the offense. He’ll also be able to run around screens and pull up for jumpers more often cause he will always have the ball.
I’ve been on the GET JOSH SMITH bandwagon, and I still am. However, thinkin about how Monta and Maggette like to crash the glass on offense and how Biedrins stays inside. Al and Jax would spread the floor looking for 3’s and outside shots. Josh Smith would just bring another person to play inside. But I feel that his inside presence would encourage Monta to improve outside shooting. Josh Smith would just be a huge improvement over Al on defense and rebounding. Plus getting Smith would probably take Wright or Randolph. I’d probably still be down to get him though. Either way next year’s team is gonna be really good

Iverson has some of the best handles I have ever seen. Monta is not even close in that regard.
About Josh Smith, I just have the feeling that some team is going to give him 75 million dollars and he is going to stop trying. He coasts already and he is on his rookie contract, what happens when you remove all incentive?
by Nellieball on Jul 13, 2008 2:34 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Ok....
I know everyone is saying AI, but Monta has always reminded me of Tony Parker. I could see him being a PG in his mold if his decision-making and court vision improves.
