2010: The NBA's Gold Rush. A Look At Where We Will Stand.

2010 will be the best Free Agency the NBA has seen in the Modern Era. I will update this once the dust settles, if a mid season trade occurs, and once again next off-season. The Free Agents are:

By Position:

Point Guards
1. Chris Paul    PG    24    $6,033,355  Re-Signed
2. Larry Ayuso    PG    30    $465,850
3. Luke Ridnour    PG    27    $6,500,000
4. T.J. Ford    PG    25    $8,500,000
5. Rajon Rondo    PG    22    $500,000
6. Mike Conley Jr.    PG    21    $3,883,800
7. Brion Rush    PG    23    $465,850
8. Andre Miller    PG    32    $9,250,258
9. Derek Fisher    PG    33    $5,046,000
10. Marcus Williams    PG    23    $2,076,845
11. Jarrett Jack    PG    25    $2,899,798
12. Daniel Gibson    PG    22    $2,160,715

- This looks to be the weakest group of potential free agents. Paul at the top is an elite level player but there's a decent drop-off after that considering that Ayuso is already an older guy. Ridnour will probably give you the best scorer of the remaining group while Ford is the top ball-handler and Conley Jr. is the youngster to watch.

Shooting Guards:

1. Dwyane Wade    SG    26    $15,779,912
2. Joe Johnson    SG    27    $14,976,754
3. Ray Allen    SG    33    $18,776,860
4. Richard Hamilton    SG    30    $11,375,000
5. Francisco Garcia    SG    26    $2,885,924
6. Manu Ginobili    SG    31    $10,725,000
7. Mike Miller    SG    28    $9,750,000
8. Larry Hughes    SG    29    $13,655,268
9. Antonio Daniels    SG    33    $6,600,000
10. Marquis Daniels    SG    27    $7,350,000
11. Bonzi Wells    SG    31    $1,100,000
12. Cuttino Mobley    SG    33    $9,800,000

- This is an exciting group and it's only going to get better from here. Wade is one of the top players in basketball, whole Joe Johnson, Ray Allen and Richard Hamilton are consistently capable of making an all-star team. Manu and Daniels provide the best all-around abilities of the remaining group with Garcia is the young player witch the best shot of moving up a level.

Small Forwards:

1. LeBron James    SF    23    $15,779,912
2. Carmelo Anthony    SF    24    $14,520,000
3. Tracy McGrady    SF    29    $23,239,561
4. Kevin Durant    SF    20    $4,796,880
5. Josh Howard    SF    27    $10,890,000
6. Mike Dunleavy    SF    28    $9,780,992
7. Marvin Williams    SF    22    $7,355,165
8. Jeff Green    SF    22    $3,516,960
9. Martell Webster    SF    22    $5,030,692
10. Danny Granger    SF    25    $3,289,684
11. Al Harrington    SF    28    $10,026,875
12. Darius Miles    SF    28    $9,000,000

- Now here's a "wow" kind of group. LeBron James, Carmelo Anthony and Tracy McGrady are amongst the top players in the game today whole Josh Howard is knocking on the door. Kevin Durant is already a strong player who will grow into an elite level talent very soon. Dunleavy and Granger are the best all-around talents of the remaining group while Jeff Green is the young player to watch.

Power Forwards:

1. Dirk Nowitzki    PF    30    $19,795,714
2. Jermaine O'Neal    PF    29    $22,995,000
3. Andrea Bargani    PF    23    $6,294,306
4. Al Horford    PF    22    $3,189,982
5. Troy Murphy    PF    28    $11,047,619
6. Charlie Villanueva    PF    24    $4,623,835
7. David Lee    PF    25    $2,682,049
8. Channing Frye    PF    25    $4,264,760
9. Yi Jianlian    PF    22    $3,002,386
10. Andray Blatche     PF    22    $4,093,269
11. Shelden Williams    PF    25    $4,148,715
12. Amir Johnson    PF    21    $3,666,666

- Dirk Nowitski are game-changing talents at their position and instantly make a team into a contender. What makes this a fun group is the presence of Andrea Bargani and Al Horford who both have the chance to grow into elite talents. Troy Murphy is an underrated player who helps you all over the stat sheet, while David Lee and Channing Frye are quiet worker types. Yi Jianlian, Andray Blatche and Amir Johnson have the potentially to really improve over the next couple of years. This is an exceptional group.

