Was maggette worth it?
We overpayed him and now we look like we are in a bad finacial situation because we cant spend on top notch free agents in the next couple of years. Now we have 50 million committed to a person who has never been a great scorer on a good team. he scored 22 points a game for the 27-55 clippers. he also did that in 2003 when there record was around there. the season the clippers made the playoffs his scoring was down and he only played in 39 games. are we sure he was the right choice. in a year or 2 there will be elite to very good players getting 50 million or a starting salary of 10 million because of the ammount of good free agents. i realize we may not have gotten any of them but i bet at least one would come play for us because there is so many of them. what are your thoughts.

LOL HAHAHA
I love the comment Tony lol hahahahaha!
Well… IMO… Maggette was not the player I was looking to sign either but the decision has been made and I stand by it. I do not really understand what you’re talking about when you say…
“Now we have 50 million committed to a person who has never been a great scorer on a good team.”
He is a great scorer and it doesn’t matter what team you play for you’re still in the NBA and in his defense he had a high scoring average in a very tough Western Conference. He is a very good player and although I agree with you to a certain degree that maybe he isn’t the player we really wanted, he still is a very good player that we have picked up and a very nice addition to fill in the role of SF which we currently are lacking with the departure and possible departure of some of last seasons players.
Just like Jae said, It’s about the efficiency of a player. Two players may score 25 ppg, but one takes half as many shots to get to that point total, which player are you going to take? The one who takes less shots but still scores the same amount. Efficiency is what we get in Maggette.

An important thing to consider is that the cap space does not automatically roll over to the next season. Without Maggette, given a reasonable estimate of the cap next year and a reasonable estimate of what Monta and Andris will make, the cap space we’d have in a year would not be as big as it is this year, even if we filled the 0809 roster with vet min players on one year deals.
His scoring rate and efficiency haven’t changed too much when the Clippers were good or bad. What you see probably is what you get, and that’s a pretty good player. The focus on scoring totals is myopic. It’s not a great tracker of what someone provides to a team. How efficiently the points were scored tends to factor far more into wins and losses.
Was he worth it? Time will tell. If not him then who is a reasonable question to ask though.

how is someone gonna ask this a week after we got him!

HAHAHAHAHA! actually...
Maggette is averaging 14 points and 4 rebounds per game in my NBA 2k8 season… and we’re still 0-5!

Maggette
Well, Maggette’s actually coming off arguably his best career year in most aspects.
Besides, who else could have we signed this offseason? Iguodala, Josh Smith, Okafor, Luol Deng? Those young talents aren’t going anywhere, they’re going to resign with their teams for sure.
People will blame Mullin for making that move so soon in free agency, as if it were just a “panic move” from losing Baron. However, at this point, he was realistically the most available talent available. It’s better that we get what we can in free agency now than wait for all the cards to fall and us left with nothing.
by YaHeard on Jul 15, 2008 3:10 PM PDT 0 recs
one more point
Anybody better than Maggette in that hyped up 2010 free agency class is either going to re-sign for the most money with their original teams, go to a big market team (NY or LA), or go to a team closer to home.
We’re not getting Lebron James or Dwyane Wade or Deron Williams whether we have the cap room or not, sorry.

Exactly
for all we know he could actually thrive in our system due to the fact that we just get more touches in general because of our fast paced game play. Maggette could possibly boost his PPG this season because of Nelson’s style just like what happened to Stephen Jackson who had a career best in PPG most likely due to the number of touches he got.

yeah we overpaid
Maggette by maybe 2 million a year at the most…but keep in mind that a bunch of other teams were trying to get his services. we offer 5 million more in the contract to prevent him from signing elsewhere. thats how it works. this is a good signing. jackson can now play the two and we have a solid, proven player at the 3 rather than air france or young buke
by 3Kings650 on Jul 15, 2008 3:34 PM PDT 0 recs
2mill a year really?
Maybe like 10 years ago he’d be worth that. With the NBA market the way it is, unproven 1st rounders get more than 2mil.

NO
he is not worth all that money. we could have signed MP2 instead because he’s a better defender and worth a lot less. we could have made a run at okafor with the rest of the money to compete with the rest of the bigs in the west

and when the Bobcats
finally match the offer after lagging an entire week on it deliberately, the Dubz will be left with absolutely nobody to alleviate the loss of Baron, as most other free-agents will have already been signed.
We would then throw a lineup of:
Monta
Jax
MP2
Harrington
Beans
Not even sure that lineup would get the Dubz into the playoffs in the East.

