Who would you rather lose Biedrins or Monta?

Right now, I hate to say it seems inevitable that we will have to trade one of them in the next year or two in order to take a step forward.  We just dont have any other real trade bait on the team.

I think the most obvious answer is keep Monta because people tend to want the offensive production, but his defense has not been great so far and Biedrins in trending in the right direction both offensively and defensively.

You also have to consider Monta may want out of Golden State soon.  He seems to be more eager than Biedrins to play in a larger market or move closer to home in the South (Miami Heat?).

So is there one you would keep no matter what?

This FanPost is a submission from a member of the mighty Golden State of Mind community. While we're all here to throw up that W, these words do not necessarily reflect the views of the GSoM Crew. Still, chances are the preceding post is Unstoppable Baby!

Good question

Dang, this is a tough question because I dont want to lose either of them. They each have those strengths that you cannot afford to let go of.

Biedrins, as a young center, is too valuable to lose. Talented young big men are hard to find, and we found one in Andris. He may never be a dominating player, but he does his job well, and he is only, what, 22? He will just get better over time, hopefully.

Monta, on the other hand, is a guard. Guards are one of the easiest positions to replace. However, Monta is a stud. There is a reason he is on everybody’s lists of best young players. He is a game-breaker that, like Andris, will continue to improve. I see a couple All Stars in his future, and, maybe, an MVP Award or two.

I dont want to lose either, but Monta has that “IT” factor about him that we need to build around. Monta all the way.

CP3

will get an MVP award or 2 before Monta will ever even get 1 vote.

Both.

Just to see how everyone would react. After Baron bounced- it was chaos in Dubzville.

I highly doubt LeBron would want to come here.

Too Short has been an Atlanta resident since the mid-'90s

E-40 would be a more logical choice. Of course, a man of his body type selling off Fatburger stores in favor of investing in sports would be kinda funny to see happen. :P

Monta

It’s intensely hard to get a big man as young and as good as Beans. Plus, I’d miss the hair too much

Monta

i’d like to see Monta be the guy, but i do hear what you’re all saying about Biedrins.

It’s got to be Monta though.

I'd keep Biedrins

In a more conventional, non-Nellie universe, Biedrins is by far the more valuable talent.

Biedrins has the agility and quickness to play power forward on any other squad in the league. He’s only a post and strength liability on our team because he’s forced to play center. I believe he’d be more effective as a PF and his weaknesses are magnified by playing center for us.

On the other hand, Monta Ellis will have trouble in this league unless he fully does transition to being a serviceable PG. Monta Ellis at SG will just plain not work on a functional, championship-calibur squad. Unlike Biedrins, I think Ellis would suffer on another team because nobody would be willing to play him at SG. He truly is a product of our system. (This is all assuming he won’t be able to transition to PG, which he might.)

Dris can’t shoot good enough to play forward.
Montay has the speed and can shoot good enough to play 2 guard on a very good team.. Just because he’s short don’t mean he’s got point guard skills though, leave him be and let the boy score.

Who

says that we have to make a trade. We have a good young team and we don’t have to make a trade at all. Can someone please explain to me why we would make a trade?

by boomdizzleness on Jul 16, 2008 12:45 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Simple

Pieces that fit together more effectively given the Warriors (Monta’s and Nellie’s preferred) style of play. More depth in a run and gun is still paramount. Load this team up with skilled swingmen…maybe a defensive stalwart (Marion/Artest).

Creative concept:

If Al and BWright + a future draft pick could get us Marion.

...add a RFA who is also quick, young and has good hands(like AB) but can defend the C position (Okafor)

AB = a center’s skillset in a PF’s body, without any of the Nellie PF talents (some range on a jumpshot, reasonable ball handling prowess)

Probably Beans

Currently as of this minute we can’t afford to lose Monta because he’s the only player on our roster that has played substantial minutes at PG. Normally I’d say Monta because young and talented big men don’t come as often as young and talented guards. I’m putting in “luck” as a factor if I were to let go of Monta because Atlanta landed Joe Johnson in a trade and we got Monta (and Gilbert) in the 2nd round. Monta does have the “IT” factor about him though but in a traditional system dominated by the front line the guards aren’t as important.