Centers:

1. Amare Stoudemire    C    24    $16,378,325
2. Chris Bosh    C    23    $15,779,912
3. Tyson Chandler    C    26    $11,850,000
4. Marcus Camby    C    34    $7,650,000
5. Greg Oden    C    20    $5,361,240
6. Ben Wallace    C    34    $14,000,000
7. Shaquille O'Neal    C    36    $20,000,000
8. Zydrunas Ilgauskas    C    32    $11,541,074
9. Mario Kasun    C    27    $465,850
10. Andrew Bogut    C    24    $8,182,598 Re-Signed
11. Brad Miller    C    31    $12,250,000
12. Andrew Bynum    C    21    $3,771,786

- You would expect that the center class provide the weakest group of potential free agents, but this class does a complete 180 as it may be the strongest group overall. Amare Stoudemire is one of the top players in the NBA while Chris Bosh and Tyson Chandler are in that next tier down. Marcus Camby and Ben Wallace have the chance to win defensive player of the year in any given season while Greg Oden is perhaps the NBA's brightest young star. Zydrunas Ilgauskas, Andrew Bogut and Brad Miller are all very good starting centers. Mario Kusan is a productive newcomer and Andrew Bynum is the youngster to watch lower down.

Top 25 Overall:

1. LeBron James    SF    23    $15,779,912
2. Dirk Nowitzki    PF    30    $19,795,714
3. Amare Stoudemire    C    24    $16,378,325
4. Dwyane Wade    SG    26    $15,779,912
5. Carmelo Anthony    SF    24    $14,520,000

Predicted Salary Cap:

$65 Million

Predicted Luxury Cap:

$75 Million

*Note: Management is the wildcard. They determine where the $$$ is allotted and if they want to dive into the Luxury Cap.

Predicted Warrior Payroll:

Monta Ellis:                11 Mil
Corey Maggette:        10 Mil
Andris Biedrins:        9 Mil
Ronny Turiaf:             4 Mil

Marco Belinelli:           5 Mil
Brandan Wright:         8 Mil
Anthony Randolph:    8 Mil

---------------------------------

55 Million

10 Mil Under The Predicted Salary Cap
20 Mil Under The Predicted Luxury Cap

This is a rough estimate at how our cap may look like come 010. With an entrance into luxury tax, I would say we WILL be able to sign a big free agent. hopefully a Center or PG (If Monta doesn't pan out at PG or if we draft a PG). Chris Bosh or Andrew Bynum may be perfect candidates at C. Perfect candiadtes at PG are Conley or Fisher (Personal Pick, will be past his time imo.). A best case scenario lineup of:

PG: Conley Jr.
SG: Ellis
SF: Maggette
PF: Biedrins
C: Bosh or Bynum

Reserves:
Turiaf
Randolph
Belinelli
Wright
Randolph
Filler (PG)
Filler (G)

Looks pretty damn sexy.

great summary

Thanks!

One thing to keep in mind is that the teams of these players will have more cap room as they come off the books so the competition for signing all these FAs will be considerably more than it is this year. Our best hope for being able to use 20 million to attract a Bosh type player it to create an exciting team for him to want to join. Go to it youngsters.

Once in a while you get shown the light in the strangest of places if you look at it right.

by fotd on Jul 14, 2008 2:41 PM PDT   0 recs

your right

Definately true, Great list btw

things to consider
1. most players will not be FA, instead they have the ETO that year.
2. mostly likely FA are instead RFA
3. more players on the market = more teams on the market as well.
4. still teams are going to do what it takes to retain thier superstar. we just have to assume thier not gonna be free on the market.
5. our cap situation does look alright, but not enough to get that young player we want.