Let me play Devil's Advocate here
I definitely think we overpaid him, but I think we’re missing two key points here:
1.) From early rumblings, it sounded like we were contending with Detroit, Boston, and San Antonio for his services. They were said to have been offering MLE. In order to attract him away form immediate title contenders, we had to pay a premium to land him. I’m guessing that’s true for every FA. I’m thinking almost every quality player in the league would take an offer from a contending team and turn down that same offer from a middle-pack team. While we’re in the middle, we’ll always have to overpay to attract quality players.
2.) I don’t understand this great scorer for poor team argument. We heard it many times before with JRich when we were aiming at 40 wins. To me, being a quality scorer on a poor team isn’t a bad thing. Yes his numbers probably have been inflated, but that means he knows how to score with the opposing teams bust perimeter defenders focused on him. Correct me if I’m wrong here…
Anyways, while I agree that we did overpay him, could we have gotten him or anybody else without overpaying?
I agree with DSO, let the man earn his money before we blast him. At least he’s not Barry Zito…
Rejoiced with each win
But whenever we lost
I walked to the bars
And got myself tossed

A guy that could become Zito..
is Marion if we trade for him and offer him a long-term max deal. I feel that he’s had his best years and that once his athleticism falls down a notch he’ll be done.

we didn't just overpay...
Other teams were only offering the MLE, which is set around $5.6 M per.
The W’s are paying him $10 M per.
That is $4.4 M MORE THAN ANY OTHER TEAM
THAT IS 78 % ABOVE ANY OTHER TEAMS OFFER.
That is not overpaying, that is Zito-esque, financially least.
I would rather overpay Josh Smith by $3-4 M than overpay for Maggette, who has averaged nearly the same amount of games per season as Baron “god forbid we give him a long term deal” Davis and IS JUST AS OLD AS BD WAS.

You get credit for crunching numbers.
You forgot to factor in the 8.5% yearly increase that he likely got. That would make his deal worth 8.6 mil this year. That is only a 2.8 mil increase the first year and a 48% increase. This is much different from your initial calculations and it’ll make a difference in the long run when and short term cause we can still sign other players. For instance after we sign Turiaf we’ll have more money available than any other team that needs a back-up PG.

Completely agree but...
Don’t you think most veterans would turn down an extra 1 or 2 mil a year if they could walk onto an immediate contender? The point I was making was, we pretty much had to offer him 4 or 5 mil more than the San Antones and Bostons of the world in order to lock him up. I agree that I’d rather take that money and then some and throw it at Josh Smith, but I’m thinking the Hawks are gonna match no matter what…

There’s an X-factor that you’re forgetting—that the Brand-less Clippers were about to have a pile of money to throw at Maggette to keep him. By all accounts, the threat of the Clippers entering the bidding was what got the deal done at that price.
Would the Clips have tried to keep Maggette? I dunno—there are persistent rumors that he and Dunleavy don’t get along. But it’s not an unreasonable assumption, as they were left a scorer short, and because Maggette was the premier unrestricted guy remaining. More to the point, our front office clearly thought the Clips were going to make a play for him. We were bidding against the Clippers, not the Spurs and Pistons.

josh smith
If and when the Hawks resign JSmooth, he’ll probably earn an average of $10-12mil a year. Had the Dubs attempted to outbid the Hawks for Josh Smith (while considering he is restricted), we probably had to land him for $15-17mil a year. I don’t think that’s worth it for a guy who’s not quite a ‘centerpiece’ player.

yes he is worth it
his efficiency makes him worth it. he wont need to take as many shots as jax or bd would to get his 20pts and thats what this team needs better shooters

No
But we needed a star now, so I guess he aint bad. I just wished we’d offer a contract to Josh Smith!

I wanted him to get a contract from us too. I just don’t get how we didn’t target him. He’s a big man that fits our system perfectly, and he’s even capable of hitting 3s. wtf?

Maybe we overpaid for Maggette
But what sports player isn’t overpaid? Even the league minimum is probably more than the innovators of the game earned. Anyway, Maggette’s on our team now, so I support it. My profile picture should say it all.

Cap Space for next year is
NO PROBLEM Harrington will be gone that is 10M and Foyle will almost be off the books that is another 6 plus Million. therefore we will be at least $16 Million under the cap next year!!!! We are ready for action baby!
by smearthebeard on Jul 15, 2008 10:23 PM PDT 0 recs
Harrington?
There’s a repeated error on this board that Harrington will be gone next year. This is only true if he’s traded. His contract runs for 2 more seasons.