I’d say Bean’s even though he is hard to let go of because he’s our most reliable big man and he’s young which means he still has a lot of room to improve. Croshere and Turiaf would be “okay” choices at center considering the wing dominated system Nellie likes to play. If we do get Turiaf, resign Croshere, and keep Al we’d have a serviceable line up at center.

I’d say to give up Monta if we were in a traditional system and had a PG already but we have Nellie as our coach.

Neither

I thought the primary reason we traded away Jrich was so we would have enough money to sign Beans and Monta without getting into the luxury tax? This idea that we can only keep one is stupid.

agree

I thought there were plans to sign both to long term deals?

and i’d be surprised if we didn’t. i’m sure the tc just wanted everyone to say beans since he’s probably yet another beans hater

it would depend on what we could get in return

cuz i would be open to trading both of them. to answer your question though warriorsvictim who i would rather lose i lose monta. monta could be relplaced alot easier than beans. i think monta will be a good scorer and an allstar but nothing more. i dont see him being the type of player that would be a difference maker for a team to become a championship team. he has almost all the physical tools to be but he is missing alot of the intangibles. so i trade him first.

Take Beans

You Can Replace Scoring With Ease and Especially If They Are A 6’3 Shooting Guard! You Get Those Every Year But Beans Is
1. Younger
2. More Reliable
3. Rebounds
4.Almost A 7 Footer That Can Keep Up With Any Type Of Play

Superstar potential

Who of the two has a top tier skill set and potential…Monta. AB (come on guys, let’s not ignore the limits to this guys skill set) has a much lower ceiling on what he can do.

From what I’m reading, it seems that folks are nervous about trading a C that has performed well statistically and not being able to find a viable C to replace him (traditional or even a-traditional, serviceable C’s are hard to find). But if we are indeed playing for the future, wouldn’t we want to hold onto the commodity with the biggest upside. I’m sorry fellas, but I’m having a hard time seeing what major improvements a young AB is going to make to his game. He’ll never be a real C on defense because of the lack of size and muscle (can’t match up to the beasts at PF or C). He regressed as a rim defender last year to an alarming degree. He will never develop offensive game outside of 7 feet and certainly never a turnaround jumper (something I think a guy of his lean physique needs to be an offensive threat). Sure, AB is quick around the rim, has pretty good footwork and great hands but he thrives in space. Several factors are or could be in play that would limit that space next year.

ME is a top tier explosive guy. He has a talent that is not as easily replaceable as others lead on. I can’t think of a faster player in the NBA. Seems to me that this is the identity of this team and ME is the perfect catalyst.

Sorry for the scattered posts. Just don’t have the time to sit and put together a diary style post today and I feel like I’ve been saying this stuff for a year and a half now.

In conclusion and to the chagrin of pragmatists on this site, I smell a real shake-up coming…something large to help solidify the identity of this team and its coach. I’m definitely hoping for it…

it depends how you look at it...

at a talent level, it’d want to keep Monta in a heartbeat. But at a loyality stand point, probably Andris since he is more of a quiet player who wont ask for much.

by Spee-D on Jul 16, 2008 4:39 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Monta Ellis, no question

I like Biedrins and have been impressed by his improvement, but I’m still convinced that his increased production is a product of Don Nelson’s system. Ellis, however, has been showing flashes of greatness since the beginning, even with Montgomery as coach.

by J-Triumf on Jul 16, 2008 9:06 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Monta no doubt

biedrins is an absolute beast, but monta has shown hes a lot better, if he improves his d and 3 pt shooting, a possible AI could be in our city. but we shoulda kept baron, as Jay-Z says, 30’s the new 20.

by Dub4lif3 on Jul 16, 2008 9:53 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

interesting....about 50/50 on this one

I dont know that I could say Biedrins unless he spent some time developing a jump shot, maybe a turn around-fade away like Hakeem. He definitely needs a little more finesse in his game if he is going to be the most valuable player on our team because he is never going to be a great defender.

we need one great guy, and right now Monta appears to be it.