This is a huge list!

I hope we do have some money, but it seems Mully has been hinting that we won’t be players in ‘10. Who knows if he’ll be around in ‘10 anyway.

Jermaine O’Neal got himself a deal. $23 mill?!

Are those Top 25 supposed to be ranked?

If so, how can a 32 year-old Dirk Nowitzki be ranked higher than a 25 year-old CP3 or a 22 year-old Durant? And why is 36 year-old Ben Wallace even on the list?

Sign ^^^^ !!

by Sleepy Freud on Jul 14, 2008 3:22 PM PDT   0 recs

+1

and Ray Allen is already showing signs of slowing down. After two more seasons I dont see him being among the elite FA’s. Nice list, but I have some serious issues with your rankings. (Tyson Chandler #9 overall?) Oh and Bogut re-signed with the Bucks and Darius Miles? ....isnt he already a free agent?

by sam23 on Jul 14, 2008 4:30 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

I don’t believe Durant wiii be a free agent then. He’ll be finishing his 3rd season at the end of 09-10. Unless something truly bizarre happens and the sub-Sonics or whatever the hell that midWest team will call themselves doesn’t pick up the option, he’ll be under contract.

ESPN's List

Nice work…Some comments:
-The list is a little misleading only because some of the players you listed (Durant/Oden/Horford) have team options that will likely be exercised
-Where did you come up with $8 for Wright/Randolph and $5 for Belinelli?
-Here’s a link to ESPN’s team-by-team breakdown of Restricted/Unrestricted/Player Option/Team Option free Agents for the next two years:

You may run like Hayes. but you hit like sh**!

Speculation/Estimation

by ejdacanay on Jul 14, 2008 3:46 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Some # corrections

Nice diary, but I have a few small corrections (I’m a salary cap guy).

Maggette is probably getting $8.6 this year to make the contract work, so with 8% raises, he’d be at $10,031,040.

Monta’s probably going to start at around $9.5m (5 years, $58m) with 10% raises. In the third year of that contract (2010-2011), he’d be making $11,495,000. It could be higher, of course.

Beans will probably be around 5 years, $54.9m, which would place his 2010-2011 salary at $10,890,000.

As such, those three combine to make $32,416,040.

Then we have the draft picks (slotted, and when not available, I used the value of the rookie contract from the same draft slot the year before):
Brandan Wright: $3,398,071
Marco Belinelli: $2,380,270
Anthony Randolph: $1,900,200
Richard Hendrix: Restricted Free Agent (typically sign a 2 year deal)
2009 1st rounder (I used the #12 pick): $1,968,120
2009 2nd rounder: $650,000 (ballpark)
2010 1st rounder (I used the #14 pick): $1,660,367
2010 2nd rounder: $600,000 (ballpark)

That’s $12,557,028 for draft picks.
Total, we’re at $44,973,068.

That doesn’t include a re-signed Hendrix or ANY players signed for that year (including Turiaf, who’d be around $3.8 if it’s frontloaded).

So basically, the Dubs would be at $45 mill with Monta, Beans, Maggette, the Slims, Marco, and the future draft picks.

Beyond that, it’s too much speculation, but keep in mind that there are still at least 5 roster spots to fill with those guys under contract.

by dprodigy19 on Jul 14, 2008 3:32 PM PDT   0 recs

Wright, Belinelli (Both 09), and Randolph (010) will all need extensions if they pan out well. All 3 look like they will develop well so i estimated those contracts.

by ejdacanay on Jul 14, 2008 3:45 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Those are accurate estimations of their worth...

But those “extensions” won’t kick in until their rookie contracts run out.

dprodigy’s cap figures are correct

You may run like Hayes. but you hit like sh**!

by Orbit1099 on Jul 14, 2008 3:53 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

How can the numbers on an extension for somebody who hasn't played a single NBA game be "accurate"

Seriously people… don’t get worked up about any of this.

Assuming that Wright morphs into a KG/Bosh hybrid destroyer, Randolph turns into a better version of Tayshaun Prince, Beans puts on 30 lbs and develops a jumpshot, and Monta becomes Gilbert Arenas squared, we’ll be all set at every position.

This is two years away. Remember 3 weeks ago when we were planning on how to build around BD? Things change. Quickly. Probably half of this FA list will be extended, and probably a quarter will have been TRADED (expiring contracts for guys who aren’t likely to resign get traded for whatever a team can get, see: KG), and then extended by the new team.

I put my stuff into a diary

My 2009 and 2010 estimates are in my new thread.

Take a look, and comment/rec as you like.

by dprodigy19 on Jul 14, 2008 4:26 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

if we're a predicted 10 million under the cap...

how are we gonna get someone like conley AND bosh or bynum? 10 million MIGHT be able to get conley, and that’s IF he doesn’t sign an extension which most guys do when their rookie contracts are up.

by kinetic on Jul 14, 2008 3:40 PM PDT   0 recs

Read the Luxury Tax.

by ejdacanay on Jul 14, 2008 3:44 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

yeah,

but to sign a free agent you need cap space. You can only go over the cap if you’re signing your own guys. I’m pretty sure that’s the way it works.

by kinetic on Jul 14, 2008 3:48 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

You're right Kinetic

Plus, the Warriors would have Wright and Marco extensions the following year with no one coming off the books and adding picks, so they’d need to save some $

by dprodigy19 on Jul 14, 2008 4:00 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Biedrins at PF?

what? Plus a backcourt of Conley and Monta would be HORRIBLE defensively.

by kinetic on Jul 14, 2008 3:45 PM PDT   0 recs

Yup. He was a projected PF coming out of Latvia.

by ejdacanay on Jul 14, 2008 4:59 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Andris as a PF maybe
Bosh as a C no way.
Things would be much better reversed in that hypothetical lineup.

My Top 10 2010 UFA's and RFA's

Top 10 Unrestricted:
1. LeBron James (P)
2. Amare Stoudemire (P)
3. Dwyane Wade (P)
4. Joe Johnson
5. Chris Bosh (P)
6. Yao (ETO)
7. Tracy McGrady
8. Michael Redd (ETO)
9. Dirk Nowitzki (ETO)
10. Steve Nash

Top 10 Restricted
1. Brandon Roy
2. Rudy Gay
3. LaMarcus Aldridge
4. Rajon Rondo
5. Tyrus Thomas
6. Luis Scola
7. Andrea Bargnani
8. Randy Foye
9. Jordan Farmar
10. Ronnie Brewer

dprodigy’s cap synopsis is much more accurate. Given those figures, I’d say it’s pretty un-realistic GS targets any marquee players. At most, it’ll be a “Maggette-like” player.

You may run like Hayes. but you hit like sh**!

by Orbit1099 on Jul 14, 2008 3:48 PM PDT   0 recs

exactly...

the warriors money is going towards their own young guys right now. Short of something absolutely insane comparable to Baron opting out of 18 million, there’s no way the warriors are going to sign one of the marquee free agents. The teams that are looking to sign big names in 2010 are already working towards clearing cap space for that free agency period.

by kinetic on Jul 14, 2008 3:50 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

I'd say someone around $7-8m at the absolute most

It’s what makes people like me who hate the Maggette signing so mad- the Dubs could max someone out that offseason (which will probably be necessary to get a top-notch FA since everyone is flush with cash) without that $10.3m on the books.

by dprodigy19 on Jul 14, 2008 4:01 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Who would you target with that cap space?

dp,
I see your frustrations with the Mag’s contract, just curious as to who you’d like the W’s to target with said cap space had we NOT signed Maggette?

Let’s assume we resign Monta/AB and the Lakers don’t match Turiaf and our 2009 2nd Round pick doesn’t pan out (fairly realistic):

PG: Monta
SG: Marco
SF: Randolph
PF: Wright/Hendrix
C: Biedrins/Turiaf

Plus: 09 First Rounder, 10 First Rounder, 10 Second Rounder

This roster is probably weakest at SG and possibly SF/PF depending on Wright and AR’s development. We still lack a backup point, as well. Of the available FA’s, I’d rank them as follows:

1. Lebron – Not happening
2. Roy – Plays SG, is young, can run the point, perfect fit, but Portland probably matches any offer.
3. Joe Johnson – Interesting player, really helped his stock with his playoff performance. Might not cost the max, but he’d be close to 30 by 2010. Would you rather pay a 30 year old JJ 5/65 (I’m estimating) in 2 years or a 29 year old Maggette 5/50 now?
4. Amare Stoudemire – He’d be a monster, but Shaq and Nash come off the books that summer, no way Phx lets him go
5. Wade – Miami can offer more money and years, can’t see him leaving
6. Bosh – With Wright, he’s a little redundant, but most likely an upgrade. Still young, only 26 in 2010 if I’m not mistaken. But would he bolt Toronto for less $$/years?

Maybe Mullin’s thinking was that a “Maggette in hand is worth more than a Roy/Johnson/etc. in the bush”. Your thoughts?

You may run like Hayes. but you hit like sh**!

Maybe Dirk?

He’ll be gettin up there in years by that time and I’m sure Cuban would love to take his money and make a run at one of the younger free agents. If Nellie is still hangin around here in some capacity I could see Dirk in the bay. Someone else brought up the possibility of Yao in another post. Outside of those two I dont see us being able to attract any marquee guys.

you should add whether or not the players have team or player option and if their restricted or unrestricted

Beautiful Post

Personally I think that all this talk about LeBron really wanting to play in New York is mostly perpetuated by the New York media wanting him there. I mean there’s a good chance he’ll go there if they keep talking about it because it will become a self-fulfilling prophecy but I am positive we could offer him a more attractive team than Brooklyn, and though the media says he’s going to the Knicks (like they do every good player) they got to get rid of a lot of salary first.

It sucks though, we had the dream scenario all wrapped up but Mullin caved in to fan pressure too easily. If we don’t spend that 10 mil on Maggette then next year we would suck our way to a top pick and future point guard and two years from now we would probably still have a decent pick (which we’d use to try and pinpoint an instant contributor), plus a TON of cap room that would give us a very good chance at one of the top players. Then we would have had our SG and C locked up, a top pick PG, a good chance that one of Randolph or Wright would pan out, leaving us with the money to spend on the remaining position. And if they both panned out, then maybe go for an elite center (sorry Biedrins, you’ll make a hell of a backup though).

It’s still possible, it’s just that now Maggette has to do something off the court really stupid like dogfighting, so we can terminate his contract. You had it in your grasp though Mullin.

Larry Ayuso

...while I like Larry Ayuso’s game, I’d like to know why he’s not only ON this list, but ranked #2 behind Chris Paul and ahead of guys like Andre Miller and Derek Fisher, who have played in the league for years. Ayuso still hasn’t made an opening day roster.

and why is bynum

below kasun and bogut?

Lots of those names will be crossed off the list by then—it’ll be a more interesting free-agent market than usual, but it’s not going to be the nirvana that that list implies. I won’t lose much sleep if we’re not really in the sweepstakes for the top guys in two years.

wow

didnt realize that FA class had THAT much talent

but ur praise for dunleavy as one of the “best all around talents” and troy murphy as an “underrated” stat-sheet filler are questionable…

Thank you, Dubs.

good work

Excellent work in compiling these lists.

I think this summer we have seen that the warriors are willing to spend money to get good players, but are not going to over-spend. As far as 2010, it all depends on how are young guys develop, but we will be fine.

I doubt...

I would have enough cash to lure anyone away in that FA class.

pointless

Cap space is overrated. I wish I had a link to this one write-up that accurately explained why. All-stars free agents typically don’t move around via free agency, unless:

a) They want to move back closer to their hometowns (example: Baron Davis and Elton Brand this year)

b) They are offered more money than their original teams can match (example: Gilbert Arenas)

However, (b) is impossible nowadays due to the Gilbert Arenas rule named after that freak occurrence. The original team now always has the opportunity to match other teams’ offers, regardless of their cap situation. In many cases when the player has been with a team for awhile, the original team can actually offer a bigger contract than any other team. This was the case this offseason when the Warriors offered Arenas a max contract of $100mil, yet the Wizards had the ability to offer him $125mil.

Financially, it doesn’t make sense for any super star free agent to sign with anybody else other than their own team. They can make more money with their original team than signing with anyone else. And if they really hate playing on that team, they can use their influence to force a blockbuster trade as we’ve seen time and time again where superstars get traded for expiring contracts and change.

So unless any of those guys happen to be from the Bay Area, it makes little sense that any star on that list uses free agency to sign with us for less money. Nor do we have a big market like LA or NY to attract the star power of a Lebron James or Kobe Bryant.

Bottom line: disregard all the hooplah about free agency two years from now. Build for now and let the chips fall where they may later.

You're not going to get a star

But you can definitely get a solid #2/#3 guy, which can be incredibly valuable.

You’re 100% right that guys like KG, Duncan, etc don’t move around alot. However, getting a guy like Antawn Jamison, Andre Iguodala, or Emeka Okafor (that caliber, not them specifically) can go a long way towards making a team competitive.

#2 or #3 guys

are not good free agent targets. What happens is teams bid up their value and someone ends up overpaying. Examples of this are Corey Maggette this offseason and Rashard Lewis last offseason. We had to overpay for Maggette or else he would’ve just gone to the Clippers or the Celtics for the MLE.

I’m not doubting Jamison, Iguodala, and Okafor are all quality. It’s just not the greatest idea to save cap room to try to overpay for them.

by YaHeard on Jul 15, 2008 3:03 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Who was driving up the price on Maggette?

Sure as hell wasn’t the Clippers.

The other way to get a cheaper (but not cheap, of course) #2/#3 guy with cap space is via trade. Guys like Camby get moved all the time now with the new financial realities of ownership and the luxury tax.

Are you

in any way, shape or form, related to Larry Ayuso? #2? Really?

by phiLthyphiL on Jul 15, 2008 1:36 AM PDT   0 recs

What about making a trade with the BUcks or CAVS???

If we could make the salaries work, what about something like:

Ramon Sessions, Charlie Villanueva, Dan Gadzuric

For Al Harrington and a Future (Lottery Protected) First Round Pick

Or

Al Harrington + Pick to Cleveland for Ben Wallace and Delonte West

Eitehr one would give us a good backup point and would give us a pretty good big man. Villanueva is a bit lazy, but hes a real live big and he can score. Ben Wallace can rebound, defend, and bang with the big boys.

Thoughts?

I

think Milwaukee is really high on Sessions. I think he’ll eventually take over the PG spot. They’re probably gonna put Mo Williams on the block given his injury history.

They could land one

I think the dubs could land one of the top three centers or PFs on your lists, but get used to the fact that Ellis will be a fine PG and probably contending for all star competition by then. His first three years out of High School compare with Kobe’s first three statistically (check for yourself if you don’t believe me). The Warriors don’t run a system where the 1-5 positions are so traditional. In fact, they run it better if three guys are getting 5 or 6 assists each than just one guy getting 9-10. Different looks with Jackson, Ellis, Belinelli (and look for Randolf) all playing some point action within any given game should be common place, but mutable depending on the match-ups. In real Nellie ball it’s not necessarily run and gun. That was because BD was so rebellious and the youthful team couldn’t commit on D. That should begin to change for the better and hopefully we’ll see a more controlled team after a couple of years. Real Nellie ball is all about the match-ups, and whoever’s running the team by then, Keith Smart or whoever, will be likely to focus on matchups rather than any thing else. To counter advantages the other team has always had aginst the team you must have the best bigman you can get.
